We consider a processing system, composed of several parallel queues and a processor, which operates in a time-varying environment that fluctuates between various states or modes. The service rate at each queue depends on the processor bandwidth allocated to it, as well as the environment mode. Each queue is driven by a job traffic flow, which may also depend on the environment mode. Dynamic processor scheduling policies are investigated for maximizing the system throughput, by adapting to queue backlogs and the environment mode. We show that allocating the processor bandwidth to the queues, so as to maximize the projection of the service rate vector onto a linear function of the workload vector, can keep the system stable under the maximum possible traffic load. The analysis of the system dynamics is first done under very general assumptions, addressing rate stability and flow conservation on individual traffic and environment evolution traces. The connection with stochastic stability is later discussed for stationary and ergodic traffic and environment processes. Various extensions to feed-forward networks of such nodes, the multi-processor case, etc., are also discussed. The approach advances the methodology of trace-based modelling of queueing structures. Applications of the model include bandwidth allocation in wireless channels with fluctuating interference and allocation of switching bandwidth to traffic flows in communication networks with fluctuating congestion levels.
The maximum drawdown at time T of a random process on [0,T] can be defined informally as the largest drop from a peak to a trough. In this paper, we investigate the behaviour of this statistic for a Brownian motion with drift. In particular, we give an infinite series representation of its distribution and consider its expected value. When the drift is zero, we give an analytic expression for the expected value, and for nonzero drift, we give an infinite series representation. For all cases, we compute the limiting (T → ∞) behaviour, which can be logarithmic (for positive drift), square root (for zero drift) or linear (for negative drift).
We observe a sequence X1, X2,…, Xn of independent and identically distributed coordinatewise nonnegative d-dimensional random vectors. When a vector is observed it can either be selected or rejected but once made this decision is final. In each coordinate the sum of the selected vectors must not exceed a given constant. The problem is to find a selection policy that maximizes the expected number of selected vectors. For a general absolutely continuous distribution of the Xi we determine the maximal expected number of selected vectors asymptotically and give a selection policy which asymptotically achieves optimality. This problem raises a question closely related to the following problem. Given an absolutely continuous measure μ on Q = [0,1]d and a τ ∈ Q, find a set A of maximal measure μ(A) among all A ⊂ Q whose center of gravity lies below τ in all coordinates. We will show that a simplicial section {x ∈ Q | 〈x, θ〉 ≤ 1}, where θ ∈ ℝd, θ ≥ 0, satisfies a certain additional property, is a solution to this problem.
The aim of this paper is to analyze the probabilistic structure for a rather general class of bilinear models systematically. First, the sufficient and necessary conditions for stationarity are given with a concise expression. Then both the autocovariance function and the spectral density function are obtained. The Yule–Walker-type difference equations for autocovariances are derived by means of the spectral density function. Concerning the second-order probabilistic structure, the model is similar to an ARMA model. The third-order probabilistic structure for the model is discussed and a group of Yule–Walker-type difference equations for third-order cumulants are discovered.
We study estimation of the tail-decay parameter of the marginal distribution corresponding to a discrete-time, real-valued stationary stochastic process. Assuming that the underlying process is short-range dependent, we investigate properties of estimators of the tail-decay parameter which are based on the maximal extreme value of the process observed over a sampled time interval. These estimators only assume that the tail of the marginal distribution is roughly exponential, plus some modest ‘mixing’ conditions. Consistency properties of these estimators are established, as well as minimax convergence rates. We also provide some discussion on estimating the pre-exponent, when a more refined tail asymptotic is assumed. Properties of a certain moving-average variant of the extremal-based estimator are investigated as well. In passing, we also characterize the precise dependence (mixing) assumptions that support almost-sure limit theory for normalized extreme values and related first-passage times in stationary sequences.
This paper introduces a method of generating real harmonizable multifractional Lévy motions (RHMLMs). The simulation of these fields is closely related to that of infinitely divisible laws or Lévy processes. In the case where the control measure of the RHMLM is finite, generalized shot-noise series are used. An estimation of the error is also given. Otherwise, the RHMLM Xh is split into two independent RHMLMs, Xε,1 and Xε,2. More precisely, Xε,2 is an RHMLM whose control measure is finite. It can then be rewritten as a generalized shot-noise series. The asymptotic behaviour of Xε,1as ε → 0+ is further elaborated. Sufficient conditions to approximate Xε,1by a multifractional Brownian motion are given. The error rate in terms of Berry-Esseen bounds is then discussed. Finally, some examples of simulation are given.
This paper proposes a class of complete financial market models, the benchmark models, with security price processes that exhibit intensity-based jumps. The benchmark or reference unit is chosen to be the growth-optimal portfolio. Primary security account prices, when expressed in units of the benchmark, turn out to be local martingales. In the proposed framework an equivalent risk-neutral measure need not exist. Benchmarked fair derivative prices are obtained as conditional expectations of future benchmarked prices under the real-world probability measure. This concept of fair pricing generalizes the classical risk-neutral approach and the actuarial present-value pricing methodology.
We study the asymptotic properties of a minimal spanning tree formed by n points uniformly distributed in the unit square, where the minimality is amongst all rooted spanning trees with a direction of growth. We show that the number of branches from the root of this tree, the total length of these branches, and the length of the longest branch each converges weakly. This model is related to the study of record values in the theory of extreme-value statistics and this relation is used to obtain our results. The results also hold when the tree is formed from a Poisson point process of intensity n in the unit square.
In this paper, we study the on-line parameter estimation problem for a partially observable system subject to deterioration and random failure. The state of the system evolves according to a continuous-time homogeneous Markov process with a finite state space. The state of the system is hidden except for the failure state. When the system is operating, only the information obtained by condition monitoring, which is related to the working state of the system, is available. The condition monitoring observations are assumed to be in continuous range, so that no discretization is required. A recursive maximum likelihood (RML) algorithm is proposed for the on-line parameter estimation of the model. The new RML algorithm proposed in the paper is superior to other RML algorithms in the literature in that no projection is needed and no calculation of the gradient on the surface of the constraint manifolds is required. A numerical example is provided to illustrate the algorithm.

This paper investigates asymptotic behavior of the tail probabilities P(· > x) and the local probabilities P(x < · ≤ x + h) of the quantities and for n ≥ 1, and their randomized versions X(τ), Sτ and S(τ), where X0 = 0 by convention and h > 0 is arbitrarily fixed.
Let {Xk, k ≥ 1} be a sequence of independent, identically distributed nonnegative random variables with common distribution function F and finite expectation μ > 0. Under the assumption that the tail probability is consistently varying as x tends to infinity, this paper investigates precise large deviations for both the partial sums Sn and the random sums SN(t), where N(·) is a counting process independent of the sequence {Xk, k ≥ 1}. The obtained results improve some related classical ones. Applications to a risk model with negatively associated claim occurrences and to a risk model with a doubly stochastic arrival process (extended Cox process) are proposed.
The main result of the paper is a refinement of Xia's (1997) bound on the Kantorovich distance between distributions of a Bernoulli point process and an approximating Poisson process. In particular, we show that the distance between distributions of a Bernoulli point process and the Poisson process with the same mean measure has the order of the total variation distance between the laws of the total masses of these processes.
This paper introduces a new estimation technique for discretely observed diffusion processes. Transform functions are applied to transform the data to obtain good and easily calculated estimators of both the drift and diffusion coefficients. Consistency and asymptotic normality of the resulting estimators is investigated. Power transforms are used to estimate the parameters of affine diffusions, for which explicit estimators are obtained.
We review some urn and random-allocation models, mostly using probability generating function (PGF) methods. We begin by formulating a basic problem which can be thought of as either an urn or a random-allocation model; a PGF solution to it is outlined. When the compartments in the latter model are no longer homogeneous, the multivariate PGF can still be derived, though the algebra becomes cumbersome. Some results are given for the case where there are two types of compartment and for the case where there are two types of ball. Some comments are offered on the Frobenius–Harper property of PGFs.
Using the kernel representation of a continuous-time Lévy-driven ARMA (autoregressive moving average) process, we extend the class of nonnegative Lévy-driven Ornstein–Uhlenbeck processes employed by Barndorff-Nielsen and Shephard (2001) to allow for nonmonotone autocovariance functions. We also consider a class of fractionally integrated Lévy-driven continuous-time ARMA processes obtained by a simple modification of the kernel of the continuous-time ARMA process. Asymptotic properties of the kernel and of the autocovariance function are derived.
Using a known fact that a Galton–Watson branching process can be represented as an embedded random walk, together with a result of Heyde (1964), we first derive finite exponential moment results for the total number of descendants of an individual. We use this basic and simple result to prove analogous results for the population size at time t and the total number of descendants by time t in an age-dependent branching process. This has applications in justifying the interchange of expectation and derivative operators in simulation-based derivative estimation for generalized semi-Markov processes. Next, using the result of Heyde (1964), we show that, in a stable GI/GI/1 queue, the length of a busy period and the number of customers served in a busy period have finite exponential moments if and only if the service time does.
This paper has as its main theme the fitting in practice of the variance-gamma distribution, which allows for skewness, by moment methods. This fitting procedure allows for possible dependence of increments in log returns, while retaining their stationarity. It is intended as a step in a partial synthesis of some ideas of Madan, Carr and Chang (1998) and of Heyde (1999). Standard estimation and hypothesis-testing theory depends on a large sample of observations which are independently as well as identically distributed and consequently may give inappropriate conclusions in the presence of dependence.
The entropy score of an observed outcome that has been given a probability forecast p is defined to be –log p. If p is derived from a probability model and there is a background model for which the same outcome has probability π, then the log ratio log(p/π) is the probability gain, and its expected value the information gain, for that outcome. Such concepts are closely related to the likelihood of the model and its entropy rate. The relationships between these concepts are explored in the case that the outcomes in question are the occurrence or nonoccurrence of events in a stochastic point process. It is shown that, in such a context, the mean information gain per unit time, based on forecasts made at arbitrary discrete time intervals, is bounded above by the entropy rate of the point process. Two examples illustrate how the information gain may be related to realizations with a range of values of ‘predictability'.
It is a stylized fact that estimators in extreme-value theory suffer from serious bias. Moreover, graphical representations of extremal data often show erratic behaviour. In the statistical literature it is advised to use a Box–Cox transformation in order to make data more suitable for statistical analysis. We provide some of the theoretical background to see the effect of such transformations and to investigate under what circumstances they might be helpful.
