In network science, one of the significant and challenging subjects is the detection of communities. Modularity [1] is a measure of community structure that compares connectivity in the network with the expected connectivity in a graph sampled from a random null model. Its optimisation is a common approach to tackle the community detection problem. We present a new method for modularity maximisation, which is based on the observation that modularity can be expressed in terms of total variation on the graph and signless total variation on the null model. The resulting algorithm is of Merriman–Bence–Osher (MBO) type. Different from earlier methods of this type, the new method can easily accommodate different choices of the null model. Besides theoretical investigations of the method, we include in this paper numerical comparisons with other community detection methods, among which the MBO-type methods of Hu et al. [2] and Boyd et al. [3], and the Leiden algorithm [4].

Networked dynamical systems, i.e., systems of dynamical units coupled via nontrivial interaction topologies, constitute models of broad classes of complex systems, ranging from gene regulatory and metabolic circuits in our cells to pandemics spreading across continents. Most of such systems are driven by irregular and distributed fluctuating input signals from the environment. Yet how networked dynamical systems collectively respond to such fluctuations depends on the location and type of driving signal, the interaction topology and several other factors and remains largely unknown to date. As a key example, modern electric power grids are undergoing a rapid and systematic transformation towards more sustainable systems, signified by high penetrations of renewable energy sources. These in turn introduce significant fluctuations in power input and thereby pose immediate challenges to the stable operation of power grid systems. How power grid systems dynamically respond to fluctuating power feed-in as well as other temporal changes is critical for ensuring a reliable operation of power grids yet not well understood. In this work, we systematically introduce a linear response theory (LRT) for fluctuation-driven networked dynamical systems. The derivations presented not only provide approximate analytical descriptions of the dynamical responses of networks, but more importantly, also allow to extract key qualitative features about spatio-temporally distributed response patterns. Specifically, we provide a general formulation of a LRT for perturbed networked dynamical systems, explicate how dynamic network response patterns arise from the solution of the linearised response dynamics, and emphasise the role of LRT in predicting and comprehending power grid responses on different temporal and spatial scales and to various types of disturbances. Understanding such patterns from a general, mathematical perspective enables to estimate network responses quickly and intuitively, and to develop guiding principles for, e.g., power grid operation, control and design.

Each metric graph has canonically associated to it a polarized real torus called its tropical Jacobian. A fundamental real-valued invariant associated to each polarized real torus is its tropical moment. We give an explicit and efficiently computable formula for the tropical moment of a tropical Jacobian in terms of potential theory on the underlying metric graph. We show that there exists a universal linear relation between the tropical moment, a certain capacity called the tau invariant, and the total length of a metric graph. To put our formula in a broader context, we relate our work to the computation of heights attached to principally polarized abelian varieties.

We introduce and study analogues of expander and hyperfinite graph sequences in the context of directed acyclic graphs, which we call ‘extender’ and ‘hypershallow’ graph sequences, respectively. Our main result is a probabilistic construction of non-hypershallow graph sequences.

We provide a general program for finding nice arrangements of points in real or complex projective space from transitive actions of finite groups. In many cases, these arrangements are optimal in the sense of maximizing the minimum distance. We introduce our program in terms of general Schurian association schemes before focusing on the special case of Gelfand pairs. Notably, our program unifies a variety of existing packings with heretofore disparate constructions. In addition, we leverage our program to construct the first known infinite family of equiangular lines with Heisenberg symmetry.

The Friedgut–Kalai–Naor (FKN) theorem states that if ƒ is a Boolean function on the Boolean cube which is close to degree one, then ƒ is close to a dictator, a function depending on a single coordinate. The author has extended the theorem to the slice, the subset of the Boolean cube consisting of all vectors with fixed Hamming weight. We extend the theorem further, to the multislice, a multicoloured version of the slice.

As an application, we prove a stability version of the edge-isoperimetric inequality for settings of parameters in which the optimal set is a dictator.

The purpose of this work is to investigate the properties of spreading speeds for the monotone semiflows. According to the fundamental work of Liang and Zhao [(2007) Comm. Pure Appl. Math.60, 1–40], the spreading speeds of the monotone semiflows can be derived via the principal eigenvalue of linear operators relating to the semiflows. In this paper, we establish a general method to analyse the sign and the continuity of the spreading speeds. Then we consider a limiting case that admits no spreading phenomenon. The results can be applied to the model of cellular neural networks (CNNs). In this model, we find the rule which determines the propagating phenomenon by parameters.

Computer or communication networks are so designed that they do not easily get disrupted under external attack. Moreover, they are easily reconstructed when they do get disrupted. These desirable properties of networks can be measured by various parameters, such as connectivity, toughness and scattering number. Among these parameters, the isolated scattering number is a comparatively better parameter to measure the vulnerability of networks. In this paper we first prove that for split graphs, this number can be computed in polynomial time. Then we determine the isolated scattering number of the Cartesian product and the Kronecker product of special graphs and special permutation graphs.

The concept of a signature is a useful tool in the analysis of semicoherent systems with continuous, and independent and identically distributed component lifetimes, especially for the comparison of different system designs and the computation of the system reliability. For such systems, we provide conversion formulae between the signature and the reliability function through the corresponding vector of dominations and we derive efficient algorithms for the computation of any of these concepts from any other. We also show how the signature can be easily computed from the reliability function via basic manipulations such as differentiation, coefficient extraction, and integration.

Given a connected regular graph $G$, let $l(G)$ be its line graph, $s(G)$ its subdivision graph, $r(G)$ the graph obtained from $G$ by adding a new vertex corresponding to each edge of $G$ and joining each new vertex to the end vertices of the corresponding edge and $q(G)$ the graph obtained from $G$ by inserting a new vertex into every edge of $G$ and new edges joining the pairs of new vertices which lie on adjacent edges of $G$. A formula for the normalised Laplacian characteristic polynomial of $l(G)$ (respectively $s(G),r(G)$ and $q(G)$) in terms of the normalised Laplacian characteristic polynomial of $G$ and the number of vertices and edges of $G$ is developed and used to give a sharp lower bound for the degree-Kirchhoff index and a formula for the number of spanning trees of $l(G)$ (respectively $s(G),r(G)$ and $q(G)$).

We consider backward stochastic differential equations in a setting where noise is generated by a countable state, continuous time Markov chain, and the terminal value is prescribed at a stopping time. We show that, given sufficient integrability of the stopping time and a growth bound on the terminal value and BSDE driver, these equations admit unique solutions satisfying the same growth bound (up to multiplication by a constant). This holds without assuming that the driver is monotone in y, that is, our results do not require that the terminal value be discounted at some uniform rate. We show that the conditions are satisfied for hitting times of states of the chain, and hence present some novel applications of the theory of these BSDEs.

Stratified and simple random sampling (or testing) are two common methods used to investigate the number or proportion of items in a population with a particular attribute. Although it is known that cost factors and information about the strata in the population are often crucial in deciding whether to use stratified or simple random sampling in a given situation, the stochastic precedence ordering for random variables can also provide the basis for an interesting criteria under which these methods may be compared. It may be particularly relevant when we are trying to find as many special items as possible in a population (for example individuals with a disease in a country). Properties of this total stochastic order on the class of random variables are discussed, and necessary and sufficient conditions are established which allow the comparison of the number of items of interest found in stratified random sampling with the number found in simple random sampling in the stochastic precedence order. These conditions are compared with other results established on stratified and simple random sampling (testing) using different stochastic-order-type criteria, and applications are given for the comparison of sums of Bernoulli random variables and binomial distributions.

Testing in order to produce software of high reliability is an area of major concern in software engineering. In an effort to find efficient methods of testing, the comparison of partition and random sampling testing methods has received considerable attention in the literature. A standard criterion for comparisons between random and partition testing, based on their expected efficacy in program debugging, is the probability of detecting at least one failure causing input in the program's domain. However, the goal in software testing is usually to find as many faults as possible in a reasonable period of time, and therefore stochastic comparisons of the number of faults obtained in partition and random testing may provide more valuable information on which testing procedures to use. We establish various conditions which guarantee that the number of faults discovered in partition testing is stochastically greater than the number discovered in random testing (using a fixed total sample size) for many of the well-established stochastic orders (including the usual stochastic order, the hazard rate order, the likelihood ratio order, and the variability order). The results established also allow us to obtain both upper and lower bounds with these stochastic orders for the sum of n independent Bernoulli random trials (with varying probability of success) in terms of the binomial distribution with parameters n and p.

We prove Lévy's theorem concerning positiveness of transition probabilities of Markov processes when the state space is countable and an invariant probability distribution exists. Our approach relies on the representation of transition probabilities in terms of the directed circuits that occur along the sample paths.
