Social interaction is a primary aspect of communicating how others judge us. It allows us to update ourselves and our expectations about others. While humans generally exhibit self-related positive biases in their updating behavior, theoretical accounts propose that this biased processing is attenuated, absent, or negatively biased in participants with depressive symptoms. The process of aligning and integrating social evaluative feedback in realistic interaction scenarios that would test this assumption is, however, lacking. We provide an event-related potential (ERP) study that combines neuronal (feedback-related negativity [FRN] and late positive potential [LPP]) and behavioral measures of evaluative feedback processing and updating behavior.
Methods
We selected healthy adults (N = 62) with depression scores spanning a range of low to high values, as measured by the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Participants received feedback from supposed experts and peer senders, with the feedback being manipulated to be worse, congruent, or better than the participants’ self-ratings.
Results
Participants with higher depression scores exhibited more negative initial self-ratings and developed a more negative feedback expectation across the experiment. In addition, we found that higher depression scores led to more negative updating toward worse expert feedback and less positive updating after better peer feedback. Concerning ERPs, unexpected but not self-incongruent feedback increased the FRN, while both types of incongruence increased the LPP. Finally, BDI scores correlated with LPP amplitudes for all feedback.
Conclusions
The results contribute to a deeper understanding of how individuals process and integrate social evaluative feedback and its relation to depressive symptoms.
The clinical presentation and course of illness of older-age bipolar disorder (OABD) are highly variable. In addition, the presentation and course of bipolar disorder (BD) differ between females and males. This study aims to carry out a network analysis of older people with symptoms compatible with BD. Using a sample from the MentDis_ICF65+ study, a symptom network analysis was conducted according to gender and age in 555 people over 65 in the Community of Madrid (Spain). The network was estimated using the InsingFit package that implements a procedure called eLasso. These results reveal differences in the strength, closeness, and betweenness of the networks according to gender and for the age groups 65–74 and 75–84. Females present a network that is much more sparse, with a lower density, and consisting of two sub-networks: one composed of TALK (more talkative than usual) and RACIN (a flight of ideas, racing thoughts) and the other of PAINF (activities with painful consequences), SLEEP (the decreased need for sleep), GRAND (inflated self-esteem), and AGIT (psychomotor agitation). In the case of men, a denser network is obtained, with greater connections between all the symptoms, being the edge with greater weight than the one integrated by RACIN and GRAND. In relation to age, it is possible to observe changes in the model between the two age groups. These network differences support viewing OABD dimensionally and emphasize considering gender and age to improve understanding and personalize treatments for older adults with bipolar disorder symptoms.
Plan repair is the problem of solving a given planning problem by using a solution plan of a similar problem. This paper presents the first approach where the repair has to be done optimally, that is, we aim at finding a minimum distance plan from an input plan; we do so by introducing a number of compilation schemes that convert a classical planning problem into another where optimal plans correspond to plans with the minimum distance from an input plan. We also address the problem of finding a minimum distance plan from a set of input plans, instead of just one plan. Our experiments using a number of planners show that such a simple approach can solve many problems optimally and more effectively than replanning from scratch for a large number of cases. Also, the approach proves competitive with ${\mathsf{LPG}\textrm{-}\mathsf{adapt}}$, a state-of-the-art approach for the plan repair problem.
Debates over the links between ethnicity and conflict often focus on the national level and take an ahistorical approach. This approach hides cases of ethnic conflict that arise at the subnational level and leaves unanswered questions over how ethnicity became a driver of conflict. This article explores these blind spots, using three cases in the African Great Lakes region. The cases reviewed here are the bipolar situations of Hema v. Lendu in Ituri (DRC), Banyarwanda/Banyamulenge v. ‘Autochthons’ in South and North Kivu (DRC), and Hima v. Iru in Ankole (Uganda). These cases suggest that polarisation is a more useful approach than fragmentation, but simple correlations between ethnic dyads and conflict obfuscate the nature and depths of the cleavages, as well as the mechanisms fuelling them. We elaborate on the pathways of escalation, highlighting how and when elite manipulations can activate deeply held identitarian norms. We conclude by emphasising the many lulls and moments of de-escalation, countering the portrayal of ethnic conflict as somehow inevitable.
To what extent does refugee protection in Western Europe depend on the ethno-religious and gender identity of asylum seekers? This article examines how selective humanitarianism, shaped by the identity of asylum seekers and migrants, shapes their protection status. It offers an analysis of Germany’s response to Yezidi refugees, in comparison with that of France, in the wake of the genocidal campaign carried out by the Islamic State in 2014. Drawing on fieldwork that includes interviews with Yezidi refugees and stakeholders in Germany, we argue that contemporary asylum regimes operate through three interrelated mechanisms: the securitization of certain groups, selective humanitarian exceptions, and neoliberal selection criteria. The Yezidi experience illustrates how these mechanisms generate hierarchies of protection, wherein even recognized victims of genocide must meet increasingly economic thresholds to secure lasting refuge. While specialized programs for women survivors represent important humanitarian innovations, they often exclude male family members, thereby producing new forms of vulnerability. Struggling to align with dominant narratives of economically valuable migrants, Yezidis encounter a renewed form of liminality in Europe.
The January 2025 Los Angeles wildland-urban interface wildfires represent a significant environmental disaster, resulting in widespread evacuations. Beyond the immediate physical and economic devastation, wildfires can have profound and lasting impacts on the mental well-being of affected populations. This study compared mental health outcomes between Southern California residents who evacuated due to the fires and those who did not evacuate.
Methods
Southern California residents (N = 739) were surveyed 2-3 months after the January 2025 wildfires. Logistic regression models assessed the association of evacuation status with depression, anxiety, and PTSD, adjusting for demographics and baseline pre-fire levels of depression and anxiety.
Results
Evacuating was significantly associated with higher odds of depression (AOR = 1.75 [1.08-2.85]) and PTSD (AOR = 2.44 [1.36-4.35]), after controlling for pre-fire mental health status and other demographic covariates. Evacuation status was not associated with anxiety.
Conclusions
These findings support previous research linking wildfire exposure to adverse mental health outcomes and highlight the importance of targeted mental health screening and support for wildfire evacuees, who are at increased risk for depression and PTSD.
Children’s Advocacy Centers (CACs) use multidisciplinary teams to respond to child abuse allegations. These fluid teams can benefit from team training to enhance team functioning and performance and strengthen the workforce, but they need guidance and resources to support the implementation of team training.
Methods:
We conducted a cluster-randomized hybrid effectiveness-implementation trial to test the effectiveness of team training and evaluate a self-guided implementation process. Six rural CACs (N = 172 team members) were randomized to TeamTRACS (Team Training in Roles, Awareness, Communication, & Support; n = 4) or a waitlist comparison (n = 2). Simultaneous mixed methods evaluated the effectiveness of TeamTRACS (QUAN + qual) and the implementation process (quan + QUAL).
Results:
Reactions to TeamTRACS were positive (mean ratings > 4.5 on 1–5 scale), and TeamTRACS significantly increased teamwork knowledge (estimated marginal means = 80% vs. 75% [intent-to-treat]; 85% vs. 76% [training attendance]). There were no effects on skill use or work-related outcomes. Changes in team-level outcomes were small and inconsistent; one TeamTRACS team made substantial improvements. Reactions to self-guided implementation were positive (mean ratings > 4 on 1–5 scale). However, only one team completed the implementation process. Challenges included difficulty forming and maintaining a change team, turnover and understaffing, and competing priorities and a short timeframe.
Conclusions:
Overall, TeamTRACS and its self-guided implementation process were positively received. Incomplete implementation may have limited TeamTRACS’ effectiveness. Longer timeframes and external support may improve the implementation of team training in low-resource settings.
Cyber risk is an important consideration in today’s risk management and insurance industries. However, the statistical features of cyber risk, including concerns of solvency for cyber insurance providers, are still emerging. This study investigates the dynamics of ransomware severity, specifically focusing on different statistical dimensions of extortion payments from ransomware attacks across various ransomware strains and/or variants. Our results indicate that extortion payments are not identically distributed across ransomware strains/variants, and thus violate necessary assumptions for solvency determinations using classical ruin theory. These findings emphasize the importance of re-examining these assumptions under empirical data and implementing dynamic cyber risk modelling for portfolio losses from extortion payments from ransomware attacks. Additionally, such findings suggest that removing coverage for extortion payments from insurance policies may protect cyber insurance firms from insolvency, as well as create a potential deterrence effect against ransomware threat actors due to lack of extortion payment from victims. Our work has implications for insurance regulators, policymakers, and national security advisors focused on the financial impact of extortion payments from ransomware attacks.
Research has demonstrated that emotion modulates specificity in recollection of personally experienced events and the words individuals use during recollection reflect their psychological states. Here, we investigated the linguistic features of autobiographical memory (AM) of different specificity for different emotional events to address how emotion would modulate the psychological mechanisms underlying AM of different specificity. We analyzed 122 participants’ narratives of AM categorized as specific and general under happy, sad, angry, fearful and neutral cues. The use of three groups (emotional process, cognitive process and thinking style) of words was, respectively, compared between specific and general AM in each emotion condition. In retrieval of sad, angry and fearful events, general relative to specific AM contained more affective process words, notably negative words. General AM featured more cognitive process words than specific AM, regardless of emotion type (except neutral). When recalling happy events, general AM featured more analytic thinking words than specific AM, while in recollection of fearful events, general AM featured fewer such words than specific AM. General relative to specific AM about happy experiences contained more narrative thinking words. These findings suggest that the psychological mechanisms underlying top-down and bottom-up retrieval differ between particular types of emotion engaged in AM.
Insight into psychosis is a multidimensional construct involving awareness of illness, attribution of symptoms, and perceived need for treatment. Despite extensive research, substantial variability in how insight is conceptualized and measured continues to hinder clinical assessment and cross-study comparisons.
Methods
Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Protocols guidelines and a registered International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews protocol (CRD42024558386), we conducted a systematic search across five databases (n = 2,184). Twenty-nine studies met the inclusion criteria, comprising 15 primary scale development papers and 10 independent validation studies. We included instruments explicitly designed to assess insight in schizophrenia-spectrum, and evaluated them using the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments Risk of Bias checklist. Psychometric domains assessed included content validity, structural validity, construct validity, criterion validity, internal consistency, reliability, responsiveness, and interpretability.
Results
Fifteen distinct insight scales were identified, comprising nine clinician-rated instruments, five self-report tools, and one hybrid format. Most demonstrated adequate content and structural validity, with 11 achieving ‘very good’ reliability ratings. Four scales showed the strongest overall psychometric support. However, responsiveness to clinical change was rarely tested, and cross-cultural validation remained limited. Earlier instruments primarily emphasized clinician-rated illness awareness, whereas more recent tools incorporated cognitive, neurocognitive, and subjective dimensions. Discrepancies between self-report and clinician ratings were common and often clinically meaningful. These findings underscore the need for multidimensional, psychometrically robust, and context-sensitive tools to advance both clinical assessment and research on insight in psychotic disorders.

Managing cognitive load is central to designing interactive systems, particularly within augmented reality (AR) environments that impose complex and immersive demands. This study investigates two complementary approaches in parts to managing cognitive load in AR: refining interaction modalities and integrating adaptive physiological feedback. In Part 1, eye-tracking and hand-based modalities are evaluated across tasks of varying difficulty, using skin conductance responses (SCRs) as a proxy for cognitive load. Results show that while hand gestures improved task performance in simple tasks, cognitive load levels are comparable across modalities. In Part 2, an adaptive feedback system based on a signal-derived metric, cumulative SCR (CSCR), is developed to trigger short rest interventions during sustained cognitive load. Statistical analyses illustrate that rest interventions significantly reduced cumulative cognitive load, though their effect on task performance was inconclusive. These findings emphasize the trade-offs between cognitive relief and performance continuity and highlight the potential of physiologically adaptive systems in supporting cognitive-aware interaction design.
High-sensitivity observations of PSR J1919+1745 were conducted using the Five-hundred-metre Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST) at a central frequency of 1 250 MHz, enabling a detailed investigation of its single-pulse behaviour. Our research indicates that this pulsar is a normal pulsar, exhibiting null behaviour, subpulse drifting, and occasional bright pulses. Moreover, we observed that the null events tend to be of short duration, with an estimated overall null fraction of approximately $29.5\pm1.1\% $. Through Sliding Fluctuation Spectrum analysis, the modulation period of subpulse drifting is determined to be $P_3=(6.1 \pm 0.7)P_1$ (where $P_1$ denotes the pulsar rotation period), and a non-drifting behaviour is also observed besides this. Analysis using the Harmonic-Resolved Fourier Spectrum indicates that a combination of amplitude modulation and phase modulation causes the subpulse drifting behaviour of this pulsar. Furthermore, the value $P_2$, derived from phase modulation, is approximately $360^\circ / 21 = 17.1^\circ$. polarisation analysis shows a moderate degree of linear polarisation ($37.22\pm0.59\% $), an S-shaped swing in the polarisation position angle, and an approximate $90^\circ$ orthogonal polarisation jump. The radiation characteristics of PSR J1919+1745 will expand the sample of pulsars with pulse null and subpulse drifting, thus contributing to future systematic studies on the physical origins of pulse null and subpulse drifting phenomena.
During the forty-thousand-mile voyage of HMS Beagle (1831–6) Charles Darwin compiled an extensive corpus of manuscript materials, containing a highly specialized chromatic vocabulary. Darwin’s dedicated use of binomial colour terms, such as ‘aurora red’, ‘orpiment orange’ and ‘gamboge yellow’, was the result of his regular consultation of a work popular among British naturalists: Werner’s Nomenclature of Colours (1821) by Patrick Syme. A copy of this compact colour manual was among Darwin’s ‘most useful’ possessions on the Beagle. Now held in Cambridge University Library (DAR LIB T.620), Darwin’s copy of Syme’s book evidences both the difficulties of capturing accurate colour in exploratory natural history and the mechanisms by which this was attempted. Mining the Beagle archive for representations of coloured phenomena, this article reveals for the first time the extent of Darwin’s reliance on Werner’s Nomenclature for collecting and communicating chromatic data, across distance and against the fugitive, subjective and shifting nature of natural hues.
The guided-jet waves (GJWs) that may be trapped into a jet are investigated by simulating the propagation of the waves generated by an acoustic source on the axis of a jet at a Mach number of 0.95. The flow is modelled as a cylindrical shear layer to avoid reflections in the axial direction. For the source frequencies considered, GJWs belonging to the first two radial GJW axisymmetric modes are observed. They propagate in the upstream or downstream directions, and are entirely or partially contained in the flow, depending on the frequency. Their amplitudes are quantified. In the frequency–wavenumber space, they lie along the GJW dispersion curves predicted using linear-stability analysis. At specific spatial locations, they vary strongly and sharply with the frequency, exhibiting tonal-like peaks near the frequencies of the stationary points in the dispersion curves where the GJWs are standing waves with zero group velocity. Given the flow configuration, these properties can be attributed to propagation effects not requiring axial resonance between upstream- and downstream-travelling waves. Finally, it can be noted that, upstream of the source, outside the jet, the GJW amplitudes fluctuate in a reverse sawtooth manner with very intense peaks up to 30 dB higher than the levels obtained without flow at 10 jet radii from the source, similarly to the GJW footprints in the near-nozzle spectra of high-subsonic jets.
The 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) is a genetic disorder characterised by defined microdeletions at chromosome 22q11.2. These genetic changes lead to a variety of neurodevelopmental problems, including cognitive delays and a very high rate of symptoms on the autism and schizophrenia spectrum. The underlying mechanisms contributing to these neurodevelopmental manifestations remain poorly understood. In concert with these neurodevelopmental difficulties there are also immune system alterations, including autoimmunity. We hypothesise that immune dysfunction and the presence of circulating autoantibodies may play a role in the pathophysiology of these neuropsychiatric symptoms. In this review, we synthesise the diverse literature on autoantibodies in 22q11DS and propose mechanisms for a causative role of these autoantibodies in neurobehavioural problems such as psychosis and cognitive delays. This review highlights the importance of further research to explore the interaction between autoreactive antibodies and functional alterations in neurocircuitry function. Understanding this relationship may provide insight into the origins of psychiatric symptoms.
An outbreak of emm92/ST82 Streptococcus pyogenes was detected through prospective genomic surveillance at a military treatment facility. Twenty-one of twenty-six patients had confirmed epidemiological links to grappling sports. One case resulted from household transmission. The benefits of routine surveillance extend beyond the hospital environment enabling the detection of community-driven transmission.
This article deals with the tuberculosis policy in Communist Bulgaria from the 1940s to the end of the 1950s. The focus is on the BCG vaccination as the major preventive tool. The article’s reconstruction of decision-making draws on evidence from archive records produced by the Bulgarian Ministry of Health. The main question guiding the research is how past Bulgarian experiences on the one hand, and international traditions, on the other, influence medical opinion and state policy towards tuberculosis and patients with tuberculosis. How did the Cold War context shape BCG vaccination policy? The author presents the story of the ‘Bulgarian’ BCG strain, which was made possible by the international research networks and travels of the Bulgarian scientist Srebra Rodopska (1913–2006). Her story has recently been rediscovered and made popular in Bulgaria, in the context of debates about COVID-19. This article aims to correct the public history narrative, which has thus emerged by placing the story of the BCG vaccine within its Cold War context. The author pays attention to dependencies between medicine and politics, and to the role of the state. Despite the popular story of Rodopska as the inventor of a ‘Bulgarian’ BCG strain and vaccine, what actually happened was that in Bulgaria of the 1950s and 1960s, the Soviet strain and vaccine production technique were used. This was also due to Soviet pressure to follow the Soviet model of public health infrastructure.
The growth of wall-mounted ice within channel flow which leads to a constriction is of significant practical relevance, especially in applications relating to aero-icing, large-scale pipe networks and mechanical systems. Whilst earlier works have treated ice constrictions as independent of the oncoming flow, few models explicitly account for the two-way coupling between the thermal and dynamical properties of the fluid and the evolving ice. To this end, the present work seeks to describe the interaction between high-Reynolds-number channel flow and constricting ice boundaries governed by Stefan conditions. Numerical simulations of the model indeed reveal that ice forming on the channel walls grows inwards towards the centreline and subsequently creates almost total constriction. In other parameter regimes, however, there is no ice formation. Using both a numerical and asymptotic approach, we identify regions of parameter space in which ice formation, and subsequently flow constriction, does or does not occur.
