For $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}$ an algebraic integer of any degree $n\geqslant 2$, it is known that the discriminants of the orders $\mathbb{Z}[\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}^{k}]$ go to infinity as $k$ goes to infinity. We give a short proof of this result.

We prove the existence of a smooth and non-degenerate curve $X\subset \mathbb{P}^{n}$, $n\geqslant 8$, with $\deg (X)=d$, $p_{a}(X)=g$, $h^{1}(N_{X}(-1))=0$, and general moduli for all $(d,g,n)$ such that $d\geqslant (n-3)\lceil g/2\rceil +n+3$. It was proved by C. Walter that, for $n\geqslant 4$, the inequality $2d\geqslant (n-3)g+4$ is a necessary condition for the existence of a curve with $h^{1}(N_{X}(-1))=0$.

In this paper, we consider the problem of characterizing positive definite functions on compact two-point homogeneous spaces cross locally compact abelian groups. For a locally compact abelian group $G$ with dual group $\widehat{G}$, a compact two-point homogeneous space $\mathbb{H}$ with normalized geodesic distance $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}$ and a profile function $\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}:[-1,1]\times G\rightarrow \mathbb{C}$ satisfying certain continuity and integrability assumptions, we show that the positive definiteness of the kernel $((x,u),(y,v))\in (\mathbb{H}\times G)^{2}\mapsto \unicode[STIX]{x1D719}(\cos \unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}(x,y),uv^{-1})$ is equivalent to the positive definiteness of the Fourier transformed kernels $(x,y)\in \mathbb{H}^{2}\mapsto \widehat{\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}}_{\cos \unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}(x,y)}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FE})$, $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FE}\in \widehat{G}$, where $\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}_{t}(u)=\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}(t,u)$, $u\in G$. We also provide some results on the strict positive definiteness of the kernel.

We prove a version of the ergodic theorem for an action of an amenable group, where a Følner sequence need not be tempered. Instead, it is assumed that a function satisfies certain mixing conditions.

In this manuscript, we generalize Lewis’s result about a central series associated with the vanishing off subgroup. We write $V_{1}=V(G)$ for the vanishing off subgroup of $G$, and $V_{i}=[V_{i-1},G]$ for the terms in this central series. Lewis proved that there exists a positive integer $n$ such that if $V_{3}<G_{3}$, then $|G\,:\,V_{1}|=|G^{\prime }\,:\,V_{2}|^{2}=p^{2n}$. Let $D_{3}/V_{3}=C_{G/V_{3}}(G^{\prime }/V_{3})$. He also showed that if $V_{3}<G_{3}$, then either $|G\,:\,D_{3}|=p^{n}$ or $D_{3}=V_{1}$. We show that if $V_{i}<G_{i}$ for $i\geqslant 4$, where $G_{i}$ is the $i$-th term in the lower central series of $G$, then $|G_{i-1}\,:\,V_{i-1}|=|G\,:\,D_{3}|$.

The relationship between the distribution of zeros of an infinite Blaschke product $B$ and the inclusion in weighted Bergman spaces $A_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}}^{p}$ of the derivative of $B$ or the derivative of functions in its model space $H^{2}\ominus \mathit{BH}^{2}$ is investigated.

The Dixmier Conjecture says that every endomorphism of the (first) Weyl algebra $A_{1}$ (over a field of characteristic zero) is an automorphism, i.e., if $PQ-QP=1$ for some $P,Q\in A_{1}$, then $A_{1}=K\langle P,Q\rangle$. The Weyl algebra $A_{1}$ is a $\mathbb{Z}$-graded algebra. We prove that the Dixmier Conjecture holds if the elements $P$ and $Q$ are sums of no more than two homogeneous elements of $A_{1}$ (there is no restriction on the total degrees of $P$ and $Q$).

It is shown that Jamison sequences, introduced in 2007 by Badea and Grivaux, arise naturally in the study of topological groups with no small subgroups, of Banach or normed algebra elements whose powers are close to identity along subsequences, and in characterizations of (self-adjoint) positive operators by the accretiveness of some of their powers. The common core of these results is a description of those sequences for which non-identity elements in Lie groups or normed algebras escape an arbitrary small neighborhood of the identity in a number of steps belonging to the given sequence. Several spectral characterizations of Jamison sequences are given, and other related results are proved.

It is now well known that ultracontractive properties of semigroups with infinitesimal generator given by an undirected graph Laplacian operator can be obtained through an understanding of the geometry of the underlying infinite weighted graph. The aim of this work is to extend these results to semigroups with infinitesimal generators given by a directed graph Laplacian operator through an analogous inspection of the geometry of the underlying directed graph. In particular, we introduce appropriate nomenclature to discuss the geometry of an infinite directed graph, as well as provide sufficient conditions to extend ultracontractive properties of undirected graph Laplacians to those of the directed variety. Such directed graph Laplacians can often be observed in the study of coupled oscillators, where recent work made explicit the link between synchronous patterns to systems of identically coupled oscillators and ultracontractive properties of undirected graph semigroups. Therefore, in this work we demonstrate the applicability of our results on directed graph semigroups by extending the aforementioned investigation beyond the idealized case of identically coupled oscillators.

In this paper, we introduce a class of nonsmooth nonconvex optimization problems, and we propose to use a local iterative minimization-majorization (MM) algorithm to find an optimal solution for the optimization problem. The cost functions in our optimization problems are an extension of convex functions with MC separable penalty, which were previously introduced by Ivan Selesnick. These functions are not convex; therefore, convex optimization methods cannot be applied here to prove the existence of optimal minimum point for these functions. For our purpose, we use convex analysis tools to first construct a class of convex majorizers, which approximate the value of non-convex cost function locally, then use the MM algorithm to prove the existence of local minimum. The convergence of the algorithm is guaranteed when the iterative points $x^{(k)}$ are obtained in a ball centred at $x^{(k-1)}$ with small radius. We prove that the algorithm converges to a stationary point (local minimum) of cost function when the surregators are strongly convex.

In this short note we first extend the validity of the spectral radius formula, obtained by M. Anoussis and G. Gatzouras, for Fourier–Stieltjes algebras. The second part is devoted to showing that, for the measure algebra on any locally compact non-discrete Abelian group, there are no non-trivial constraints among three quantities: the norm, the spectral radius, and the supremum of the Fourier–Stieltjes transform, even if we restrict our attention to measures with all convolution powers singular with respect to the Haar measure.

We consider expansions of o-minimal structures on the real field by collections of restrictions to the positive real line of the canonical Weierstrass products associated with sequences such as $(-n^{s})_{n>0}$ (for $s>0$) and $(-s^{n})_{n>0}$ (for $s>1$), and also expansions by associated functions such as logarithmic derivatives. There are only three possible outcomes known so far: (i) the expansion is o-minimal (that is, definable sets have only finitely many connected components); (ii) every Borel subset of each $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ is definable; (iii) the expansion is interdefinable with a structure of the form $(\mathfrak{R}^{\prime },\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}^{\mathbb{Z}})$ where $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}>1$, $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}^{\mathbb{Z}}$ is the set of all integer powers of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}$, and $\mathfrak{R}^{\prime }$ is o-minimal and defines no irrational power functions.

We establish new oscillation criteria for nonlinear differential equations of second order. The results here make some improvements of oscillation criteria of Butler, Erbe, and Mingarelli [2], Wong [8, 9], and Philos and Purnaras [6].

In 1965, A. Livingston conjectured the $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$-linear independence of logarithms of values of the sine function at rational arguments. In 2016, S. Pathak disproved the conjecture. In this article, we give a new proof of Livingston’s conjecture using some fundamental trigonometric identities. Moreover, we show that a stronger version of her theorem is true. In fact, we modify this conjecture by introducing a co-primality condition, and in that case we provide the necessary and sufficient conditions for the conjecture to be true. Finally, we identify a maximal linearly independent subset of the numbers considered in Livingston’s conjecture.

One of the approaches to the Riemann Hypothesis is the Nyman–Beurling criterion. Cotangent sums play a significant role in this criterion. Here we investigate the values of these cotangent sums for various shifts of the argument.

We prove irregularities in the distribution of prime numbers in any Beatty sequence ${\mathcal{B}}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC},\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD})$, where $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}$ is a positive real irrational number of finite type.

Our aim in this paper is to establish a generalization of Sobolev’s inequality for Riesz potentials $I_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}(\,\cdot \,),\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}}f$ of order $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}(\,\cdot \,)$ with $f\in L^{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F7},\unicode[STIX]{x1D705},\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}}(X)$ over bounded non-doubling metric measure spaces. As a corollary we obtain Sobolev’s inequality for double phase functionals with variable exponents.

Any knot in $S^{3}$ can be reduced to a slice knot by crossing changes. Indeed, this slice knot can be taken to be the unknot. In this paper we study the question of when the same holds for knots in homology spheres. We show that a knot in a homology sphere is nullhomotopic in a smooth homology ball if and only if that knot is smoothly concordant to a knot that is homotopic to a smoothly slice knot. As a consequence, we prove that the equivalence relation on knots in homology spheres given by cobounding immersed annuli in a homology cobordism is generated by concordance in homology cobordisms together with homotopy in a homology sphere.

Given an entire function $f$ of finite order $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}$ and positive lower order $\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}$, Boxall and Jones proved a bound of the form $C(\log H)^{\unicode[STIX]{x1D702}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D706},\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C})}$ for the density of algebraic points of bounded degree and height at most $H$ on the restrictions to compact sets of the graph of $f$. The constant $C$ and exponent $\unicode[STIX]{x1D702}$ are effectively computable from certain data associated with the function. In this followup note, using different measures of the growth of entire functions, we obtain similar bounds for other classes of functions to which the original theorem does not apply.

Given a smooth compact hypersurface $M$ with boundary $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F4}=\unicode[STIX]{x2202}M$, we prove the existence of a sequence $M_{j}$ of hypersurfaces with the same boundary as $M$, such that each Steklov eigenvalue $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70E}_{k}(M_{j})$ tends to zero as $j$ tends to infinity. The hypersurfaces $M_{j}$ are obtained from $M$ by a local perturbation near a point of its boundary. Their volumes and diameters are arbitrarily close to those of $M$, while the principal curvatures of the boundary remain unchanged.
