Given a positive, decreasing sequence a, whose sum is L, we consider all the closed subsets of [0, L] such that the lengths of their complementary open intervals are in one-to-one correspondence with the sequence a. The aim of this paper is to investigate the possible values that Assouad-type dimensions can attain for this class of sets. In many cases, the set of attainable values is a closed interval whose endpoints we determine.
We study the number of random permutations needed to invariably generate the symmetric group Sn when the distribution of cycle counts has the strong α-logarithmic property. The canonical example is the Ewens sampling formula, for which the special case α = 1 corresponds to uniformly random permutations.
For strong α-logarithmic measures and almost every α, we show that precisely ⌈(1−αlog2)−1⌉ permutations are needed to invariably generate Sn with asymptotically positive probability. A corollary is that for many other probability measures on Sn no fixed number of permutations will invariably generate Sn with positive probability. Along the way we generalize classic theorems of Erdős, Tehran, Pyber, Łuczak and Bovey to permutations obtained from the Ewens sampling formula.
We prove a homotopy invariance result for a certain covering space of the space of ordered configurations of two points in M × X where M is a closed smooth manifold and X is any fixed aspherical space which is not a point.
We prove some stability results for certain classes of C*-algebras. We prove that, whenever A is a finite-dimensional C*-algebra, B is a C*-algebra and ϕ: A → B is approximately a *-homomorphism, there is an actual *-homomorphism close to ϕ by a factor depending only on how far ϕ is from being a *-homomorphism and not on A or B.
Classically, Nevanlinna showed that functions from the complex upper half plane into itself which satisfy nice asymptotic conditions are parametrized by finite measures on the real line. Furthermore, the higher order asymptotic behaviour at infinity of a map from the complex upper half plane into itself is governed by the existence of moments of its representing measure, which was the key to his solution of the Hamburger moment problem. Agler and McCarthy showed that an analogue of the above correspondence holds between a Pick function f of two variables, an analytic function which maps the product of two upper half planes into the upper half plane, and moment-like quantities arising from an operator theoretic representation for f. We apply their ‘moment’ theory to show that there is a fine hierarchy of levels of regularity at infinity for Pick functions in two variables, given by the Löwner classes and intermediate Löwner classes of order N, which can be exhibited in terms of certain formulae akin to the Julia quotient.
In this paper we extend to Kawahara type equations a uniqueness result obtained by C. E. Kenig, G. Ponce, and L. Vega for KdV type equations. We prove that, under certain decay's conditions, the null solution is the unique solution.
A connected space is called a C0-space if its rational cup product is trivial. A characterizing property of C0-spaces is obtained. This property is used to calculate the algebraic K0-group K0(C𝔽(X)) of the ring of continuous functions for infinite-dimensional complexes X.
We consider the finite-time blow-up of solutions for the following two kinds of nonlinear wave equation in de Sitter spacetime:
This proof is based on a new blow-up criterion, which generalizes that by Sideris. Furthermore, we give the lifespan estimate of solutions for the problems.
In this paper, we consider the Stokes equations in a perforated domain. When the number of holes increases while their radius tends to 0, it is proven in Desvillettes et al. [J. Stat. Phys.131 (2008) 941–967], under suitable dilution assumptions, that the solution is well approximated asymptotically by solving a Stokes–Brinkman equation. We provide here quantitative estimates in $L^{p}$-norms of this convergence.
We prove a compactness theorem for metrics with bounded integral curvature on a fixed closed surface $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F4}$. As a corollary we obtain a new convergence result for sequences of metrics with conical singularities, where an accumulation of singularities is allowed.
We investigate the structure of the twisted Brauer monoid , comparing and contrasting it with the structure of the (untwisted) Brauer monoid . We characterize Green's relations and pre-orders on , describe the lattice of ideals and give necessary and sufficient conditions for an ideal to be idempotent generated. We obtain formulae for the rank (smallest size of a generating set) and (where applicable) the idempotent rank (smallest size of an idempotent generating set) of each principal ideal; in particular, when an ideal is idempotent generated, its rank and idempotent rank are equal. As an application of our results, we describe the idempotent generated subsemigroup of (which is not an ideal), as well as the singular ideal of (which is neither principal nor idempotent generated), and we deduce that the singular part of the Brauer monoid is idempotent generated, a result previously proved by Maltcev and Mazorchuk.
The work presents the analysis of the free boundary value problem related to the one-dimensional invasion model of new species in biofilm reactors. In the framework of continuum approach to mathematical modelling of biofilm growth, the problem consists of a system of non-linear hyperbolic partial differential equations governing the microbial species growth and a system of semi-linear elliptic partial differential equations describing the substrate trends. The model is completed with a system of elliptic partial differential equations governing the diffusion and reaction of planktonic cells, which are able to switch their mode of growth from planktonic to sessile when specific environmental conditions are found. Two systems of non-linear differential equations for the substrate and planktonic cells mass balance within the bulk liquid are also considered. The free boundary evolution is governed by a differential equation that accounts for detachment. The qualitative analysis is performed and a uniqueness and existence result is presented. Furthermore, two special models of biological and engineering interest are discussed numerically. The invasion of Anammox bacteria in a constituted biofilm inhabiting the deammonification units of the wastewater treatment plants is simulated. Numerical simulations are run to evaluate the influence of the colonization process on biofilm structure and activity.
Collision of equilibria with a splitting manifold has been locally studied, but might also be a contributing factor to global bifurcations. In particular, a boundary collision can be coincident with collision of a virtual equilibrium with a periodic orbit, giving an analogue to a homoclinic bifurcation. This type of bifurcation is demonstrated in a non-smooth climate application. Here, we describe the non-smooth bifurcation structure, as well as the smooth bifurcation structure for which the non-smooth homoclinic bifurcation is a limiting case.
