In this paper, we introduce the notions of almost upper semi-Fredholm and strictly singular pairs of subspaces and show that the class of almost upper semi-Fredholm pairs of subspaces is stable under strictly singular pairs perturbation. We apply this perturbation result to investigate the stability of almost semi-Fredholm multi-valued linear operators in normed spaces under strictly singular perturbation as well as the behaviour of the index under perturbation.
Let F be a field of characteristic p ≠ 2 and G a group without 2-elements having an involution ∗. Extend the involution linearly to the group ring FG, and let (FG)− denote the set of skew elements with respect to ∗. In this paper, we show that if G is finite and (FG)− is Lie metabelian, then G is nilpotent. Based on this result, we deduce that if G is torsion, p > 7 and (FG)− is Lie metabelian, then G must be abelian. Exceptions are constructed for smaller values of p.
In this paper we introduce a vector-valued uncentred maximal operator in the setting of one-dimensional Bessel–Kingman hypergoups, and prove a maximal theorem for it.
Let n be any positive integer and p be any prime. Also, let X be any spectrum and let K(n) denote the nth Morava K-theory spectrum. Then we construct a descent spectral sequence with abutment π∗(LK(n)(X)) and E2-term equal to the continuous cohomology of Gn, the extended Morava stabilizer group, with coefficients in a certain discrete Gn-module that is built from various homotopy fixed point spectra of the Morava module of X. This spectral sequence can be contrasted with the K(n)-local En-Adams spectral sequence for π∗(LK(n)(X)), whose E2-term is not known to always be equal to a continuous cohomology group.
For a derivation δ of a commutative Noetherian ${\mathbb C}$-algebra A, a homeomorphism is established between the prime spectrum of the Ore extension A[z;δ] and the Poisson prime spectrum of the polynomial algebra A[z] endowed with the Poisson bracket such that {A,A}=0 and {z,a}=δ(a) for all a ∈ A.
In this paper we consider a number of finiteness conditions for semigroups related to their ideal structure, and ask whether such conditions are preserved by sub- or supersemigroups with finite Rees or Green index. Specific properties under consideration include stability, $\mathcal{D}=\mathcal{J}$ and minimal conditions on ideals.
For the mapping class group of 3-manifold with respect to a Heegaard splitting, a simplicial complex is constructed such that its group of automorphisms is identified with the mapping class group.
We prove that for all n ≡ 13 or 37 (mod 72), there exists a biembedding of a pair of Steiner triple systems of order n in an orientable pseudosurface having precisely one regular pinch point of multiplicity 2.
We construct an algebraic almost closed 1-form with zero scheme not expressible (even locally) as the critical locus of a holomorphic function on a non-singular variety. The result answers a question of Behrend–Fantechi. We correct here an error in our paper (D. Maulik, R Pandharipande and R. P. Thomas, Curves on K3 surfaces and modular forms, J. Topol.3 (2010) 937–996. arXiv:1001.2719v3), where an incorrect construction with the same claimed properties was proposed.
In this paper, we use formal asymptotic arguments to understand the stability properties of equivariant solutions to the Landau–Lifshitz–Gilbert model for ferromagnets. We also analyse both the harmonic map heatflow and Schrödinger map flow limit cases. All asymptotic results are verified by detailed numerical experiments, as well as a robust topological argument. The key result of this paper is that blowup solutions to these problems are co-dimension one and hence both unstable and non-generic.
Given a (multi)digraph H, a digraph D is H-linked if every injective function ι:V(H) → V(D) can be extended to an H-subdivision. In this paper, we give sharp degree conditions that ensure a sufficiently large digraph D is H-linked for arbitrary H. The notion of an H-linked digraph extends the classes of m-linked, m-ordered and strongly m-connected digraphs.
First, we give sharp minimum semi-degree conditions for H-linkedness, extending results of Kühn and Osthus on m-linked and m-ordered digraphs. It is known that the minimum degree threshold for an undirected graph to be H-linked depends on a partition of the (undirected) graph H into three parts. Here, we show that the corresponding semi-degree threshold for H-linked digraphs depends on a partition of H into as many as nine parts.
We also determine sharp Ore–Woodall-type degree-sum conditions ensuring that a digraph D is H-linked for general H. As a corollary, we obtain (previously undetermined) sharp degree-sum conditions for m-linked and m-ordered digraphs.
Let Δ ≥ 2 be a fixed integer. We show that the random graph ${\mathcal{G}_{n,p}}$ with $p\gg (\log n/n)^{1/\Delta}$ is robust with respect to the containment of almost spanning bipartite graphs H with maximum degree Δ and sublinear bandwidth in the following sense: asymptotically almost surely, if an adversary deletes arbitrary edges from ${\mathcal{G}_{n,p}}$ in such a way that each vertex loses less than half of its neighbours, then the resulting graph still contains a copy of all such H.
In this paper, we prove that if $X$ is an infinite-dimensional real Hilbert space and $J: X\rightarrow \mathbb{R} $ is a sequentially weakly lower semicontinuous ${C}^{1} $ functional whose Gâteaux derivative is non-expansive, then there exists a closed ball $B$ in $X$ such that $(\mathrm{id} + {J}^{\prime } )(B)$ intersects every convex and dense subset of $X$.
We give a simple graph-theoretic proof of a classical result due to Nash-Williams on covering graphs by forests. Moreover, we derive a slight generalization of this statement where some edges are preassigned to distinct forests.
Consider a pseudogroup on $( \mathbb{C} , 0)$ generated by two local diffeomorphisms having analytic conjugacy classes a priori fixed in $\mathrm{Diff} \hspace{0.167em} ( \mathbb{C} , 0)$. We show that a generic pseudogroup as above is such that every point has a (possibly trivial) cyclic stabilizer. It also follows that these generic groups possess infinitely many hyperbolic orbits. This result possesses several applications to the topology of leaves of foliations, and we shall explicitly describe the case of nilpotent foliations associated to Arnold’s singularities of type ${A}^{2n+ 1} $.
We solve the equation ${x}^{a} + {x}^{b} + 1= {y}^{q} $ in positive integers $x, y, a, b$ and $q$ with $a\gt b$ and $q\geq 2$ coprime to $\phi (x)$. This requires a combination of a variety of techniques from effective Diophantine approximation, including lower bounds for linear forms in complex and $p$-adic logarithms, the hypergeometric method of Thue and Siegel applied $p$-adically, local methods, and the algorithmic resolution of Thue equations.
The study of geodesic flows on homogenous spaces is an area of research that has yielded some fascinating developments. This book, first published in 2000, focuses on many of these, and one of its highlights is an elementary and complete proof (due to Margulis and Dani) of Oppenheim's conjecture. Also included here: an exposition of Ratner's work on Raghunathan's conjectures; a complete proof of the Howe-Moore vanishing theorem for general semisimple Lie groups; a new treatment of Mautner's result on the geodesic flow of a Riemannian symmetric space; Mozes' result about mixing of all orders and the asymptotic distribution of lattice points in the hyperbolic plane; Ledrappier's example of a mixing action which is not a mixing of all orders. The treatment is as self-contained and elementary as possible. It should appeal to graduate students and researchers interested in dynamical systems, harmonic analysis, differential geometry, Lie theory and number theory.
We explore the effect of disjoining pressure on a thin film equation in the presence of a non-uniform body force, motivated by a model describing the reverse draining of a magnetic film. To this end, we use a combination of numerical investigations and analytical considerations. The disjoining pressure has a regularizing influence on the evolution of the system and appears to select a single steady-state solution for fixed height boundary conditions; this is in contrast with the existence of a continuum of locally attracting solutions that exist in the absence of disjoining pressure for the same boundary conditions. We numerically implement matched asymptotic expansions to construct equilibrium solutions and also investigate how they behave as the disjoining pressure is sent to zero. Finally, we consider the effect of the competition between forcing and disjoining pressure on the coarsening dynamics of the thin film for fixed contact angle boundary conditions.
