This article explores the historical antecedents and later developments of the ‘quick-change’ or so-called ‘protean’ performance genres enacted on the British stage by male and female artists of the nineteenth and early twentieth century. Foundational in intent and chronological in approach, it foregrounds previously unknown or neglected performers, especially (though not exclusively) from Britain, whose respective contributions to these genres have seldom been recognized. Overall, the research highlights the rich complexity of these marginalized yet sophisticated performance practices that have been critically ignored within theatre historiography but which are still alive today.
Epistemological positioning is foundational to any analysis, yet pluralist epistemologies are taught unevenly in political science methods courses. This article draws attention to this crucial foundation and suggests that a basic grounding in positivist and interpretivist research paradigms would give students conceptual tools to adjudicate between competing claims and contradictory evidence in the empirical world—even as it would highlight comparative advantages of different approaches to knowledge production. Using an optical illusion as a heuristic guide, the article proposes a practical classroom exercise to illustrate the central differences between positivist and interpretivist approaches to political science and to elucidate how these differences play out in research design and inquiry.
To compare the diagnostic accuracy of nasal endoscopy, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging for chronic rhinosinusitis and chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps.
Methods
PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus and the Cochrane Library were searched from 1990 to August 2025. Studies reporting 2 × 2 diagnostic data for diagnostic nasal endoscopy, computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging were pooled using random-effects models to estimate sensitivity, specificity and summary receiver-operating characteristic measures.
Results
Nine diagnostic datasets were included. Diagnostic nasal endoscopy showed high sensitivity (0.87) but moderate specificity (0.63) versus computed tomography. Computed tomography demonstrated good sensitivity (0.90) but limited specificity (0.50) versus histopathology. Magnetic resonance imaging provided moderate sensitivity (0.71) and high specificity (0.88) versus computed tomography. Substantial heterogeneity existed across modalities and reference standards.
Conclusion
Diagnostic nasal endoscopy is highly sensitive but moderately specific. Computed tomography is sensitive but limited by false positives. Magnetic resonance imaging appears more specific, although evidence remains scarce. Further paired imaging–histopathology studies are required.
While Kantian readers consider Hegel’s discussion of the significance of Kant’s account of apperception as the key to understanding what he means by the concept of the concept, the so-called metaphysical readers have warned against identifying these accounts too swiftly, urging instead that the concept is an onto-logical structure which needs to be conceived through the genuinely Hegelian notion of absolute negativity. In this paper, I reject the problematic underlying assumption shared by both interpretative strands that Hegel’s notion of self-negation sits uncomfortably with conceiving Hegel’s concept of the concept in terms of the unity of apperception. Contrary to both one-sided readings, I seek to preserve their insights by arguing first that Hegel’s conception of the concept, or thinking only thinking itself, and its absolute negativity, can be understood as the radicalization of Kant’s account of apperception, or self-relation of thinking, and its original emptiness. Second, I will show that the absolute negation provides the conceptual resources to understand how pure thinking can determine itself and thus give itself concrete conceptual content.
Festive culture is often analysed as a manifestation of spontaneity, creativity, popular culture, and humour, as well as an opportunity to express territorial identity. However, these rituals and their artistic expressions can also manifest hateful and contemptuous discourses toward national and cultural minorities, as observed in some European carnival celebrations. In the case of Valencia, from the Francoist dictatorship onwards, the festive culture was controlled by a political and social elite right and extreme right group, which instrumentalised the celebration as a political tool. Thus, these phenomena can be observed with the proliferation of hate speech against social and political minorities as Catalan and Valencian nationalists, depicting them as animals, traitors and enemies of Valencian and Spanish identity and exposing them in public space to shame them. This phenomenon was radicalised at the end of 2015 with the mobilisation of the Spanish right and far right to counter the left and nationalist government of the city, despite the Fallas’ adherence to UNESCO principles to promote understanding and dialogue between cultures and nationalities.
Figs (Ficus spp.) are widely considered keystone resources in tropical ecosystems, yet mechanisms underlying their importance to primates are rarely assessed. We tested five hypotheses explaining the importance of figs for mantled howlers (Alouatta palliata) using a 10-year phenological dataset from southeastern Mexico. We monitored 57 trees representing figs and five other dietary species weekly from 2012 to 2021. The asynchrony hypothesis predicted lower intraspecific synchrony in figs, but we found no differences between figs and other species. The keystone hypothesis was strongly supported: this genus reduced weeks below critical thresholds by 59.5%, rescuing the community from scarcity in 72 weeks (14.7% of monitoring). During these events, figs contributed 20% of resources despite representing one-sixth of monitored taxa. The bet-hedging hypothesis predicted lower interannual variance in fig fruiting, but figs showed significantly higher variance than most species. The complementarity hypothesis predicted negative correlations between fig and non-fig phenology, yet we found positive correlations. The multiple cropping hypothesis predicted more fruiting cycles in figs than other species, but frequencies were equivalent (2.16 vs 2.13 cycles/year). Figs function as a keystone resource for mantled howlers not through unique phenological patterns but through reliable provisioning during critical scarcity periods, preventing resource bottlenecks that could otherwise limit the persistence of howler populations.
Schur functions are a basis of the symmetric function ring that represent Schubert cohomology classes for Grassmannians. Replacing the cohomology ring with K-theory yields a rich combinatorial theory of inhomogeneous deformations, where Schur functions are replaced by their K-analogs, the symmetric Grothendieck functions. We initiate a theory of the Kromatic symmetric function$\overline {X}_G$, a K-theoretic analog of the chromatic symmetric function $X_G$ of a graph G. The Kromatic symmetric function is a generating series for graph colorings in which vertices receive any nonempty set of colors such that neighboring color sets are disjoint. Our main result lifts a theorem of Gasharov (1996), showing that when G is a claw-free incomparability graph, $\overline {X}_G$ is a positive sum of symmetric Grothendieck functions. This suggests a topological interpretation of Gasharov’s theorem. Kromatic symmetric functions of path graphs are not positive in any of several K-analogs of the e-basis, demonstrating that the Stanley–Stembridge conjecture (1993) does not have such a lift to K-theory and so is unlikely to be amenable to a topological perspective. We define a vertex-weighted extension of $\overline {X}_G$ which admits a deletion–contraction relation. Finally, we give a K-analog for $\overline {X}_G$ of the monomial-basis expansion of $X_G$.
The contribution of active involvement in full-scale disaster exercises to learning processes is widely recognized. Accordingly, this study seeks to explore the learning gains of individuals who participated as live actors and observers in a full-scale avalanche exercise conducted with international collaboration.
Methods
This study used a mixed-methods approach integrating qualitative and quantitative research methods. Descriptive statistical techniques were employed to analyze quantitative data, while thematic analysis was utilized to interpret the qualitative data.
Results
Participants reported high levels of satisfaction in the domains of field knowledge (76.5%), Critical Decision-Making (74.6%), motivation (60.8%), and self-confidence (49.1%).
On the other hand, they raised concerns regarding the inadequacy of instructions (58.8%), the lack of up-to-date practices (47%), the realism of the scenario (54.9%), safety measures (56.8%), and communication (72.5%).
Conclusions
The findings suggest that participants demonstrated development in both cognitive and affective domains, regardless of the specific roles they assumed during the exercise. In the cognitive dimension, improvements were observed in high-angle rescue, avalanche search methodologies, understanding of team roles, intervention procedures, prioritization criteria, and safety assessment. In the affective dimension, advancements were noted in recognizing ethical issues, exploration of authority boundaries, willingness to intervene, and self-confidence.
Dysregulation of fatty acids metabolism has been associated with the risk of osteoarthritis (OA), yet current evidence from epidemiological or genetic studies remains inconclusive. We aimed to investigate the phenotypic association and genetic architecture between total fatty acids, saturated fatty acids (SFA), MUFA, PUFA and OA. Leveraging individual-level data from the UK Biobank, combined with the hitherto largest genome-wide association studies of fatty acids (n 136 016) and OA (n 826 690) in European individuals, we implemented a comprehensive analytical framework. This included observational and genetic analyses, incorporating phenotypic associations, genetic correlations, cross-trait meta-analysis, enrichment analysis and Mendelian randomisation (MR). Observational analysis identified SFA as a risk factor, while MUFA and PUFA as protective factors for OA. Despite a lack of genome-wide genetic correlation, statistically significant local signals were detected within three specific genomic regions. Cross-trait meta-analysis identified sixty-eight pleiotropic loci shared between fatty acids and OA, of which nine were novel. Enrichment analysis revealed the shared genes were enriched in lipoprotein metabolism, immune response and inflammation regulation pathways. Two-sample MR provided evidence for a causal relationship of MUFA and PUFA on OA that survived false discovery rate correction. This study supports associations between circulating fatty acids and OA, with MUFA and PUFA exerting a protective role. Our findings provide new perspectives into OA prevention especially regarding the potential dietary interventions.
Dr. C. Norman Coleman initiated the establishment of a working group within the Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response (ASPR), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, to explore ways in which federal planning and guidance could better foster effective and efficient nuclear detonation response, with initial attention to cytokine use in the public health and medical response. Dr. Coleman recognized the difference between planning guidance (what to do) and a strategy (how to do it). He developed actionable strategies to improve our nation’s nuclear preparedness, including scarce resources triage protocols,1 cytokine and evacuation priorities,2 and the Exposure And Symptom Triage (EAST) tool.3 Despite his absence and in his spirit, this working group, nicknamed “The Solutions Lab,” is continuing the work on actionable strategies for nuclear preparedness.
This article draws on newly accessible primary sources to examine how, between 1983 and 1987, the Chinese Communist Party addressed the legacy of Cultural Revolution-era political violence in Guangxi. It focuses on a series of initiatives through which local authorities revised historical narratives, assessed political responsibility within bureaucratic frameworks, and documented past events through structured writing efforts. These efforts, the article argues, amounted to a form of contained transitional justice – a Party-directed, bureaucratically managed process of reckoning with the past that combined internal investigation, symbolic redress and controlled truth production. While resembling global practices of transitional justice in truth-seeking and victim rehabilitation, the process was tightly constrained by ideological priorities and excluded meaningful public participation. The Guangxi case, exceptional for both the scale of violence and the timing of its reckoning, offers insight into how authoritarian regimes manage traumatic historical legacies through disciplined yet symbolic mechanisms of historical clarification.
This study explores the characteristics of musical and communicative interactions – primarily vocal – between parents and children aged 6 to 36 months in Barcelona, Spain. Five families participated. Data were gathered using LENA® audio recordings across full days and semi-structured interviews. Episodes were analysed using a validated instrument and thematic coding. Findings reveal mismatches between parental perceptions and observed behaviours, highlight children’s active participation, and identify underreported functions and settings of musical interaction. This research underscores the importance of combining parental accounts with data gathered from real-life scenarios to understand everyday family musicality as a shared, dynamic, and reciprocal phenomenon.
Simple analytical criteria are derived to determine whether axisymmetric base flows in annuli and pipes are stable or unstable. Both axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric inviscid disturbances are considered. Our sufficient condition for stability improves upon the classical result of Batchelor & Gill (1962) J. Fluid Mech. 14(4), 529–551 following the idea of the second Kelvin–Arnol’d stability theorem. A novel sufficient condition for instability is also derived by extending the recently proposed hurdle theorem for parallel flows (Deguchi et al. 2024 J. Fluid Mech. 997, A25). These analytical criteria are applied to annular and pipe model flows and are shown to effectively predict the neutral parameters obtained from eigenvalue computations of the stability problem.
Naturally occurring retirement communities (NORCs) are geographic areas that have come to house a high proportion (≥30%) of older residents. Implementing onsite social programming in NORCs, or other places where older adults are clustered, can support aging in place. As such it is important to be able to identify sites that could benefit. We describe a data and equity-driven process used to select NORC and social housing sites for a program aimed at empowering older adults and strengthening aging in place in Toronto, Canada. We (1) created a data-driven shortlist of buildings with population-level data, (2) prioritized equity by targeting buildings with high health needs and neighbourhood-level diversity, and (3) facilitated building and resident engagement to assess interest and suitability. This process offers a novel and replicable approach for selecting sites for enhanced, place-based programming that can inform site selection for other community-based programming for older adults across diverse contexts.
We investigate the three-dimensional melting dynamics of an initially spherical particle translating in a warmer liquid using sharp-interface simulations that fully resolve both solid and fluid phases with the Stefan condition. A wide parameter space is explored, spanning initial Reynolds number ($\textit{Re}_0$), Stefan number ($\textit{St}$) and Richardson number ($\textit{Ri}$). In the absence of buoyancy ($\textit{Ri}= 0$), the interface evolution is governed by canonical wake bifurcations. Four regimes are identified: an axisymmetric regime ($\textit{Re}_0\lt 212$) with a rounded front and planar rear; a steady planar-symmetric regime ($212\lt \textit{Re}_0\lt 273$) with an inclined rear plane; a periodic planar-symmetric regime ($273\lt \textit{Re}_0\lt 355$) where vortex shedding emerges in the wake; and a chaotic regime ($\textit{Re}_0\gt 355$) with fluctuating stagnation points and a more rounded rear. Despite these differences, all regimes exhibit a tendency towards melt-rate homogenisation over time. Besides, we introduce an aspect-ratio-based surface-area formulation that yields a predictive model, accurately capturing volume evolution across regimes. Hydrodynamic loads also reflect the coupling between shape and flow: drag follows rigid-sphere correlations only at moderate $\textit{Re}_0$; planar rears enhance drag at higher $\textit{Re}_0$; lift appears only in symmetry-broken regimes and reverses late in time; torque reorients the rear plane towards vertical, consistent with free-body experiments. When buoyancy is included, assisting configurations ($\textit{Ri}\gt 0$) suppress recirculation and maintain quasi-spherical shapes, whereas opposing or transverse buoyancy ($\textit{Ri}\lt 0$) destabilises wakes and promotes tilted planar rears. These results provide a unified framework for convection-driven melting across laminar, periodic and chaotic wakes, with implications for geophysical and industrial processes.
