We study a subtle inequity in the distribution of unnormalized differences between imaginary parts of zeros of the Riemann zeta function, which was observed by a number of authors. We establish a precise measure which explains the phenomenon, that the location of each Riemann zero is encoded in the distribution of large Riemann zeros. We also extend these results to zeros of more general $L$-functions. In particular, we show how the rank of an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$ is encoded in the sequences of zeros of other$L$-functions, not only the one associated to the curve.

We prove that the group of normalized cohomological invariants of degree $3$ modulo the subgroup of semidecomposable invariants of a semisimple split linear algebraic group $G$ is isomorphic to the torsion part of the Chow group of codimension-$2$ cycles of the respective versal $G$-flag. In particular, if $G$ is simple, we show that this factor group is isomorphic to the group of indecomposable invariants of $G$. As an application, we construct nontrivial cohomological invariants for indecomposable central simple algebras.

Kloosterman sums for a finite field $\mathbb{F}_{p}$ arise as Frobenius trace functions of certain local systems defined over $\mathbb{G}_{m,\mathbb{F}_{p}}$. The moments of Kloosterman sums calculate the Frobenius traces on the cohomology of tensor powers (or symmetric powers, exterior powers, etc.) of these local systems. We show that when $p$ ranges over all primes, the moments of the corresponding Kloosterman sums for $\mathbb{F}_{p}$ arise as Frobenius traces on a continuous $\ell$-adic representation of $\text{Gal}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q})$ that comes from geometry. We also give bounds on the ramification of these Galois representations. All of this is done in the generality of Kloosterman sheaves attached to reductive groups introduced by Heinloth, Ngô and Yun [Ann. of Math. (2) 177 (2013), 241–310]. As an application, we give proofs of conjectures of Evans [Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 138 (2010), 517–531; Israel J. Math. 175 (2010), 349–362] expressing the seventh and eighth symmetric power moments of the classical Kloosterman sum in terms of Fourier coefficients of explicit modular forms. The proof for the eighth symmetric power moment conjecture relies on the computation done in Appendix B by C. Vincent.

Following Jacquet, Lapid and Rogawski, we define a regularized period of an automorphic form on $\text{GL}_{n+1}\times \text{GL}_{n}$ along the diagonal subgroup $\text{GL}_{n}$ and express it in terms of the Rankin–Selberg integral of Jacquet, Piatetski-Shapiro and Shalika. This extends the theory of Rankin–Selberg integrals to all automorphic forms on $\text{GL}_{n+1}\times \text{GL}_{n}$.

In previous work, Ohno conjectured, and Nakagawa proved, relations between thecounting functions of certain cubic fields. These relations may be viewed as complements to the Scholz reflection principle, and Ohno and Nakagawa deduced them as consequences of ‘extra functional equations’ involving the Shintani zeta functions associated to the prehomogeneous vector space of binary cubic forms. In the present paper, we generalize their result by proving a similar identity relating certain degree-$\ell$ fields to Galois groups $D_{\ell }$ and $F_{\ell }$, respectively, for any odd prime $\ell$; in particular, we give another proof of the Ohno–Nakagawa relation without appealing to binary cubic forms.

In this article we prove that the Weinstein conjecture holds for contact manifolds $({\rm\Sigma},{\it\xi})$ for which $\text{Cont}_{0}({\rm\Sigma},{\it\xi})$ is non-orderable in the sense of Eliashberg and Polterovich [Partially ordered groups and geometry of contact transformations, Geom. Funct. Anal. 10 (2000), 1448–1476]. More precisely, we establish a link between orderable and hypertight contact manifolds. In addition, we prove for certain contact manifolds a conjecture by Sandon [A Morse estimate for translated points of contactomorphisms of spheres and projective spaces, Geom. Dedicata 165 (2013), 95–110] on the existence of translated points in the non-degenerate case.

We prove the integral Tate conjecture for cycles of codimension $2$ on smooth cubic fourfolds over an algebraic closure of a field finitely generated over its prime subfield and of characteristic different from $2$ or $3$. The proof relies on the Tate conjecture with rational coefficients, proved in that setting by the first author, and on an argument of Voisin coming from complex geometry.

We generalize the work of Bertolini and Darmon on the anticyclotomic main conjecture for elliptic curves to modular forms of higher weight.

Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over a field $k$. In this paper we define a descending filtration $\{F^{r}\}_{r\geqslant 0}$ of the group $\mathit{CH}_{0}(A)$ and prove that the successive quotients $F^{r}/F^{r+1}\otimes \mathbb{Z}[1/r!]$ are isomorphic to the group $(K(k;A,\dots ,A)/Sym)\otimes \mathbb{Z}[1/r!]$, where $K(k;A,\dots ,A)$ is the Somekawa $K$-group attached to $r$-copies of the abelian variety $A$. In the special case when $k$ is a finite extension of $\mathbb{Q}_{p}$ and $A$ has split multiplicative reduction, we compute the kernel of the map $\mathit{CH}_{0}(A)\otimes \mathbb{Z}[\frac{1}{2}]\rightarrow \text{Hom}(Br(A),\mathbb{Q}/\mathbb{Z})\otimes \mathbb{Z}[\frac{1}{2}]$, induced by the pairing $\mathit{CH}_{0}(A)\times Br(A)\rightarrow \mathbb{Q}/\mathbb{Z}$.

Let $\Vert \cdot \Vert$ denote the distance to the nearest integer and, for a prime number $p$, let $|\cdot |_{p}$ denote the $p$-adic absolute value. Over a decade ago, de Mathan and Teulié [Problèmes diophantiens simultanés, Monatsh. Math. 143 (2004), 229–245] asked whether $\inf _{q\geqslant 1}$$q\cdot \Vert q{\it\alpha}\Vert \cdot |q|_{p}=0$ holds for every badly approximable real number ${\it\alpha}$ and every prime number $p$. Among other results, we establish that, if the complexity of the sequence of partial quotients of a real number ${\it\alpha}$ grows too rapidly or too slowly, then their conjecture is true for the pair $({\it\alpha},p)$ with $p$ an arbitrary prime.

In this paper we consider Grassmannians in arbitrary characteristic. Generalizing Kapranov’s well-known characteristic-zero results, we construct dual exceptional collections on them (which are, however, not strong) as well as a tilting bundle. We show that this tilting bundle has a quasi-hereditary endomorphism ring and we identify the standard, costandard, projective and simple modules of the latter.

We prove a Givental-style mirror theorem for toric Deligne–Mumford stacks ${\mathcal{X}}$. This determines the genus-zero Gromov–Witten invariants of ${\mathcal{X}}$ in terms of an explicit hypergeometric function, called the $I$-function, that takes values in the Chen–Ruan orbifold cohomology of ${\mathcal{X}}$.

This paper develops a general theory of canonical bases and how they arise naturally in the context of categorification. As an application, we show that Lusztig’s canonical basis in the whole quantized universal enveloping algebra is given by the classes of the indecomposable 1-morphisms in a categorification when the associated Lie algebra is of finite type and simply laced. We also introduce natural categories whose Grothendieck groups correspond to the tensor products of lowest- and highest-weight integrable representations. This generalizes past work of the author’s in the highest-weight case.

The goal of this paper is to obtain restrictions on the prime-to-$p$ quotient of the étale fundamental group of a smooth projective variety in characteristic $p\geqslant 0$. The results are analogues of some theorems from the study of Kähler groups. Our first main result is that such groups are indecomposable under coproduct. The second result gives a classification of the pro-$\ell$ parts of one-relator groups in this class.

We analyse the $\text{mod}~p$ étale cohomology of the Lubin–Tate tower both with compact support and without support. We prove that there are no supersingular representations in the $H_{c}^{1}$ of the Lubin–Tate tower. On the other hand, we show that in $H^{1}$ of the Lubin–Tate tower appears the $\text{mod}~p$ local Langlands correspondence and the $\text{mod}~p$ local Jacquet–Langlands correspondence, which we define in the text. We discuss the local-global compatibility part of the Buzzard–Diamond–Jarvis conjecture which appears naturally in this context.

Assuming the Tate conjecture and the computability of étale cohomology with finite coefficients, we give an algorithm that computes the Néron–Severi group of any smooth projective geometrically integral variety, and also the rank of the group of numerical equivalence classes of codimension $p$ cycles for any $p$.

Let ${\rm\Gamma}(n,p)$ denote the binomial model of a random triangular group. We show that there exist constants $c,C>0$ such that if $p\leqslant c/n^{2}$, then asymptotically almost surely (a.a.s.) ${\rm\Gamma}(n,p)$ is free, and if $p\geqslant C\log n/n^{2}$, then a.a.s. ${\rm\Gamma}(n,p)$ has Kazhdan’s property (T). Furthermore, we show that there exist constants $C^{\prime },c^{\prime }>0$ such that if $C^{\prime }/n^{2}\leqslant p\leqslant c^{\prime }\log n/n^{2}$, then a.a.s. ${\rm\Gamma}(n,p)$ is neither free nor has Kazhdan’s property (T).

Let ${\rm\Pi}$ be an irreducible unitary completion of a locally algebraic $\text{GL}_{2}(\mathbf{Q}_{p})$-representation. We describe those first-order deformations of ${\rm\Pi}$ which are themselves completions of a locally algebraic representation. This answers a question of Paškūnas and has direct applications to the Breuil–Mézard conjecture.

Consider a smooth quasi-projective variety $X$ equipped with a $\mathbb{C}^{\ast }$-action, and a regular function $f:X\rightarrow \mathbb{C}$ which is $\mathbb{C}^{\ast }$-equivariant with respect to a positive weight action on the base. We prove the purity of the mixed Hodge structure and the hard Lefschetz theorem on the cohomology of the vanishing cycle complex of $f$ on proper components of the critical locus of $f$, generalizing a result of Steenbrink for isolated quasi-homogeneous singularities. Building on work by Kontsevich and Soibelman, Nagao, and Efimov, we use this result to prove the quantum positivity conjecture for cluster mutations for all quivers admitting a positively graded nondegenerate potential. We deduce quantum positivity for all quivers of rank at most 4; quivers with nondegenerate potential admitting a cut; and quivers with potential associated to triangulations of surfaces with marked points and nonempty boundary.

Grothendieck duality theory assigns to essentially finite-type maps $f$ of noetherian schemes a pseudofunctor $f^{\times }$ right-adjoint to $\mathsf{R}f_{\ast }$, and a pseudofunctor $f^{!}$ agreeing with $f^{\times }$ when $f$ is proper, but equal to the usual inverse image $f^{\ast }$ when $f$ is étale. We define and study a canonical map from the first pseudofunctor to the second. This map behaves well with respect to flat base change, and is taken to an isomorphism by ‘compactly supported’ versions of standard derived functors. Concrete realizations are described, for instance for maps of affine schemes. Applications include proofs of reduction theorems for Hochschild homology and cohomology, and of a remarkable formula for the fundamental class of a flat map of affine schemes.
