We classify log-canonical pairs $(X,{\rm\Delta})$ of dimension two such that $K_{X}+{\rm\Delta}$ is an ample Cartier divisor with $(K_{X}+{\rm\Delta})^{2}=1$, giving some applications to stable surfaces with $K^{2}=1$. A rough classification is also given in the case where ${\rm\Delta}=0$.

Under endoscopic assumptions about $L$-packets of unitary groups, we prove the local Gan–Gross–Prasad conjecture for tempered representations of unitary groups over $p$-adic fields. Roughly, this conjecture says that branching laws for $U(n-1)\subset U(n)$ can be computed using epsilon factors.

Thurston introduced shear deformations (cataclysms) on geodesic laminations–deformations including left and right displacements along geodesics. For hyperbolic surfaces with cusps, we consider shear deformations on disjoint unions of ideal geodesics. The length of a balanced weighted sum of ideal geodesics is defined and the Weil–Petersson (WP) duality of shears and the defined length is established. The Poisson bracket of a pair of balanced weight systems on a set of disjoint ideal geodesics is given in terms of an elementary $2$-form. The symplectic geometry of balanced weight systems on ideal geodesics is developed. Equality of the Fock shear coordinate algebra and the WP Poisson algebra is established. The formula for the WP Riemannian pairing of shears is also presented.

We study the Feynman integral for the three-banana graph defined as the scalar two-point self-energy at three-loop order. The Feynman integral is evaluated for all identical internal masses in two space-time dimensions. Two calculations are given for the Feynman integral: one based on an interpretation of the integral as an inhomogeneous solution of a classical Picard–Fuchs differential equation, and the other using arithmetic algebraic geometry, motivic cohomology, and Eisenstein series. Both methods use the rather special fact that the Feynman integral is a family of regulator periods associated to a family of $K3$ surfaces. We show that the integral is given by a sum of elliptic trilogarithms evaluated at sixth roots of unity. This elliptic trilogarithm value is related to the regulator of a class in the motivic cohomology of the $K3$ family. We prove a conjecture by David Broadhurst which states that at a special kinematical point the Feynman integral is given by a critical value of the Hasse–Weil $L$-function of the $K3$ surface. This result is shown to be a particular case of Deligne’s conjectures relating values of $L$-functions inside the critical strip to periods.

We determine the set of connected components of minuscule affine Deligne–Lusztig varieties for hyperspecial maximal compact subgroups of unramified connected reductive groups. Partial results are also obtained for non-minuscule closed affine Deligne–Lusztig varieties. We consider both the function field case and its analog in mixed characteristic. In particular, we determine the set of connected components of unramified Rapoport–Zink spaces.

For $n=2$ the statement in the title is a theorem of B. Poonen (2009). He uses a one-parameter family of varieties together with a theorem of Coray, Sansuc and one of the authors (1980), on the Brauer–Manin obstruction for rational points on these varieties. For $n=p$, $p$ any prime number, A. Várilly-Alvarado and B. Viray (2012) considered analogous families of varieties. Replacing this family by its $(2p+1)$th symmetric power, we prove the statement in the title using a theorem on the Brauer–Manin obstruction for rational points on such symmetric powers. The latter theorem is based on work of one of the authors with Swinnerton-Dyer (1994) and with Skorobogatov and Swinnerton-Dyer (1998), work generalising results of Salberger (1988).

Let $G$ be an algebraic real reductive group and $Z$ a real spherical $G$-variety, that is, it admits an open orbit for a minimal parabolic subgroup $P$. We prove a local structure theorem for $Z$. In the simplest case where $Z$ is homogeneous, the theorem provides an isomorphism of the open $P$-orbit with a bundle $Q\times _{L}S$. Here $Q$ is a parabolic subgroup with Levi decomposition $L\ltimes U$, and $S$ is a homogeneous space for a quotient $D=L/L_{n}$ of $L$, where $L_{n}\subseteq L$ is normal, such that $D$ is compact modulo center.

We compute coherent presentations of Artin monoids, that is, presentations by generators, relations, and relations between the relations. For that, we use methods of higher-dimensional rewriting that extend Squier’s and Knuth–Bendix’s completions into a homotopical completion–reduction, applied to Artin’s and Garside’s presentations. The main result of the paper states that the so-called Tits–Zamolodchikov 3-cells extend Artin’s presentation into a coherent presentation. As a byproduct, we give a new constructive proof of a theorem of Deligne on the actions of an Artin monoid on a category.

Let $Q$ be a finite quiver without oriented cycles, and let $k$ be an algebraically closed field. The main result in this paper is that there is a natural bijection between the elements in the associated Weyl group $W_{Q}$ and the cofinite additive quotient closed subcategories of the category of finite dimensional right modules over $kQ$. We prove this correspondence by linking these subcategories to certain ideals in the preprojective algebra associated to $Q$, which are also indexed by elements of $W_{Q}$.

We find a non-displaceable Lagrangian torus fiber in a semi-toric system which is superheavy with respect to a certain symplectic quasi-state. The proof employs both 4-dimensional techniques and those from symplectic field theory. In particular, our result implies Lagrangian $\mathbb{R}P^{2}$ is not a stem in $\mathbb{C}P^{2}$, answering a question of Entov and Polterovich.

We show how some of the refined tropical counts of Block and Göttsche emerge from the wall-crossing formalism. This leads naturally to a definition of a class of putative $q$-deformed Gromov–Witten invariants. We prove that this coincides with another natural $q$-deformation, provided by a result of Reineke and Weist in the context of quiver representations, when the latter is well defined.

The new homotopy theory of exact$\infty$-categories is introduced and employed to prove a Theorem of the Heart for algebraic $K$-theory (in the sense of Waldhausen). This implies a new compatibility between Waldhausen $K$-theory and Neeman $K$-theory. Additionally, it provides a new proof of the Dévissage and Localization theorems of Blumberg–Mandell, new models for the $G$-theory of schemes, and a proof of the invariance of $G$-theory under derived nil-thickenings.
