One of the primary goals of biped locomotion is to generate and execute joint trajectories on a corresponding step plan that takes the robot from a start point to a goal while avoiding obstacles and consuming as little energy as possible. Past researchers have studied trajectory generation and step planning independently, mainly because optimal generation of robot gait using dynamic formulation cannot be done in real time. Also, most step-planning studies are for flat terrain guided by search heuristics. In the proposed method, a framework for generating trajectories as well as an overall step plan for navigation of a 12 degrees of freedom biped on an uneven terrain with obstacles is presented. In order to accomplish this, a dynamic model of the robot is developed and a trajectory generation program is integrated with it using gait variables. The variables are determined using a genetic algorithm based optimization program with the objective of minimizing energy consumption subject to balance and kinematic constraints of the biped. A database of these variables for various terrain angles and walking motions is used to train two neural networks, one for real-time trajectory generation and another for energy estimation. To develop a global navigation strategy, a weighted A* search is used to generate the footstep plan with energy considerations in sight. The efficacy of the approach is exhibited through simulation-based results on a variety of terrains.

The use of millirobots, particularly in swarm studies, would enable researchers to verify their proposed autonomous cooperative behavior algorithms under realistic conditions with a large number of agents. While multiple designs for such robots have been proposed, they, typically, require custom-made components, which make replication and manufacturing difficult, and, mostly, employ non-modular integral designs. Furthermore, these robots' proposed small sizes tend to limit sensory perception capabilities and operational time. Some have resolved few of the above issues through the use of extensions that, unfortunately, add to their size.

In contribution to the pertinent field, thus, a novel millirobot with an open-source design, addressing the above concerns, is presented in this paper. Our proposed millirobot has a modular design and uses easy to source, off-the-shelf components. The milli-robot-Toronto (mROBerTO) also includes a variety of sensors and has a 16 × 16 mm2 footprint. mROBerTO's wireless communication capabilities include ANT™, Bluetooth Smart, or both simultaneously. Data-processing is handled by an ARM processor with 256 KB of flash memory. Additionally, the sensing modules allow for extending or changing the robot's perception capabilities without adding to the robot's size. For example, the swarm-sensing module, designed to facilitate swarm studies, allows for measuring proximity and bearing to neighboring robots and performing local communications.

Extensive experiments, some of which are presented herein, have illustrated the capability of mROBerTO units for use in implementing a variety of commonly proposed swarm algorithms.

This paper considers applications where a human agent is navigating a semi-autonomous mobile robot in an environment with obstacles. The human input to the robot can be based on a desired navigation objective, which may not be known to the robot. Additionally, the semi-autonomous robot can be programmed to ensure obstacle avoidance as it navigates the environment. A shared control architecture can be used to appropriately fuse the human and the autonomy inputs to obtain a net control input that drives the robot. In this paper, an adaptive, near-continuous control allocation function is included in the shared controller, which continuously varies the control effort exerted by the human and the autonomy based on the position of the robot relative to obstacles. The developed control allocation function facilitates the human to freely navigate the robot when away from obstacles, and it causes the autonomy control input to progressively dominate as the robot approaches obstacles. A harmonic potential field-based non-linear sliding mode controller is developed to obtain the autonomy control input for obstacle avoidance. In addition, a robust feed-forward term is included in the autonomy control input to maintain stability in the presence of adverse human inputs, which can be critical in applications such as to prevent collision or roll-over of smart wheelchairs due to erroneous human inputs. Lyapunov-based stability analysis is presented to guarantee finite-time stability of the developed shared controller, i.e., the autonomy guarantees obstacle avoidance as the human navigates the robot. Experimental results are provided to validate the performance of the developed shared controller.

This paper reviews the state-of-the-art in robotic tails intended for inertial adjustment applications on-board mobile robots. Inspired by biological tails observed in nature, robotic tails provide a separate means to enhance stabilization, and maneuverability from the mobile robot's main form of locomotion, such as legs or wheels. Research over the past decade has primarily focused on implementing single-body rigid pendulum-like tail mechanisms to demonstrate inertial adjustment capabilities on-board walking, jumping and wheeled mobile robots. Recently, there have been increased efforts aimed at leveraging the benefits of both articulated and continuum tail mechanism designs to enhance inertial adjustment capabilities and further emulate the structure and functionalities of tail usage found in nature. This paper discusses relevant research in design, modeling, analysis and implementation of robotic tails onto mobile robots, and highlight how this work is being used to build robotic systems with enhanced performance capabilities. The goal of this article is to outline progress and identify key challenges that lay ahead.

Planning paths that are length or time optimized or both is an age-long problem for which numerous approaches have been proposed with varied degree of success depending on the imposed constraints. Among classical instances in the literature, the Traveling Salesman Problem and the Vehicle Routing Problem have been widely studied and frequently considered in the realm of mobile robotics. Understandably, the classical formulation for such problems do not take into account many different issues that arise in real-world scenarios, such as motion constraints and dynamic environments, commonly found in actual robotic systems, and consequently the solutions have been generalized in several ways. In this work, we present a broad and comprehensive review of the classical works and recent breakthroughs regarding the routing techniques ordinarily used in robotic systems and provide references to the most fundamental works in the literature.

This paper contributes by presenting a parameter identification procedure for n-degrees-of-freedom flexible joint robot manipulators. An advantage of the given procedure is the obtaining of robot parameters in a single experiment. Guidelines are provided for the computing of the joint position filtering and velocity estimation. The method relies in the filtered robot model, for which no acceleration measurements are required. The filtered model is expressed in regressor form, which allows applying a parameter identification procedure based on the least squares algorithm. In order to assess the performance of the proposed parameter identification scheme, an implementation of a least squares with forgetting factor (LSFF) parameter identification method is carried out. In order to assess the reliability of the tested identification schemes, a model-based trajectory tracking controller has been implemented twice in different conditions: one control experiment using the estimated parameters provided by the proposed scheme, and another experiment using the parameters given by the LSFF method. These real-time control experiments are compared with respect to numerical simulations using the estimated parameters for each identification method. For the proposed scheme, the comparison between experiments and numerical simulations indicates better accuracy in the torque and position prediction.

Cladding through laser metal deposition is a promising application of additive manufacturing. On the one hand, industrial robots are increasingly used in cladding because they provide wide wrist reorientation, which enables manufacturing of complex geometries. On the other hand, limitations in robot dynamics may prevent cladding of sharp edges and large objects. To overcome these issues, this paper aims at exploiting the residual degrees of freedom granted by the cladding process for the optimization of the deposition orientation. The proposed method optimizes the robot head orientation along a predefined path while coping with kino-dynamic constraints as well as process constraints. Experimental tests and results are reported and used to validate the approach.

In this paper, a new family of 3-degree-of-freedom planar parallel manipulators (PPMs), namely U-shape fixed base PPMs starting with an active prismatic joint on each leg, is proposed. In order to identify the best manipulators of this family, comparative kinematic and dynamic performance studies are performed. The kinematic performances are quantified through the local performance index, namely the kinematic isotropy. From the kinematic isotropy analysis results, it is observed that PPR-PRP-PRP, PRP-PRP-PRP and PRR-PRP-PRP configurations have better kinematic design aspects compared to other configurations of this family of U-shape fixed base parallel configurations. Further, from the workspace analysis, it is observed that the PPR-PRP-PRP configuration has a higher value of workspace to the total area required ratio compared to other configurations. This paper also presents a comparative dynamic performance analysis of these top-three U-shape fixed base configurations in terms of dynamic driving performance measures, and energy requirements for three different (fixed base size of the manipulators) aspect ratios under two different loading conditions. From the analyses results, it is perceived that the PRP-PRP-PRP configuration is requiring lower energy and dynamic driving performances than others. These analyses are done with the help of multi-body dynamic software, namely MSC ADAMS, and the results are validated through the help of real-time experiments conducted on in-house fabricated prototypes of these three PPMs. In specific, the energy consumption is measured and compared in this study. Experimental results demonstrated that the PRP-PRP-PRP manipulator displays a considerably better performance in terms of minimum energy requirement.

Latency hinders a mobile robot teleoperator's ability to perform remote tasks. However, this effect is not well modeled. This paper develops a model for teleoperator steering behavior as a PD controller based on projected lateral displacement, which was tuned to reflect user performance determined by a 31-subject user study under constant and variable latency (having mean latencies between 0 and 750 ms). Additionally, we determined that operator performance under variable latency could be mapped to the expected performance of an equivalent constant latency. We then tested additional latency distributions in simulation and demonstrated equivalent steering performance among several different latency distributions.

This paper addresses a problem of complete sensing coverage in 3D environments. We propose a distributed random algorithm to drive mobile robotic sensors on the vertices of a truncated octahedral grid for complete sensing coverage of a bounded 3D area. Furthermore, we develop a distributed algorithm for the self-deployment of mobile sensors to form a desired 3D geometric shape on the vertices of the truncated octahedral grid. These algorithms are developed based on some consensus rules that only rely on local information. The proposed algorithms utilize 3D grids for the coverage task. Several simulations are conducted to illustrate the validity of the proposed distributed sensing coverage and formation building algorithms for a mobile robotic sensor network. Also, we give mathematically rigorous proof of the convergence with probability 1 of our proposed algorithms.

A three-dimensional (3D) model of a novel 5-DoF type parallel manipulator with a couple-constrained wrench is constructed and its couple-constrained wrench is analyzed. First, the formulas are derived for solving the displacement, velocity, acceleration of the moving platform and moving links, and a workspace is constructed. Second, the formulas are derived for solving the inertial wrenches of the moving links. Third, a dynamics equation is established by considering the inertial wrenches and friction, and the formulas are derived for solving the dynamically active forces and the dynamically couple-constrained wrench. Finally, a numerical example is given to demonstrate the analytic solution of the kinematics and the dynamics, and the analytical solutions are verified by utilizing a simulation mechanism.

Programming robotic assembly for industrial small-batch production is challenging; hence, it is vital to increase robustness and reduce development effort in order to achieve flexible robotic automation. A human who has made an assembly error will often simply undo the process until the error is undone and then restart the assembly. Conceptually, robots could do the same. This paper introduces a programming model that enables robot assembly programs to be executed in reverse. We investigate the challenges in running robot programs backwards and present a classification of reversibility characteristics. We demonstrate how temporarily switching the direction of program execution can be an efficient error recovery mechanism. Moreover, we demonstrate additional benefits arising from supporting reversibility in an assembly language, such as increased code reuse and automatically derived disassembly sequences. As a default approach to reversibility, we use program inversion and statement-level inversion of commands, but with a novel override option providing alternative sequences for asymmetric reverse actions. To efficiently program for this model, this paper introduces a new domain-specific language, SCP-RASQ (Simple C++ Reversible Assembly SeQuences). In initial experiments, where 200 consecutive assemblies of two industrial cases were performed, 18 of 22 errors were corrected automatically using only the trial-and-error capabilities that come from reverse execution.

In this paper, an efficient motion planning method is proposed for a six-legged robot walking on irregular terrain. The method provides the robot with fast-generated free-gait motions to traverse the terrain with medium irregularities. We first of all introduce our six-legged robot with legs in parallel mechanism. After that, we decompose the motion planning problem into two main steps: first is the foothold selection based on a local footstep cost map, in which both terrain features and the robot mobility are considered; second is a whole-body configuration planner which casts the problem into a general convex optimization problem. Such decomposition reduces the complexity of the motion planning problem. Along with the two-step planner, discussions are also given in terms of the robot-environmental relationship, convexity of constraints and robot rotation integration. Both simulations and experiments are carried out on typical irregular terrains. The results demonstrate effectiveness of the planning method.

This paper proposed a novel type of bionic underwater robot (BUR). The undulation and jet propulsion modes on the self-propelled BUR were combined, and the kinematic characteristics of the two propulsion modes were thoroughly compared. First, the prototype and swimming strategy of the BUR were presented, and a dynamic model of the BUR was established based on several assumptions. Then, a central pattern generator (CPG) model allowing free adjustment of frequency and amplitude was employed to achieve the undulation propulsion of carangiform fish and the jet propulsion of jellyfish. Also, the kinematic characteristics of the two propulsion modes were investigated through experiments under different caudal fin actuation parameters. The experimental results indicate that the developed prototype can realize the undulation and jet propulsion by the means of the coordinated movement of the multi-caudal fins. By adjusting the CPG parameters, the BUR can switch the propulsion mode smoothly. Furthermore, the propulsion velocity of the BUR initially increased rapidly with the frequency and then slowed down when the frequency was greater than 0.8 Hz in both propulsion modes. The undulation propulsion velocity increased with the amplitude in the measurement ranges, however, the jet propulsion velocity initially increased quickly with the amplitude and then kept constant and even decreased when the amplitude was greater than 11 cm. Under the same caudal fin actuation parameters, the average velocity in undulation propulsion mode was higher than that in jet propulsion mode.

This paper presents a novel reconfigurable parallel mechanism, which can serve as a machine tool. The proposed parallel mechanism can change its structure parameters by driving a bevel gear system fixed in the base platform. First, the forward and inverse kinematics of the proposed mechanism are investigated. Second, the reachable workspace and Jacobian matrix are conducted. Based on the Jacobian matrix, the stiffness model and dexterity of the end effector are developed in detail. Finally, a multi-objective optimization is performed by using the Genetic Algorithm, and the workspace and global performance indexes of stiffness as well as the dexterity are considered as the performance indices to improve the performance of the reconfigurable parallel mechanism. Finally, Pareto frontier figure and several tables are provided to illustrate the results of the optimization. The results showed the proposed method has improved the performance of the reconfigurable machine tool in terms of its stiffness and dexterity.

This study examined the use of a state-dependent Riccati equation (SDRE) for controller design and analysis of cooperative manipulators. The connection of end-effectors when holding an object imports constraint and complexity into the problem. Optimal load distribution (OLD) was used to divide the load between arms using a desired rate and omitting Lagrange multipliers. General dynamic structure, OLD formulation, and controller design are presented for an arbitrary number of manipulators. State-dependent coefficient parameterizations for rigid and flexible joint manipulators assuming friction for joints of them were investigated by two methods: controlling each robot independently and an entire system of robots uniformly. The effectiveness of the method, a decrease in errors, and increased stability in motion were also observed. The increase in the number of manipulators greatly expanded the state vector of the system. The SDRE was able to address this by simulation of four arms, each one possessing seven degrees of freedom (DoF). Analyses of a practical model (Scout robot) consisting of two arms with three DoF were presented and the results for connected arms and free arms were compared. The experimental data validated the simulation results and indicated that cooperation definitely improves load-carrying capacity and precision of trajectory tracking.

The ability to reliably estimate free space is an essential requirement for efficient and safe robot navigation. This paper presents a novel system, built upon a stochastic framework, which estimates free space quickly from stereo data, using self-supervised learning. The system relies on geometric data in the close range of the robot to train a second-stage appearance-based classifier for long range areas in a scene. Experiments are conducted on board an unmanned ground vehicle, and the results demonstrate the advantages of the proposed technique over other self-supervised systems.

This paper presents an approach that integrates the geometric notion of clearance (distance to the closest obstacle) into sampling-based motion planning to enable a robot to safely navigate in challenging environments. To reach the goal destination, the robot must obey geometric and differential constraints that arise from the underlying motion dynamics and the characteristics of the environment. To produce safe paths, the proposed approach expands a motion tree of collision-free and dynamically feasible motions while maintaining locally maximal clearance. In distinction from related work, rather than explicitly constructing the medial axis, the proposed approach imposes a grid or a triangular tessellation over the free space and uses the clearance information to construct a weighted graph where edges that connect regions with low clearance have high cost. Minimum-cost paths over this graph produce high-clearance routes that tend to follow the medial axis without requiring its explicit construction. A key aspect of the proposed approach is a route-following component which efficiently expands the motion tree to closely follow such high-clearance routes. When expansion along the current route becomes difficult, edges in the tessellation are penalized in order to promote motion-tree expansions along alternative high-clearance routes to the goal. Experiments using vehicle models with second-order dynamics demonstrate that the robot is able to successfully navigate in complex environments. Comparisons to the state-of-the-art show computational speedups of one or more orders of magnitude.

Novel kinematic architectures can be alternatives for designing energy efficient robotic systems. In this work, the impact of kinematic redundancies in the energy consumption of a planar PKM, the 3PRRR manipulator, is experimentally verified. Because of the presence of the kinematic redundancies, the inverse kinematic problem presents infinity solutions. In this way, a redundancy resolution scheme based on the Model Predictive Control technique is proposed and exploited. It can be concluded that the energy consumption of the non-redundant parallel manipulator 3RRR for executing predefined tasks can be considerably reduced by the inclusion of kinematic redundancies.

This study proposes and investigates a new type of bi-criteria minimization (BCM) for the motion planning and control of redundant robot manipulators to address the discontinuity problem in the infinity-norm acceleration minimization (INAM) scheme and to guarantee the final joint velocity of motion to be approximate to zero. This new type is based on the combination of minimum weighted velocity norm (MWVN) and INAM criteria, and thus is called the MWVN–INAM–BCM scheme. In formulating such a scheme, joint-angle, joint-velocity, and joint-acceleration limits are incorporated. The proposed MWVN–INAM–BCM scheme is reformulated as a quadratic programming problem solved at the joint-acceleration level. Simulation results based on the PUMA560 robot manipulator validate the efficacy and applicability of the proposed MWVN–INAM–BCM scheme in robotic redundancy resolution. In addition, the physical realizability of the proposed scheme is verified in practical application based on a six-link planar robot manipulator.
