While global financial capital is abundant, it flows into corporate investments and real estate rather than climate change actions in cities. Political will and public pressure are crucial to redirecting funds. Studies of economic impacts underestimate the costs of climate disasters, especially in cities, so they undermine political commitments while understating potential climate-related returns. The shift of corporate approaches towards incorporating environmental, social, and governance (ESG) impacts offers promise for private-sector climate investments but are recently contested. Institutional barriers remain at all levels, particularly in African cities. Since the Global North controls the world's financial markets, new means of increasing funding for the Global South are needed, especially for adaptation. Innovative financial instruments and targeted use of environmental insurance tools can upgrade underdeveloped markets and align urban climate finance with ESG frameworks. These approaches, however, require climate impact data collection, programs to improve cities' and countries' creditworthiness, and trainings. Our exploration of Mars has revealed a world as fascinating as Earth, with a changing climate, giant volcanoes, former oceans, polar ice caps, and numerous impact craters. This book provides a comprehensive summary of the morphology and distribution of meteorite craters on Mars, and the wealth of information these can provide on the crustal structure, surface geology, climate and evolution of the planet. The chapters present highly illustrated case studies of landforms associated with impact craters to highlight their morphological diversity, using high-resolution images and topographic data to compare these features with those on other bodies in the Solar System. Including research questions to inspire future work, this book will be valuable for researchers and graduate students interested in impact craters (both terrestrial and extra-terrestrial) and Mars geology, as well as planetary geologists, planetary climatologists and astrobiologists.
We present the serendipitous radio-continuum discovery of a likely Galactic supernova remnant (SNR) G305.4–2.2. This object displays a remarkable circular symmetry in shape, making it one of the most circular Galactic SNRs known. Nicknamed Teleios due to its symmetry, it was detected in the new Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) Evolutionary Map of the Universe (EMU) radio–continuum images with an angular size of 1 320$^{\prime\prime}$$\times$1 260$^{\prime\prime}$ and PA = 0$^\circ$. While there is a hint of possible H$\alpha$ and gamma-ray emission, Teleios is exclusively seen at radio–continuum frequencies. Interestingly, Teleios is not only almost perfectly symmetric, but it also has one of the lowest surface brightnesses discovered among Galactic SNRs and a steep spectral index of $\alpha$=–0.6$\pm$0.3. Our best estimates from Hi studies and the $\Sigma$–D relation place Teleios as a type Ia SNR at a distance of either $\sim$2.2 kpc (near-side) or $\sim$7.7 kpc (far-side). This indicates two possible scenarios, either a young (under 1 000 yr) or a somewhat older SNR (over 10 000 yr). With a corresponding diameter of 14/48 pc, our evolutionary studies place Teleios at the either early or late Sedov phase, depending on the distance/diameter estimate. However, our modelling also predicts X-ray emission, which we do not see in the present generation of eROSITA images. We also explored a type Iax explosion scenario that would point to a much closer distance of $\lt$1 kpc and Teleios size of only $\sim$3.3 pc, which would be similar to the only known type Iax remnant SN1181. Unfortunately, all examined scenarios have their challenges, and no definitive Supernova (SN) origin type can be established at this stage. Remarkably, Teleios has retained its symmetrical shape as it aged even to such a diameter, suggesting expansion into a rarefied and isotropic ambient medium. The low radio surface brightness and the lack of pronounced polarisation can be explained by a high level of ambient rotation measure (RM), with the largest RM being observed at Teleios’s centre.
This collection gathers thirteen contributions by a number of historians, friends, colleagues and/or students of Jinty’s, who were asked to pick their favourite article by her and say a few words about it for an event held in her memory on 15 January 2025 at King’s College London. We offer this collection in print now for a wider audience not so much because it has any claim to be exhaustive or authoritative, but because taken all together these pieces seemed to add up to a useful retrospective on Jinty’s work, its wider context, and its impact on the field over the decades. We hope that, for those who know her work well already, this may be an opportunity to remember some of her classic (and a few less classic) articles, while at the same time serving as an accessible introduction to her research for anyone who knew her without necessarily knowing about her field, as well as for a new and younger generation of readers.
Executive functioning (EF) impairments are widely known to represent transdiagnostic risk factors of psychopathology. However, a recent alternative account has been proposed, according to which EF impairments emerge as consequences of psychopathology.
Methods
Using a longitudinal cross-lagged panel network analysis approach, we tested these competing theoretical accounts at different stages during adolescence. We used data from the Brazilian High-Risk Cohort Study for the Development of Childhood Psychiatric Disorders, in which 61% of individuals at wave 1 were selected due to their high risk for psychopathology. Participants were assessed across three assessment waves during early (wave 1: n = 1,992, mean age = 10.20 years) and middle adolescence (wave 2: n = 1,633, mean age = 13.48 years; wave 3: n = 1,439, mean age = 18.20 years). We examined associations between working memory, inhibitory control, and broad-band measures of psychopathology.
Results
During early adolescence, lower inhibitory control was a risk factor for externalizing problems that, in turn, predicted lower working memory capacity. During middle adolescence, bidirectional associations became more prominent: inhibitory control and working memory functioned as both risk factors and consequences. Externalizing problems both predicted and were predicted by poor inhibitory control. Internalizing and externalizing symptoms showed bidirectional associations over time. Externalizing problems predicted more internalizing symptoms, whereas internalizing symptoms predicted fewer externalizing problems during middle adolescence.
Conclusions
Our results corroborate dynamic theories that describe executive dysfunctions as precursors and consequences of psychopathology in middle adolescence.
The Mental Health Bill, 2025, proposes to remove autism and learning disability from the scope of Section 3 of the Mental Health Act, 1983 (MHA). The present article represents a professional and carer consensus statement that raises concerns and identifies probable unintended consequences if this proposal becomes law. Our concerns relate to the lack of clear mandate for such proposals, conceptual inconsistency when considering other conditions that might give rise to a need for detention and the inconsistency in applying such changes to Part II of the MHA but not Part III. If the proposed changes become law, we anticipate that detentions would instead occur under the less safeguarded Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards framework, and that unmanaged risks will eventuate in behavioural consequences that will lead to more autistic people or those with a learning disability being sent to prison. Additionally, there is a concern that the proposed definitional breadth of autism and learning disability gives rise to a risk that people with other conditions may unintentionally be unable to be detained. We strongly urge the UK Parliament to amend this portion of the Bill prior to it becoming law.
Here, we explore variation in a new record of archaeological house-floor sizes from the southwestern United States relative to spatially explicit time series estimates of local precipitation. Our results show that inequality becomes more severe during periods of high precipitation. This supports the theory suggesting that inequality may emerge where resources are dense, predictable, and clumped within heterogenous and circumscribed environments. Our findings indicate that wealth inequality may emerge among populations with similar subsistence adaptations as a result of local socioenvironmental variation.
Knowledge of environmental triggers for migraine attacks is limited and has mostly been acquired by studies using emergency room (ER) visits. However, it is unlikely that ER visits are a random sample of migraine events, even within strata of migraine severity. Additionally, time lags between attack onset and ER visits may vary across the population, posing challenges for assessing causal links of migraine with community-level or ecologic exposures.
Objective:
Our objective was to assess the relationship between demographic and geographic measures and self-reported migraine-related ER visits.
Methods:
We analyzed a targeted non-probability survey of ER use related to migraine in Canada and the USA. The 18-question online survey addressed ER use and behaviors related to recording attacks.
Results:
The final dataset included 389 respondents (Canada = 164 [42.2%], USA = 225 [57.8%]); 51 (13.1%) were Migraine Buddy app users who shared their diaries. In both countries, participants reported similar migraine symptoms. Barriers to attending the ER included cost and wait times. There was more variability in delays between attack onset and arrival to the ER than between onset and recording in the smartphone app. Younger participants and participants living in Canada were significantly more likely to present to the ER.
Conclusion:
The sample of patients presenting to the ER for migraine may be biased toward younger patients and depend on the jurisdiction. Smartphone app records may have fewer barriers to creation and more consistent time lags compared to ER visit records.
Recent changes to US research funding are having far-reaching consequences that imperil the integrity of science and the provision of care to vulnerable populations. Resisting these changes, the BJPsych Portfolio reaffirms its commitment to publishing mental science and advancing psychiatric knowledge that improves the mental health of one and all.
Paternal perinatal mental health influences subsequent child development, yet is under-investigated. This study aims to examine the impact of different timings of paternal perinatal anxiety (prenatal-only, postnatal-only, and both pre-and postnatally) on children’s subsequent emotional and behavioral difficulties.
Method:
We used data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children and tested the prospective associations between anxiety in fathers and adverse mental health outcomes in children at 3 years, 6 months and 7 years, 7 months.
Results:
Children whose fathers were anxious in the perinatal period were at higher risk of subsequent adverse outcomes, compared to children whose fathers were not anxious perinatally. At 3 years, 6 months, the highest risk group was the one with fathers anxious prenatally-only; compared to children with non-anxious fathers, children in the prenatal-only group were significantly more likely to present mental health difficulties, measured by total problems (unadjOR = 1.82, 95%CI [1.28, 2.53]). At 7 years, 7 months, children exposed to paternal anxiety both pre- and postnatally were at higher risk of any psychiatric disorder (unadjOR = 2.35, 95%CI [1.60, 3.37]) compared to the non-anxious group.
Conclusions:
Paternal perinatal anxiety is a risk factor for child adverse outcomes, even after accounting for maternal mental health, child temperament, and sociodemographic factors, and should not be overlooked in research and clinical practice.
The paper reports the results of an articulatory 3D/4D ultrasound study showing the variation in the production of corresponding high central(ized) unrounded vowels of Polish, Russian and Ukrainian. We provide qualitative descriptions of the articulation and quantitative analyses of the vowels, compared across the three languages, and compared with the other high vowels in the respective languages. In the analysis, we focus on the position of the dorsum and the tongue root. The Russian ‘central’ vowel (transcribed often as [ɨ]) is most often realized in our sample with a back position of the dorsum and a relatively fronted tongue root position. The corresponding Polish vowel (also transcribed often as [ɨ]) shows a fronted dorsum, though it is centralized in comparison to /i/. The corresponding Ukrainian central(ized) vowels (transcribed in Pompino Marschall, Steriopolo & Żygis 2016 as [ɪ]) shows a lot of variation but the dorsum usually is more retracted than in Polish and less than in Russian. The Russian vowel /ɨ/ shows systematic grooving along the center of the tongue in the tongue root area, indicating a strong involvement of the tongue root musculature. Such a grooving is inconsistent in Ukrainian speakers and minimal in Polish. In general, we observe that functionally corresponding vowels in closely related languages may differ in articulation, which may have an impact on the phonological systems of the languages.
Mood and anxiety disorders co-occur and share symptoms, treatments and genetic risk, but it is unclear whether combining them into a single phenotype would better capture genetic variation. The contribution of common genetic variation to these disorders has been investigated using a range of measures; however, the differences in their ability to capture variation remain unclear, while the impact of rare variation is mostly unexplored.
Aims
We aimed to explore the contributions of common genetic variation and copy number variations associated with risk of psychiatric morbidity (P-CNVs) to different measures of internalising disorders.
Method
We investigated eight definitions of mood and anxiety disorder, and a combined internalising disorder, derived from self-report questionnaires, diagnostic assessments and electronic healthcare records (EHRs). Association of these definitions with polygenic risk scores (PRSs) of major depressive disorder and anxiety disorder, as well as presence of a P-CNV, was assessed.
Results
The effect sizes of both PRSs and P-CNVs were similar for mood and anxiety disorder. Compared to mood and anxiety disorder, internalising disorder resulted in higher prediction accuracy for PRSs, and increased significance of associations with P-CNVs for most definitions. Comparison across the eight definitions showed that PRSs had higher prediction accuracy and effect sizes for stricter definitions, whereas P-CNVs were more strongly associated with EHR- and self-report-based definitions.
Conclusions
Future studies may benefit from using a combined internalising disorder phenotype, and may need to consider that different phenotype definitions may be more informative depending on whether common or rare variation is studied.
In the face of increasing global crises and conflict, responding immediately to a disaster with life-saving interventions is an identified gap. Rapidly deployable, highly mobile surgical teams with prepared logistics and equipment is an identified solution to meet this need.
Objectives:
Develop a Mobile Surgical Theater (MST) that is adaptable to both sudden onset and conflict driven disasters. The MST should be immediately deployable on commercial aircraft. The team members will be trained not only on the clinical aspects but also the operational components of the MST. The MST should hold the ability to provide five major surgeries daily for the duration of response and be fully self-sufficient.
Method/Description:
Subject Matter Experts (SME’s) in Mobile Surgical and Golden Hour Surgical teams were consulted throughout development. Thorough research, testing, and development was performed on all components to ensure good function and reliability. While developing training and objectives, SMEs were also consulted to ensure optimal learning. All aspects of development and training used a collaborative, team driven approach.
Results/Outcomes:
Samaritan’s Purse currently maintains two MST units, prepositioned and ready to deploy. This includes four trained teams with future trainings planned. Samaritan’s Purse maintains logistics and supply chain to ensure readiness for rapid deployment.
Conclusion:
Samaritan’s Purse stands ready to deploy Mobile Surgical Teams into complex disaster scenarios. The rapid and nimble nature of the MST ensures delivery of quality lifesaving care into areas and timeframes previously unmet through traditional disaster response mechanisms.
