Given the current lack of experimental data for shock waves interacting with incoming transitional boundary layers, the goal of this study was to characterize the dynamics of such an interaction to better understand the fundamental fluid physics of these complex phenomena. Here, the mean flow field and time-dependent characteristics of a three-dimensional Mach 5 cylinder-induced shock-wave/boundary-layer interaction where the upstream boundary layer is transitional, have been studied experimentally. The interactions were generated with a right circular cylinder mounted on a flat plate. Streamwise–spanwise planar laser scattering from a condensed alcohol fog and schlieren imaging were used to characterize the mean and instantaneous structure of the interaction, and fast-response wall-pressure measurements on the centreline upstream of the cylinder enabled characterization of the unsteadiness. The pressure measurements show a mean pressure profile that resembles a composite of an upstream laminar profile and a downstream turbulent profile. The upstream influence location of the transitional interaction was approximately 8.5 diameters ($d$) upstream of the cylinder leading edge, which is between that of a laminar and a turbulent interaction, and is followed by a plateau region to approximately $4d$ upstream of the cylinder. The plateau region is a region with a thicker boundary layer and possible flow separation. The plateau pressure was within 7 % of the value predicted by Hill's correlation for free-interaction phenomena. Furthermore, a statistical analysis of the pressure histories suggests that the entire interaction stretches and contracts in concert. Power spectral densities of the pressure fluctuations showed unsteadiness throughout the interaction with energy content primarily centred between a region defined by a separation-length-based Strouhal number $St_{L} = 0.05\text {--}0.2$, comparing well with other related studies of cylinder-induced interactions. Cross-correlations and coherence functions in the interaction suggest that the unsteadiness in the laminar region may be due to the entire ‘laminar’ region oscillating in response to the ‘turbulent’ unsteadiness of the intermittent region.

The typical marine animal has increased in biovolume by more than two orders of magnitude since the beginning of the Cambrian, but the causes of this trend remain unknown. We test the hypothesis that the efficiency of intra-organism oxygen delivery is a major constraint on body-size evolution in marine animals. To test this hypothesis, we compiled a dataset comprising 13,723 marine animal genera spanning the Phanerozoic. We coded each genus according to its respiratory medium, circulatory anatomy, and feeding mode. In extant genera, we find that respiratory medium and circulatory anatomy explain more of the difference in size than feeding modes. Likewise, we find that most of the Phanerozoic increase in mean biovolume is accounted for by size increase in taxa that accomplish oxygen delivery through closed circulatory systems. During the Cambrian, water-breathing animals with closed circulatory systems were smaller, on average, than contemporaries with open circulatory systems. However, genera with closed circulatory systems superseded in size genera with open circulatory systems by the Middle Ordovician, as part of their Phanerozoic-long trend of increasing size. In a regression analysis, respiratory and circulatory anatomy explain far more size variation in the living fauna than do feeding modes, even after accounting for taxonomic affinity at the class level. These findings suggest that ecological and environmental drivers of the Phanerozoic increase in the mean size of marine animals operated within strong, anatomically determined constraints.

Background:
Delirium is heterogeneous and can vary by etiology.
Objectives:We sought to determine how delirium subtyped by etiology affected six-month function and cognition.
Design:Prospective cohort study.
Setting:Tertiary care, academic medical center.
Participants:A total of 228 hospitalized patients > 65 years old were admitted from the emergency department (ED).
Measurements:The modified Brief Confusion Assessment Method was used to determine delirium in the ED. Delirium etiology was determined by three trained physician reviewers using a Delirium Etiology checklist. Pre-illness and six-month function and cognition were determined using the Older American Resources and Services Activities of Daily Living (OARS ADL) questionnaire and the short-form Informant Questionnaire on Cognitive Decline in the Elderly (IQCODE). Multiple linear regression was performed to determine if delirium etiology subtypes were associated with six-month function and cognition adjusted for baseline OARS ADL and IQCODE. Two-factor interactions were incorporated to determine pre-illness function or cognition-modified relationships between delirium subtypes and six-month function and cognition.
Results:In patients with poorer pre-illness function only, delirium secondary to metabolic disturbance (β coefficient = −2.9 points, 95%CI: −0.3 to −5.6) and organ dysfunction (β coefficient = −4.3 points, 95%CI: −7.2 to −1.4) was significantly associated with poorer six-month function. In patients with intact cognition only, delirium secondary to central nervous system insults was significantly associated with poorer cognition (β coefficient = 0.69, 95%CI: 0.19 to 1.20).
Conclusions:Delirium is heterogeneous and different etiologies may have different prognostic implications. Furthermore, the effect of these delirium etiologies on outcome may be dependent on the patient's pre-illness functional status and cognition.

The horticultural industry is an important source of invasive ornamental plant species, which is part of the motivation for an increased emphasis on using native alternatives. We were interested in the possibility that plants marketed in the midwestern United States as the native Celastrus scandens, or American bittersweet, were actually the difficult-to-distinguish invasive Celastrus orbiculatus (oriental bittersweet) or hybrids of the two species. We used nuclear microsatellite DNA loci to compare the genetic identities of 34 plants from 11 vendors with reference plants from wild populations of known species identity. We found that 18 samples (53%) were mislabeled, and 7 of the 11 vendors sold mislabeled plants. Mislabeled plants were more likely to be purchased through Internet or phone order shipments and were significantly less expensive than accurately labeled plants. Vendors marketed mislabeled plants under five different cultivar names, as well as unnamed strains. Additionally, the most common native cultivar, ‘Autumn Revolution,’ displays reproductive characteristics that diverge from the typical C. scandens, which could be of some concern. The lower price and abundance of mislabeled invasive plants introduces incentives for consumers to unknowingly contribute to the spread of C. orbiculatus. Revealing the potential sources of C. orbiculatus is critical for controlling further spread of the invasive vine and limiting its impact on C. scandens populations.

Background:
Blunt cerebrovascular injury (BCVI) to the carotid and vertebral arteries is a potentially devastating injury in trauma patients. The optimal management for BCVI has not been standardized. At our institution, 64-slice multi-detector computed tomographic angiography (CTA) has been used as the initial screening exam for BCVI in patients who met predefined screening criteria. The purpose of this study is to review the incidence of CTA-diagnosed BCVI in at-risk patients and to evaluate the treatment and clinical outcome of patients with BCVI.
Methods:This study included trauma patients with a positive diagnosis of BCVI on CTA during a 41-month study period. The medical records and relevant radiographic findings were retrospectively reviewed.
Results:Twenty seven of 222 blunt trauma patients evaluated with CTA had a positive diagnosis of BCVI, with an occurrence rate of 12.2%. Traumatic brain injury (72.2%) and basal skull fractures (55.6%) were the most frequent associated injuries with carotid trauma while 100% of blunt vertebral injuries occurred in the setting of cervical fractures. Fourteen (51.8%) patients received medical therapy; Eleven (40.7%) patients received conservative treatment. Endovascular treatment was attempted in a single case of vertebral arteriovenous fistula. BCVI-related stroke was found in four patients (14.8%), one of whom developed an infarct while on medical treatment.
Conclusions:BCVI is found in a significant portion of blunt trauma patients with identifiable risk factors, and screening CTA has high diagnostic yield in detecting these lesions. Medical therapy is the mainstay of treatment at our institution; however, BCVI-related stroke may occur despite treatment.

Summary
Executive Summary
Disasters are most acutely experienced at the local level (high agreement, robust evidence). The reality of disasters in terms of loss of life and property occurs in local places and to local people. These localized impacts can then cascade to have national and international consequences. In this chapter, local refers to a range of places, social groupings, experience, management, institutions, conditions, and sets of knowledge that exist at a sub-national scale. [5.1]
Developing strategies for disaster risk management in the context of climate change requires a range of approaches, informed by and customized to specific local circumstances (high agreement, robust evidence). These differences and the context (national to global, urban to rural) in which they are situated shape local vulnerability and local impacts. [5.1]
The impacts of climate extremes and weather events may threaten human security at the local level (high agreement, medium evidence). Vulnerability at the local level is attributed to social, political, and economic conditions and drivers including localized environmental degradation and climate change. Addressing disaster risk and climate extremes at the local level requires attention to much wider issues relating to sustainable development. [5.1]
While structural measures provide some protection from disasters, they may also create a false sense of safety (high agreement, robust evidence). Such measures result in increased property development, heightened population density, and more disaster exposure. Current regulations and design levels for structural measures may be inadequate under conditions of climate change. [5.3.2]

Amorphous thin films of composition TixSi1−xO2 have been grown by low pressure chemical vapor deposition on silicon (100) substrates using Si(OEt)4 and either Ti(OiPr)4 or anhydrous Ti(NO3)4 as the sources of SiO2 and TiO2, respectively. The substrate temperature was varied between 300 and 535°C, and the precursor flow rates ranged from 5 to 100 sccm. Under these conditions growth rates ranging from 0.6 to 90.0 nm/min were observed. Films were amorphous to X-rays as deposited and SEM micrographs showed smooth, featureless film surfaces. Cross-sectional TEM showed no compositional inhomogeneity. RBS revealed that x (from the formula TixSi1−xO2) was dependent upon the choice of TiO2 precursor. For films grown using TTIP-TEOS x could be varied by systematic variation of the flow of N2 through the precursor vessels or the deposition temperature. For the case of TN-TEOS x remained close to 0.5. The results suggested the existence of a specific chemical reaction between TN and TEOS prior to film deposition.
The CVD of zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) films from zirconium tetra-tert-butoxide {Zr[OC(CH3)3]4} is also described. The films, which were deposited on Si(100), were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), ellipsometry, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy (RBS). Deposition was studied between ∼380 and 825 °C, and at precursor pressures between 4 × 10−5 and 1 × 10−4 Torr. The kinetics for steady-state growth were studied as functions of temperature and precursor pressure. Results were fit to a two-step kinetic model involving reversible precursor adsorption followed by irreversible decomposition to ZrO2.
