This study investigates L2 learners’ sensitivity to conventional and unconventional dative constructions in English. Experiment 1 focused on measuring EFL learners’ acceptability judgment and real-time processing of sentences containing both types of constructions. Experiment 2, involving ESL learners, aimed to explore the modulating effects of L2 learning contexts and proficiency. Results from Experiment 1 indicated that EFL learners demonstrated diminished sensitivity compared to L1 English speakers, both in acceptability judgment and self-paced reading, with L2 proficiency marginally affecting their performance. In Experiment 2, ESL learners exhibited sentence judgment and processing patterns akin to those of L1 speakers, with L2 proficiency influencing their acceptability judgment and not self-paced reading. These findings support the claim that while L2 learners have a reduced ability to take advantage of statistical preemption, this ability can improve with increased language experience. Crucially, our study extends this theoretical perspective to the domain of real-time sentence processing.

The influence of inter-typological variations on the processing of manner information has been extensively examined in the domain of motion. Manner, however, extends to more other semantic domains, as demonstrated in the onomasiological approach to manner analysis. This study, based on this approach, analyses the influence of directionality and cognitive load (measured by interpreting performance) on the transfer of manner under high cognitive demands, using bidirectional corpus data of consecutive interpreting between Chinese (an equipollently framed language) and English (a satellite-framed language). The results indicate that (1) increased interpreting performance correlates with higher transfer rates of both manner adjuncts and verbs; (2) transfer rates for manner verbs are significantly higher when interpreting into English (CE) than into Chinese (EC), supporting previous findings on the salience of manner in English; (3) interpreting direction influences resistance to cognitive load, with manner adjuncts showing greater resistance in the EC direction due to Chinese’s more flexible locus of manner information, while manner verbs exhibit better resistance in the CE direction, reflecting English’s higher verbal codability of manner. These findings suggest the broader applicability of Talmy’s typology to semantic domains beyond motion and to processing under high cognitive loads in different language combinations and interpreting modes.

Do different emotion terms trigger different metaphorical conceptualizations of emotions? What are the effects of the discourse context of the genre on metaphor choice in the conceptualization of emotion concepts? Finally, are such lexical and discourse–contextual effects on emotion-targeted metaphor choice quantifiable? Prior discourse-oriented research has demonstrated from a largely qualitative perspective that metaphor use is dynamic and sensitive to discursive contextual variables (e.g., Deignan et al., 2013; Semino 2010, 2011; Semino et al., 2013; Dorst 2015; Caballero 2016; Knapton & Rundblad, 2018). In the present study, these questions are addressed from a corpus-based multivariate perspective, where detailed qualitative analysis of found examples is combined with quantitative modeling. The study examines negative self-evaluative emotions in English, operationalized through their two nominal exponents, i.e., shame and embarrassment, as attested in the discourse context of three genres – fiction, magazine and spoken TV language. The data are first analyzed qualitatively for relevant contextual variables and then modelled quantitatively. The results demonstrate that while both lexical and genre effects are observed in metaphor choice in the conceptualization of negative self-evaluative emotional experience, their combined effect should also be accounted for, as these two variables are found to interact with each other.

Variability inherent to handwriting has been suggested to help establish more robust letter representations than other methods (e.g., typing). The present study tests whether encoding letter strings from a novel alphabet becomes more resistant to distortion when trained with variable input. Over 5 days, participants learned an 11-character artificial alphabet in a variable handwritten format involving reading, listening and handwriting practice. Another set of 11 artificial characters served as a visual control. Before and after the training, participants completed a masked priming same–different matching task with the novel alphabet letters. The key manipulation was in the primes: the identity/unrelated primes could be presented in a printed or distorted format. Results showed identity priming in both conditions, with a stronger effect for the printed primes. These effects increased post training for experimental and visual control scripts, indicating that exposure to variable input enhances distortion resistance even without explicit training. A second experiment assessed the transposed-letter effect – another marker of orthographic processing – in the novel scripts with an unprimed same–different matching task. Results showed that the transposed-letter effect occurred similarly before and after the training for both scripts. Therefore, letter shape variability when learning to read does not seem to boost orthographic processing.

This paper examines the linguistic relativity principle (Whorf, 1956) by investigating the impact of grammatical gender on cognition in simultaneous bilinguals of three-gendered Ukrainian and Russian. It examines whether speakers of three-gendered languages show grammatical gender effects on categorisation, empirically addressing claims that such effects are insignificant due to the presence of the neuter gender (Sera et al., 2002). We conducted two experiments using a similarity judgement paradigm while manipulating the presence of neuter gender stimuli (Phillips & Boroditsky, 2003). Experiment 1, including neuter gender, revealed no significant effects, compatible with earlier studies on three-gendered languages. Conversely, Experiment 2, excluding neuter gender stimuli, showed significant language effects. Bilingual participants rated pairs as more similar when grammatical genders in both languages were congruent with the biological sex of a character. Significant effects were also found for pairs with mismatching grammatical genders in Ukrainian and Russian. Participants with higher proficiency in Ukrainian rated pairs as more similar when the grammatical gender of a noun in Ukrainian was congruent with the character’s biological sex, and incongruent in Russian. Our findings thus provide the first empirical demonstration that the exclusion of neuter gender online induces grammatical gender effects in speakers of three-gendered languages.

Calendar calculations, the process of computing the target day or month, exhibit peculiar differences across languages. In systems like English, calendar labels are largely opaque (Tuesday, August), which invites calculations to rely more heavily on verbal listing. In transparent systems, like Chinese, habitual labeling of calendar terms numerically (Tuesday = Day 2, August = Month 8) facilitates fast numerical operations instead of verbal listing. This study examines the effects that different levels of transparency of the calendar naming system may have on calculations in the speakers’ first and second language. Chinese–English bilinguals were tested alongside English and Chinese controls. Forced-choice calendar calculations (day, month, hour and year) and self-reported strategies were used as tasks to tap into participants’ calculation speed, accuracy and temporal reasoning. In the calculation questions, we manipulated Distance (short/long), Direction (forward/backward), Input (linguistic/numerical) and Boundary (within/across). More complex Month calculations significantly differed across groups while easier day calculations did not. The English group reported reliance on verbal listing while the Chinese and the Bilingual groups preferred numerical reasoning. These findings bring new evidence for linguistic relativity in the form of modulations of calendar processing speed changing as a function of linguistic transparency, input type and task demand.

Thai and Korean have large inventories of adpositional particles, including source and goal markers. As reported in many languages, Thai and Korean adpositions also prominently exhibit the ‘goal-over-source asymmetry’ at multiple levels. This article supports this hypothesis on asymmetry from these two typologically and genealogically distinct languages. In both languages, goal markers far exceed source markers in number, confirming the hypothesis. Even among the allative-ablative-(locative) syncretic forms, the proportion of use for goal marking far exceeds that for source marking, again upholding the asymmetry hypothesis. The multiplicity of forms in the two polar categories is largely due to the stacking of multiple markers of (nearly-)synonymous adpositions as a strategy to reinforce meaning or to add finer shades of meaning. The multiplicity of forms is also due to frequent innovation of new forms, especially goal markers, in an effort to enhance expressivity and to entertain the desire for creativity. This is evident in the fact that the forms being innovated tend to carry more lexical content than older, fully grammaticalized forms, and thus carry more expressive potential. Drawing upon corpus data, this paper addresses the goal-over-source asymmetry in Korean and Thai from pragmatic and grammaticalization perspectives.

It has been argued that the incidental and arbitrary use of gender markings for inanimate concepts in language may affect the conceptualization or semantics of those inanimate concepts. The present article sought to replicate the findings of a classic paper that made this argument. Konishi used the potency dimension of the semantic differential method as an implicit measure of perceived gender. He reported that words for inanimate concepts of masculine grammatical gender were rated as higher in potency than words for the same concepts that had feminine grammatical gender. Two preregistered replication studies are reported here. The first was a conceptual replication of Konishi’s study that was conducted with 240 bilingual native speakers of either German or Spanish. Included in the study was a follow-up with 120 monolingual native English speakers. This data was used to test whether the grammatical gender in the native languages of German and Spanish speakers affected their sense of the potency of common inanimate categories when tested in a second language (English) in which they were fluent and the nouns had no grammatical gender. A second version of the study was conducted in the native languages of Spanish and German speakers, as a closer attempt at a replication of Konishi’s original study. The results of both studies provided evidence against the grammatical-gender hypothesis. Bayesian tests of both studies strongly favored the null hypothesis that there were no grammatical gender effects on implicit measures of perceived potency.

Languages vary in the way they encode motion. Following Talmy, languages can be divided into verb-framed (VF, henceforth) or satellite-framed (SF, henceforth), based on how they encode path of motion. However, this difference is not always clear-cut. Italian, for instance, is typically considered a VF language but has also been shown to display a hybrid pattern. Since variation has typically been considered a prerequisite for language change, we investigated whether variation in encoding Italian motion events could indicate incipient language change. We simulated the chain of language change adopting an apparent-time approach and investigated whether the impact of semantic properties (the manner verb’s association with directional motion) on the interpretation and productions of SF Italian constructions was affected by participants’ age. We found that, although this semantic property affects both the interpretation and production of SF constructions, younger participants more readily accepted SF constructions than older participants; this age difference, however, was not significant in the production task. We suggest that these findings might speak for incipient language change, which starts from comprehension and subsequently gradually influences production.

Designing effective language learning settings requires an understanding of the processes taking place in language learning and the way they interact. One important issue concerns the interaction between meaning and grammar. A number of studies have shown a beneficial effect of semantics in grammar learning. What is unclear, however, is how far this effect may be influenced by the presentation formats of the semantic content. In two experiments, participants performed rule search tasks on Latin sentences. In Experiment 1, we presented semantic information in the form of naturalistic photographs, whereas in Experiment 2, the semantic information was implemented by quasi-translations. The control groups did not receive any semantic information. Learning performance was assessed by a grammaticality-judgment task combined with a source-attributions task. In both experiments, participants in the with-semantics group outperformed the respective control groups. Yet, only in Experiment 1, participants report having more explicit than implicit knowledge. We argue that semantic information boosts the acquisition of grammatical structures regardless of the presentation format. Furthermore, we suggest that, consistent with multimedia learning theories, the pictorial presentation format of Experiment 1 helped to use working memory capacity efficiently, which may have led to the generation of more explicit knowledge.

While conducting experiments via the Internet has become quite popular recently, there is still an ongoing debate regarding the reliability of data obtained using this method, especially for subtle manipulations and measurements susceptible to minor changes (e.g., reaction times). In this series of two experiments employing the emotional Stroop task (using emotional word stimuli differing in their valence, arousal, and subjective significance levels), we compared the reaction times of participants taking part in experiments either in the laboratory (Experiment 1) or online (Experiment 2). In line with previous studies, there were no significant differences observed between the two experiments. Both modes of conducting studies yielded a similar pattern of results, namely interactions between valence and arousal, and a three-way interaction between valence, arousal, and subjective significance. We conclude that the pattern of disturbance in cognitive processing caused by affect is not susceptible to the setting that the subjects are in, which may be a significant argument for reliability of affect-related experiments conducted online.

Language is known to play a crucial role in influencing how humans perceive and categorize sensory stimuli, including odors. This study investigated the impact of linguistic labeling on odor categorization among bilingual participants proficient in Chinese (L1) and English (L2). We hypothesized that L1-like linguistic labels would more robustly propel the learning of new olfactory categories compared to a condition without language, and more familiar labels would better support odor category learning. The analysis focused on comparing learning trajectories and odor categorization performance of four groups, three in which odors were paired with different sets of verbal labels and a control group that categorized odors without any verbal labeling. Following four days of intensive training, the results showed that the groups with verbal labels numerically outperformed the control group, and that the less familiar the labels sounded the more successful categorization became. However, between-group differences did not reach statistical significance. These findings, while not conclusively supporting our hypotheses, provide insights into the complex relationship between linguistic familiarity and odor category formation. The results are nested within Ad Hoc Cognition, highlighting that variations in linguistic familiarity may not induce robust enough contextual changes to differentially affect how odor categories are formed.

The influence of grammatical gender on conceptual representations of gender has proven to be a controversial topic in the linguistic relativity literature, with empirical evidence in support of the Linguistic Relativity Hypothesis being highly task and context-dependent, as well as being modulated by the type of items being investigated (animates/inanimates). In this paper, we take a megastudy approach in order to investigate differences in results based on explicit and implicit paradigms that modulate the role of language and gender in their design. We present analyses of three experiments focussing on participants (total N = 4,621) with a grammatically gendered L1 (Czech), a non-grammatically gendered L1 (English) and L1-Czech in L2-English, and on three distinct semantic categories – people, animals and inanimates (total Nitems = 1,208). Our results indicate that the most reliable effects of grammatical gender influencing conceptual gender (outside of the domain of people) are observed for items representing animals, with Czech participants showing congruency effects in both explicit and implicit paradigms, even in their L2. The evidence for effects on inanimates is substantially weaker and is highly restrained to explicit tasks. We discuss these results in relation to the Linguistic Relativity Hypothesis and highlight important methodological considerations for future research.

Stereotype construction is a complex process, with multiple relations to language processing, that combines collective sociocultural factors with individual cognitive elements. Regarding gendered languages, there is a debate about the effect of grammatical gender on the representation of inanimate entities. To evaluate the potential interaction between gender stereotypes and gender morphology on words that refer to inanimate entities in three different communities of Spanish speakers, we developed a task of conscious judgments on the level of association to men or women of words that refer to objects. In a 3 × 2 × 3 × 2 design, we manipulated Semantic Bias (gender stereotypicality), with three levels (male, e.g., martillo, hammer-M; female, e.g., vestido, dress-M; neutral, e.g., lápiz, pencil-M); Morphology, with two levels (masculine, e.g., vestido, dress-M; feminine, e.g., pulsera, bracelet-F); Linguistic variety, with three levels (Argentine, Chilean and Peninsular) and Questionnaire, with two levels (related to men vs. related to women). The results showed that grammatical gender has an effect on words that refer to inanimate entities when those words do not carry a strong stereotypical association (neutral items), semantic bias related to gender stereotypes overshadows any potential effect of grammatical gender in biased items, and there are differences depending on the community (Argentine, Chilean and Peninsular).

Language control in the bilingual brain has remained in the limelight of research over the past decades. However, the mechanisms underlying bilingual language control may be more intricate than typically assumed due to the hierarchical nature of language. This study aimed to investigate the dynamics of bilingual language control at the phonetic level. Participants, who were speakers of Chinese, English and German, named the letters of the alphabet in English (L2) or German (L3) following an alternating language-switching paradigm. Two sets of letters were selected, differing in the phonological similarity of their pronunciation across the two languages, thereby allowing the exploration of cross-language phonological influences. Each participant completed two sessions of letter-naming tasks. In one session, seven phonologically similar letters were randomly repeated either in single-language blocks or in alternate-language blocks. In the other session, seven phonologically dissimilar letters were similarly manipulated. The results indicated local inhibition, reflected by switch costs and global inhibition, reflected by mixing costs. Reversed language dominance, another indicator of global inhibition, was not observed. However, there was a tendency for larger global inhibition to be applied to the more dominant language. Moreover, there was significantly faster naming for phonologically similar letters compared to dissimilar ones, suggesting a facilitation effect for both English and German, irrespective of whether letter naming occurred in single- or alternate-language blocks. These findings provided evidence for the role of inhibitory and facilitative mechanisms at the phonetic level, suggesting language-specific control in the bilingual brain and underscoring the complexity and dynamics of managing language control across multiple levels of processing.

This study investigates the relationships between a group of English constructions that exhibit similar formal and semantic properties and their accompanying gestures. The target constructions, collectively referred to as the [ADV and ADV] constructions, are divided into two types: the reduplicative adverbial constructions (RACs; over and over, again and again, on and on) and the oppositive adverbial constructions (OACs; back and forth, up and down, in and out). Using a statistical method called crossmodal collostructional analysis, the degree of associations between these constructions and their frequent gestural correlates is quantified to explore whether they are likely to form multimodal constructions. Consequently, it is concluded that some combinations of a target construction and its corresponding gesture are associated strongly enough to be regarded as potential multimodal constructions, whereas others are more like crossmodal collostructions, which are associated combinations of linguistic and gestural constructions but are nonetheless compositional. Finally, the embodied motivations for the potential multimodal constructions are also discussed by drawing on the notion of exbodiment.

Categorization is a dynamic cognitive process that organizes human knowledge. As such, categorization processes are integral of the linguistic system and are primarily manifested in the conceptual categories represented in semantic memory. Linguistic theory has proposed various models to describe the nature and structure of semantic categories. This paper reviews the traditional definitions of four types of linguistic categories (natural or taxonomic, ad hoc, radial and scripts) from the complex network paradigm. The semantic networks have been constructed from a semantic fluency task (Animals, Objects laid on the table, Games and Countryside) involving 680 native Spanish speakers. Both the structure of the network and its dynamics are analysed, remarking the process by which speakers create the network through their linguistic performance. For this purpose, traditional mathematical measures from network theory were employed, and new measures were proposed to more precisely distinguish between the four types of categories. The results support the principles of linguistic description, expanding and refining the properties of the different types of semantic categories. Furthermore, they highlight the importance of fine-grained modularity measures as key to interpreting differences in conceptual categories.
