Let $(\Omega , \mathfrak {M}, \mu )$ be a measure space. We show that if a surjective map $f: S_{L^1(\mu )} \to S_Y$ between the unit spheres of real $L^1(\mu )$ and of an arbitrary real normed space Y satisfies

then there exists a phase function $\varepsilon : S_{L^1(\mu )} \to \{-1, 1\}$ such that $\varepsilon \cdot f$ is a surjective isometry from $S_{L^1(\mu )}$ onto $S_Y$, and furthermore, this isometry can be extended to a linear isometry on the whole space $L^1(\mu )$.

Let T be a bounded linear operator on a separable Banach space that satisfies geometric properties similar to those of $\ell ^p,\, p>1$. We prove that the smallest and the largest norm of weak cluster points of all maximizing sequences for T can only take the values $0$ or $1$. The three classes of bounded linear operators emerging from the dichotomy of these extremal norm values coincide with the partition, created by considering the norm-attaining property and if the essential norm equals the norm.

We show that a normed linear space is isometrically isomorphic to an inner product space if and only if it is a strongly n-point homogeneous metric space for any (or every) $n \geqslant 3$. The counterpart for $n=2$ is the Banach–Mazur problem.

We introduce the super Alternative Daugavet property (super ADP), which lies strictly between the Daugavet property (DP) and the ADP. A Banach space X has the super ADP if for every element x in the unit sphere and every relatively weakly open subset W of the unit ball intersecting the unit sphere, there are an element $y\in W$ and a modulus one scalar θ such that $\|x+\theta y\|$ is almost two. Spaces with the DP satisfy this condition, and it implies the ADP. We first provide examples of super ADP spaces that fail the DP. We show that the norm of a super ADP space is rough, hence the space cannot be Asplund, and we also prove that the space fails the point of continuity property (particularly, the Radon–Nikodým property). In particular, we get examples of spaces with the ADP that fail the super ADP. For a better understanding of the differences between the super ADP, the DP and the ADP, we consider the localizations of these properties and prove that they behave rather differently. As a consequence, we provide characterizations of the super ADP for spaces of vector-valued continuous functions and of vector-valued integrable functions.

We investigate the notion of ideal (equivalently: filter) Schauder basis of a Banach space. We do so by providing bunch of new examples of such bases that are not the standard ones, especially within classical Banach spaces ($\ell _p$, $c_0$, and James’ space). Those examples lead to distinguishing and characterizing ideals (equivalently: filters) in terms of Schauder bases. We investigate the relationship between possibly basic sequences and ideals (equivalently: filters) on the set of natural numbers.

Let C be a convex body (i.e., a proper closed convex subset with nonempty interior) in a normed space X. We consider four moduli of local uniform rotundity for C at a given point $x\in \partial C$, that extend in a natural way the corresponding notions for the unit ball $B_X$, and we prove that they all coincide. This extends a known result of J. Daneš from 1976 concerning the particular case when $C=B_X$.

Stochastic embeddings of finite metric spaces into graph-theoretic trees have proven to be a vital tool for constructing approximation algorithms in theoretical computer science. In the present work, we build out some of the basic theory of stochastic embeddings in the infinite setting with an aim toward applications to Lipschitz free space theory. We prove that proper metric spaces stochastically embedding into $\mathbb {R}$-trees have Lipschitz free spaces isomorphic to $L^1$-spaces. We then undergo a systematic study of stochastic embeddability of Gromov hyperbolic metric spaces into $\mathbb {R}$-trees by way of stochastic embeddability of their boundaries into ultrametric spaces. The following are obtained as our main results: (1) every snowflake of a compact, finite Nagata-dimensional metric space stochastically embeds into an ultrametric space and has Lipschitz free space isomorphic to $\ell ^1$, (2) the Lipschitz free space over hyperbolic n-space is isomorphic to the Lipschitz free space over Euclidean n-space and (3) every infinite, finitely generated hyperbolic group stochastically embeds into an $\mathbb {R}$-tree, has Lipschitz free space isomorphic to $\ell ^1$, and admits a proper, uniformly Lipschitz affine action on $\ell ^1$.

In this paper, we present a characterization of strong subdifferentiability of the norm of bounded linear operators on $\ell _p$ spaces, $1\leq p<\infty $. Furthermore, we prove that the set of all bounded linear operators in ${B}(\ell _p, \ell _q)$ for which the norm of ${B}(\ell _p, \ell _q)$ is strongly subdifferentiable is dense in ${B}(\ell _p, \ell _q)$. Additionally, we present a characterization of Fréchet differentiability of the norm of bounded linear operators from $\ell _p$ to $\ell _q$, where $1 < p, q < \infty $. Applying this result, we will show that the Fréchet differentiability and the Gateaux differentiability of the norm of bounded linear operators on $\ell _p$ spaces coincide, extending a known theorem regarding the operator norm on Hilbert spaces.

We construct a reflexive Banach space $X_{\mathcal {D}}$ with an unconditional basis such that all spreading models admitted by normalized block sequences in $X_{\mathcal {D}}$ are uniformly equivalent to the unit vector basis of $\ell _1$, yet every infinite-dimensional closed subspace of $X_{\mathcal {D}}$ fails the Lebesgue property. This is a new result in a program initiated by Odell in 2002 concerning the strong separation of asymptotic properties in Banach spaces.

We introduce two new notions called the Daugavet constant and Δ-constant of a point, which measure quantitatively how far the point is from being Daugavet point and Δ-point and allow us to study Daugavet and Δ-points in Banach spaces from a quantitative viewpoint. We show that these notions can be viewed as a localized version of certain global estimations of Daugavet and diametral local diameter two properties such as Daugavet indices of thickness. As an intriguing example, we present the existence of a Banach space X in which all points on the unit sphere have positive Daugavet constants despite the Daugavet indices of thickness of X being zero. Moreover, using the Daugavet and Δ-constants of points in the unit sphere, we describe the existence of almost Daugavet and Δ-points, as well as the set of denting points of the unit ball. We also present exact values of the Daugavet and Δ-constant on several classical Banach spaces, as well as Lipschitz-free spaces. In particular, it is shown that there is a Lipschitz-free space with a Δ-point, which is the furthest away from being a Daugavet point. Finally, we provide some related stability results concerning the Daugavet and Δ-constant.

We use a special tiling for the hyperbolic d-space $\mathbb {H}^d$ for $d=2,3,4$ to construct an (almost) explicit isomorphism between the Lipschitz-free space $\mathcal {F}(\mathbb {H}^d)$ and $\mathcal {F}(P)\oplus \mathcal {F}(\mathcal {N})$, where P is a polytope in $\mathbb {R}^d$ and $\mathcal {N}$ a net in $\mathbb {H}^d$ coming from the tiling. This implies that the spaces $\mathcal {F}(\mathbb {H}^d)$ and $\mathcal {F}(\mathbb {R}^d)\oplus \mathcal {F}(\mathcal {M})$ are isomorphic for every net $\mathcal {M}$ in $\mathbb {H}^d$. In particular, we obtain that, for $d=2,3,4$, $\mathcal {F}(\mathbb {H}^d)$ has a Schauder basis. Moreover, using a similar method, we also give an explicit isomorphism between $\mathrm {Lip}(\mathbb {H}^d)$ and $\mathrm {Lip}(\mathbb {R}^d)$.

Let $X, Y$ be two locally compact Hausdorff spaces and $T:C_0(X)\rightarrow C_0(Y)$ be a standard surjective ɛ-norm-additive map, i.e.

The estimate ‘$\frac{3}{2}\varepsilon$’ is optimal. And this result can be regarded as a new nonlinear extension of the Banach–Stone theorem.

We study the complexities of isometry and isomorphism classes of separable Banach spaces in the Polish spaces of Banach spaces, recently introduced and investigated by the authors in [14]. We obtain sharp results concerning the most classical separable Banach spaces.

We prove that the infinite-dimensional separable Hilbert space is characterized as the unique separable infinite-dimensional Banach space whose isometry class is closed, and also as the unique separable infinite-dimensional Banach space whose isomorphism class is $F_\sigma $. For $p\in \left [1,2\right )\cup \left (2,\infty \right )$, we show that the isometry classes of $L_p[0,1]$ and $\ell _p$ are $G_\delta $-complete sets and $F_{\sigma \delta }$-complete sets, respectively. Then we show that the isometry class of $c_0$ is an $F_{\sigma \delta }$-complete set.

Additionally, we compute the complexities of many other natural classes of separable Banach spaces; for instance, the class of separable $\mathcal {L}_{p,\lambda +}$-spaces, for $p,\lambda \geq 1$, is shown to be a $G_\delta $-set, the class of superreflexive spaces is shown to be an $F_{\sigma \delta }$-set, and the class of spaces with local $\Pi $-basis structure is shown to be a $\boldsymbol {\Sigma }^0_6$-set. The paper is concluded with many open problems and suggestions for a future research.

We prove some results on weakly almost square Banach spaces and their relatives. On the one hand, we discuss weak almost squareness in the setting of Banach function spaces. More precisely, let $(\Omega,\Sigma)$ be a measurable space, let E be a Banach lattice and let $\nu:\Sigma \to E^+$ be a non-atomic countably additive measure having relatively norm compact range. Then the space $L_1(\nu)$ is weakly almost square. This result applies to some abstract Cesàro function spaces. Similar arguments show that the Lebesgue–Bochner space $L_1(\mu,Y)$ is weakly almost square for any Banach space Y and for any non-atomic finite measure µ. On the other hand, we make some progress on the open question of whether there exists a locally almost square Banach space, which fails the diameter two property. In this line, we prove that if X is any Banach space containing a complemented isomorphic copy of c0, then for every $0 \lt \varepsilon \lt 1$, there exists an equivalent norm $|\cdot|$ on X satisfying the following: (i) every slice of the unit ball $B_{(X,|\cdot|)}$ has diameter 2; (ii) $B_{(X,|\cdot|)}$ contains non-empty relatively weakly open subsets of arbitrarily small diameter and (iii) $(X,|\cdot|)$ is (r, s)-SQ for all $0 \lt r,s \lt \frac{1-\varepsilon}{1+\varepsilon}$.

We give an example of a pair of real Banach spaces such that they are neither linearly isomorphic nor isomorphic with respect to the structure of Birkhoff–James orthogonality, but have mutually homeomorphic geometric structure spaces.

The main purpose of this paper is to study weight-semi-greedy Markushevich bases, and in particular, find conditions under which such bases are weight-almost greedy. In this context, we prove that, for a large class of weights, the two notions are equivalent. We also show that all weight semi-greedy bases are truncation quasi-greedy and weight-superdemocratic. In all of the above cases, we also bring to the context of weights the weak greedy and Chebyshev greedy algorithms—which are frequently studied in the literature on greedy approximation. In the course of our work, a new property arises naturally and its relation with squeeze symmetric and bidemocratic bases is given. In addition, we study some parameters involving the weak thresholding and Chebyshevian greedy algorithms. Finally, we give examples of conditional bases with some of the weighted greedy-type conditions we study.

Suppose that X and Y are two real normed spaces. A map $f:X\rightarrow Y$ is called a min-phase-isometry if it satisfies

We present properties of min-phase-isometries in the case that Y is strictly convex and show that if a min-phase-isometry f (not necessarily surjective) fixes the origin, then it is phase-equivalent to a linear isometry, that is, $f(x)=\varepsilon (x)g(x)$ for $x\in X$, where $g:X\rightarrow Y$ is a linear isometry and $\varepsilon $ is a map from X to $\{-1,1\}$.

Celebrating 100 years of the Banach contraction principle, we prove some fixed point theorems having all ingredients of the principle, but dealing with common fixed points of a contractive semigroup of nonlinear mappings acting in a modulated topological vector space. This research follows the ideas of the author’s recent papers [‘On modulated topological vector spaces and applications’, Bull. Aust. Math. Soc. 101 (2020), 325–332, and ‘Normal structure in modulated topological vector spaces’, Comment. Math. 60 (2020), 1–11]. Modulated topological vector spaces generalise, among others, Banach spaces and modular function spaces. The interest in modulars reflects the fact that the notions of ‘norm like’ but ‘noneuclidean’ (and not even necessarily convex) constructs to measure a level of proximity between complex objects are frequently used in science and technology. To prove our fixed point results in this setting, we introduce a new concept of Opial sets using analogies with the norm-weak and modular versions of the Opial property. As an example, the results of this work can be applied to spaces like $L^p$ for $p> 0 $, variable Lebesgue spaces $L^{p(\cdot )}$ where $1 \leq p(t) < + \infty $, Orlicz and Musielak–Orlicz spaces.
