It is well known that the classical Gauss sum, normalized by the square-root number of terms, takes only finitely many values. If one restricts the range of summation to a subinterval, a much richer structure emerges. We prove a limit law for the value distribution of such incomplete Gauss sums. The limit distribution is given by the distribution of a certain family of periodic functions. Our results complement Oskolkov’s pointwise bounds for incomplete Gauss sums as well as the limit theorems for quadratic Weyl sums (theta sums) due to Jurkat and van Horne and the second author.

We describe a probability distribution on isomorphism classes of principally quasi-polarized $p$-divisible groups over a finite field $k$ of characteristic $p$ which can reasonably be thought of as a ‘uniform distribution’, and we compute the distribution of various statistics ($p$-corank, $a$-number, etc.) of $p$-divisible groups drawn from this distribution. It is then natural to ask to what extent the $p$-divisible groups attached to a randomly chosen hyperelliptic curve (respectively, curve; respectively, abelian variety) over $k$ are uniformly distributed in this sense. This heuristic is analogous to conjectures of Cohen–Lenstra type for $\text{char~} k\not = p$, in which case the random $p$-divisible group is defined by a random matrix recording the action of Frobenius. Extensive numerical investigation reveals some cases of agreement with the heuristic and some interesting discrepancies. For example, plane curves over ${\mathbf{F} }_{3} $ appear substantially less likely to be ordinary than hyperelliptic curves over ${\mathbf{F} }_{3} $.

Very few things are known about the curves that are at the boundary of the instability zones of symplectic twist maps. It is known that in general they have an irrational rotation number and that they cannot be KAM curves. We address the following questions. Can they be very smooth? Can they be non-${C}^{1} $?

Can they have a Diophantine or a Liouville rotation number? We give a partial answer for ${C}^{1} $ and ${C}^{2} $ twist maps.

In Theorem 1, we construct a ${C}^{2} $ symplectic twist map $f$ of the annulus that has an essential invariant curve $\Gamma $ such that

$\bullet $ $\Gamma $ is not differentiable;

$\bullet $ the dynamics of ${f}_{\vert \Gamma } $ is conjugated to the one of a Denjoy counter-example;

$\bullet $ $\Gamma $ is at the boundary of an instability zone for $f$.

Using the Hayashi connecting lemma, we prove in Theroem 2 that any symplectic twist map restricted to an essential invariant curve can be embedded as the dynamics along a boundary of an instability zone for some ${C}^{1} $ symplectic twist map.

We show that transcendental elements of the Brauer group of an algebraic surface can obstruct the Hasse principle. We construct a general $K 3$ surface $X$ of degree $2$ over $ \mathbb{Q} $, together with a 2-torsion Brauer class $\alpha $ that is unramified at every finite prime, but ramifies at real points of $X$. With motivation from Hodge theory, the pair $(X, \alpha )$ is constructed from a double cover of ${ \mathbb{P} }^{2} \times { \mathbb{P} }^{2} $ ramified over a hypersurface of bidegree $(2, 2)$.

Par exemple, nous montrons que des ${C}^{1} $-difféomorphismes ${f}_{1} , \ldots , {f}_{n} $ de ${ \mathbb{S} }^{2} $ suffisamment proches de l’identité, qui commutent deux à deux, et qui préservent une mesure de probabilité dont le support n’est pas réduit à un point, ont au moins deux points fixes communs.

Interpolation of spatial data is a very general mathematical problem with various applications. In geostatistics, it is assumed that the underlying structure of the data is a stochastic process which leads to an interpolation procedure known as kriging. This method is mathematically equivalent to kernel interpolation, a method used in numerical analysis for the same problem, but derived under completely different modelling assumptions. In this paper we present the two approaches and discuss their modelling assumptions, notions of optimality and different concepts to quantify the interpolation accuracy. Their relation is much closer than has been appreciated so far, and even results on convergence rates of kernel interpolants can be translated to the geostatistical framework. We sketch different answers obtained in the two fields concerning the issue of kernel misspecification, present some methods for kernel selection and discuss the scope of these methods with a data example from the computer experiments literature.

In his Tata Lecture Notes, Igusa conjectured the validity of a strong uniformity in the decay of complete exponential sums modulo powers of a prime number and determined by a homogeneous polynomial. This was proved for non-degenerate forms by Denef–Sperber and then by Cluckers for weighted homogeneous non-degenerate forms. In a recent preprint, Wright has proved this for degenerate binary forms. We give a different proof of Wright’s result that seems to be simpler and relies upon basic estimates for exponential sums mod $p$as well as a type of resolution of singularities with good reduction in the sense of Denef.

We prove bilinear estimates for the Schrödinger equation on 3D domains, with Dirichlet boundary conditions. On non-trapping domains, they match the ${ \mathbb{R} }^{3} $ case, while on bounded domains they match the generic boundaryless manifold case. We obtain, as an application, global well-posedness for the defocusing cubic NLS for data in ${ H}_{0}^{s} (\Omega )$, $1\lt s\leq 3$, with $\Omega $ any bounded domain with smooth boundary.

Let $\mathcal {O} \subset \mathbb {R}^d$ be a bounded domain of class $C^{1,1}$. In the Hilbert space $L_2(\mathcal {O};\mathbb {C}^n)$, we consider a matrix elliptic second order differential operator $\mathcal {A}_{D,\varepsilon }$ with the Dirichlet boundary condition. Here $\varepsilon \gt 0$ is the small parameter. The coefficients of the operator are periodic and depend on $\mathbf {x}/\varepsilon $. There are no regularity assumptions on the coefficients. A sharp order operator error estimate $\|\mathcal {A}_{D,\varepsilon }^{-1} - (\mathcal {A}_D^0)^{-1} \|_{L_2 \to L_2} \leq C \varepsilon $ is obtained. Here $\mathcal {A}^0_D$is the effective operator with constant coefficients and with the Dirichlet boundary condition.

A small value estimate is a statement providing necessary conditions for the existence of certain sequences of non-zero polynomials with integer coefficients taking small values at points of an algebraic group. Such statements are desirable for applications to transcendental number theory to analyze the outcome of the construction of an auxiliary function. In this paper, we present a result of this type for the product $ \mathbb {G}_{\mathrm {a}}\times \mathbb {G}_{\mathrm {m}}$ whose underlying group of complex points is $\mathbb {C}\times \mathbb {C}^{*}$. It shows that if a certain sequence of non-zero polynomials in $ \mathbb {Z}[X_1,X_2]$ takes small values at a point $(\xi ,\eta )$ together with their first derivatives with respect to the invariant derivation $\partial /\partial X_1 + X_2 (\partial /\partial X_2)$, then both $\xi $ and $\eta $ are algebraic over $\mathbb {Q}$. The precise statement involves growth conditions on the degree and norm of these polynomials as well as on the absolute values of their derivatives. It improves on a direct application of Philippon’s criterion for algebraic independence and compares favorably with constructions coming from Dirichlet’s box principle.

The spectral properties of a class of non-self-adjoint second-order elliptic operators with indefinite weight functions on unbounded domains Ω are investigated. It is shown, under an abstract regularity assumption, that the non-real spectrum of the associated elliptic operators in L2(Ω) is bounded. In the special case where Ω = ℝn decomposes into subdomains Ω+ and Ω− with smooth compact boundaries and the weight function is positive on Ω+ and negative on Ω−, it turns out that the non-real spectrum consists only of normal eigenvalues that can be characterized with a Dirichlet-to-Neumann map.

A partial Steiner (n,r,l)-system is an r-uniform hypergraph on n vertices in which every set of l vertices is contained in at most one edge. A partial Steiner (n,r,l)-system is complete if every set of l vertices is contained in exactly one edge. In a hypergraph , the independence number α() denotes the maximum size of a set of vertices in containing no edge. In this article we prove the following. Given integers r,l such that r ≥ 2l − 1 ≥ 3, we prove that there exists a partial Steiner (n,r,l)-system such that

We study a nonlinear elliptic problem defined in a bounded domain involving fractional powers of the Laplacian operator together with a concave—convex term. We completely characterize the range of parameters for which solutions of the problem exist and prove a multiplicity result. We also prove an associated trace inequality and some Liouville-type results.

Recently it was shown that if D is a bounded domain in ℂ whose boundary consists of a finite number of pairwise disjoint simple closed curves, then a continuous function f on bD extends holomorphically through D if and only if, for each g ∈ A(D) such that f + g has no zero on bD, the degree of f + g is non-negative (which, for these special domains, is equivalent to the fact that the change of argument of f + g along bD is non-negative). Here A(D) is the algebra of all continuous functions on D which are holomorphic on D. This fails to hold for general domains, and generalizing to more general domains presents a major problem that often requires a much larger class of functions g. It is shown that the preceding theorem still holds in the case when D is a bounded domain in ℂ such that D is finitely connected and such that D is equal to the interior of D.

We obtain a solution, the L∞-norm of which is greater than ⅓√3, to the semilinear system arising in the mathematical theory of superconductivity when the domain is a disc or the exterior of a disc in ℝ2. We obtain an estimate of the critical field for the arbitrary penetration depth and determine the critical field as the penetration depth goes to zero when the domain is a disc. We prove that the L∞-norm of the symmetric solutions on the inner boundary is greater than that of the outer boundary when the domain Ω is an annulus. Stability of the solutions is also studied.

We analyse the multiplicity of non-negative solutions for the critical concave—convex-type equation

where Ω is a bounded domain of ℝN, 1 < r < p and λ > 0, and μ is a real parameter. Combining minimization on the underlying Nehari manifold with energy estimates, we show that, under suitable conditions on a and b, three non-negative solutions may exist when λ is positive and sufficiently small and μ is in a right neighbourhood of μ1, the first weighted eigenvalue of the p-Laplacian. To the best of our knowledge, our multiplicity result is new, even in the semi-linear case p = 2.

By variational methods, for a type of Yamabe problem with boundary, we construct multi-peak solutions whose maxima tend to the boundary as the parameter tends to 0+ under certain assumptions. We also obtain the asymptotic behaviours of the solutions.

We consider the following equations involving negative exponent:

where p > 0. Under optimal conditions on the parameters α > −2 and p > 0, we prove the non-existence of finite Morse index solution on exterior domains or near the origin. We also prove an optimal regularity result for solutions with finite Morse index and isolated rupture at 0.
