The Making of Revolutionary Feminism in El Salvador tells the stories of rural and working-class women who fought to overthrow capitalism, patriarchy, and US imperialism. Covering five decades of struggle from 1965 to 2015, Diana Carolina Sierra Becerra weaves oral histories with understudied archival sources to illustrate how women developed a revolutionary theory and practice to win liberation. A multigenerational movement of women broke with patriarchal tradition. In the 1960s and 1970s, teachers and peasant women led militant class struggle against the landed oligarchy and military dictatorships. Women took up arms in the 1980s to survive US-backed state terror and built a revolution that bridged socialism and women's liberation. In the guerrilla territories, combatants and civilians politicized reproductive labor and created democratic institutions to meet the needs of the poor. Highlighting women's agency, Sierra Becerra challenges dominant narratives of revolutionary movements as monolithic, static, and dominated by urban men.
This paper presents an experimental application of reactive control to jet installation noise based on destructive interference. The work is motivated by the success of previous studies in applying this control approach to mixing layers (Sasaki et al. Theor. 2018b Comput.FluidDyn. 32, 765–788), boundary layers (Brito et al. 2021 Exp.Fluids62, 1–13; Audiffred et al. 2023 Phys.Rev.Fluids8, 073902), flow over a backward-facing step (Martini et al. 2022 J.FluidMech. 937, A19) and, more recently, to turbulent jets (Maia et al. 2021 Phys.Rev.Fluids6, 123901; Maia et al. 2022 Phys. Rev. Fluids7, 033903; Audiffred et al. 2024b J. FluidMech. 994, A15). We exploit the fact that jet–surface interaction noise is underpinned by wavepackets that can be modelled in a linear framework and develop a linear control strategy where piezoelectric actuators situated at the edge of a scattering surface are driven in real time by sensor measurements in the near field of the jet, the objective being to reduce noise radiated in the acoustic field. The control mechanism involves imposition of an anti-dipole at the trailing edge to cancel the scattering dipole that arises due to an incident wavepacket perturbation. We explore two different control strategies: (i) the inverse feed-forward approach, where causality is imposed by truncating the control kernel, and (ii) the Wiener–Hopf approach, where causality is optimally enforced in building the control kernel. We show that the Wiener–Hopf approach has better performance than that obtained using the truncated inverse feed-forward kernel. We also explore different positions of the near-field sensors and show that control performance is better for sensors installed for streamwise positions downstream in the jet plume, where the signature of hydrodynamic wavepacket is better captured by the sensors. Broadband noise reductions of up to 50 % are achieved.
Postpartum depression is prevalent among Black women and associated with intersecting systemic factors and interpersonal discrimination. However, gaps remain in understanding pregnancy-related changes in discrimination experiences that influence postpartum mental health and could inform preventive interventions. We hypothesized that young Black women would experience increasing levels of discrimination across the transition to parenthood, heightening depression risk relative to non-pregnant peers.
Methods
Participants comprised 335 Black primiparous women (ages 17-30 at delivery) and 335 age- and discriminationmatched non-pregnant controls from the Pittsburgh Girls Study. Self-reported discrimination experiences were collected at four timepoints: two years pre-pregnancy, one year pre-pregnancy, pregnancy, and one year postpartum for the childbearing sample, with corresponding data from the non-pregnant sample across the same interval (matched pairwise).
Results
Linear increases in discrimination were observed for the nonpregnant participants (BS = .480, SE = .090, p <.001), while childbearing participants showed no overall changes, though younger age predicted greater increases over time. For childbearing participants, both baseline discrimination (BI = .626, SE = .077, p < .001) and increasing discrimination (BS = 2.55, SE = .939, p < .01) predicted postpartum depressive symptoms, controlling for pre-pregnancy depression. Among non-pregnant participants, only baseline discrimination predicted later depression (BI = .912, SE = .081, p < .001).
Conclusions
Experiencing increasing levels of interpersonal discrimination across the transition to parenthood may heighten postpartum depression risk among young Black women, indicating a need for interventions supporting well-being and promoting resilience before, during and after pregnancy.
Using the dual-pathway framework (Beach et al., 2022a), we tested a Neuro-immune Network (NIN) hypothesis: i.e., that chronically elevated inflammatory processes may have delayed (i.e., incubation) effects on young adult substance use, leading to negative health outcomes. In a sample of 449 participants in the Family and Community Health Study who were followed from age 10 to age 29, we examined a non-self-report index of young adult elevated alcohol consumption (EAC). By controlling self-reported substance use at the transition to adulthood, we were able to isolate a significant delayed (incubation) effect from childhood exposure to danger to EAC (β = −.157, p = .006), which contributed to significantly worse aging outomes. Indirect effects from danger to aging outcomes via EAC were: GrimAge (IE = .010, [.002, .024]), Cardiac Risk (IE = −.004, [−.011, −.001]), DunedinPACE (IE = .002, [.000, .008]). In exploratory analyses we examined potential sex differences in effects, showing slightly stronger incubation effects for men and slightly stronger effects of EAC on aging outcomes for women. Results support the NIN hypothesis that incubation of immune pathway effects contributes to elevated alcohol consumption in young adulthood, resulting in accelerated aging and elevated cardiac risk outcomes via health behavior.
Objectives/Goals: Mathematical models of airborne virus transmission lack supporting field and clinical data such as viral aerosol emission rates and airborne infectious doses. Here, we aim to measure inhalation exposure to influenza aerosols in a room shared with persons with community-acquired influenza and estimate the infectious dose via inhalation. Methods/Study Population: We recruited healthy volunteer recipients and influenza donors with polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-confirmed community-acquired infection. On admission to a hotel quarantine, recipients provided sera to determine baseline immunity to influenza virus, and donor infections were confirmed by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. Donors and recipients were housed in separate rooms and interacted in an “event room” with controlled ventilation (0.2 – 0.5 air changes/hour) and relative humidity (20–40%). We collected ambient bioaerosol exposure samples using NIOSH BC-251 samplers. Donors provided exhaled breath samples collected by a Gesundheit-II (G-II). We analyzed aerosol samples using dPCR and fluorescent focus assays for influenza A and sera by hemagglutinin inhibition assay (HAI) against donor viruses and vaccine strains. Results/Anticipated Results: Among two cohorts (24b and 24c), we exposed 11 recipients (mean age: 36; 55% female) to 5 donors (mean age: 21; 80% female) infected with influenza A H1N1 or H3N2. Eight G-II and two NIOSH bioaerosol samples (1–4 µm and ≥4 µm) were PCR positive. We cultured virus from one G-II sample. Based on previous literature, we hypothesized that ~50% of immunologically naïve people (HAI Discussion/Significance of Impact: We demonstrated that it is feasible to recruit donors with community-acquired influenza and expose recipients to measurable virus quantities under controlled conditions. However, baseline immunity was high among volunteers. Our work sets the stage for designing studies with increased sample sizes comprising immunologically naïve volunteers.
Objectives/Goals: Despite the acknowledgment of post-Ebola syndrome (PES), young EVD survivors have received little attention. The mechanistic drivers and long-term consequences of PES and EVD early in life are unknown. We aim to define PES presentations in pediatric EVD survivors and propose potential mechanistic factors contributing to PES in young people. Methods/Study Population: Here we focus on physical health outcomes in an ongoing cohort study assessing mental and physical health in pediatric EVD survivors (age Results/Anticipated Results: 671 participants were enrolled between 2021 and 2022 (Infected: n = 226, Affected: n = 207, and Control: n = 238). Groups were similar in sex distribution (52.7%, 54.0%, and 53.8% female, respectively) and mean age, although the Infected group was slightly older (14.6 y) than the Affected (13.5 y) and Control groups (14.1 y), a difference unlikely to be clinically significant. Notably, the EVD Infected group exhibited a higher burden of symptoms, with significant findings in cardiac, MSK, ophthalmologic, and “ear, nose, and throat” systems. Principal component analysis showed differential patterns of sequelae across the groups, primarily defined by MSK. Discussion/Significance of Impact: PES is heterogeneous in pediatric EVD survivors. EVD Affected children exhibit a similar yet distinct pattern of clinical sequelae indicating ecological factors impact sequelae and raising questions about the mechanistic drivers of PES in children. Potential mechanisms include inflammation or accelerated aging and immune dysfunction.
Body mass is an important facet of reconstructing the paleobiology of fossil species and has, historically, been estimated from individual skeletal measurements. This paper demonstrates the potential advantages of estimating body mass using 3D geometric morphometrics on limb bones, which allows size to be explicitly contextualized within the functional morphology of the animal. Geometric morphometrics of the humerus and femur is used to estimate body mass in domestic dogs and wild canids, and the resulting estimates are compared with estimates made using limb bone dimensions and centroid size. In both groups, 3D methods produced more accurate estimates of body mass than linear dimensions. Additionally, centroid size was a poor predictor of body mass and should not be preferred over linear measurements. The use of 3D methods also reveals specific aspects of shape that are associated with different sizes. In general, relatively heavier individuals were associated with more robust bones and wider articulation sites, as well as larger attachment sites for muscles related to flexion and extension of the shoulder and hip joints. The body-mass equations constructed based on dogs were further evaluated on wild canids, as a test of their potential efficacy on fossil canids. With some adjustments, the body-mass estimation equations made for domestic dogs were able to reliably predict the mass of wild canids. These equations were then used to estimate body mass for a selection of fossil canids: Canis latrans, 16 kg; Aenocyon dirus, 67 kg; Phlaocyon multicuspus, 8 kg; and Hesperocyon gregarius, 2.5 kg.
The Liebau effect generates a net flow without the need for valves. For the Liebau effect pumping phenomenon to occur, the pump must have specific characteristics. It needs tubes with different elastic properties and an actuator to provide energy to the fluid. The actuator periodically compresses the more flexible element. Furthermore, asymmetry is a crucial factor that differentiates between two pumping mechanisms: impedance pumping and asymmetric pumping. In this work, a model based on the fluid dynamics of an asymmetric valveless pump under resonant conditions is proposed to determine which parameters influence the pumped flow rate. Experimental work is used to validate the model, after which each of the parameters involved in the pump performance is dimensionlessly analysed. This highlights the most significant parameters influencing the pump performance such as the actuator period, length tube ratio and tube diameters. The results point out ways to increase a valveless asymmetric pump’s net-propelled flow rate, which has exciting applications in fields such as biomedicine. The model also allows for predicting the resonance period, a fundamental operating parameter for asymmetric pumping.
This study investigated the neural mechanisms underlying bilingual speech perception of competing phonological representations. A total of 57 participants were recruited, consisting of 30 English monolinguals and 27 Spanish-English bilinguals. Participants passively listened to stop consonants while watching movies in English and Spanish. Event-Related Potentials and sLORETA were used to measure and localize brain activity. Comparisons within bilinguals across language contexts examined whether language control mechanisms were activated, while comparisons between groups assessed differences in brain activation. The results showed that bilinguals exhibited stronger activation in the left frontal areas during the English context, indicating greater engagement of executive control mechanisms. Distinct activation patterns were found between bilinguals and monolinguals, suggesting that the Executive Control Network provides the flexibility to manage overlapping phonological representations. These findings offer insights into the cognitive and neural basis of bilingual language control and expand current models of second language acquisition.
The success of clinical research studies depends on effective recruitment and retention of study participants, yet only a small fraction of patients engage in research studies, even in academic health systems. Increasing awareness of research opportunities and facilitating connections with clinical research study teams would help to improve the success of research programs. In this Special Communications, we describe the creation and evolution of and tools used for the My Research Partners Concierge Service (MRPcs) of an academic health system. The MRPcs provides a centralized point of contact or hub for patients and community members, as well as clinical research organizations and academic partners, who have research-related questions or interests. The MRPcs helps to connect the users of the service with relevant research study teams, personnel, or resources to facilitate their engagement in a clinical research program. Our experience with the MRPcs informs our recommendation that peer institutions organize similar research service hubs for their clinical research programs to help increase awareness of and participation in clinical research by the public and to help increase the success of research programs at fulfilling their ultimate goal of improving the health of their population.
This article explores Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz’s (1648–1695) strategic poetic approach, aimed at democratizing writing and knowledge among women during her period. It examines her engagement with the literary academy, Casa del Placer, believed to have included nuns from Portuguese convents and women of the nobility. Specifically, the study analyzes Sor Juana’s final poetic work, the Enigmas ofrecidos a la Casa del Placer (1695), comprising twenty unanswerable poetic enigmas. In this collection, Sor Juana departs from individual lyric expression, a shift I call a “poetics of dedication,” advocating for a communal cultural identity centered on her persona’s fame. Through this gesture, Sor Juana appropriates and challenges patriarchal narratives that labeled her as a “monster” due to her perceived exceptionalism. My article shows how, toward the end of her life, Sor Juana embraces and subverts discussions about her exceptional status and transatlantic identity, fostering a sense of transoceanic sorority among women writers of the colonial period.
Clinical translational neuroscience (CTN) is positioned to generate novel discoveries for advancing treatments for mental health disorders, but it is held back today by the siloing of bioethical considerations from critical consciousness. In this article, we suggest that bioethical and critical consciousness can be paired to intersect with structures of power within which science and clinical practice are conducted. We examine barriers to the adoption of neuroscience findings in mental health from this perspective, especially in the context of current collective attention to widespread disparities in the access to and outcomes of mental health services, lack of representation of marginalized populations in the relevant sectors of the workforce, and the importance of knowledge that draws upon multicultural perspectives. We provide 10 actionable solutions to confront these barriers in CTN research, as informed by existing frameworks such as structural competency, adaptive calibration models, and community-based participatory research. By integrating critical consciousness with bioethical considerations, we believe that practitioners will be better positioned to benefit from cutting-edge research in the biological and social sciences than in the past, alert to biases and equipped to mitigate them, and poised to shepherd in a robust generation of future translational therapies and practitioners.
Research participants” feedback about their participation experiences offers critical insights for improving programs. A shared Empowering the Participant Voice (EPV) infrastructure enabled a multiorganization collaborative to collect, analyze, and act on participants’ feedback using validated participant-centered measures.
Methods:
A consortium of academic research organizations with Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) programs administered the Research Participant Perception Survey (RPPS) to active or recent research participants. Local response data also aggregated into a Consortium database, facilitating analysis of feedback overall and for subgroups.
Results:
From February 2022 to June 2024, participating organizations sent surveys to 28,096 participants and received 5045 responses (18%). Respondents were 60% female, 80% White, 13% Black, 2% Asian, and 6% Latino/x. Most respondents (85–95%) felt respected and listened to by study staff; 68% gave their overall experience the top rating. Only 60% felt fully prepared by the consent process. Consent, feeling valued, language assistance, age, study demands, and other factors were significantly associated with overall experience ratings. 63% of participants said that receiving a summary of the study results would be very important to joining a future study. Intersite scores differed significantly for some measures; initiatives piloted in response to local findings raised experience scores.
Conclusion:
RPPS results from 5045 participants from seven CTSAs provide a valuable evidence base for evaluating participants’ research experiences and using participant feedback to improve research programs. Analyses revealed opportunities for improving research practices. Sites piloting local change initiatives based on RPPS findings demonstrated measurable positive impact.
In the current paper, we review existing tools for solving variable selection problems in psychology. Modern regularization methods such as lasso regression have recently been introduced in the field and are incorporated into popular methodologies, such as network analysis. However, several recognized limitations of lasso regularization may limit its suitability for psychological research. In this paper, we compare the properties of lasso approaches used for variable selection to Bayesian variable selection approaches. In particular we highlight advantages of stochastic search variable selection (SSVS), that make it well suited for variable selection applications in psychology. We demonstrate these advantages and contrast SSVS with lasso type penalization in an application to predict depression symptoms in a large sample and an accompanying simulation study. We investigate the effects of sample size, effect size, and patterns of correlation among predictors on rates of correct and false inclusion and bias in the estimates. SSVS as investigated here is reasonably computationally efficient and powerful to detect moderate effects in small sample sizes (or small effects in moderate sample sizes), while protecting against false inclusion and without over-penalizing true effects. We recommend SSVS as a flexible framework that is well-suited for the field, discuss limitations, and suggest directions for future development.
The process of questionnaire design has been done intuitively by investigators for decades despite a large literature being available to guide the process to yield maximally reliable and valid measurement tools. This chapter offers two conceptual frameworks involving (1) the cognitive processes involved in answering questions optimally, and (2) conversational conventions that govern everyday communication. We use these frameworks to explain a range of empirical evidence documenting the impact of question manipulations on responses. Topics covered include open vs. closed questions, rating vs. ranking, rating scale length and scale point labels, acquiescence response bias, multiple select questions, response order effects, treatment of non-substantive response options, social desirability response bias, question wording and order, questionnaire length, and considerations for internet surveys. In all, we provide a set of best practices that should be useful to all researchers.
Introduction and Objectives: Although new complementary tests have emerged for the diagnosis of cognitive impairment and dementia, due to their high costs and limited availability, it is crucial to find low-cost, simple, and quick tools during the clinical examination that allow the physician to correctly diagnose these diseases. The study aims to evaluate the predictive value of mentioning the year 1900 during temporal orientation in patients presenting with cognitive disorders. No similar studies to the one proposed have beenreported.
Materials and Methods: A prospective cross-sectional observational study was conducted on patients who underwent cognitive evaluation between April and October 2019 and were being followed up in a cognitive neurology service. Within the administration of the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) by Folstein, the reported year during temporal orientation was recorded, considering it positive if the response was between 1900 and 1999. The presence of dementia was determined according to the NIA-AA clinical criteria. Epi Info 7.2.1 was used for statistical analysis.
Results: A total of 192 patients with a mean age of 68.5 ± 13.97 years were included (65.10% women and 34.90% men). 20.31% had dementia (51.28% non-Alzheimer’s dementia and 48.72% Alzheimer’s-type dementia), while 79.69% had other diagnoses (73.6% non-amnestic mild cognitive impairment, 8% subjective complaint, 4% psychiatric disease, 14.4% amnestic mild cognitive impairment). Mentioning the 1900s had a specificity of 95% and a sensitivity of 58% for diagnosing Alzheimer’s-type dementia versus other dementia types (positive and negative predictive values of 92% and 70% respectively). A positive response in the 1900s was associated with a lower MMSE score (Mean 20.5 SD 5.38 vs. Mean 27.1 SD 3.19 in patients with a negative response (p < 0.0001). Additionally, patients without a 1900s response had a higher number of years of education 14.03 SD 4.2 vs. 10 SD 5.3 (p 0.0001).
Conclusions: While this is a preliminary result and a larger sample would be needed, thinking you are in the 1900s seems to be a good dementia indicator, although it remains to be determined if it could be specific to a particular type.
Objectives: Various studies described the psychological impact of the mandatory preventive social isolation (lockdown) caused by COVID-19 across different age groups. However, no research had specifically analyzed the effects of lockdown on the cognitive performance of older adults with preexisting cognitive decline. This study aimed to determine the impact of lockdown on the cognitive functions of individuals with cognitive decline.
Methods: Argentina was one of the countries with the longest lockdown periods. Older adults in Argentina experienced extended lockdowns lasting several months, significantly limiting their social interactions and routine activities. Cognitive reevaluations were conducted on 16 patients who had attended a memory clinic with cognitive complaints and were evaluated before the lockdown (group 1). Their progression was compared with 16 patients evaluated and reevaluated over a similar period but without undergoing a lockdown (group 2). To compared the progression of both groups a “change index” (CI) were calculated for each test ((score assessment 1 – score assessment 2)/number of months between assessment 1 and assessment 2))
Results: Patient from group 1 and 2 were paired by age (M group 1 = 77.2, DS group 1 = 6.2, M group2 = 77.3 DS group2 = 6.6, p=.98), yearsof education (M group 1 = 13.6, DS group 1 = 2.8, M group2 = 13.9 DS group2 = 3.0, p=.81), Beck depression inventory score (M group 1 = 12.2, DS group 1 = 7.2, M group2 = 13.9 DS group2 = 7.4, p = .54) and Addenbrooke’s Cognitive Examination (ACE. M group 1 = 76.2, DS group 1 = 14.4, M group2 = 76.0 DS group2 = 20.7, p = .97) score at the first assessment. Group 1 showed a significant and greater increased of false positive than group 2 in Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test recognition (M CIgroup 1 = –.31, DS CIgroup 1 = .38, M CIgroup 2 = –.1, DS CIgroup 2 = .44, p < .05). Results indicated that patients who experienced the lockdown exhibited a greater cognitive decline compared to the control group.
Conclusions: The findings suggest that the lockdown accelerated cognitive deterioration in individuals with memory complaints.
Introduction and Objectives: The affected functional domains in patients with degenerative dementias serve as clues to trace with varying levels of certainty the underlying neuropathology (1) and the negative impact on their autonomy reveals part of the clinical diagnosis of the disease. Healthcare professionals often rely on tools that measure this functionality, allowing them to distinguish between mild cognitive impairment and actual dementia (FAQ (2), CDR(3)).
According to the science fiction author Philip K. Dick, Kipple is a useless object like advertising cards, matchboxes after the last match has been used, yesterday’s newspaper wrapper, etc. Considering that the deterioration in the autonomy of dementia patients negatively impacts their connection with the environment, it is expected that the kipple around them will be few. The aim of this work is to create a low-cost, simple, and quick tool that allows the physician to measure the negative impact of the patient’s cognitive failures on their functionality.
