Methamphetamine (METH) dependence is a globally significant public health concern with no efficacious treatment. Trait impulsivity is associated with the initiation, maintenance, and recurrence of substance abuse. However, the presence of these associations in METH addiction, as well as the underlying neurobiological mechanisms, remains incompletely understood.
Methods
We scanned 110 individuals with METH use disorder (MUDs) and 55 matched healthy controls (HCs) using T1-weighted imaging and assessed their drug use characteristics and trait impulsivity. Surface-based morphometry and graph theoretical analysis were used to investigate group differences in brain morphometry and network attributes. Partial correlations were conducted to investigate the relationships between brain morphometric changes, drug use parameters, and trait impulsivity. Mediation analyses examined how trait impulsivity and drug craving influenced the link between brain morphometric change and MUD severity in patients.
Results
MUDs exhibited thinner thickness in the left fusiform gyrus and right pars opercularis, as well as diminished small-world properties in their structural covariance networks (SCNs) compared to HCs. Furthermore, reduced cortical thickness in the right pars opercularis was linked to motor impulsivity (MI) and MUD severity, and the association between the right pars opercularis thickness and MUD severity was significantly mediated by both MI and cue-induced craving.
Conclusions
These findings suggest that MUDs exhibit distinct brain structural abnormalities in both the cortical thickness and SCNs and highlight the critical role of impulse control in METH addiction. This insight may offer a potential neurobiological target for developing therapeutic interventions to treat addiction and prevent relapse.
While there is evidence that childhood maltreatment (CM) is positively associated with drug use (DU), the strength and difference of the association between CM and its subtypes (hereafter CM + ST) and DU remains to be further explored. A multilevel meta-analysis was conducted on 101 independent studies reporting 333 effect sizes (N = 132,341; Mage = 24.65; 43.80%males). Results showed significantly positive correlations between CM + ST and DU (range from 0.109 to 0.185). The results of the subgroup analysis revealed notable disparities in the correlations between distinct CM subtypes and DU (F = 5.358, P<0.01). Specifically, the effect size for childhood sexual abuse (CSA) was significantly lower than childhood emotional maltreatment (CEM) and childhood physical maltreatment (CPM), while no significant difference was noted between the CEM and CPM groups. These effect sizes also varied across regions, drug types, gender, detection rate of CM, the presence or absence of alcohol in substances, publication status and measurement method. The significant yet differing correlations between different subtypes of CM and DU to some extent support the principle of equality in psychopathology. These findings help explain the relationship between CM + ST and DU laying the groundwork for further research into the intricate and complex associations between CM and DU.
The relationship between emotional symptoms and cognitive impairments in major depressive disorder (MDD) is key to understanding cognitive dysfunction and optimizing recovery strategies. This study investigates the relationship between subjective and objective cognitive functions and emotional symptoms in MDD and evaluates their contributions to social functioning recovery.
Methods
The Prospective Cohort Study of Depression in China (PROUD) involved 1,376 MDD patients, who underwent 8 weeks of antidepressant monotherapy with assessments at baseline, week 8, and week 52. Measures included the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD-17), Quick Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology-Self Report (QIDS-SR16), Chinese Brief Cognitive Test (C-BCT), Perceived Deficits Questionnaire for Depression-5 (PDQ-D5), and Sheehan Disability Scale (SDS). Cross-lagged panel modeling (CLPM) was used to analyze temporal relationships.
Results
Depressive symptoms and cognitive measures demonstrated significant improvement over 8 weeks (p < 0.001). Baseline subjective cognitive dysfunction predicted depressive symptoms at week 8 (HAMD-17: β = 0.190, 95% CI: 0.108–0.271; QIDS-SR16: β = 0.217, 95% CI: 0.126–0.308). Meanwhile, baseline depressive symptoms (QIDS-SR16) also predicted subsequent subjective cognitive dysfunction (β = 0.090, 95% CI: 0.003-0.177). Recovery of social functioning was driven by improvements in depressive symptoms (β = 0.384, p < 0.0001) and subjective cognition (β = 0.551, p < 0.0001), with subjective cognition contributing more substantially (R2 = 0.196 vs. 0.075).
Conclusions
Subjective cognitive dysfunction is more strongly associated with depressive symptoms and plays a significant role in social functioning recovery, highlighting the need for targeted interventions addressing subjective cognitive deficits in MDD.
Major depressive disorder (MDD) tends to emerge during adolescence; however, neurobiological research in adolescents has lagged behind that in adults. This study aimed to characterize gray matter (GM) structural alterations in adolescents with MDD using comprehensive morphological analyses.
Methods
This study included 93 adolescent MDD patients and 77 healthy controls. Voxel-based morphometry (VBM), deformation-based morphometry (DBM), and surface-based morphometry (SBM) methods were used to analyze GM morphological alterations in adolescent MDD patients. Sex-by-group and age-by-group interactions, as well as the relationships between altered GM structure and clinical characteristics were also analyzed.
Results
Whole-brain VBM and DBM analyses revealed GM atrophy in the left thalamus and bilateral midbrain in adolescent MDD patients. Whole-brain SBM analysis revealed that adolescent MDD patients, relative to controls, showed decreased thickness in the left postcentral gyrus and left precentral gyrus; increased thickness in the bilateral superior temporal gyrus, left parahippocampal gyrus and right lateral orbitofrontal gyrus; and decreased fractal dimension in the right lateral occipital gyrus. A significant sex-by-group interaction effect was found in the fractal dimension of the left lateral occipital gyrus. The volume of the left thalamus and the thickness of the left superior temporal gyrus were correlated with the duration of disease in adolescent MDD patients.
Conclusions
This study suggested that adolescent MDD had GM morphological abnormalities in the frontal-limbic, subcortical, perceptual network and midbrain regions, with some morphological abnormalities associated with disease duration and sex differences. These findings provide new insight into the neuroanatomical substrates underlying adolescent MDD.
Bombyx mori Tryptophanyl-tRNA synthetase (BmWARS) belongs to the family of Ic-like aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (aaRSs), whose specific recognition of the substrate Trp, tRNA, maintains the fidelity of protein synthesis. In this study, BmWARS was cloned and characterized from the midgut of the silkworm, Bombyx mori, resulting in an open reading frame (ORF) with a full length of 1,149 bp, which can encode 382 Aa. BmWARS is localized in the cytoplasm, and is expressed in all tissues of the silkworm, with higher expression in the testis, ovary, silk gland and malpighian tubule. The expression of BmWARS was significantly up-regulated in the midgut and silk gland after infection with Bombyx mori nuclear polyhedrosis virus (BmNPV). In addition, overexpression of BmWARS inhibited BmNPV infection and replication extremely significantly, while interference with BmWARS expression promoted BmNPV infection and replication. Analysis of the immune pathways in which BmWARS may be involved revealed that the expression of the key genes of the PI3K-Akt pathway, BmPI3K, BmAkt, BmPDK1, BmeIF4E, BmS6, and p-Akt protein was significantly reduced, whereas the expression of BmPTEN, BmFoxO, and BmCaspase9 was significantly increased in the cells that overexpressed BmWARS and were infected with BmNPV. Meanwhile, the results of the study interfering with the expression of BmWARS were completely opposite to those of the study overexpressing BmWARS. This is the first report that BmWARS has antiviral effects in Bombyx mori. Moreover, BmWARS inhibits BmNPV infection and replication in Bombyx mori cells by promoting apoptosis and inhibiting cell proliferation.
Acoustic resonances in cascade structures may cause structural damage and instability problems in aero-engines and other industrial plants; thus, developing corresponding prediction methods is important. However, works published in the open literature mostly focus on the special case of the stationary Parker modes and provide little knowledge into the rotating resonances in annular cascades, especially in the presence of non-zero background mean flows. This paper develops a three-dimensional semi-analytic model to study the acoustic resonances in an annular cascade in the presence of axial mean flow. The model applies an unsteady cascade response based on the three-dimensional lifting surface method to construct a matrix equation. Characteristic frequencies are solved in the complex domain by numerically searching for singular points. Both the oscillation frequency and the growth rate of the three-dimensional resonance modes are theoretically calculated for the first time under non-zero mean flow conditions. The results reveal an organised distribution with varying inter-blade phase angle and show obvious change with the background flow speed. It is found that the unsteady vortex shedding from the trailing edges of the cascade is a key factor influencing the dissipation rate of the resonance modes. In addition, the important effects of acoustic scattering by the cascade during resonances are examined, which qualitatively corroborate some previous experimental observations.
Based on a 4f system, a 0° reflector and a single laser diode side-pump amplifier, a new amplifier is designed to compensate the spherical aberration of the amplified laser generated by a single laser diode side-pump amplifier and enhance the power of the amplified laser. Furthermore, the role of the 4f system in the passive spherical aberration compensation and its effect on the amplified laser are discussed in detail. The results indicate that the amplification efficiency is enhanced by incorporating a 4f system in a double-pass amplifier and placing a 0° reflector only at the focal point of the single-pass amplified laser. This method also effectively uses the heat from the gain medium (neodymium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet) of the amplifier to compensate the spherical aberration of the amplified laser.
Suicidal ideation (SI) is very common in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). However, its neural mechanisms remain unclear. The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) region may be associated with SI in MDD patients. This study aimed to elucidate the neural mechanisms of SI in MDD patients by analyzing changes in gray matter volume (GMV) in brain structures in the ACC region, which has not been adequately studied to date.
Methods
According to the REST-meta-MDD project, this study subjects consisted of 235 healthy controls and 246 MDD patients, including 123 MDD patients with and 123 without SI, and their structural magnetic resonance imaging data were analyzed. The 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD) was used to assess depressive symptoms. Correlation analysis and logistic regression analysis were used to determine whether there was a correlation between GMV of ACC and SI in MDD patients.
Results
MDD patients with SI had higher HAMD scores and greater GMV in bilateral ACC compared to MDD patients without SI (all p < 0.001). GMV of bilateral ACC was positively correlated with SI in MDD patients and entered the regression equation in the subsequent logistic regression analysis.
Conclusions
Our findings suggest that GMV of ACC may be associated with SI in patients with MDD and is a sensitive biomarker of SI.
This study aims to investigate the effects of the vine of Lonicera japonica Thunb (VLT) and marine-derived Bacillus amyloliquefaciens-9 (BA-9) supplementation on the growth performance, antioxidant capacity, and gut microbiota of goat kids. A total of 32 4-week-old kids were randomly assigned into four groups: a control group (CON), a group supplemented with 0.3% BA-9 (BA-9), a group supplemented with 2% VLT (VLT), and a group supplemented with both 0.3% BA-9 and 2% VLT (MIX). The results indicated that VLT supplementation significantly increased both average daily (P < 0.001) and total weight gain (TWG) (P < 0.001), while BA-9 alone had no significant effect (P > 0.05) on the average daily and TWG. Biomarker analysis of oxidative stress revealed that supplementation of VLT or BA-9 alone enhanced antioxidant capacity. The MIX group showing a higher total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) compared with the CON, VLT, and BA-9 groups (P < 0.05). Plasma albumin (ALB) levels were significantly increased in the both VLT and BA-9 groups. Microbiota analysis revealed significant differences in α-diversity and β-diversity between the MIX and CON groups, with specific genera such as Prevotellaceae_UCG.004 and Rikenellaceae_RC9_gut_group negatively correlated with average daily gain (ADG), while Alistipes was positively correlated with T-AOC. These findings suggest that the combined supplementation of VLT and BA-9 can significantly enhance growth performance and antioxidant capacity in goat kids by modulating the composition of gut microbiota and reducing oxidative stress.
Despite growing awareness of the mental health damage caused by air pollution, the epidemiologic evidence on impact of air pollutants on major mental disorders (MDs) remains limited. We aim to explore the impact of various air pollutants on the risk of major MD.
Methods
This prospective study analyzed data from 170 369 participants without depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia at baseline. The concentrations of particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter ≤ 2.5 μm (PM2.5), particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter > 2.5 μm, and ≤ 10 μm (PM2.5–10), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and nitric oxide (NO) were estimated using land-use regression models. The association between air pollutants and incident MD was investigated by Cox proportional hazard model.
Results
During a median follow-up of 10.6 years, 9 004 participants developed MD. Exposure to air pollution in the highest quartile significantly increased the risk of MD compared with the lowest quartile: PM2.5 (hazard ratio [HR]: 1.16, 95% CI: 1.09–1.23), NO2 (HR: 1.12, 95% CI: 1.05–1.19), and NO (HR: 1.10, 95% CI: 1.03–1.17). Subgroup analysis showed that participants with lower income were more likely to experience MD when exposed to air pollution. We also observed joint effects of socioeconomic status or genetic risk with air pollution on the MD risk. For instance, the HR of individuals with the highest genetic risk and highest quartiles of PM2.5 was 1.63 (95% CI: 1.46–1.81) compared to those with the lowest genetic risk and lowest quartiles of PM2.5.
Conclusions
Our findings highlight the importance of air pollution control in alleviating the burden of MD.
Prior research on status has focused primarily on the cognitive perspective, exploring the effects of status and offering a limited understanding of the impact of positive status change and its emotional mechanisms. This study draws upon the two-facet model of pride to examine how positive status change influences the behaviors of new status holders. Specifically, we propose that when status differentiation is low, positive status change enhances new status holders' prosocial behavior through their authentic pride, while in cases of high status differentiation, it increases their self-interested behavior through their hubristic pride. To test our hypotheses, we conducted a series of studies, including a laboratory experiment, a scenario experiment, and a time-lagged multilevel and multisource field study. Our multilevel analyses of the data provided strong support for our hypotheses. Our findings shed light on when and why positive status change triggers different behaviors among new status holders, offering important insights into the emotional mechanisms that underlie the effects of status change.
This study examined the sour grapes/sweet lemons rationalization through 2 conditions: ‘attainable’ (sweet lemons) and ‘unattainable’ (sour grapes), reflecting China’s 2019-nCoV vaccination strategy. The aim was to find ways to change people’s beliefs and preferences regarding vaccines by easing their safety concerns and encouraging more willingness to get vaccinated. An online survey was conducted from January 22 to 27, 2021, with 3,123 residents across 30 provinces and municipalities in the Chinese mainland. The direction of belief and preference changed in line with the sour grapes/sweet lemons rationalization. Using hypothetical and real contrasts, we compared those for whom the vaccine was relatively unattainable (‘sour grapes’ condition) with those who could get the vaccine easily (‘sweet lemons’). Whether the vaccine was attainable was determined in the early stage of the vaccine roll-out by membership in a select group of workers that was supposed to be vaccinated to the greatest extent possible, or, by being in the second stage when the vaccine was available to all. The attainable conditions demonstrated higher evaluation in vaccine safety, higher willingness to be vaccinated, and lower willingness to wait and see. Hence, we propose that the manipulation of vaccine attainability, which formed the basis of the application of sour grapes/sweet lemons rationalization, can be utilized as a means to manipulate the choice architecture to nudge individuals to ease vaccine safety concerns, reducing wait-and-see tendencies, and enhancing vaccination willingness. This approach can expedite universal vaccination and its associated benefits in future scenarios resembling the 2019-nCoV vaccine rollout.
During the investigation of parasitic pathogens of Mytilus coruscus, infection of a Perkinsus-like protozoan parasite was detected by alternative Ray's Fluid Thioglycolate Medium (ARFTM). The diameter of hypnospores or prezoosporangia was 8–27 (15.6 ± 4.0, n = 111) μm. The prevalence of the Perkinsus-like species in M. coruscus was 25 and 12.5% using ARFTM and PCR, respectively. The ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 fragments amplified by PCR assay had 100% homology to that of P. beihaiensis, suggesting that the protozoan parasite was P. beihaisensis and M. coruscus was its new host in East China Sea (ECS). Histological analysis showed the presence of trophozoites of P. beihaiensis in gill, mantle and visceral mass, and the schizonts only found in visceral mass. Perkinsus beihaiensis infection led to inflammatory reaction of hemocyte and the destruction of digestive tubules in visceral mass, which had negative effect on health of the farmed M. coruscus and it deserves more attention.
A high-energy picosecond 355 nm ultraviolet (UV) laser operating at 100 Hz was demonstrated. A 352 mJ, 69 ps, 1064 nm laser at 100 Hz was realized firstly by cascaded regenerative, laser diode end-pumped single-pass and side-pumped main amplifiers. The stimulated Raman scattering-based beam shaping technique, thermally induced birefringence compensation and 4f spatial filter-image relaying systems were used to maintain a relatively homogeneous beam intensity distribution during the amplification process. By using lithium triborate crystals for second- and third-harmonic generation (THG), a 172 mJ, approximately 56 ps, 355 nm UV laser was achieved with a THG conversion efficiency of 49%. To the best of our knowledge, it is the highest pulse energy of a picosecond 355 nm UV laser so far. The beam quality factor ${M}^2$ and pulse energy stability were ${M}_x^2$=3.92, ${M}_y^2$=3.71 and root mean square of 1.48%@3 hours. This laser system could play significant roles in applications including photoconductive switch excitation, laser drilling and laser micro-fabrication.
There is a clear demand for innovative therapeutics for bipolar disorder (BD).
Methods
We integrated the largest BD genome-wide association study (GWAS) dataset (NCase = 41 917, NControl = 371 549) with protein quantitative trait loci from brain, cerebrospinal fluid, and plasma. Using a range of integrative analyses, including Mendelian randomization (MR), Steiger filter analysis, Bayesian colocalization, and phenome-wide MR analysis, we prioritized novel drug targets for BD. Additionally, we incorporated data from the UK Biobank (NCase = 1064, NControl = 365 476) and the FinnGen study (NCase = 7006, NControl = 329 192) for robust biological validation.
Results
Through MR analysis, we found that in the brain, downregulation of DNM3, MCTP1, ABCB8 and elevation of DFNA5 and PDF were risk factors for BD. In cerebrospinal fluid, increased BD risk was associated with increased levels of FRZB, AGRP, and IL36A and decreased CTSF and LRP8. Plasma analysis revealed that decreased LMAN2L, CX3CL1, PI3, NCAM1, and TIMP4 correlated with increased BD risk, but ITIH1 did not. All these proteins passed Steiger filtering, and Bayesian colocalization confirmed that 12 proteins were colocalized with BD. Phenome-wide MR analysis revealed no significant side effects for potential drug targets, except for LRP8. External validation further underscored the concordance between the primary and validation cohorts, confirming MCTP1, DNM3, PDF, CTSF, AGRP, FRZB, LMAN2L, NCAM1, and TIMP4 are intriguing targets for BD.
Conclusions
Our study identified druggable proteins for BD, including MCTP1, DNM3, and PDF in the brain; CTSF, AGRP, and FRZB in cerebrospinal fluid; and LMAN2L, NCAM1, and TIMP4 in plasma, delineating promising avenues to development of novel therapies.
Stable separation is a crucial condition that must be met in order for combined aircraft to successfully engage in cooperative flight. In order to achieve the desired fast and controlled separation, this paper proposes a novel design for a torque-driven compliant separation mechanism. By taking into account the compliance characteristics of a sinusoidal acceleration function curve, a mechanical model for the separation mechanism is developed. By utilising the Coulomb friction law, an accurate determination of the aerodynamic load distribution under various conditions is achieved. Subsequently, the relationship between the unlocking moment and the aerodynamic load is derived based on these findings. Through the utilisation of the finite element method, a model of the separation mechanism is generated. To ensure the safety and reliability of the compliant separation mechanism, the mechanical properties of the structural materials are thoroughly analysed under the maximum aerodynamic load. Subsequently, the separation mechanism structure is constructed and subjected to testing in order to showcase the compliance characteristics. In addition, this paper conducts a simulation to analyse the impact of flight speed and angle-of-attack on the separation process. By doing so, the optimal conditions for separation are determined. The methods and findings presented in this study have the potential to contribute valuable insights to the design of combined aircraft.
Bilinguals may choose to speak a language either at their own will or in response to an external demand, but the underlying neural mechanisms in the two contexts is poorly understood. In the present study, Chinese–English bilinguals named pairs of pictures in three conditions: during forced-switch, the naming language altered between pictures 1 and 2. During non-switch, the naming language used was the same. During free-naming, either the same or different languages were used at participants' own will. While behavioural switching costs were observed during free-naming and forced-switching, neuroimaging results showed that forced language selection (i.e., forced-switch and non-switch) is associated with left-lateralized frontal activations, which have been implicated in inhibitory control. Free language selection (i.e., free-naming), however, was associated with fronto-parietal activations, which have been implicated in self-initiated behaviours. These findings offer new insights into the neural differentiation of language control in forced and free language selection contexts.
Chinese nurses working with immense stress may have issues with burnout during COVID-19 regular prevention and control. There were a few studies investigating status of burnout and associated factors among Chinese nurses. However, the relationships remained unclear.
Objectives
To investigate status and associated factors of nurses’ burnout during COVID-19 regular prevention and control.
Methods
784 nurses completed questionnaires including demographics, Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7, Patient Health Questionnaire-9, Insomnia Severity Index, Impact of Event Scale-revised, Perceived Social Support Scale, Connor–Davidson Resilience Scale, General Self-efficacy Scale and Maslach Burnout Inventory.
Results
310 (39.5%), 393 (50.1%) and 576 (73.5%) of respondents were at high risk of emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalization (DP) and reduced personal accomplishment (PA). The risk of EE, DP and reduced PA were moderate, high and high. Nurses with intermediate and senior professional rank and title and worked >40 h every week had lower scores in EE. Those worked in low-risk department reported lower scores in PA. Anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), self-efficacy and social support were influencing factors of EE and DP, while social support and resilience were associated factors of PA.
Conclusion
Chinese nurses’ burnout during COVID-19 regular prevention and control was serious. Professional rank and title, working unit, weekly working hours, anxiety, PTSD, self-efficacy, social support and resilience were associated factors of burnout.
Soft drink consumption has become a highly controversial public health issue. Given the pattern of consumption in China, sugar-sweetened beverage is the main type of soft drink consumed. Due to containing high levels of fructose, a soft drink may have a deleterious effect on handgrip strength (HGS) due to oxidative stress, inflammation and insulin resistance. However, few studies show an association between soft drink consumption and HGS in adults. We aimed to investigate the association between soft drink consumption and longitudinal changes in HGS among a Chinese adult population. A longitudinal population-based cohort study (5-year follow-up, median: 3·66 years) was conducted in Tianjin, China. A total of 11 125 participants (56·7 % men) were enrolled. HGS was measured using a handheld digital dynamometer. Soft drink consumption (mainly sugar-containing carbonated beverages) was measured at baseline using a validated FFQ. ANCOVA was used to evaluate the association between soft drink consumption and annual change in HGS or weight-adjusted HGS. After adjusting for multiple confounding factors, the least square means (95 % CI) of annual change in HGS across soft drink consumption frequencies were −0·70 (–2·49, 1·09) for rarely drinks, −0·82 (–2·62, 0·97) for < 1 cup/week and −0·86 (–2·66, 0·93) for ≥ 1 cup/week (Pfor trend < 0·05). Likewise, a similar association was observed between soft drink consumption and annual change in weight-adjusted HGS. The results indicate that higher soft drink consumption was associated with faster HGS decline in Chinese adults.
