Embedding climate resilient development principles in planning, urban design, and architecture means ensuring that transformation of the built environment helps achieve carbon neutrality, effective adaptation, and well-being for people and nature. Planners, urban designers, and architects are called to bridge the domains of research and practice and evolve their agency and capacity, developing methods and tools consistent across spatial scales to ensure the convergence of outcomes towards targets. Shaping change necessitates an innovative action-driven framework with multi-scale analysis of urban climate factors and co-mapping, co-design, and co-evaluation with city stakeholders and communities. This Element provides analysis on how urban climate factors, system efficiency, form and layout, building envelope and surface materials, and green/blue infrastructure affect key metrics and indicators related to complementary aspects like greenhouse gas emissions, impacts of extreme weather events, spatial and environmental justice, and human comfort. Impulsivity and aggression are known risk factors for suicide, with observed age and sex differences in their impact.
Aims
To explore variations in impulsivity and aggression based on sex and age and examine their roles in predicting suicide.
Method
We examined 582 participants (406 individuals who died by suicide, 176 non-suicidal sudden-death controls) using the psychological autopsy method. Measures of impulsivity and aggression included the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS) and the Brown–Goodwin History of Aggression (BGHA). Participants were categorised into four groups: suicide male, control male, suicide female and control female. For group comparisons, we used analyses of variance and Spearman’s rank correlation to assess the relationship between age and BIS and/or BGHA ratings. Stepwise logistic regression was used to identify predictors of suicide for each sex.
Results
Higher levels of BIS and BGHA ratings were found in the suicide group compared with controls (BIS: 51.3 v. 42.2, P = 0.002, η2 = 0.017; BGHA: 7.1 v. 4.1, P < 0.001, η2 = 0.028), with no significant sex differences. BIS and BGHA ratings decreased with age in the suicide groups (suicide male: impulsivity ρ = −0.327, P < 0.001; suicide female: aggression ρ = −0.175, P = 0.038) but not among controls. Logistic regression analysis revealed that for men, aggression (odds ratio 1.072, 95% CI: 1.032–1.112) was a key predictor. For women, younger age (odds ratio 0.970, 95% CI: 0.948–0.993), low BIS impulsivity ratings (odds ratio 1.018, 95% CI: 1.001–1.036) and living with children (odds ratio 0.448, 95% CI: 0.208–0.966) were protective factors.
Conclusions
Impulsive and aggressive behaviours are critical factors in suicide risk among younger individuals, indicating an age effect but no sex dimorphism, with aggressive behaviours being a better predictor for men and impulsive and aggressive behaviours for women.
Direct numerical simulation (DNS) studies of power-law (PL) fluids are performed for purely viscous-shear-thinning ($n\in [0.5,0.75]$), Newtonian ($n=1$) and purely viscous-shear-thickening ($n=2.0$) fluids, considering two Reynolds numbers ($Re_{\tau }\in [395,590]$), and both smooth and rough surfaces. We carefully designed a numerical experiment to isolate key effects and simplify the complex problem of turbulent flow of non-Newtonian fluids over rough surfaces, enabling the development of a theoretical model to explain the observed phenomena and provide predictions. The DNS results of the present work were validated against literature data for smooth and rough Newtonian turbulent flows, as well as smooth shear-thinning cases. A new analytical expression for the mean velocity profile – extending the classical Blasius $1/7$ profile to power-law fluids – was proposed and validated. In contrast to common belief, the decrease in $n$ leads to smaller Kolmogorov length scales and the formation of larger structures, requiring finer grids and longer computational domains for accurate simulations. Our results confirm that purely viscous shear-thinning fluids exhibit drag reduction, while shear-thickening fluids display an opposite trend. Interestingly, we found that viscous-thinning turbulence shares similarities with Newtonian transitional flows, resembling the behaviour of shear-thinning, extensional-thickening viscoelastic fluids. This observation suggests that the extensional and elastic effects in turbulent flows within constant cross-section geometries may not be significant. However, the shear-thickening case exhibits characteristics similar to high-Reynolds-number Newtonian turbulence, suggesting that phenomena observed in such flows could be studied at significantly lower Reynolds numbers, reducing computational costs. In the analysis of rough channels, we found that the recirculation bubble between two roughness elements is mildly influenced by the thinning nature of the fluid. Moreover, we observed that shear-thinning alters the flow in the fully rough regime, where the friction factor typically reaches a plateau. Our results indicate the possibility that, at sufficiently high Reynolds numbers, this plateau may not exist for shear-thinning fluids. Finally, we provide detailed turbulence statistics for different rheologies, allowing, for the first time, an in-depth study of the effects of rheology on turbulent flow over rough surfaces.
The scope of unconscious processing has long been, and still remains, a hotly debated issue. This is driven in part by the current diversity of methods to manipulate and measure perceptual consciousness. Here, we provide ten recommendations and nine outstanding issues about designing experimental paradigms, analyzing data, and reporting the results of studies on unconscious processing. These were formed through dialogue among a group of researchers representing a range of theoretical backgrounds. We acknowledge that some of these recommendations naturally do not align with some existing approaches and are likely to change following theoretical and methodological development. Nevertheless, we hold that at this stage of the field they are instrumental in evoking a much-needed discussion about the norms of studying unconscious processes and helping researchers make more informed decisions when designing experiments. In the long run, we aim for this paper and future discussions around the outstanding issues to lead to a more convergent corpus of knowledge about the extent – and limits – of unconscious processing.
This article examines the measurement systems used in the built environment of Xochicalco, a significant Epiclassic archaeological site located in Central Mexico. Through careful analysis of the dimensions of the various structures, we identified two primary measurement units: U7 (1.47 m) and U8 (1.68 m). These units exhibit similarities to the Mayan zapal and Nahua maitl, which have been previously documented across diverse temporal contexts and other regions within Mesoamerica. The investigation revealed patterns in the application of these units related to orientation, functionality, and construction methods, indicating meticulous planning and potential symbolic importance. The frequent use of measurements that are multiples of three, four, nine, and twelve times the base units suggests the utilization of standardized measuring instruments. This study enhances our understanding of Mesoamerican measurement practices, particularly at Xochicalco, and provides insights into cultural interactions and construction traditions during the Epiclassic period.
The macro-social and environmental conditions in which people live, such as the level of a country’s development or inequality, are associated with brain-related disorders. However, the relationship between these systemic environmental factors and the brain remains unclear. We aimed to determine the association between the level of development and inequality of a country and the brain structure of healthy adults.
Methods
We conducted a cross-sectional study pooling brain imaging (T1-based) data from 145 magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies in 7,962 healthy adults (4,110 women) in 29 different countries. We used a meta-regression approach to relate the brain structure to the country’s level of development and inequality.
Results
Higher human development was consistently associated with larger hippocampi and more expanded global cortical surface area, particularly in frontal areas. Increased inequality was most consistently associated with smaller hippocampal volume and thinner cortical thickness across the brain.
Conclusions
Our results suggest that the macro-economic conditions of a country are reflected in its inhabitants’ brains and may explain the different incidence of brain disorders across the world. The observed variability of brain structure in health across countries should be considered when developing tools in the field of personalized or precision medicine that are intended to be used across the world.
Financial relief proceedings come after divorce proceedings, whether in the same jurisdiction or not. In most cases, whether proceedings can continue against the other party is not an issue; the difficulty usually lies in the determination of the outcome of the financial relief proceedings. However, what happens when one party to the proceedings passes away before proceedings conclude? This was the crux of Unger and Another (in substitution for Hasan) v Ul-Hasan (Deceased) and Another [2023] UKSC 22 (Unger).
The Galapagos sea lion (Zalophus wollebaeki) is an endemic and endangered species that plays a vital role in the ecosystem dynamics of the archipelago. In recent decades, they have faced a significant population decline, related to the effects of climate variability and anthropogenic influences. Thus, the co-occurrence of sea lion resting areas with mosquito breeding sites and the presence of free-roaming domestic dogs present significant health risks related to parasite transmission. This research demonstrates the occurrence of Dirofilaria immitis (canine heartworm) in Z. wollebaeki, indicating their possible function as a definitive host for this parasite. Blood samples collected in August 2023 from 50 individuals (juveniles and adults) in 2 rookeries of San Cristóbal Island, revealed a 2% prevalence of D. immitis in juvenile females, as confirmed by Knott’s test and polymerase chain reaction analysis. Results of this work emphasize the critical necessity for effective monitoring and conservation strategies to address the threat posed by D. immitis and to safeguard this endangered species.
This chapter provides an explorative analysis of self-illness ambiguity in personality disorders. Self-illness ambiguity refers to the difficulty in distinguishing one’s self from a mental disorder or diagnosis. Personality disorder diagnoses may invoke a specific type of self-illness ambiguity, for the characteristics of personality disorders (i.e., maladaptive personality traits) seem more closely related to “who one is” than to a disorder. Our analysis focuses on the concept of trait maladaptivity. We use three characteristics of trait maladaptiveness (temporality, severity, and attitude) to compare such maladaptivity in personality disorders with other cases of trait maladaptivity. Aside from some similarities, we argue that managing one’s traits in the context of personality disorders is distinct in that it may involve a distancing or disidentification with the maladaptive trait, which sometimes leads to the development of a subsidiary (or “as if”) self. In a further step, people with a personality disorder may start to experience what we call “self–self-ambiguity,” where they struggle to determine whether a particular action is part of their default or subsidiary self. Finally, we discuss how people with a personality disorder implicitly relate to their maladaptive personality traits using the concept of self-relating.
Increased antibiotic use (AU) has been reported globally during the COVID-19 pandemic despite low rates of bacterial co-infection. We assessed changes in AU during the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia and the Philippines.
Methods:
We evaluated hospital-wide AU over 36 months in six hospitals, 3 in Indonesia and 3 in the Philippines. Intravenous antibiotics commonly used for respiratory conditions were selected and grouped for analysis. AU rates were calculated as monthly defined daily dose per 1000 patient-days or patient discharges. Median AU rates were compared from the pre-pandemic (March 2018–February 2020) and pandemic periods (March 2020–February 2021) using quantile regression to assess for statistical significance. Changes in AU during the COVID-19 pandemic were analyzed using interrupted time series analysis.
Results:
Significant increases were noted in the median AU rate from the pre-pandemic to pandemic period of all antibiotics combined in 3/6 hospitals (percentage change, Δ, 12.5%–63.6%) and anti-pseudomonal antibiotics in 3/6 hospitals (Δ 51.5%–161.5%). In the interrupted time series analysis, an immediate increase (range: 125.40–1762) in the use of all included antibiotics combined was observed in 3/6 hospitals at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. One of these 3 hospitals experienced a statistically significant sustained increase, while another experienced a decrease over time.
Conclusions:
We observed significant increases in facility-wide inpatient AU during the COVID-19 pandemic in our participating hospitals in Indonesia and the Philippines. These findings reinforce the importance of antibiotic stewardship practices to optimize AU, especially during infectious disease pandemics.
Human language is increasingly written rather than just spoken, primarily due to the proliferation of digital technology in modern life. This trend has enabled the creation of generative artificial intelligence (AI) trained on corpora containing trillions of words extracted from text on the internet. However, current language theory inadequately addresses digital text communication’s unique characteristics and constraints. This paper systematically analyzes and synthesizes existing literature to map the theoretical landscape of digitized language. The evidence demonstrates that, parallel to spoken language, features of written communication are frequently correlated with the socially constructed demographic identities of writers, a phenomenon we refer to as “digital accents.” This conceptualization raises complex ontological questions about the nature of digital text and its relationship to social identity. The same line of questioning, in conjunction with recent research, shows how generative AI systematically fails to capture the breadth of expression observed in human writing, an outcome we call “homogeneity-by-design.” By approaching text-based language from this theoretical framework while acknowledging its inherent limitations, social scientists studying language can strengthen their critical analysis of AI systems and contribute meaningful insights to their development and improvement.
In this text, I interpret Hegel’s concept of the family within the context of his theory of freedom. I take family life to entail a certain tension between freedom and nature that makes it necessary to reflect on the role of nature in our understanding of the family. For this, I examine two ways of understanding the family’s relation to nature, a conservative and a liberal one, to then offer a third, dialectical way as an alternative. My central argument is that Hegel’s concept of the family can be read as a response to the problem of our entanglement with nature and is thereby an integral part of his theory of ethical life and freedom. For this, I outline the normative principle underlying Hegel’s family concept that I will call ‘the notion of a self-conscious genus-process’ (Gattungsprozess). This notion enables an immanent critique of Hegel’s concept of the family without abandoning his dialectical conception of the relationship between freedom and nature.
To determine the minimum cost and affordability of three levels of diet quality in urban households in Cali, Colombia: a caloric-adequate diet, a nutrient-adequate diet, and a recommended diet.
Design
Least-cost diets were estimated for different demographic groups. The Cost of Caloric Adequacy (CoCA) and the Cost of Nutrient Adequacy (CoNA) were computed using linear programming models. The Cost of Recommended Diet (CoRD) adheres to Colombia’s Food-Based Dietary Guidelines. Individualized costs were aggregated for a representative household, and affordability was assessed by comparing these costs with household food expenditures. Data sources included the National Administrative Department of Statistics, the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, and the Colombia Institute of Family Welfare.

The per capita income and food expenditures of 885 urban households in Cali, taken from Colombia’s Great Integrated Household Survey.
Results
The CoNA per 1,000 kcal indicates that women require more nutrient-dense diets than men. Limiting nutrients include vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin B12, and calcium. Three food groups ―(1) meat, eggs, legumes, nuts, and seeds; (2) milk and dairy products; and (3) vegetables and fruits― account for about 70% of the CoRD. The affordability analysis shows that 42.66% of households in the 10th income percentile cannot afford the CoCA, none below the 20th percentile can afford the CoNA, and only those above the 40th percentile can afford the CoRD.
Conclusions:
Urban households face significant barriers not only to affording diets that promote long-term health, but also to those that meet nutritional requirements.
The chapter argues that post-1945 international human rights law cannot be understood without accounting for the interwar period and some core elements of human rights discourse which existed at the time. Whereas classical histories of human rights have focused on genealogy and teleology to spell out the advent of rights universalism, more recent work has anchored the origins of human rights in national political communities. Accounting for these new historiographies, this chapter distinguishes between nineteenth-century human rights discourse and post–Second World War international human rights law. Elements of the former and antecedents of the latter can be found in the interwar period, in particular in the legal regimes for the protection of refugees and minorities. Although it analyses the two regimes separately, it articulates their points of convergence and situates them in the context of rising nationalism and the advent of the individual as a subject of international law.
The Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro National Park are well-known for their migratory herds of large herbivores. These migrations are suggested to be due to different nutritional needs of the large herbivores over the year. The nutritional needs of the large herbivores are fulfilled by the different nutrient content of the grassland biomass. Soil nutrient availability is at least partly controlling the nutrient content of the grassland biomass despite plant-specific nutrient uptake mechanisms. Despite lot of data existing on the nutrient content of the grassland biomass in this area, less is known about the nutrient availability of the soils, especially for the transect from the Ngorongoro crater via the Ngorongoro Conservation area to the centre of the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. Here we present a dataset on the availability of carbon, nitrogen, magnesium, aluminium, silicon, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, manganese and iron in the soils along this transect at 16 sampling points. Our data clearly show that the nutrient availability in the soils along this transect strongly differs with higher values of aluminium, silicon, potassium and calcium near the border of Serengeti National Park. These differences in soil nutrient availability might be the reason for different nutrient content in grassland biomass in certain areas, hence potentially affecting the migration of the herds of large herbivores as found by other studies. As our dataset is not comprehensive, we call for collection and analysis of more samples and also soil profile analysis in this area as our dataset is limited.
