This chapter explores how the ancient literary and philosophical dialogue form maintained its relevance as a tool of cultural and religious identity formation and competition. It addresses the ongoing scholarly discussion regarding the scope for dialogue in the face of rising authoritarianism and dogmatism in late antiquity.
Chapter 19 looks at two landmark decisions that were issued after the submission of the full manuscript of this book for publication: the Advisory Opinion of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea on climate change and marine protection, and the judgment of the European Court of Human Rights in Verein KlimaSeniorinnen Schweiz and Others v Switzerland. The authors situate these decisions within the broader context of climate litigation, examining their implications for future cases and drawing connections to the themes explored in other chapters. They demonstrate how these decisions both reflect and advance emerging best practice in climate jurisprudence, potentially inspiring further innovation based on science and rigorous legal reasoning.
This study introduces a novel approach to measuring the evolution of union power in Latin America. Using an original dataset covering ten dimensions of union activity across 17 countries from 1990 to 2020, it addresses shortcomings in prior research based on overly broad indicators or narrow case studies. In line with the specialized literature, factor analysis identifies four distinct dimensions of union power—associational, structural, institutional, and societal—each showing unique variation across countries. Hierarchical cluster analysis reveals four ideal types: (1) strongly embedded unionism, with robust associational and institutional strength (Argentina, Uruguay); (2) social movement unionism, marked by strong societal alliances but limited institutional access (e.g., Bolivia, Ecuador); (3) bureaucratic and isolated unionism, with institutional integration but weak societal mobilization (Brazil, Chile, Mexico); and (4) low-intensity unionism, prevalent in Central America. Correlation analyses reveal complex interactions among these dimensions. The study provides new empirical and conceptual tools to advance comparative research on labor movements in the region.
Heresiological catalogues are one of the most distinctive forms of literature concerning heresy and have also traditionally been one of the most difficult to interpret. This chapter traces the development of this form of writing, focusing on the most productive period in late antiquity, and explores how much such works were intended to be employed in active ‘heresy-hunting’ and what other purposes they might have had, including increasing the authority and status of their authors.
This chapter surveys Qiu’s ideas about financial administration, drawing on Section 4, “Administering State Finances” (Chapters 20–35) of the Supplement. The chapter discusses Qiu’s recommendations for regular and light taxation centred on the land tax and how to control government expenditure, before turning to his view of the state’s relationship with the market and merchants. The state must only involve itself in the market in a limited way, with the exception of moderating the supply of grain, since it is a basic necessity for life and the fundamental source of wealth. A brief overview of policies illustrates Qiu’s support for commerce. Throughout, the chapter also considers how Qiu’s ideas might have reflected or influenced actual practice. While there is some indication that his proposals may have been implemented, by the late Ming and especially from the later Wanli era onwards, the prudent financial administration that Qiu advocated did not exist.
This chapter examines the impact of European colonial border making – internal as well as external – on the Lake Kivu region. After the border dispute was settled, Belgians sought to eliminate the Rwandan monarchy’s political claims over the region. Yet, local elites, often chiefs, used these new spatial orderings to promote their own interests, bringing the border between Congo and what was then the German territory of Rwanda into practice. After World War I, when Rwanda had become under Belgian tutelage, the Belgian administration transitioned into more systematic interventions in the political organizations of these societies, fundamentally changing them. In Rwanda, it meant increasing control over regions that had before exerted more autonomy, while rule became increasingly tied to one group – Tutsi – even if the large majority of Tutsi never held positions of political power. In Kivu, the reorganization of these societies also implied an increased territorialization of these societies, with an impact on forms of identification becoming more fixed, as well as tying access to resources more firmly to “belonging” to a certain “national” or “ethnic” territory. Thus, while borders could be straddled to escape oppressive circumstances or to improve livelihoods, they also had the potential to increase conflicts over resources, and to be used as a tool for exclusion.
This chapter surveys the transformation of the North African countryside in Late Antiquity, analysing shifts in settlement patterns, agricultural production and economic structures from the late Roman period through the Arab conquest in 689. It highlights regional variations across ancient provinces such as Mauretania, Numidia, Africa Proconsularis, Byzacena and Tripolitana, emphasising that the rural landscape did not experience uniform decline but rather underwent adaptation and reorganisation. Discussing North Africa’s role as a key supplier of olive oil, grain, wine and fine ceramics, notably African Red Slip (ARS) pottery, the chapter challenges earlier assumptions that economic collapse followed the Vandal conquest in 439, showing instead that new industrialised production methods led to increased ARS exports during the late fifth century. However, the Byzantine reconquest in 539 did not reintegrate the region into the larger imperial economy as expected, instead fostering greater regionalisation and isolation. This contribution also addresses the Christianisation of the countryside, analysing the spread of monastic estates and bishoprics and their impact on land use. By examining archaeological surveys and pottery distribution, the chapter concludes that rural settlement patterns in North Africa were shaped by a combination of environmental, economic and political factors.
