Previous studies have reported co-morbidities of autoimmune thyroid disorders (AITD), including Hashimoto’s disease and Graves’ disease and celiac disease (CeD), as well as the possible beneficial effects of a gluten-free diet (GFD) on AITD. Nonetheless, it remains uncertain whether there is a genetic causal relationship between AITD and CeD, while the beneficial effects of a GFD are controversial. This study aims to explore the causal relationship between CeD and AITD, particularly with Hashimoto’s disease, and to determine whether a GFD is beneficial for AITD. We performed a two-sample Mendelian randomisation analysis on data from the largest meta-analysis summary statistics of AITD, CeD and GFD. Genetic instrumental variables were established by pinpointing SNP that relate to corresponding factors. In assessing sensitivity and heterogeneity, we conducted examinations of MR Egger, weighted median, simple mode, weighted mode and MR Egger intercept tests. Hashimoto’s disease was found to play a pathogenic role in increasing the risk of CeD (ORIVW = 1·544 (95 % CI 1·153, 2·068), P = 0·00355), and our Mendelian randomisation study does not support genetic liability related to CeD with Graves’ disease and GFD with AITD. This study supports the positive correlation between Hashimoto’s disease risk and CeD risk, while GFD has no protective effect on AITD and may exert its effect through other mechanisms. These findings provide valuable insights into potential targets for disease intervention and treatment at the genetic level.
To investigate the association of dietary patterns (DP) with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes (T2D) among Tibetan adults, first to identify DP associated with abdominal obesity and examine their relationships with prediabetes and T2D. Additionally, the study aims to investigate the mediating effects of body fat distribution and altitude on the associations between these DP and the prevalence of prediabetes and T2D.
Design:
An open cohort among Tibetans.
Setting:
Community-based.
Participants:
The survey recruited 1003 participants registered for health check-ups from November to December 2018 and 1611 participants from December 2021 to May 2022. During the baseline and follow-up data collection, 1818 individuals participated in at least one of the two surveys, with 515 of them participating in both.
Results:
Two DP were identified by reduced rank regression. DP1 had high consumption of beef and mutton, non-caloric drink and offal and low intake in tubers and roots, salty snacks, onion and spring onion, fresh fruits, desserts and nuts and seeds; DP2 had high intake of whole grains, Tibetan cheese, light-coloured vegetables and pork and low intake of sugar-sweetened beverages, whole-fat dairy products and poultry. Individuals in the highest tertile of DP1 showed higher risks of prediabetes (OR 95 % CI) 1·35 (1·05, 1·73) and T2D 1·36 (1·05, 1·76). The highest tertile of DP2 exhibited an elevated risk of T2D 1·63 (1·11, 2·40) in full adjustment.
Conclusion:
Abdominal adiposity-related DP are positively associated with T2D. Promoting healthy eating should be considered to prevent T2D among Tibetan adults.
To investigate the effects of activating/inhibiting AmelSmo on the olfactory genes and signalling pathways of Apis mellifera ligustica, as well as the potential regulatory mechanisms involved. Transcriptomic sequencing was performed on Apis mellifera ligustica antennae using Illumina HiSeq platform following administration of cyclopamine (inhibitor) and purmorphamine (agonist). Differential gene expression analysis, coupled with GO and KEGG pathway annotations, facilitated the identification of olfactory receptor genes. The reliability of transcriptome data was subsequently validated through quantitative real–time–polymerase chain reaction analysis. Transcriptomic analysis revealed 12,356 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between inhibitor and control groups, with 276 genes showing significant differential expression. Similarly, 12,356 DEGs were identified between the agonist and control groups, among which 672 genes exhibited significant differential expression. The GO annotation revealed that the DEGs in the inhibitor group and the agonist group were mainly enriched in the biological process such as cellular process, metabolic process, and biological regulation; in cellular component, enrichment was mainly observed in cell, cell part, and organelle; and in molecular function, the main enrichment was in binding and catalytic activity. KEGG pathway analysis indicated that DEGs from both groups were primarily enriched in signal transduction pathways. Among the DEGs, three olfactory receptor genes were identified in the inhibitor group: odorant receptor 19, odorant receptor 22, and odorant receptor 5. The agonist group exhibited two olfactory receptor genes: odorant receptor 109 and odorant receptor 26. All these olfactory receptor genes demonstrated downregulated expression patterns. Transcriptomic sequencing analysis identified five olfactory receptor genes. The changes in gene expression levels suggest that the activation or inhibition of AmelSmo may regulate the expression of olfactory receptors via the Hedgehog signalling pathway. It is speculated that AmelSmo may play a regulatory role in the olfactory system of bees.
To investigate associations between dietary intake and patterns of food preparation by age group.
Design:
This cross-sectional study analysed dietary intake data from the most recent Portuguese National Food, Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey. Cluster analysis categorised dietary intake based on the source of food preparation. Regression models were used to study the association between dietary daily intake, Healthy Eating Score (HES) and patterns of food preparation.
Setting:
Portugal, using data representative of the Portuguese population.
Participants:
A total of 5005 Portuguese residents aged 3–84 years were included in the analysis. Dietary intake and food preparation patterns were examined by age group.
Results:
The predominant pattern of food preparation was food prepared by restaurants, canteens and other away-from-home establishments (45·9 %, 95 % CI = 43·8, 48·1). Children and adolescents in this pattern had significantly higher intakes of energy and carbohydrates but lower protein intake compared with those consuming predominantly home-prepared foods. Among adults and the elderly, this pattern was associated with higher intakes of energy, saturated fats, trans fats and free sugars and lower fibre intake. Additionally, children and adolescents whose diets predominantly included food prepared away-from-home showed a decrease in HES (β = –0·7, 95 % CI = –1·3, –0·2), and adults experienced a greater reduction (β = –1·2, 95 % CI = –1·5, –0·9).
Conclusions:
In Portugal, consuming food prepared away from home is associated with poorer dietary quality, with higher energy and unhealthy nutrient intake and lower HES, suggesting a need for interventions focused on promoting healthier food preparation practices.
Indaziflam (Rejuvra®), a preemergence herbicide first registered in vine and tree nut crops, was recently approved for applications to rangeland for winter annual grass control. Indaziflam controls cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum L.) for at least 3 yr, and control can extend into a fourth and fifth year; however, it is very difficult to find indaziflam residues in the soil 2 yr after application. Indaziflam could be absorbed by seeds still retained on the plant and on the soil surface in sufficient concentrations to stop establishment. To test this hypothesis, B. tectorum seeds and jointed goatgrass (Aegilops cylindrica Host) spikelets were treated with indaziflam and imazapic at rates from 5.4 to 175 g ai ha−1 using a greenhouse track sprayer delivering 187 L ha−1. Treated seeds were planted into field soil, and plants were allowed to grow for 21 d under greenhouse conditions. Growth was compared with growth of non-treated controls. In addition, a second set of treated seeds were exposed to rainfall 1 and 24 h after treatment and rainfall amounts ranging from 3 to 24 mm to determine whether rainfall impacted herbicide performance. Bromus tectorum was so sensitive to indaziflam that establishment was eliminated at all rates. Imazapic inhibited B. tectorum establishment with an ED90 of 67 g ai ha−1. Indaziflam effectively inhibits A. cylindrica establishment with an ED90 of 7.4 g ai ha−1 compared with imazapic with an ED50 of 175 g ai ha−1. Indaziflam’s impact on A. cylindrica establishment was not significantly impacted by rainfall, indicating that the herbicide was absorbed to the seed coat. These findings support the hypothesis that indaziflam’s long-term control could result from its ability to inhibit establishment of seeds retained in the canopy and those on the soil surface at the time of application.
Femoral neck bone mineral density (FNBMD) is a high risk factor for femoral head fractures, and coffee intake affects bone mineral density, but the effect on FNBMD remains to be explored. First, we conducted an observational study in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and collected data on coffee intake, FNBMD, and sixteen covariates. Weight linear regression was used to explore the association of coffee intake with FNBMD. Then, Mendelian randomisation (MR) was used to explore the causal relationship between coffee intake and FNBMD, the exposure factor was coffee intake, and the outcome factor was FNBMD. The inverse variance weighting (IVW) method was used for the analysis, while heterogeneity tests, sensitivity, and pleiotropy analysis were performed. A total of 5 915 people were included in the cross-sectional study, including 3 178 men and 2 737 women. In the completely adjusted model, no coffee was used as a reference. The ORs for the overall population at ‘< 1’, ‘1–<2’, ‘2–<4’, and ‘4+’ (95% CI) were 0.02 (–0.01, 0.04), 0.00 (–0.01, 0.02), –0.01 (–0.02, 0.00), and 0.00 (–0.01, 0.02), respectively. The male and female population showed no statistically significant differences in both univariate and multivariate linear regressions. In the MR study, the IVW results showed an OR (95% CI) of 1.06 (0.88–1.27), a P-value of 0.55, and an overall F-value of 80.31. The heterogeneity, sensitivity analyses, and pleiotropy had no statistical significance. Our study used cross-sectional studies and MR to demonstrate that there is no correlation or causal relationship between coffee intake and FNBMD.
Every private rural property in Brazil must maintain a percentage of its area with conserved native vegetation, establishing a legal reserve area (LRA). This percentage is defined by the Brazilian Federal Law on Protection of Native Vegetation and is 20–80% of the rural property, depending on the political boundary and vegetation formation. However, the Environmental Code of Mato Grosso stipulates that vegetation type determines the LRA percentage in the state of Mato Grosso, considering both vegetation formation and floristic composition. In addition, the state adopts a coarse-scale vegetation map as a reference, despite the existence of a more accurate official map. In this study, we calculated the impacts of these provisions by combining legal interpretation, spatial analysis and ecological reasoning, in accordance with the scientific concepts of ecology, and intersecting official maps from the State Environmental Agency and the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, at the scales of 1:1 000 000 and 1:250 000, respectively. A total of 9 045 065 ha could have their LRA requirement reduced from 80% to 35% under Mato Grosso’s legislation, potentially authorizing deforestation in the Amazon, Cerrado and Pantanal, in apparent contradiction to federal law. These findings highlight that issues related to the concepts, classifications and mapping scales for defining native vegetation have significant implications for biodiversity conservation.
This study explored whether lifestyle therapy that promoted adherence to a Mediterranean-style diet as a treatment for depression led to environmental co-benefits. Participants (n 75 complete case) were Australian adults in the Curbing Anxiety and Depression using Lifestyle Medicine non-inferiority, randomised controlled trial, which showed that lifestyle therapy was non-inferior to psychotherapy in reducing depressive symptoms, when delivered in group format via video conferencing over an 8-week treatment period. In this secondary analysis, we hypothesised that the lifestyle arm would be superior to the psychotherapy arm in reducing the environmental impact of self-reported diet over time. Dietary intake derived from FFQ at baseline and 8 weeks was transformed into environmental impact scores by calculating global warming potential (GWP)*. GWP* was calculated for total dietary intake and distinct food groups (Australian Dietary Guidelines and NOVA classifications). Within-arm changes in GWP* over time were calculated using the median difference. Neither arm showed significant changes. Between-arm differences in percentage change in GWP* scores over time were analysed using generalised estimating equations models. No between-arm difference for total GWP* score was found (β = 11·06 (–7·04, 29·15)). When examining distinct food groups, results were mixed. These novel findings contribute to the sparse evidence base that has measured the environmental impact of diets in a clinical trial context. Whilst lifestyle therapy that reduced depressive symptoms did not have clear environmental benefits relative to psychotherapy, nutritional counselling that focuses on the environmental impact of food choices may drive more pronounced planetary co-benefits.
Monitoring wildlife populations in vast, remote landscapes poses significant challenges for conservation and management, particularly when studying elusive species that range across inaccessible terrain. Traditional survey methods often prove impractical or insufficient in such environments, necessitating innovative technological solutions. This study evaluates the effectiveness of deep learning for automated Bactrian camel detection in drone imagery across the complex desert terrain of the Gobi Desert of Mongolia. Using YOLOv8 and a dataset of 1479 high-resolution drone-captured images of Bactrian camels, we developed and validated an automated detection system. Our model demonstrated strong detection performance with high precision and recall values across different environmental conditions. Scale-aware analysis revealed distinct performance patterns between medium- and small-scale detections, informing optimal drone flight parameters. The system maintained consistent processing efficiency across various batch sizes while preserving detection quality. These findings advance conservation monitoring capabilities for Bactrian camels and other wildlife in remote ecosystems, providing wildlife managers with an efficient tool to track population dynamics and inform conservation strategies in expansive, difficult-to-access habitats.
Sugar beet root damage at harvest promotes sucrose losses of circa 0.1 – 0.4 % day–1 in storage. However, root response to environmental stresses at harvest and their consequential rates of damage are not known. We investigated the effects of temperature and water stress at harvest on root resilience to damage and tissue strength. Water (irrigated to field capacity and non-irrigated) and temperature (cold and mild) treatments were imposed on physiologically mature sugar beet plants for seven weeks prior to and for three days after harvesting, respectively. Water status at harvest significantly affected relative water content (RWC) (p < 0.001), root weight (p < 0.001) and root width (p < 0.001). RWC was positively correlated to surface damage (R2 = 0.43, p = 0.02), root tip damage (R2 = 0.42, p = 0.03), tissue compression (R2 = 0.41, p = 0.05) and tissue puncture (R2 = 0.46, p = 0.01). Tissue damage was not affected by root tissue temperature of 4 °C compared to 12 °C. We conclude that sugar beet damage at harvest is not influenced by root temperatures over the range commonly observed in the UK and temperate production areas. However, higher water status at harvest, such as would be observed in a wet season, increases root tip and surface damage. These findings will help to inform optimum harvesting conditions to minimize sugar loss from the sugar beet crop.
To estimate the within-households association between change in income over time and food purchases in a national panel of households. The need to shift towards healthy and sustainable diets is widely recognised, thus the importance of identifying the factors that influence food purchase decisions.
Design:
Longitudinal observational study; for each of the thirty-three food items queried, we ran a conditional logistic fixed-effect regression model to evaluate the association between change in income per-capita and food purchases (yes/no) during the past week, adjusted by covariates.
Setting:
Mexican Family Life Survey.
Participants:
6008 households that participated in the survey for at least two of the three available waves of study (2002, 2005 and 2009).
Results:
Within-households, the OR (95 % CI) of purchasing the food in the past week for an increase in 1 sd of income was 1·09 (1·02, 1·16) for rarer fruits (other than bananas, apples and oranges); 1·11 (1·04, 1·18) for beef; 1·06 (1·00, 1·13) for canned tuna/sardines; 1·09 (1·02, 1·18) for fish/shellfish; 1·08 (1·02, 1·16) for discretionary packaged products and 1·15 (1·08, 1·23) for soft drinks. There were some differences by urban/rural area or socio-economic status (SES); mainly, those with lower SES had increased odds of purchasing the food item in more cases (ten out of thirty-three food items).
Conclusions:
Households’ income growth can have mixed effects on the healthiness and sustainability of food purchases. Public policies to improve the food environment and nutrition education are necessary to enhance the positive and counteract the negative effect of income.
To determine the prevalence and characteristics of plant-based patterns in the Spanish population and assess their potential impact on individuals with similar socio-demographic backgrounds.
Design:
We estimated vegetarian and vegan individuals’ national and regional prevalence and analysed their socio-demographic characteristics and weekly dietary intake patterns. Individuals with a plant-based dietary pattern were matched to a control group (1:4) with similar socio-demographic characteristics. Associations with the prevalence risk of common chronic diseases, self-reported health status, lifestyle and healthcare use were analysed with unadjusted and adjusted logistic regression models.
Setting:
A population-based survey of individuals residing in Spain.
Participants:
Data from 22 072 participants were examined.
Results:
The prevalence of plant-based diets was 5·62‰ (95 % CI: 4·33, 7·28), and adherents were female (68·6 %), single (62·3 %) and university-educated 41·8 %) (P < 0·001). They reported higher rates of ‘never’ consuming snacks (50 % v. 35 %), fast food (58 % v. 36 %) and sweets (33 % v. 14 %). Lifestyle factors did not differ between the plant-based and omnivorous groups; however, adherence to plant-based diets was associated with a prevalence risk of depressive symptoms (OR 2·58, 95 % CI: 1·00, 6·65), stroke (OR 7·08, 95 % CI: 1·27, 39·46) and increased consultations for mental health and complementary medicine (OR 3·21, 95 % CI: 1·38, 7·43).
Conclusions:
Plant-based diets are uncommon and are associated with specific socio-demographic profiles, particularly sex. When comparing individuals with similar socio-demographic characteristics, individuals with plant-based diets and omnivores had similar lifestyles. Addressing patient concerns regarding diet and personal well-being might prioritise healthy behaviours over specific dietary patterns.
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in intensive care units (ICUs) is a critical issue, which has been exacerbated by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. This study investigated AMR prevalence and its associated factors among ICU patients in two Vietnamese hospitals from January 2020 to June 2022. Electronic medical records of 1,296 patients with 2,432 non-duplicate bacterial isolates were collected in Phu Tho Hospital (Northern, rural, non-COVID-19 treatment) and 175 Hospital (Southern, urban, COVID-19 treatment centre). Antibiotic susceptibility testing was conducted using VITEK2, BD Phoenix 100, and disk diffusion methods. Logistic regression with 1,000 bootstrap resampling and cross-validation was used to examine factors linked to AMR. Results revealed Acinetobacter spp. (27.5%) as leading strains in Phu Tho Hospital, while Klebsiella spp. (28.0%) predominated in 175 Hospital, except during 2021when Acinetobacter spp. reached the peak. Alarmingly, Acinetobacter spp., Klebsiella spp., and Pseudomonas aeruginosa demonstrated the highest AMR rates and multidrug resistance rates (83.8%–95.8%) in both hospitals. Resistance to cephalosporins, carbapenems, and fluoroquinolones ranged from 75% to 100%. Significant associated factors included age, sex, location, initial admission diagnosis, and bacterial isolation month. This study highlights the urgent need for controlling AMR in ICUs during the pandemic.
As cities like Beijing expand rapidly, green and blue spaces (GBS)—essential for ecosystem services (ESs) such as clean air, flood control, and recreation—are increasingly threatened. This 20-year study examines how urban expansion and policy interventions have shaped Beijing’s GBS. While green initiatives have increased natural areas, unchecked urban sprawl has fragmented these spaces, reducing their environmental benefits. Satellite data and urban planning analyses underscore a key lesson: maintaining well-connected natural zones is critical for urban resilience. These findings are broadly applicable for rapidly growing cities globally, urging urban planners to integrate ecological conservation with development, and to safeguard healthy environments and vibrant communities.
Technical Summary
This study quantifies the spatiotemporal dynamics of urban GBS in Beijing, evaluating their essential role in delivering ESs and strengthening urban resilience. Although China has achieved substantial progress in urban greening, the ecological impacts of rapid urbanization on GBS configuration and connectivity have not been comprehensively quantified. Using an integrated analytical framework combining principal component analysis and multiple linear regression, we reveal how urban development strategies have shaped GBS dynamics over two decades. A spatially explicit analysis, utilizing geographically weighted regression, further elucidates the heterogeneous relationships among the normalized difference vegetation index, human footprint index, and ESs delivery capacity. Notably, socioeconomic incentives and green infrastructure governance—especially objective indicators such as forest, garden, and greenspace area—have effectively driven GBS expansion. However, urban expansion has led to pronounced fragmentation of peri-urban GBS, suggesting potential degradation of their ecosystem service support functions. These findings emphasize the need for adaptive GBS management strategies that balance ecological conservation with sustainable urban growth in rapidly developing cities.

Mosquito-borne California serogroup orthobunyaviruses Inkoo (INKV) and Chatanga (CHATV) are known to be endemic in Finland with a high seroprevalence. We developed a novel multiplexed reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction method for discriminating between the INKV and CHATV. This assay was used along with traditional serological tests to study a set of summertime patients during the years 2021, 2023, and 2024 to assess the epidemiology and prevalence of acute INKV and CHATV infections in Finland. Altogether, 1470 samples were screened, and there were 16 patients who had an acute infection based on serological findings and/or nucleic acid test. The orthobunyavirus-IgG seroprevalences were 18% (2021), 20% (2023), and 30% (2024), being lower than that in studies from 20 years ago. Neutralization tests were carried out, and all but one acute case had more than four-fold higher titre to INVK vs. CHATV, indicating specificity to INKV infection. The results suggest that epidemiology has changed from previous studies, and INKV should be considered a causative agent of summertime infections in Finland. The symptom diversity in mild disease outcomes should be studied to guide orthobunyavirus recognition by clinicians. The use of molecular assay discriminating INKV and CHATV aids in understanding disease associations.
Outbreaks of Rachiplusia nu have occurred on soybean in Brazil as the first species resistant to the Bt soybean expressing only Cry1Ac protein, triggering a significant increase in insecticide use on the crop. This threatens one of the most important benefits of adopting Bt soybean cultivars – the reduction of chemicals. Therefore, this research studied the biology and parasitism capacity of Trichogramma pretiosum at 20, 25, and 30 ± 2 °C on R. nu eggs in order to evaluate the potential of releasing this egg parasitoid in soybean to manage R. nu. Parasitoid exhibited high biological performance on the R. nu eggs as observed in the lifetime parasitism of 24.9, 46.4, and 34.4 R. nu eggs at 20, 25, and 30 °C, respectively, and 100% emergence in both biology and parasitism capacity experiments. The sex ratio was statistically lower at 20 °C (0.4947), but at all studied temperatures, the production of female descendants was equal (sex ratio of 0.4947 at 20 °C) or higher (sex ratio of 0.6666 at 25 °C and 0.6524 at 30 °C). All other evaluated parameters were similar to previously positive recorded observations for T. pretiosum on other soybean pests, such as Anticarsia gemmatalis and Chrysodeixis includens, against which the parasitoid has already been commercially released in the fields as a biocontrol option. Therefore, T. pretiosum might also be released in soybean as an egg parasitoid against R. nu, what needs to be confirmed in future field trials.
Organic strawberry production using the annual hill system relies predominantly on polyethylene (PE) mulch for weed control. However, although nonbiodegradable PE mulches are allowed to be used in organic production, albeit with restrictions, they pose environmental risks, and disposal can be a problem. We assessed cellulose-based hydromulches (HMs) as a PE mulch substitute in organic strawberry production. HMs made from shredded newsprint, water, guar gum (6% of HM dry mass), and with or without a biochar-based colorant were applied to raised beds, then day-neutral strawberry plants were transplanted. Four HM treatments combining dark (D) or light (L) colored and low (L) 5,800 or high (H) 8,700 kg DW ha−1 rates, were tested against paper mulch (PAP), white-on-black PE mulch, and weedy and weed-free checks at two sites in North Dakota: Absaraka (with a sandy soil, common purslane-dominated) and Fargo (with a clay soil, Venice mallow-dominated). At Fargo, high-rate HMs suppressed weed density as effectively as PE mulch. At Absaraka, HMs reduced weed density less effectively than PE and PAP mulches; low-rate HMs performed poorly compared with high rates (35 and 40 weeds m−2 vs. 4 and 17 weeds m−2), likely because of rainfall after HM application and location-specific differences in the weed communities and soil types. At Absaraka, strawberry yield from the use of HM-DH was greater than PE (272 vs. 144 g plant−1), whereas yield from HM-LH, HM-DL and HM-LL mulches (215, 168 and 141 g plant−1, respectively) were similar to yield with PE mulch. At Fargo, yield for all HMs (287, 223, 211, and 162 g plant−1) did not differ from that of PE (253 g plant−1). Although only high-rate HMs at Fargo suppressed weeds similarly to PE, fruit yield and quality were similar to that of PE with all HMs. Therefore, HMs could be promising sustainable alternatives to PE mulch for use in organic strawberry systems.
This study aims to explore the perspectives of urban and regional living Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults and children regarding Bush Foods, nutrition and health to advocate for future culturally informed programmes and policy.
Design:
The qualitative study conducted nine Yarning sessions, which were recorded and transcribed verbatim. An inductive, reflexive thematic analysis using a codebook was employed to analyse the data.
Setting:
All Yarns were conducted face-to-face in various locations across Southeast Queensland.
Participants:
Yarning sessions were conducted with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participants (n 20), including ten adults and ten children. Participants resided in areas classified as inner regional, outer regional and major cities.
Results:
Five interconnected themes were generated concerning participants’ perspectives on Bush Foods, nutrition and health. These themes included the effects of colonisation and bureaucratic impositions, socio-environmental factors influencing food provision, the significance of Bush Foods in cultural connection and nutritional health, the importance of reciprocity in communities and the nuanced role of agency influenced by education.
Conclusions:
The findings were synthesised into two overarching concepts: the role of family, kin and culture at the individual and community level, aligning with cultural determinants of Indigenous health, and the broader socio-political influences of colonialism, capitalism and power imbalances, reflecting social determinants of Indigenous health. This research highlights a need for culturally informed health policies guided by consideration of cultural, social and commercial determinants that support an Indigenised food system and Bush Food reintegration for urban-living Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults and children.
Since 1994, the Andalusian Institute of Geophysics of the University of Granada group has been monitoring the seismic activity of Deception Island volcano (South Shetland Islands, Antarctica) during summer surveys. In this review, we analyse long-period and volcanic-tectonic events, including tremor episodes, recorded from 2011–2012 to 2021–2022 surveys with a local network and a seismic array. The seismo-volcanic activity on Deception Island occurs very locally, mainly as a result of tectonic destabilization induced by volcanic activity along with regional stresses, as a consequence of rifting and subduction processes spanning the South Shetland Islands, Bransfield Strait and Antarctica Peninsula. During this period, two changes to the volcanic alert level due to different volcanic parameters can be highlighted. The first of them was caused by the 2014–2015 seismic swarm as a consequence of a great regional perturbation located to the north-east of Deception Island, which spread around to the entire volcano. The second one, in the 2019–2020 survey, was established as a result of a significant increase in deformation parameters as a prelude of the August 2020 massive earthquake swarm that occurred in the Bransfield Strait, near the Orca submarine volcano. Furthermore, in the previous 2018–2019 survey, a peak of seismic activity was also recorded.
