We prove that any increasing sequence of real numbers with average gap $1$ and Poisson pair correlations has some gap that is at least $3/2+10^{-9}$. This improves upon a result of Aistleitner, Blomer, and Radziwiłł.

We show that the twin-width of every $n$-vertex $d$-regular graph is at most $n^{\frac{d-2}{2d-2}+o(1)}$ for any fixed integer $d \geq 2$ and that almost all $d$-regular graphs attain this bound. More generally, we obtain bounds on the twin-width of sparse Erdős–Renyi and regular random graphs, complementing the bounds in the denser regime due to Ahn, Chakraborti, Hendrey, Kim, and Oum.

A random temporal graph is an Erdős-Rényi random graph $G(n,p)$, together with a random ordering of its edges. A path in the graph is called increasing if the edges on the path appear in increasing order. A set $S$ of vertices forms a temporal clique if for all $u,v \in S$, there is an increasing path from $u$ to $v$. Becker, Casteigts, Crescenzi, Kodric, Renken, Raskin and Zamaraev [(2023) Giant components in random temporal graphs. arXiv,2205.14888] proved that if $p=c\log n/n$ for $c\gt 1$, then, with high probability, there is a temporal clique of size $n-o(n)$. On the other hand, for $c\lt 1$, with high probability, the largest temporal clique is of size $o(n)$. In this note, we improve the latter bound by showing that, for $c\lt 1$, the largest temporal clique is of constant size with high probability.

A tantalizing open problem, posed independently by Stiebitz in 1995 and by Alon in 1996 and again in 2006, asks whether for every pair of integers $s,t \ge 1$ there exists a finite number $F(s,t)$ such that the vertex set of every digraph of minimum out-degree at least $F(s,t)$ can be partitioned into non-empty parts $A$ and $B$ such that the subdigraphs induced on $A$ and $B$ have minimum out-degree at least $s$ and $t$, respectively.

In this short note, we prove that if $F(2,2)$ exists, then all the numbers $F(s,t)$ with $s,t\ge 1$ exist and satisfy $F(s,t)=\Theta (s+t)$. In consequence, the problem of Alon and Stiebitz reduces to the case $s=t=2$. Moreover, the numbers $F(s,t)$ with $s,t \ge 2$ either all exist and grow linearly, or all of them do not exist.

Given an $n\times n$ symmetric matrix $W\in [0,1]^{[n]\times [n]}$, let ${\mathcal G}(n,W)$ be the random graph obtained by independently including each edge $jk\in \binom{[n]}{2}$ with probability $W_{jk}=W_{kj}$. Given a degree sequence $\textbf{d}=(d_1,\ldots, d_n)$, let ${\mathcal G}(n,\textbf{d})$ denote a uniformly random graph with degree sequence $\textbf{d}$. We couple ${\mathcal G}(n,W)$ and ${\mathcal G}(n,\textbf{d})$ together so that asymptotically almost surely ${\mathcal G}(n,W)$ is a subgraph of ${\mathcal G}(n,\textbf{d})$, where $W$ is some function of $\textbf{d}$. Let $\Delta (\textbf{d})$ denote the maximum degree in $\textbf{d}$. Our coupling result is optimal when $\Delta (\textbf{d})^2\ll \|\textbf{d}\|_1$, that is, $W_{ij}$ is asymptotic to ${\mathbb P}(ij\in{\mathcal G}(n,\textbf{d}))$ for every $i,j\in [n]$. We also have coupling results for $\textbf{d}$ that are not constrained by the condition $\Delta (\textbf{d})^2\ll \|\textbf{d}\|_1$. For such $\textbf{d}$ our coupling result is still close to optimal, in the sense that $W_{ij}$ is asymptotic to ${\mathbb P}(ij\in{\mathcal G}(n,\textbf{d}))$ for most pairs $ij\in \binom{[n]}{2}$.

In this paper, we study discrepancy questions for spanning subgraphs of $k$-uniform hypergraphs. Our main result is that, for any integers $k \ge 3$ and $r \ge 2$, any $r$-colouring of the edges of a $k$-uniform $n$-vertex hypergraph $G$ with minimum $(k-1)$-degree $\delta (G) \ge (1/2+o(1))n$ contains a tight Hamilton cycle with high discrepancy, that is, with at least $n/r+\Omega (n)$ edges of one colour. The minimum degree condition is asymptotically best possible and our theorem also implies a corresponding result for perfect matchings. Our tools combine various structural techniques such as Turán-type problems and hypergraph shadows with probabilistic techniques such as random walks and the nibble method. We also propose several intriguing problems for future research.

We initiate a study of large deviations for block model random graphs in the dense regime. Following [14], we establish an LDP for dense block models, viewed as random graphons. As an application of our result, we study upper tail large deviations for homomorphism densities of regular graphs. We identify the existence of a ‘symmetric’ phase, where the graph, conditioned on the rare event, looks like a block model with the same block sizes as the generating graphon. In specific examples, we also identify the existence of a ‘symmetry breaking’ regime, where the conditional structure is not a block model with compatible dimensions. This identifies a ‘reentrant phase transition’ phenomenon for this problem – analogous to one established for Erdős–Rényi random graphs [13, 14]. Finally, extending the analysis of [34], we identify the precise boundary between the symmetry and symmetry breaking regimes for homomorphism densities of regular graphs and the operator norm on Erdős–Rényi bipartite graphs.

A graph $G$ is $q$-Ramsey for another graph $H$ if in any $q$-edge-colouring of $G$ there is a monochromatic copy of $H$, and the classic Ramsey problem asks for the minimum number of vertices in such a graph. This was broadened in the seminal work of Burr, Erdős, and Lovász to the investigation of other extremal parameters of Ramsey graphs, including the minimum degree.

It is not hard to see that if $G$ is minimally $q$-Ramsey for $H$ we must have $\delta (G) \ge q(\delta (H) - 1) + 1$, and we say that a graph $H$ is $q$-Ramsey simple if this bound can be attained. Grinshpun showed that this is typical of rather sparse graphs, proving that the random graph $G(n,p)$ is almost surely $2$-Ramsey simple when $\frac{\log n}{n} \ll p \ll n^{-2/3}$. In this paper, we explore this question further, asking for which pairs $p = p(n)$ and $q = q(n,p)$ we can expect $G(n,p)$ to be $q$-Ramsey simple.

We first extend Grinshpun’s result by showing that $G(n,p)$ is not just $2$-Ramsey simple, but is in fact $q$-Ramsey simple for any $q = q(n)$, provided $p \ll n^{-1}$ or $\frac{\log n}{n} \ll p \ll n^{-2/3}$. Next, when $p \gg \left ( \frac{\log n}{n} \right )^{1/2}$, we find that $G(n,p)$ is not $q$-Ramsey simple for any $q \ge 2$. Finally, we uncover some interesting behaviour for intermediate edge probabilities. When $n^{-2/3} \ll p \ll n^{-1/2}$, we find that there is some finite threshold $\tilde{q} = \tilde{q}(H)$, depending on the structure of the instance $H \sim G(n,p)$ of the random graph, such that $H$ is $q$-Ramsey simple if and only if $q \le \tilde{q}$. Aside from a couple of logarithmic factors, this resolves the qualitative nature of the Ramsey simplicity of the random graph over the full spectrum of edge probabilities.

The walk matrix associated to an $n\times n$ integer matrix $\mathbf{X}$ and an integer vector $b$ is defined by ${\mathbf{W}} \,:\!=\, (b,{\mathbf{X}} b,\ldots, {\mathbf{X}}^{n-1}b)$. We study limiting laws for the cokernel of $\mathbf{W}$ in the scenario where $\mathbf{X}$ is a random matrix with independent entries and $b$ is deterministic. Our first main result provides a formula for the distribution of the $p^m$-torsion part of the cokernel, as a group, when $\mathbf{X}$ has independent entries from a specific distribution. The second main result relaxes the distributional assumption and concerns the ${\mathbb{Z}}[x]$-module structure.

The motivation for this work arises from an open problem in spectral graph theory, which asks to show that random graphs are often determined up to isomorphism by their (generalised) spectrum. Sufficient conditions for generalised spectral determinacy can, namely, be stated in terms of the cokernel of a walk matrix. Extensions of our results could potentially be used to determine how often those conditions are satisfied. Some remaining challenges for such extensions are outlined in the paper.

For a given graph $H$, we say that a graph $G$ has a perfect $H$-subdivision tiling if $G$ contains a collection of vertex-disjoint subdivisions of $H$ covering all vertices of $G.$ Let $\delta _{\mathrm {sub}}(n, H)$ be the smallest integer $k$ such that any $n$-vertex graph $G$ with minimum degree at least $k$ has a perfect $H$-subdivision tiling. For every graph $H$, we asymptotically determined the value of $\delta _{\mathrm {sub}}(n, H)$. More precisely, for every graph $H$ with at least one edge, there is an integer $\mathrm {hcf}_{\xi }(H)$ and a constant $1 \lt \xi ^*(H)\leq 2$ that can be explicitly determined by structural properties of $H$ such that $\delta _{\mathrm {sub}}(n, H) = \left (1 - \frac {1}{\xi ^*(H)} + o(1) \right )n$ holds for all $n$ and $H$ unless $\mathrm {hcf}_{\xi }(H) = 2$ and $n$ is odd. When $\mathrm {hcf}_{\xi }(H) = 2$ and $n$ is odd, then we show that $\delta _{\mathrm {sub}}(n, H) = \left (\frac {1}{2} + o(1) \right )n$.

Let $r$ be any positive integer. We prove that for every sufficiently large $k$ there exists a $k$-chromatic vertex-critical graph $G$ such that $\chi (G-R)=k$ for every set $R \subseteq E(G)$ with $|R|\le r$. This partially solves a problem posed by Erdős in 1985, who asked whether the above statement holds for $k \ge 4$.

We show that on every affine Weyl group natural random walks are noise sensitive in total variation.

We consider the hard-core model on a finite square grid graph with stochastic Glauber dynamics parametrized by the inverse temperature $\beta$. We investigate how the transition between its two maximum-occupancy configurations takes place in the low-temperature regime $\beta \to \infty$ in the case of periodic boundary conditions. The hard-core constraints and the grid symmetry make the structure of the critical configurations for this transition, also known as essential saddles, very rich and complex. We provide a comprehensive geometrical characterization of these configurations that together constitute a bottleneck for the Glauber dynamics in the low-temperature limit. In particular, we develop a novel isoperimetric inequality for hard-core configurations with a fixed number of particles and show how the essential saddles are characterized not only by the number of particles but also their geometry.

Let $T$ be a tree on $t$ vertices. We prove that for every positive integer $k$ and every graph $G$, either $G$ contains $k$ pairwise vertex-disjoint subgraphs each having a $T$ minor, or there exists a set $X$ of at most $t(k-1)$ vertices of $G$ such that $G-X$ has no $T$ minor. The bound on the size of $X$ is best possible and improves on an earlier $f(t)k$ bound proved by Fiorini, Joret, and Wood (2013) with some fast-growing function $f(t)$. Moreover, our proof is short and simple.

We study several basic problems about colouring the $p$-random subgraph $G_p$ of an arbitrary graph $G$, focusing primarily on the chromatic number and colouring number of $G_p$. In particular, we show that there exist infinitely many $k$-regular graphs $G$ for which the colouring number (i.e., degeneracy) of $G_{1/2}$ is at most $k/3 + o(k)$ with high probability, thus disproving the natural prediction that such random graphs must have colouring number at least $k/2 - o(k)$.

We show that every $(n,d,\lambda )$-graph contains a Hamilton cycle for sufficiently large $n$, assuming that $d\geq \log ^{6}n$ and $\lambda \leq cd$, where $c=\frac {1}{70000}$. This significantly improves a recent result of Glock, Correia, and Sudakov, who obtained a similar result for $d$ that grows polynomially with $n$. The proof is based on a new result regarding the second largest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of a subgraph induced by a random subset of vertices, combined with a recent result on connecting designated pairs of vertices by vertex-disjoint paths in $(n,d,\lambda )$-graphs. We believe that the former result is of independent interest and will have further applications.
