The paper characterizes the set of all possible values for the number of lines determined by n points for n sufficiently large. For the lower bound of Kelly and Moser for the number of lines in a configuration with n — k collinear points is shown to be sharp and it is shown that all values between Mmin(k) and Mmax(k) are assumed with the exception of Mmax — 1 and Mmax — 3. Exact expressions are obtained for the lower end of the continuum of values leading down from In particular, the best value of c = 1 is obtained in Erdös’ previous expression for this lower end of the continuum.

Anderson and Ohm have introduced valuations of monoid rings k[Γ] where k is a field and Γ a cancellative torsion-free commutative monoid. We study the residue class fields in question and solve a problem concerning the pure transcendence of the residue fields.

We prove that the conjugate function operator is bounded in Lp(Г, wds), 1 < p < ∞, if and only if w ∈ Ap(Г), where Г is a quasiregular curve.

The Sobolev inequality of order m asserts that if p ≧ 1, mp < n and 1/q = 1/p — m/n, then the Lq-norm of a smooth function with compact support in Rn is bounded by a constant times the sum of the Lp-norms of the partial derivatives of order m of that function. In this paper we show that that sum may be reduced to include only the completely mixed partial derivatives or order m, and in some circumstances even fewer partial derivatives.

In [1] and [2] T. Husain and J. Liang show the following results: RI. Every character on a Fréchet algebra with a Schauder basis (xi)i≧1 such that: (1) XiXj = XjXi = Xj if i ≦ j, (2) Pi(Xi) ≠ 0 and Pi(xi+1) = 0 (where (pi)i≧1 is a denumerable family of semi-norms defining the topology of the algebra) is continuous. R2. Every character on a Fréchet algebra with orthogonal and unconditional Schauder basis is continuous. The proofs of these last results are very long and introduce complex calculation without aid of spectral theory of locally ra-convex algebras. We give here short proofs of these results with aid of a characterization of elements of the spectrum in locally m-convex algebras with values of characters.

compact Riemannian 4-symmetric space M can be regarded as a fibre bundle over a Riemannian 2-symmetric space with totally geodesic fibres isometric to a 2-symmetric space. Here the result of R. Crittenden for conjugate and cut points in a 2-symmetric space is extended to the focal points of the fibres of M. Also the restriction of the exponential map of M up to the first focal locus in the normal bundle of a fibre is proved to yield a covering map onto its image. It is shown that for the noncompact dual M*, the fibres have no focal points and hence the exponential map of M* restricted to the normal bundle of a fibre is a covering map. The classification of the compact simply connected 4-symmetric spaces G/L with G classical simple provides a large class of examples of these fibrations.

Let A, B denote sequence-to-sequence matrix methods of summability and A · B the “dot” or iteration product defined by (A · B)x = A(Bx) for all sequences x for which this exists. Some inclusion relations are given involving the methods A, B, A · B, B · A and the method defined by the matrix product AB. We take A, B to be of certain types whose products have not been studied extensively before, e.g. H* · Ck or Ck · H* where H* is quasi-Hausdorff (and hence upper triangular) and Ck is a Cesàro matrix (which is lower triangular). The investigations show also a link between the “Product Property” A ⊂ A · B and the translativity properties of A and B.

In this paper we give a description of:

(1) the Hopf algebra structure of k*(G; L) when G is a compact, connected Lie group and L is a ring of type Q(P) so that H*(G; L) is torsion free;

(2) the algebra structure of k*(G2; L) for L = Z2 or Z.

We give three new partition theorems of the classical Rogers-Ramanujan type which are very much in the style of MacMahon. These are a continuation of four theorems of the same kind given recently by the second author. One of these new theorems, very similar to one of the original Rogers-Ramanuj an - MacMahon type theorems is as follows: Let C(n) denote the number of partitions of n into parts congruent to ±2, ± 3, ±4, ± 5, ±6, ±7 (mod 20). Let D(n) denote the number of partitions of n of the form n = b1 + b2 + … + bt, where bt ≧ 2, bt ≧ bi + 1 and if 1 ≦ i ≦ [(t - 2)/2], bi - bi + 1 ≧ 2. Then C(n) = D(n).

A characterization of torsionless rings is given which shows that the integral closure of a torsionless ring need not be Prüfer.

The Rank Theorem is proved for locally Lipschitz continuous functions f:Rn → Rp with generalized derivative of constant rank.

The notion of nuclear object in an autonomous category is studied. It is shown that the full subcategory determined by the nuclear objects is also autonomous.

A uniform space X is said to be uniformly locally connected if given any entourage U there exists an entourage V ⊂ U such that V[x] is connected for each x ∈ X. It is said to have property S if given any entourage U, X can be written as a finite union of connected sets each of which is U-small.

Based on these two uniform connection properties, another proof is given of the following well known result in the theory of locally connected spaces: The Stone-Čech compactification βX is locally connected if and only if X is locally connected and pseudocompact.

We present a general method based on the van Kampen theorem for computing the fundamental group of the total space in certain Steenrod bundles. The method is applied to mapping spaces and Grassmann bundles.
