This paper outlines a structured bibliometric methodology for analyzing rural history as a scholarly field from 1989 to 2025. Drawing from Scopus, a filtered dataset of 436 research articles was compiled through a multi-phase selection process focused on thematic and disciplinary relevance. Using tools such as CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and bibliometrix (R), the study explores patterns in authorship, citations, and keyword usage, offering insights into the field’s development. The findings demonstrate a clear shift from traditional European agrarian narratives toward more diverse, global, and interdisciplinary approaches, integrating themes from cultural history, political ecology, and spatial analysis. Clustering and trend analyses reveal how rural history has evolved methodologically and conceptually, moving beyond its empirical foundations toward more critical and multi-scalar perspectives. This framework offers a replicable model for future historiographical assessments and contributes to understanding the role of rural history within broader academic discourse.

This article tackles the paucity of research conducted on indoor relief in the countryside during the Old Poor Law by examining ten parish workhouses in Lincolnshire. It argues that parish workhouses developed into institutions which were circumstantially targeted at the poor. The workhouse boundary was permeable as paupers often experienced indoor and outdoor relief across a life-cycle of need, alongside other support strategies distinct from the poor law. Apart from providing relief for a range of paupers, the workhouse played a deterrent capacity in the negotiated process of relief. To make this effective, workhouse life underscored a loss of independence through a reduced material life and regimented daily routines which saw work as a centrality. All this was overseen by management regimes frequently led by workhouse masters and mistresses, crucial yet understudied personalities in the administration of the Old Poor Law.

This article examines women’s work in rural areas of the Republic of Venice between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, with a focus on the district of Padua. By applying the verb-oriented method to judicial sources, it reconstructs a detailed and nuanced picture of female labour, highlighting the extent and continuity of women’s economic activities. The findings show that women were engaged across all sectors of the economy, including sectors far beyond care and housework. They played an active role in agriculture, trade, and manufacturing. Moreover, their work was fully integrated into the household economy, structured around seasonal labour demands, and performed throughout the year. A comparison with previous studies suggests that women’s work in the Venetian countryside aligned closely with broader European patterns. These findings underscore the fundamental contribution of female labour to household survival, challenging long-standing assumptions about women’s economic roles in Italy and the Mediterranean.

This paper examines the impact of weather conditions on wheat production in the Florence and Siena regions in the early modern age, emphasizing the need to contextualize this influence within historical, geographical, and economic frameworks. Our quantitative findings suggest that, on average, hotter and wetter spring and summer weather conditions were beneficial for wheat yields in early modern Tuscany, though this relationship holds true only within a certain optimal range; otherwise, extreme conditions are detrimental. However, the boundaries between optimal and non-optimal conditions vary based on the historical, economic, and geographical context, ultimately determining the level of agricultural productivity. Specifically, we argue that two macro causes – primary production factors and the degree of market volatility – play a crucial role in shaping the effects of weather on agricultural outcomes. First, soil conditions, technology (broadly defined), and capital-labour ratios are the most significant determinants of agricultural productivity. Second, competitive and integrated markets, when supported by countercyclical institutions – in our case, the annona system – can mitigate the negative consequences of adverse weather by reducing the resulting volatility. Where such institutions are weak or absent, speculation (i.e., hoarding), driven by price expectations under high volatility, may arise and amplify disruptions.

This article examines wool cooperatives in the American West between 1880 and 1930, demonstrating how institutional requirements systematically transformed democratic marketing organizations through capacity-based selection pressures. Analysis of government reports and trade publications reveals that individual associations experienced extreme volatility despite aggregate growth statistics, with survival rates correlating strongly with organizational capacity. The sophisticated marketing tools that emerged – binding multiyear contracts and deferred payment structures – imposed fixed costs and liquidity demands that operated as effective membership filters, systematically excluding smaller producers. While cooperative market share peaked in the early 1920s before declining substantially by 1930, western geographic concentration increased, revealing selection by producer characteristics rather than reduced crisis motivation. This research extends the Hoffman and Libecap framework by demonstrating how internal producer heterogeneity reshaped institutional objectives despite commodity characteristics favouring broad-based cooperation.

This paper analyses the precarious balance between the economic demands of landowners and the defence of public interest in the Tuscan Maremma in a significant time frame for Italian land reclamation (from the 1860s to the 1950s). Increasing productivity in marginal lands was the primary reason for reclamation work, but the considerable investment involved did not always ensure significant gain in land value. Landowners exerted powerful pressure on the state to contribute to the implementation of more complex projects, but the state also needed their co-operation for its territory-wide plans. This new land acquisition fitted into a complex socio-economic context in which poverty, social tensions, health, and sanitation challenges as well as migration demanded incisive political policies which could not always be fully implemented. This essay shows that certain economic factors outweighed others and that, more often than not, the public social policies adopted played into the hands of private economic interests, and the large-scale reclamation work implemented in the Maremma led to the almost total disappearance of a deeply rooted farming tradition, the silvo-pastoral economy.

This article examines the role of nature in Finnish pig production in the first decades of the 1900s by focusing on two distinct types of pigs, namely spring piglets and autumn piglets, who were raised in physical surroundings that changed with the seasons. I will investigate how different seasonal changes, such as temperature variations and availability of natural feeds, impacted the spaces and practices within which piglets were raised. This article also includes the analysis of how humans attempted to substitute for nature at times when natural benefits, such as warm weather or sunlight, were not available. Furthermore, I will analyse how the bodies and experiences of spring and autumn piglets reflected the different sets of circumstances in which they were raised. Broadly, this article examines how an animal production system negotiated its relations to nature and natural phenomena in the early stages of commercialization and modernization.

Government efforts to improve land productivity during 1917–1918 encouraged a wider interest in land drainage schemes. Building on the efforts of the County War Agricultural Executive Committees, new legislation brought local authorities into play to provide governance and direction; a proliferation of local bodies managing drainage schemes ensued, with a common aim that those benefitting from improved drainage should fund these schemes. Government support, in the form of financial assistance, remained firm after the War as such schemes were seen as opportunities to create employment for former servicemen. But in a scheme to clear rivers flowing across north Hampshire, west Surrey, and south Berkshire, landowners pushed back, manoeuvring to gain control of the scheme with the aim of reducing charges on landowners. A successful scheme ensued, managed by a prominent land agent working for one of the largest estate owners, but was marred by disagreement over its finances, scope and benefits.

This paper examines Funan County’s ‘Three-Fix’ policy as a significant case of China’s agricultural procurement reforms. Utilising extensive archival materials and data, it focuses on the interactions between central and local governments in shaping rural governance and agricultural policy. The study evaluates the policy’s effectiveness in stabilising grain procurement and fostering cooperative relationships between the state and farmers, while also identifying its limitations, such as uneven implementation, local resistance, and inconsistent enforcement. By analysing the policy’s impact on farmers’ production behaviours, social psychology, and local governance, the research uncovers the intricate political economy underlying early reforms in the People’s Republic of China. The findings highlight the necessity of balancing central and local flexibility in policy design and implementation and offer valuable lessons for contemporary rural governance and development.

Four-wheeled, 25–50 horsepower tractors imported to China from other socialist countries in the 1950s were a symbol of modernity and a source of problems. They were introduced to North China to increase multiple cropping. No significant increase in multiple cropping occurred in that region. The cost of tractor services far outweighed what could be earned with the labour they displaced in the 1950s and early 1960s. However, the government remained committed to them, even as it promoted cheaper five horsepower two-wheeled tractors. Greater use of four-wheeled tractors was sustained by the rapid downgrading of the hitherto privileged role of the tractor driver, alongside an ad hoc system of tacit subsidies. These changes meant deviation from the original vision for tractors. The dire fate of draught livestock during the era of rural collectivisation was an important reason for persevering with four-wheeled tractors even as the country turned away from Soviet development models.

Thirty-five years have passed since the killing of the South African refugee Jerry Masslo in Villa Literno in 1989 to the death of the Indian labourer Satnam Singh in Latina in 2024, marked by exploitation, violence, and abuses in the Southern Italian countryside. Only a few journalistic reports have documented this situation, and the article aims to fill this historiographical gap with a timely investigation, calling for the start of an international debate on the inhuman working conditions of foreigners in the countryside of developed countries. The article highlights some variables that have remained steady over time: the absence of public policies to regularise agricultural labour, the widespread presence of informal settlements in the countryside with risks to the safety of farm labourers, the low wage levels that violate people’s dignity, the persistent illegality in recruiting labour through ‘caporalato’ (forced labour), deaths at work due to exploitation and climate change. These are elements of critical analysis that call for an in-depth reflection on how to improve the working conditions of labourers in the rural economy today. The contribution of foreigners, as emerges from the quantitative analysis in the article, is irreplaceable for the well-being of developed societies. This is why history has an essential ethical and civic mission in highlighting the conditions of severe exploitation in which they are forced to work.
