Let $C\; : \;y^2=f(x)$ be a hyperelliptic curve of genus $g\geq 1$, defined over a complete discretely valued field $K$, with ring of integers $O_K$. Under certain conditions on $C$, mild when residue characteristic is not $2$, we explicitly construct the minimal regular model with normal crossings $\mathcal{C}/O_K$ of $C$. In the same setting we determine a basis of integral differentials of $C$, that is an $O_K$-basis for the global sections of the relative dualising sheaf $\omega _{\mathcal{C}/O_K}$.

Generalizing a result of Wulf-Dieter Geyer in his thesis, we prove that if $K$ is a finitely generated extension of transcendence degree $r$ of a global field and $A$ is a closed abelian subgroup of $\textrm{Gal}(K)$, then ${\mathrm{rank}}(A)\le r+1$. Moreover, if $\mathrm{char}(K)=0$, then ${\hat{\mathbb{Z}}}^{r+1}$ is isomorphic to a closed subgroup of $\textrm{Gal}(K)$.

We prove new results concerning the additive Galois module structure of wildly ramified non-abelian extensions $K/\mathbb{Q}$ with Galois group isomorphic to $A_4$, $S_4$, $A_5$, and dihedral groups of order $2p^n$ for certain prime powers $p^n$. In particular, when $K/\mathbb{Q}$ is a Galois extension with Galois group $G$ isomorphic to $A_4$, $S_4$ or $A_5$, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_{K}$ to be free over its associated order in the rational group algebra $\mathbb{Q}[G]$.

Given a group $G$ and an integer $n\geq 0$, we consider the family ${\mathcal F}_n$ of all virtually abelian subgroups of $G$ of $\textrm{rank}$ at most $n$. In this article, we prove that for each $n\ge 2$ the Bredon cohomology, with respect to the family ${\mathcal F}_n$, of a free abelian group with $\textrm{rank}$ $k \gt n$ is nontrivial in dimension $k+n$; this answers a question of Corob Cook et al. (Homology Homotopy Appl. 19(2) (2017), 83–87, Question 2.7). As an application, we compute the minimal dimension of a classifying space for the family ${\mathcal F}_n$ for braid groups, right-angled Artin groups, and graphs of groups whose vertex groups are infinite finitely generated virtually abelian groups, for all $n\ge 2$. The main tools that we use are the Mayer–Vietoris sequence for Bredon cohomology, Bass–Serre theory, and the Lück–Weiermann construction.

We show that continuous group homomorphisms between unitary groups of unital C*-algebras induce maps between spaces of continuous real-valued affine functions on the trace simplices. Under certain $K$-theoretic regularity conditions, these maps can be seen to commute with the pairing between $K_0$ and traces. If the homomorphism is contractive and sends the unit circle to the unit circle, the map between spaces of continuous real-valued affine functions can further be shown to be unital and positive (up to a minus sign).

Let $n$ be an integer congruent to $0$ or $3$ modulo $4$. Under the assumption of the ABC conjecture, we prove that, given any integer $m$ fulfilling only a certain coprimeness condition, there exist infinitely many imaginary quadratic fields having an everywhere unramified Galois extension of group $A_n \times C_m$. The same result is obtained unconditionally in special cases.

We find closed formulas for arbitrarily high mixed moments of characteristic polynomials of the Alternative Circular Unitary Ensemble, as well as closed formulas for the averages of ratios of characteristic polynomials in this ensemble. A comparison is made to analogous results for the Circular Unitary Ensemble. Both moments and ratios are studied via symmetric function theory and a general formula of Borodin-Olshanski-Strahov.

For a principal ideal domain $A$, the Latimer–MacDuffee correspondence sets up a bijection between the similarity classes of matrices in $\textrm{M}_{n}(A)$ with irreducible characteristic polynomial $f(x)$ and the ideal classes of the order $A[x]/(f(x))$. We prove that when $A[x]/(f(x))$ is maximal (i.e. integrally closed, i.e. a Dedekind domain), then every similarity class contains a representative that is, in a sense, close to being a companion matrix. The first step in the proof is to show that any similarity class corresponding to an ideal (not necessarily prime) of degree one contains a representative of the desired form. The second step is a previously unpublished result due to Lenstra that implies that when $A[x]/(f(x))$ is maximal, every ideal class contains an ideal of degree one.

Consider the following classes of pairs consisting of a group and a finite collection of subgroups:

• • $ \mathcal{D}= \left \{ (G,\mathcal{H}) \mid \text{the relative Dehn function of $(G,\mathcal{H})$ is well-defined} \right \} .$

Let $G$ be a group that splits as a finite graph of groups such that each vertex group $G_v$ is assigned a finite collection of subgroups $\mathcal{H}_v$, and each edge group $G_e$ is conjugate to a subgroup of some $H\in \mathcal{H}_v$ if $e$ is adjacent to $v$. Then there is a finite collection of subgroups $\mathcal{H}$ of $G$ such that

1. 1. If each $(G_v, \mathcal{H}_v)$ is in $\mathcal C$, then $(G,\mathcal{H})$ is in $\mathcal C$.

2. 2. If each $(G_v, \mathcal{H}_v)$ is in $\mathcal D$, then $(G,\mathcal{H})$ is in $\mathcal D$.

3. 3. For any vertex $v$ and for any $g\in G_v$, the element $g$ is conjugate to an element in some $Q\in \mathcal{H}_v$ if and only if $g$ is conjugate to an element in some $H\in \mathcal{H}$.

That edge groups are not assumed to be finitely generated and that they do not necessarily belong to a peripheral collection of subgroups of an adjacent vertex are the main differences between this work and previous results in the literature. The method of proof provides lower and upper bounds of the relative Dehn functions in terms of the relative Dehn functions of the vertex groups. These bounds generalize and improve analogous results in the literature.

This paper studies the structure and preservational properties of lower bounded HNN extensions of inverse semigroups, as introduced by Jajcayová. We show that if $S^* = [ S;\; U_1,U_2;\; \phi ]$ is a lower bounded HNN extension then the maximal subgroups of $S^*$ may be described using Bass-Serre theory, as the fundamental groups of certain graphs of groups defined from the $\mathcal{D}$-classes of $S$, $U_1$ and $U_2$. We then obtain a number of results concerning when inverse semigroup properties are preserved under the HNN extension construction. The properties considered are completely semisimpleness, having finite $\mathcal{R}$-classes, residual finiteness, being $E$-unitary, and $0$-$E$-unitary. Examples are given, such as an HNN extension of a polycylic inverse monoid.

In this work, we study the Humbert-Edge curves of type 5, defined as a complete intersection of four diagonal quadrics in ${\mathbb{P}}^5$. We characterize them using Kummer surfaces, and using the geometry of these surfaces, we construct some vanishing thetanulls on such curves. In addition, we describe an argument to give an isomorphism between the moduli space of Humbert-Edge curves of type 5 and the moduli space of hyperelliptic curves of genus 2, and we show how this argument can be generalized to state an isomorphism between the moduli space of hyperelliptic curves of genus $g=\frac{n-1}{2}$ and the moduli space of Humbert-Edge curves of type $n\geq 5$ where $n$ is an odd number.

This paper is devoted to the study of generalized tilting theory of functor categories in different levels. First, we extend Miyashita’s proof (Math Z 193:113–146,1986) of the generalized Brenner–Butler theorem to arbitrary functor categories $\mathop{\textrm{Mod}}\nolimits\!(\mathcal{C})$ with $\mathcal{C}$ an annuli variety. Second, a hereditary and complete cotorsion pair generated by a generalized tilting subcategory $\mathcal{T}$ of $\mathop{\textrm{Mod}}\nolimits \!(\mathcal{C})$ is constructed. Some applications of these two results include the equivalence of Grothendieck groups $K_0(\mathcal{C})$ and $K_0(\mathcal{T})$, the existences of a new abelian model structure on the category of complexes $\mathop{\textrm{C}}\nolimits \!(\!\mathop{\textrm{Mod}}\nolimits\!(\mathcal{C}))$, and a t-structure on the derived category $\mathop{\textrm{D}}\nolimits \!(\!\mathop{\textrm{Mod}}\nolimits \!(\mathcal{C}))$.

Let $p \;:\; Y \to X$ be a finite, regular cover of finite graphs with associated deck group $G$, and consider the first homology $H_1(Y;\;{\mathbb{C}})$ of the cover as a $G$-representation. The main contribution of this article is to broaden the correspondence and dictionary between the representation theory of the deck group $G$ on the one hand and topological properties of homology classes in $H_1(Y;\;{\mathbb{C}})$ on the other hand. We do so by studying certain subrepresentations in the $G$-representation $H_1(Y;\;{\mathbb{C}})$.

The homology class of a lift of a primitive element in $\pi _1(X)$ spans an induced subrepresentation in $H_1(Y;\;{\mathbb{C}})$, and we show that this property is never sufficient to characterize such homology classes if $G$ is Abelian. We study $H_1^{\textrm{comm}}(Y;\;{\mathbb{C}}) \leq H_1(Y;\;{\mathbb{C}})$—the subrepresentation spanned by homology classes of lifts of commutators of primitive elements in $\pi _1(X)$. Concretely, we prove that the span of such a homology class is isomorphic to the quotient of two induced representations. Furthermore, we construct examples of finite covers with $H_1^{\textrm{comm}}(Y;\;{\mathbb{C}}) \neq \ker\!(p_*)$.

We study a family of finitely generated residually finite small-cancellation groups. These groups are quotients of $F_2$ depending on a subset $S$ of positive integers. Varying $S$ yields continuously many groups up to quasi-isometry.

A theorem of Brady and Meier states that a right-angled Artin group is a duality group if and only if the flag complex of the defining graph is Cohen–Macaulay. We use this to give an example of a RAAG with the property that its outer automorphism group is not a virtual duality group. This gives a partial answer to a question of Vogtmann. In an appendix, Brück describes how he used a computer-assisted search to find further examples.

John Rognes developed a notion of Galois extension of commutative ring spectra, and this includes a criterion for identifying an extension as unramified. Ramification for commutative ring spectra can be detected by relative topological Hochschild homology and by topological André–Quillen homology. In the classical algebraic context, it is important to distinguish between tame and wild ramification. Noether’s theorem characterizes tame ramification in terms of a normal basis, and tame ramification can also be detected via the surjectivity of the trace map. For commutative ring spectra, we suggest to study the Tate construction as a suitable analog. It tells us at which integral primes there is tame or wild ramification, and we determine its homotopy type in examples in the context of topological K-theory and topological modular forms.

Let $D$ be a division algebra, finite-dimensional over its center, and $R=D[t;\;\sigma,\delta ]$ a skew polynomial ring.

Using skew polynomials $f\in R$, we construct division algebras and maximum rank distance codes consisting of matrices with entries in a noncommutative division algebra or field. These include Jha Johnson semifields, and the classes of classical and twisted Gabidulin codes constructed by Sheekey.

We present a combinatorial proof for the existence of the sign-refined grid homology in lens spaces and a self-contained proof that $\partial _{\mathbb{Z}}^2 = 0$. We also present a Sage programme that computes $\widehat{\mathrm{GH}} (L(p,q),K;\mathbb{Z})$ and provide empirical evidence supporting the absence of torsion in these groups.

Using totally symmetric sets, Chudnovsky–Kordek–Li–Partin gave a superexponential lower bound on the cardinality of non-abelian finite quotients of the braid group. In this paper, we develop new techniques using multiple totally symmetric sets to count elements in non-abelian finite quotients of the braid group. Using these techniques, we improve the lower bound found by Chudnovsky et al. We exhibit totally symmetric sets in the virtual and welded braid groups and use our new techniques to find superexponential bounds for the finite quotients of the virtual and welded braid groups.

Erdős considered the second moment of the gap-counting function of prime divisors in 1946 and proved an upper bound that is not of the right order of magnitude. We prove asymptotics for all moments. Furthermore, we prove a generalisation stating that the gaps between primes p for which there is no $\mathbb{Q}_p$-point on a random variety are Poisson distributed.
