Noradrenergic activation in the central and peripheral nervous systems is a putative mechanism explaining the link between hypertension and affective disorders.
Aims
We investigated whether these stress-sensitive comorbidities may be dependent on basal noradrenergic activity and whether vascular responses to centrally acting stimuli vary according to noradrenergic activity.
Method
We examined the relation of affective disorders and stress-mediated vascular responses to plasma concentrations of normetanephrine, a measure of noradrenergic activity, in subjects with primary hypertension (n = 100, mean ± s.d. age 43 ± 11 years, 54% male). The questionnaires Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), 16-item Quick Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology-Self Report (QIDSSR-16) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) were used for evaluation of symptoms of depression and anxiety. Forearm blood flow (strain gauge plethysmography) was used to assess vascular responses to mental stress and to device-guided breathing (DGB), interventions that respectively increase or decrease noradrenergic activity in the prefrontal cortex and locus coeruleus.
Results
Low mood and high anxiety were two- to threefold higher for hypertensive subjects in the highest compared with the lowest normetanephrine tertiles (each P < 0.005). Forearm vasodilator responses to mental stress and vasoconstrictor responses to DGB were attenuated in those with high compared with low normetanephrine (28.3 ± 21% v. 47.1 ± 30% increases for mental stress and 3.7 ± 21% v. 18.6 ± 15% decreases for DGB for highest versus lowest tertiles of normetanephrine, each P ≤ 0.01).
Conclusions
A hyperadrenergic state in hypertension is associated with mood disturbance and impaired stress-modulated vasomotor responses. This association may be mediated by chronic stress impinging on pathways regulating central arousal and peripheral sympathetic nerve activity.
The Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN) provides independent advice on nutrition and related health matters to UK government organisations. In keeping with its commitment to openness and transparency, SACN follows a set ‘Framework’ to ensure a prescribed and consistent approach is taken in all its evidence evaluations. Following an update of the SACN Framework in 2020, which addressed some straightforward issues, the SACN Framework subgroup was established in 2021 to consider more complex matters that were not addressed in the 2020 update. The SACN Framework subgroup considered 4 main topics for update: 1) the different types of evidence evaluations produced by SACN, 2) interpretation of statistical data, 3) tools for assessment of study quality, 4) tools to assess the certainty of a body of evidence for exposure-outcome relationships. The Framework subgroup agreed clear definitions and processes for the different types of evidence evaluations produced by SACN and agreed that interpretation of p values should be informed by consideration of study size, power and methodological quality. The subgroup recommended use of the AMSTAR 2 tool for quality assessment of evidence from systematic reviews and use of the GRADE approach to assess the certainty of evidence. The updated Framework was published in January 2023. This was followed by publication of a further update in October 2024. As a ‘living’ document, the Framework will be subject to regular review by the Framework subgroup and continue to evolve in line with best practice.
New Zealand and Australian governments rely heavily on voluntary industry initiatives to improve population nutrition, such as voluntary front-of-pack nutrition labelling (Health Star Rating [HSR]), industry-led food advertising standards, and optional food reformulation programmes. Research in both countries has shown that food companies vary considerably in their policies and practices on nutrition(1). We aimed to determine if a tailored nutrition support programme for food companies improved their nutrition policies and practices compared with control companies who were not offered the programme. REFORM was a 24-month, two-country, cluster-randomised controlled trial. 132 major packaged food/drink manufacturers (n=96) and fast-food companies (n=36) were randomly assigned (2:1 ratio) to receive a 12-month tailored support programme or to the control group (no intervention). The intervention group was offered a programme designed and delivered by public health academics comprising regular meetings, tailored company reports, and recommendations and resources to improve product composition (e.g., reducing nutrients of concern through reformulation), nutrition labelling (e.g., adoption of HSR labels), marketing to children (reducing the exposure of children to unhealthy products and brands) and improved nutrition policy and corporate sustainability reporting. The primary outcome was the nutrient profile (measured using HSR) of company food and drink products at 24 months. Secondary outcomes were the nutrient content (energy, sodium, total sugar, and saturated fat) of company products, display of HSR labels on packaged products, company nutrition-related policies and commitments, and engagement with the intervention. Eighty-eight eligible intervention companies (9,235 products at baseline) were invited to participate, of whom 21 accepted and were enrolled in the REFORM programme (delivered between September 2021 and December 2022). Forty-four companies (3,551 products at baseline) were randomised to the control arm. At 24 months, the model-adjusted mean HSR of intervention company products was 2.58 compared to 2.68 for control companies, with no significant difference between groups (mean difference -0.10, 95% CI -0.40 to 0.21, p-value 0.53). A per protocol analysis of intervention companies who enrolled in the programme compared to control companies with no major protocol violation also found no significant difference (2.93 vs 2.64, mean difference 0.29, 95% CI -0.13 to 0.72, p-value 0.18). We found no significant differences between the intervention and control groups in any secondary outcome, except in total sugar (g/100g) where the sugar content of intervention company products was higher than that of control companies (12.32 vs 6.98, mean difference 5.34, 95% CI 1.73 to 8.96, p-value 0.004). The per-protocol analysis for sugar did not show a significant difference (10.47 vs 7.44, mean difference 3.03, 95% CI -0.48 to 6.53, p-value 0.09).In conclusion, a 12-month tailored nutrition support for food companies did not improve the nutrient profile of company products.
We investigate the evolution of active galactic nucleus jets on kiloparsec-scales due to their interaction with the clumpy interstellar medium (ISM) of the host galaxy and, subsequently, the surrounding circumgalactic environment. Hydrodynamic simulations of this jet–environment interaction are presented for a range of jet kinetic powers, peak densities of the multiphase ISM, and scale radii of the larger-scale environment – characteristic of either a galaxy cluster or poor group. Synthetic radio images are generated by considering the combination of synchrotron radiation from the jet plasma and free-free absorption from the multiphase ISM. We find that jet propagation is slowed by interactions with a few very dense clouds in the host galaxy ISM, producing asymmetries in lobe length and brightness which persist to scales of tens of kpc for poor group environments. The classification of kiloparsec-scale jets is highly dependent on surface brightness sensitivity and resolution. Our simulations of young active sources can appear as restarted sources, showing double-double lobe morphology, high core prominence (CP $\gt 0.1$), and the expected radio spectra for both the inner- and outer-lobe components. We qualitatively reproduce the observed inverse correlation between peak frequency and source size and find that the peak frequency of the integrated radio spectrum depends on ISM density but not the jet power. Spectral turnover in resolved young radio sources therefore provides a new probe of the ISM.
Background: Glioma trials may use selective criteria, limiting their generalizability to real-world patients. This systematic review and meta-analysis quantifies the prevalence of these criteria and evaluates their impact on trial outcomes, assessing whether reducing selectivity to improve generalizability and applicability is feasible without compromising safety or efficacy. Methods: 51 glioma trials were extracted from the National Clinical Trial (NCT) database on June 1st, 2024. Eligibility criteria were classified as selective—defined as likely to exclude patients who could benefit, or generalizable—justified due to potential harm or trial focus. The selective criteria were analyzed for correlation with median overall survival (mOS). Results: The average number of selective criteria per study was 6.8 (range: 0–14, median: 7). The most common were “No prior malignancy with a specified disease-free period” (N=29), “Exclusion based on Karnofsky score” (N=27), and “No prior brain radiotherapy” (N=16). Meta-analysis showed no significant correlation between the number of selective criteria and mOS (p = .327). Conclusions: Selective criteria are common in glioma trials, particularly exclusions based on prior malignancies, performance status, and past treatments. However, their lack of correlation with mOS indicates minimal impact on outcomes. These findings suggest reducing selectivity in trial criteria may improve generalizability and applicability without compromising safety or efficacy.
Depression is a complex mental health disorder with highly heterogeneous symptoms that vary significantly across individuals, influenced by various factors, including sex and regional contexts. Network analysis is an analytical method that provides a robust framework for evaluating the heterogeneity of depressive symptoms and identifying their potential clinical implications.
Objective:
To investigate sex-specific differences in the network structures of depressive symptoms in Asian patients diagnosed with depressive disorders, using data from the Research on Asian Psychotropic Prescription Patterns for Antidepressants, Phase 3, which was conducted in 2023.
Methods:
A network analysis of 10 depressive symptoms defined according to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidelines was performed. The sex-specific differences in the network structures of the depressive symptoms were examined using the Network Comparison Test. Subgroup analysis of the sex-specific differences in the network structures was performed according to geographical region classifications, including East Asia, Southeast Asia, and South or West Asia.
Results:
A total of 998 men and 1,915 women with depression were analysed in this study. The analyses showed that all 10 depressive symptoms were grouped into a single cluster. Low self-confidence and loss of interest emerged as the most central nodes for men and women, respectively. In addition, a significant difference in global strength invariance was observed between the networks. In the regional subgroup analysis, only East Asian men showed two distinct clustering patterns. In addition, significant differences in global strength and network structure were observed only between East Asian men and women.
Conclusion:
The study highlights the sex-specific differences in depressive symptom networks across Asian countries. The results revealed that low self-confidence and loss of interest are the main symptoms of depression in Asian men and women, respectively. The network connections were more localised in men, whereas women showed a more diverse network. Among the Asian subgroups analysed, only East Asians exhibited significant differences in network structure. The considerable effects of neurovegetative symptoms in men may indicate potential neurobiological underpinnings of depression in the East Asian population.

Hypertension disorders of pregnancy are a clinical spectrum that includes gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, and eclampsia. Hypertensive disorders are a common cause of significant maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. Therefore, it is important for women’s health clinicians to be knowledgeable of the diagnostic criteria and management guidelines. A 25-year-old gravida 3 para 0 at 35 weeks’ gestation presents with a blood pressure of 165/95, proteinuria, and develops seizures. Based on her clinical presentation, physical examination, and laboratory findings, a diagnosis of eclampsia was made. The patient was promptly stabilized, treated with magnesium sulfate for seizure prophylaxis, received antihypertensive treatment, and delivered in a timely manner. The case highlights the recommended maternal evaluation, fetal surveillance, timing of delivery, and treatment for hypertension disorders of pregnancy.
Commercial targeted sprayer systems allow producers to reduce herbicide inputs but risks the possibility of not treating emerging weeds. Currently, targeted applications with the John Deere system have five spray sensitivity settings, and no published literature discusses the effects of these settings on detecting and spraying weeds of varying species, sizes, and positions in crops. Research was conducted in Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Mississippi, and North Carolina on plantings of corn, cotton, and soybean to determine how various factors might influence the ability of targeted applications to treat weeds. These data included 21 weed species aggregated to six classes with height, width, and densities ranging from 25 to 0.25 cm, 25 to 0.25 cm, and 14.3 to 0.04 plants m−2, respectively. Crop and weed density did not influence the likelihood of treating the weeds. As expected, the sensitivity setting alters the ability to treat weeds. Targeted applications (across sensitivity settings, median weed height and width, and density of 2.4 plants m−2) resulted in a treatment success of 99.6% to 84.4% for Convolvulaceae, 99.1% to 68.8% for decumbent broadleaf weeds, 98.9% to 62.9% for Malvaceae, 99.1% to 70.3% for Poaceae, 98.0% to 48.3% for Amaranthaceae, and 98.5% to 55.8% for yellow nutsedge. Reducing the sensitivity setting reduced the ability to treat weeds. The size of weeds aided targeted application success, with larger weeds being more readily treated through easier detection. Based on these findings, various conditions can affect the outcome of targeted multinozzle applications. Additionally, the analyses highlight some of the parameters to consider when using these technologies.
A major subglacial lake, Lake Snow Eagle (LSE), was identified in East Antarctica by airborne geophysical surveys. LSE, contained within a subglacial canyon, likely hosts a valuable sediment record of the geological and glaciological changes of interior East Antarctica. Understanding past lake activity is crucial for interpreting this record. Here, we present the englacial radiostratigraphy in the LSE area mapped by airborne ice-penetrating radar, which reveals a localized high-amplitude variation in ice unit thickness that is estimated to be ∼12 ka old. Using an ice-flow model that simulates englacial stratigraphy, we investigate the origin of this feature and its relationship to changes in ice dynamical boundary conditions. Our results reveal that local snowfall redistribution initiated around the early Holocene is likely the primary cause, resulting from a short-wavelength (∼10 km) high-amplitude (∼20 m) ice surface slope variation caused by basal lubrication over a large subglacial lake. This finding indicates an increase in LSE water volume during the Holocene, illustrating the sensitivity in volume of a major topographically constrained subglacial lake across a single glacial cycle. This study demonstrates how englacial stratigraphy can provide valuable insight into subglacial hydrological changes before modern satellite observations, both for LSE and potentially at other locations.
Inflammation and infections such as malaria affect concentrations of many micronutrient biomarkers and hence estimates of nutritional status. We aimed to assess the relationship between malaria infection and micronutrient biomarker concentrations in pre-school children (PSC), school-age children (SAC) and women of reproductive age (WRA) in Malawi and examine the potential role of malarial immunity on the relationship between malaria and micronutrient biomarkers. Data from the 2015/2016 Malawi micronutrient survey were used. The associations between current or recent malaria infection, detected by rapid diagnostic test and concentration of serum ferritin, soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR), zinc, serum folate, red blood cell folate and vitamin B12 were estimated using multivariable linear regression. Factors related to malarial immunity including age, altitude and presence of hemoglobinopathies were examined as effect modifiers. Serum ferritin, sTfR and zinc were adjusted for inflammation using the BRINDA method. Malaria infection was associated with 68 % (95 % CI 51, 86), 28 % (18, 40) and 34 % (13, 45) greater inflammation-adjusted ferritin in PSC, SAC and WRA, respectively (P < 0·001 for each). In PSC, the positive association was stronger in younger children, high altitude and children who were not carriers of the sickle cell trait. In PSC and SAC, sTfR was elevated (+ 25 % (16, 29) and + 15 % (9, 22) respectively, P < 0·001). Serum folate and erythrocyte folate were elevated in WRA with malaria (+ 18 % (3, 35) and + 11 % (1, 23), P = 0·01 and P = 0·003 respectively). Malaria affects the interpretation of micronutrient biomarker concentrations, and examining factors related to malarial immunity may be informative.
Objectives/Goals: The Standards for Reporting Implementation Studies (StaRI) are the Enhancing the Quality and Transparency of Health Research (EQUATOR) Network 27-item checklist for Implementation Science. This study quantifies StaRI adherence among self-defined Implementation Science studies in published Learning Health Systems (LHS) research. Methods/Study Population: A medical librarian-designed a search strategy identified original Implementation Science research published in one of the top 20 Implementation Science journals between 2017 and 2021. Inclusion criteria included studies or protocols describing the implementation of any intervention in healthcare settings. Exclusion criteria included concept papers, non-implementation research, or editorials. Full-text documents were reviewed by two investigators to abstract and judge StaRI implementation and intervention adherence, partial adherence, or non-adherence. Results/Anticipated Results: A total of 330 documents were screened, 97 met inclusion criteria, and 47 were abstracted including 30 research studies and 17 protocols. Adherence to individual StaRI reporting items ranged from 13% to 100%. Most StaRI items were reported in >60% of manuscripts and protocols. The lowest adherence in research studies was noted around economic evaluation reporting for implementation (16%) or intervention (13%) strategies, harms (13%), contextual changes (30%), or fidelity of either the intervention (34%) or implementation (53%) approach. Subgroup analyses were infrequently contemplated or reported (43%). In protocols, the implications of the implementation strategy (41%) or intervention approach (47%) were not commonly reported. Discussion/Significance of Impact: When leveraging implementation science to report reproducible and sustainable practice change initiatives, LHS researchers will need to include assessments of economics, harms, context, and fidelity in order to attain higher levels of adherence to EQUATOR’s StaRI checklist.
Migration played a significant role in shaping the Native populations of the southwest United States and northwest Mexico. Large-scale migrations into and across the region were underlain by small-scale (intraregional) population shifts affected by environmental fluctuations (declines and improvements) and social phenomena such as aggregation and the spread of sociopolitical spheres of influence within the region. We compare projectile point types, mortuary patterns, and biodistance information from Early Agricultural period (2100 BC–AD 50) sites to identify subtle differences in population composition associated with the arrival and spread of maize across the region. Small-scale migrations occurring around the foundation of farming communities in the Sonoran Desert may have established the basis of broad regional connectivity, shared historical ties, and subsequent migration patterns and practices. Rooted in early farming traditions and a shared language family, we argue that farmers expanded north and east from the borderlands, then eventually returned to ancestral homelands when environmental and incursive pressures pushed them back south.
Residual herbicides are primarily degraded in the soil through microbial breakdown. Any practices that result in increased soil biological activity, such as cover cropping (between cash crop seasons), could lead to a reduced persistence of herbicides in the soil. Furthermore, cover crops can also interfere with herbicide fate by interception. Field trials were conducted between 2020 and 2023 in a corn (Zea mays L.)–soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] rotation to investigate the influence of cover crop (cereal rye [Secale cereale L.] and crimson clover [Trifolium incarnatum L.]) use on soil enzyme activities (β-glucosidase [BG] and dehydrogenase [DHA]), its effect on the concentration of residual herbicides (sulfentrazone, S-metolachlor, cloransulam-methyl, atrazine, and mesotrione) in the soil, and the interception of herbicides by cover crop residue. The use of cover crops occasionally resulted in increased BG and DHA activities relative to the fallow treatment. However, even when there was an increase in the activity of these two enzymes, increased degradation of the residual herbicides was not observed. The initial concentrations of all residual herbicides in the soil were significantly reduced due to interception by cereal rye biomass. Nevertheless, significant reductions in early-season weed biomass were observed when residual herbicides were included in the tank mixture applied at cover crop termination relative to the application of glyphosate plus glufosinate. Results from this research suggest that the use of cereal rye or crimson clover as cover crops (between cash crop seasons) do not impact the persistence of residual herbicides in the soil or reduce their efficacy in controlling weeds early in the growing season.
The marketing of unhealthy foods has been implicated in poor diet and rising levels of obesity. Rapid developments in the digital food marketing ecosystem and associated research mean that contemporary review of the evidence is warranted. This preregistered (CRD420212337091)1 systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to provide an updated synthesis of the evidence for behavioural and health impacts of food marketing on both children and adults, using the 4Ps framework (Promotion, Product, Price, Place). Ten databases were searched from 2014 to 2021 for primary data articles of quantitative or mixed design, reporting on one or more outcome of interest following food marketing exposure compared with a relevant control. Reviews, abstracts, letters/editorials and qualitative studies were excluded. Eighty-two studies were included in the narrative review and twenty-three in the meta-analyses. Study quality (RoB2/Newcastle–Ottawa scale) was mixed. Studies examined ‘promotion’ (n 55), ‘product’ (n 17), ‘price’ (n 15) and ‘place’ (n 2) (some > 1 category). There is evidence of impacts of food marketing in multiple media and settings on outcomes, including increased purchase intention, purchase requests, purchase, preference, choice, and consumption in children and adults. Meta-analysis demonstrated a significant impact of food marketing on increased choice of unhealthy foods (OR = 2·45 (95 % CI 1·41, 4·27), Z = 3·18, P = 0·002, I2 = 93·1 %) and increased food consumption (standardised mean difference = 0·311 (95 % CI 0·185, 0·437), Z = 4·83, P < 0·001, I2 = 53·0 %). Evidence gaps were identified for the impact of brand-only and outdoor streetscape food marketing, and for data on the extent to which food marketing may contribute to health inequalities which, if available, would support UK and international public health policy development.
Cognitive behavioural therapists and practitioners often feel uncertain about how to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following rape and sexual assault. There are many myths and rumours about what you should and should not do. All too frequently, this uncertainty results in therapists avoiding doing trauma-focused work with these clients. Whilst understandable, this means that the survivor continues to re-experience the rape as flashbacks and/or nightmares. This article outlines an evidence-based cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) approach to treating PTSD following a rape in adulthood. It aims to be a practical, ‘how to’ guide for therapists, drawing on the authors’ decades of experience in this area. We have included film links to demonstrate how to undertake each step of the treatment pathway. Our aim is for CBT practitioners to feel more confident in delivering effective trauma-focused therapy to this client group. We consider how to assess and formulate PTSD following a rape in adulthood, then how to deliver cognitive therapy for PTSD (CT-PTSD; Ehlers and Clark, 2000). We will cover both client and therapist factors when working with memories of rape, as well as legal, social, cultural and interpersonal considerations.

Chang Kang-myoung’s provocatively titled novel Because I Hate Korea (Han’gugi sireoseo) became a best-seller in 2015 and is among the most notable literary works to address rampant dissatisfaction among South Korean millennials. In recent years, Chang, a former journalist (b. 1975), has developed a reputation for adroit and prolific fictionalized expressions of local discontent. Because I Hate Korea reflects a pervasive desire on the part of the nation’s younger people to escape from “Hell Joseon,” a coinage that has attained widespread circulation. This piece briefly introduces the novel, setting it within its wider contemporary context, and then provides a translation of the first chapter.
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) spa type t4549 is increasingly prevalent in Denmark, yet its epidemiological sources remain unclear. This study aimed to generate hypotheses about possible risk factors that may be associated with MRSA t4549 infections. We conducted a nationwide case – case questionnaire study comparing MRSA t4549 cases to other MRSA types (t002, t008, t127, t304, and t223) reported between January 2022 and November 2023. The analysis, which included descriptive statistics and logistic regression, found that 75% of MRSA t4549 cases were male. Infections were significantly more frequent in the foot (28%) and toe (54%) compared to other MRSA types. Key risk factors identified were contact with pheasants (OR = 8.70; 95%CI 1.25–174.29), participation in indoor team sports (OR = 7.54, 95%CI: 1.58–54.82) and swimming (OR = 4.15, 95%CI: 1.97–9.03). Although the limited number of cases warrants cautious interpretation, it is crucial to emphasize the need for preventive measures at both the individual and sports facility levels. Further environmental studies are needed to clarify the role of the environment and wildlife in MRSA t4549 transmission. The increasing prevalence of this spa type in Denmark underlines the importance of implementing effective public health strategies to reduce the risk of MRSA transmission.
Sustained attention is integral to goal-directed tasks in everyday life. It is a demanding and effortful process prone to failure. Deficits are particularly prevalent in mood disorders. However, conventional methods of assessment, rooted in overall measures of performance, neglect the nuanced temporal dimensions inherent in sustained attention, necessitating alternative analytical approaches.
Methods
This study investigated sustained attention deficits and temporal patterns of attentional fluctuation in a large clinical cohort of patients with bipolar depression (BPd, n = 33), bipolar euthymia (BPe, n = 84), major depression (MDd, n = 38) and controls (HC, n = 138) using a continuous performance task (CPT). Longitudinal and spectral analyses were employed to examine trial-level reaction time (RT) data.
Results
Longitudinal analysis revealed a significant worsening of performance over time (vigilance decrement) in BPd, whilst spectral analysis unveiled attentional fluctuations concentrated in the frequency range of 0.077 Hz (1/12.90 s)–0.049 Hz (1/20.24 s), with BPd and MDd demonstrating greater spectral power compared to BPe and controls.
Conclusions
Although speculative, the increased variability in this frequency range may have an association with the dysfunctional activity of the Default Mode Network, which has been shown to oscillate at a similar timescale. These findings underscore the importance of considering the temporal dimensions of sustained attention and show the potential of spectral analysis of RT in future clinical research.
Yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus L.) is one of the most problematic weeds in turfgrass due to its fast growth rate and high tuber production. Effective long-term control relies on translocation of systemic herbicides to underground tubers. Two identical trials were conducted simultaneously in separate greenhouses to evaluate the effect of several acetolactate synthase (ALS)- and protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO)-inhibiting postemergence herbicides on C. esculentus tuber production and viability. Seven tubers were planted into 1-L pots, and plants were allowed to mature for 6 wk before trial initiation. Treatments included pyrimisulfan at 73 g ai ha−1 once or 49 g ai ha−1 twice, imazosulfuron at 736 g ai ha−1 once or 420 g ai ha−1 twice, carfentrazone-ethyl + sulfentrazone at 22 + 198 g ai ha−1 once or 14 + 127 g ai ha−1 twice, halosulfuron at 70 g ai ha−1 once or 35 g ai ha−1 twice, and a nontreated control. Sequential applications were made 3 wk after initial treatment (WAIT) for both trials. Both single and sequential applications of carfentrazone-ethyl + sulfentrazone exhibited the quickest control (80% to 83% 4 WAIT). Two applications of imazosulfuron resulted in the greatest reduction in tuber number (81%) and tuber dry biomass (85%), while one application of carfentrazone-ethyl + sulfentrazone resulted in the greatest reduction in shoot biomass (71%). The viability of tubers that were recovered from each pot was reduced 48% to 70%, with the greatest reduction in response to carfentrazone-ethyl + sulfentrazone. Although two applications of pyrimisulfan only resulted in tuber number and shoot biomass reductions of 66% and 38%, respectively, tuber dry biomass reduction was 80%. Therefore, pyrimisulfan, imazosulfuron, halosulfuron, and carfentrazone-ethyl + sulfentrazone are all viable options for long-term C. esculentus control in turfgrass.
