Two Late Ordovician cornulitid species, Cornulites richmondensis (Miller, 1874) and Cornulites hemistriatus new species, from the Ellis Bay and Vaureal formations of Anticosti Island, eastern Canada, are each shown in this study to have a thick, punctate, cross-bladed lamellar, calcitic conch wall, a crested fold, a septate juvenile part, and endoconic chamber deposit. These Late Ordovician, free-living (i.e., nonencrusting) forms of Cornulites Schlotheim, 1820 have characters intermediate between Cornulites and the late Silurian-Devonian forms of Tentaculites Schlotheim, 1820, particularly by having incipient inner layers and poorly fused annuli, but lacking cornulitid-type vesicular microstructures. The described cornulitids are similar to brachiopods in their cross-bladed lamellae and pseudopunctae, but their lamellar layers are considerably finer and much less distinct than those of brachiopod shells.
The study documents the embryonic and larval development of Clarias dussumieri, a Near-Threatened, cultivable, and highly valued food fish endemic to the Western Ghats. Induced breeding facilitated detailed observation of developmental stages using light microscopy. Unfertilized eggs measured 1.5 ± 0.02 mm in diameter and enlarged to 1.7 ± 0.10 mm after fertilization (∼13% increase). The first cleavage occurred at 00:36 ± 00:02 h, reaching 64 cells by 01:35 ± 00:06 h. Epiboly progressed from 30% at 03:20 ± 00:10 h to 50% at 04:30 ± 00:05 h and 90% at 05:50 ± 00:10 h; neurulation was evident by 07:40 ± 01:10 h and somites by 11:08 ± 01:26 h. The first heartbeat appeared during the pharyngula period (17:25 ± 01:30 h), and hatching occurred at 25:30 ± 01:30 h at 26–27°C. Hatched larvae were 4.2 ± 0.02 mm total length, observed few melanophores by 12 h, conspicuous eye pigmentation by 24 h, and body pigmentation spreading by day 2 (5.90 ± 0.04 mm).The yolk sac was fully absorbed by 72 ± 2.50 h post-hatching, marking the onset of exogenous feeding. By day 4 (pre-flexion), larvae reached 7.1 ± 0.02 mm; initial notochord flexion began around day 7 and post-flexion from day 10, with juvenile-like morphology evident by day 25 (15.27–17.80 mm). The standardized timelines and measurements provide a baseline for hatchery practice and conservation aquaculture of C. dussumieri, supporting protocol refinement for improving survival and growth under controlled conditions
In this article, we study the pressure at infinity of potentials defined over countable Markov shifts. We establish an upper semi-continuity result concerning the limiting behaviour of the pressure of invariant probability measures, where the escape of mass is controlled by the pressure at infinity. As a consequence, we establish criteria for the existence of equilibrium states and maximizing measures for uniformly continuous potentials. Additionally, we study the pressure at infinity of suspension flows defined over countable Markov shifts and prove an upper semi-continuity result for the pressure map.
This article considers British early nineteenth century attempts to reclaim Sagar Island, at the southwestern extremity of the Bengal delta, by clearing the island of jungle and settling and cultivating it—a project led first by colonial authorities at Calcutta and then by a joint-stock company established for the purpose, the Sagar Island Society. It considers the motivations behind the reclamation attempts, what they involved, and why they failed. The consequences – economic, human, and ecological—of the reclamation attempts are examined. The article reconstructs the almost entirely unknown history of events on Sagar Island from 1810 to 1833 through extensive new archival research and the study of rarely consulted publications from the period, before exploring their implications. In doing so, it sheds new light on the nature of British colonial capitalism and the environmental impact of British colonial interventions in South Asia, contributing to our understanding of the economic and environmental history of colonial Bengal and of the wider British imperial world. The article contends that events on Sagar Island offer a cautionary lesson about public and private initiatives to extend the frontiers of revenue extraction, and about the hubris of human efforts to ‘improve’ natural environments through large-scale projects of transformation. New insights are offered into the collusion between government and capital in British Bengal between the East India Company charter acts of 1813 and 1833, and into the colonial and capitalist origins of the Anthropocene.
Given the high prevalence of mental health challenges, the field of paediatric cardiology has increasingly recognised the need for integrated and embedded psychosocial programming in cardiology care. In response to this, the University of Michigan Congenital Heart Centre Psychosocial and Educational (M-COPE) Program was established in January 2020. This paper aims to describe the development, current structure, preliminary outcomes, and future directions of the M-COPE Program to inform similar programme development efforts.
Methods:
Informed by a comprehensive needs assessment (group/individual interviews, patient surveys), the M-COPE Program mission centres on expanding (1) psychosocial clinical services, (2) psychosocial research, (3) mental health training for all learners, and (4) advocacy for improved psychosocial care for paediatric cardiology patients and families.
Results:
In its first five years, the M-COPE Program has expanded access to mental health care by increasing the number of psychosocial clinicians, embedding psychology/perinatal psychiatry in select cardiology clinics, and developing novel modes of service delivery through collaborative efforts across our multidisciplinary teams. Training initiatives have included the development of cardiac psychology fellowships and a mental health curriculum for cardiology physician fellows. Research is foundational to the programme, ranging from federally funded research to centre-specific quality improvement projects.
Discussion:
The M-COPE Program has become foundational to our heart centre. Future directions include enhancing psychosocial care at home for patients/caregivers, integration of a perinatal psychiatrist, and wider-scale launch of novel patient-focused initiatives. Continued study of programme impact will be ongoing with key metrics including referral patterns and patient/family outcomes.
Survivorship among individuals with CHD has expanded, bringing more pregnancies into routine care. In this issue, a single-centre retrospective case–control study (162 CHD deliveries vs 321 controls) reports higher composite maternal cardiac events (8.6 vs 3.4%; risk ratio 2.5, 95% CI 1.2–5.4), greater use of operative or assisted delivery, and an approximately doubled length of stay. Modified WHO class correlates with length of stay but not with discrete cardiac events; maternal age independently predicts cardiac events; rates of pre-eclampsia are lower in CHD. These findings support first-trimester cardio-obstetric triage, standardised delivery bundles, and capacity planning that uses risk class to anticipate monitoring needs, with routine 6–12-week postpartum review. Limitations include selection, era differences, and modest sample size. Overall, anticipatory planning and disciplined intrapartum decision-making remain key to safe, resource-aware care for pregnant women with CHD.
To report on a volunteer-led program supporting local healthcare providers (L-HCPs) and disaster responders after the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake, focusing on its implementation and immediate outcomes.
Methods
A volunteer-led initiative established by university alumni deployed medical teams to a local hospital on weekends following the earthquake, providing onsite support to relieve L-HCPs from prolonged strain. The program integrated information and communication technology (ICT) platforms to enable remote support, communication, and structured debriefing sessions for volunteers, facilitating assistance from a wider network.
Results
The project effectively sustained the local health care institution’s capacity by managing diverse patient needs, including a surge in internal medical conditions. It provided essential respite, allowing local physicians crucial personal time, for which they expressed profound gratitude. Volunteer doctors reported effective stress management through the onsite and ICT-based support structure, and the initiative concluded safely without injury.
Conclusions
The project demonstrated that combining onsite medical assistance with strategically implemented ICT effectively mitigates burnout among L-HCPs, providing essential psychological support for deployed volunteers. The findings highlight the significance of sustained recovery-phase support, professional networks, and ICT in disaster response. These experiences highlight the need for comprehensive, system-wide support strategies for all frontline personnel in future disasters.
Despite contemporary relevance in understanding how cities historically overcame demographic, social and economic constraints imposed by the lack of clean, fresh water, the value of estimating aqueduct delivery rates and their potential relationship with population size in the Roman Empire remains uncertain. Here, the authors use settlement scaling theory to examine recent statistics for city size and aqueduct capacity, revealing a systematic but sublinear relationship between these variables, whereby water supply increased at a slower rate than population size. Far from merely ostentatious displays of power, aqueducts were carefully planned to ensure an adequate supply of clean and fresh water.
