Our main result is the $\mathbb {\mathcal {C}}^{0}$-rigidity of the area spectrum and the Maslov class of Lagrangian submanifolds. This relies on the existence of punctured pseudoholomorphic disks in cotangent bundles with boundary on the zero section, whose boundaries represent any integral homology class. We discuss further applications of these punctured disks in symplectic geometry.

We observe a fundamental relationship between Steenrod operations and the Artin–Schreier morphism. We use Steenrod's construction, together with some new geometry related to the affine Grassmannian, to prove that the quantum Coulomb branch is a Frobenius-constant quantization. We also demonstrate the corresponding result for the $K$-theoretic version of the quantum Coulomb branch. At the end of the paper, we investigate what our ideas produce on the categorical level. We find that they yield, after a little fiddling, a construction which corresponds, under the geometric Satake equivalence, to the Frobenius twist functor for representations of the Langlands dual group. We also describe the unfiddled answer, conditional on a conjectural ‘modular derived Satake’, and, though it is more complicated to state, it is in our opinion just as neat and even more compelling.

We develop a dimension theory for coadmissible $\widehat {\mathcal {D}}$-modules on rigid analytic spaces and study those which are of minimal dimension, in analogy to the theory of holonomic $\mathcal {D}$-modules in the algebraic setting. We discuss a number of pathologies contained in this subcategory (modules of infinite length, infinite-dimensional fibres). We prove stability results for closed immersions and the duality functor, and show that all higher direct images of integrable connections restricted to a Zariski open subspace are coadmissible of minimal dimension. It follows that the local cohomology sheaves $\underline {H}^{i}_Z(\mathcal {M})$ with support in a closed analytic subset $Z$ of $X$ are also coadmissible of minimal dimension for any integrable connection $\mathcal {M}$ on $X$.

Consider the algebraic function $\Phi _{g,n}$ that assigns to a general $g$-dimensional abelian variety an $n$-torsion point. A question first posed by Klein asks: What is the minimal $d$ such that, after a rational change of variables, the function $\Phi _{g,n}$ can be written as an algebraic function of $d$ variables? Using techniques from the deformation theory of $p$-divisible groups and finite flat group schemes, we answer this question by computing the essential dimension and $p$-dimension of congruence covers of the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties. We apply this result to compute the essential $p$-dimension of congruence covers of the moduli space of genus $g$ curves, as well as its hyperelliptic locus, and of certain locally symmetric varieties. These results include cases where the locally symmetric variety $M$ is proper. As far as we know, these are the first examples of nontrivial lower bounds on the essential dimension of an unramified, nonabelian covering of a proper algebraic variety.

In this paper we give an interpretation, in terms of derived de Rham complexes, of Scholze's de Rham period sheaf and Tan and Tong's crystalline period sheaf.

We compare the $K$-theory stable bases of the Springer resolution associated to different affine Weyl alcoves. We prove that (up to relabelling) the change of alcoves operators are given by the Demazure–Lusztig operators in the affine Hecke algebra. We then show that these bases are categorified by the Verma modules of the Lie algebra, under the localization of Lie algebras in positive characteristic of Bezrukavnikov, Mirković, and Rumynin. As an application, we prove that the wall-crossing matrices of the $K$-theory stable bases coincide with the monodromy matrices of the quantum cohomology of the Springer resolution.

We give a corrected version of Theorem 3, Lemma 4, and Proposition 9 in the above-mentioned paper, which are incorrect as stated (as was pointed out by O. Gabber).

The trace of the $n$-framed surgery on a knot in $S^{3}$ is a 4-manifold homotopy equivalent to the 2-sphere. We characterise when a generator of the second homotopy group of such a manifold can be realised by a locally flat embedded $2$-sphere whose complement has abelian fundamental group. Our characterisation is in terms of classical and computable $3$-dimensional knot invariants. For each $n$, this provides conditions that imply a knot is topologically $n$-shake slice, directly analogous to the result of Freedman and Quinn that a knot with trivial Alexander polynomial is topologically slice.

For a Coxeter system and a representation $V$ of this Coxeter system, Soergel defined a category which is now called the category of Soergel bimodules and proved that this gives a categorification of the Hecke algebra when $V$ is reflection faithful. Elias and Williamson defined another category when $V$ is not reflection faithful and proved that this category is equivalent to the category of Soergel bimodules when $V$ is reflection faithful. Moreover, they proved the categorification theorem for their category with fewer assumptions on $V$. In this paper, we give a bimodule description of the Elias–Williamson category and re-prove the categorification theorem.

Let $G$ be a split connected reductive group over a finite field of characteristic $p > 2$ such that $G_\text {der}$ is absolutely almost simple. We give a geometric construction of perverse $\mathbb {F}_p$-sheaves on the Iwahori affine flag variety of $G$ which are central with respect to the convolution product. We deduce an explicit formula for an isomorphism from the spherical mod $p$ Hecke algebra to the center of the Iwahori mod $p$ Hecke algebra. We also give a formula for the central integral Bernstein elements in the Iwahori mod $p$ Hecke algebra. To accomplish these goals we construct a nearby cycles functor for perverse $\mathbb {F}_p$-sheaves and we use Frobenius splitting techniques to prove some properties of this functor. We also prove that certain equal characteristic analogues of local models of Shimura varieties are strongly $F$-regular, and hence they are $F$-rational and have pseudo-rational singularities.

We prove that a formula for the ‘pluricanonical’ double ramification cycle proposed by Janda, Pandharipande, Pixton, Zvonkine, and the second-named author is in fact the class of a cycle constructed geometrically by the first-named author. Our proof proceeds by a detailed explicit analysis of the deformation theory of the double ramification cycle, both to first and to higher order.

We establish some cohomological bounds in $D$-module theory that are known in the holonomic case and folklore in general. The method rests on a generalization of the $b$-function lemma for non-holonomic $D$-modules.

We show that the additive higher Chow groups of regular schemes over a field induce a Zariski sheaf of pro-differential graded algebras, the Milnor range of which is isomorphic to the Zariski sheaf of big de Rham–Witt complexes. This provides an explicit cycle-theoretic description of the big de Rham–Witt sheaves. Several applications are derived.

We give many examples of algebraic actions which are factors of Bernoulli shifts. These include certain harmonic models over left-orderable groups of large enough growth, as well as algebraic actions associated to certain lopsided elements in any left-orderable group. For many of our examples, the acting group is amenable so these actions are Bernoulli (and not just a factor of a Bernoulli), but there is no obvious Bernoulli partition.

In his work on modularity theorems, Wiles proved a numerical criterion for a map of rings $R\to T$ to be an isomorphism of complete intersections. He used this to show that certain deformation rings and Hecke algebras associated to a mod $p$ Galois representation at non-minimal level are isomorphic and complete intersections, provided the same is true at minimal level. In this paper we study Hecke algebras acting on cohomology of Shimura curves arising from maximal orders in indefinite quaternion algebras over the rationals localized at a semistable irreducible mod $p$ Galois representation $\bar {\rho }$. If $\bar {\rho }$ is scalar at some primes dividing the discriminant of the quaternion algebra, then the Hecke algebra is still isomorphic to the deformation ring, but is not a complete intersection, or even Gorenstein, so the Wiles numerical criterion cannot apply. We consider a weight-2 newform $f$ which contributes to the cohomology of the Shimura curve and gives rise to an augmentation $\lambda _f$ of the Hecke algebra. We quantify the failure of the Wiles numerical criterion at $\lambda _f$ by computing the associated Wiles defect purely in terms of the local behavior at primes dividing the discriminant of the global Galois representation $\rho _f$ which $f$ gives rise to by the Eichler–Shimura construction. One of the main tools used in the proof is Taylor–Wiles–Kisin patching.

We prove a necessary and sufficient condition for the graded algebra of automorphic forms on a symmetric domain of type IV being free. From the necessary condition, we derive a classification result. Let $M$ be an even lattice of signature $(2,n)$ splitting two hyperbolic planes. Suppose $\Gamma$ is a subgroup of the integral orthogonal group of $M$ containing the discriminant kernel. It is proved that there are exactly 26 groups $\Gamma$ such that the space of modular forms for $\Gamma$ is a free algebra. Using the sufficient condition, we recover some well-known results.
