To determine the prevalence and characteristics of plant-based patterns in the Spanish population and assess their potential impact on individuals with similar sociodemographic backgrounds.
Design:
We estimated vegetarian and vegan individuals’ national and regional prevalence and analyzed their sociodemographic characteristics and weekly dietary intake patterns. Individuals with a plant-based dietary pattern were matched to a control group (1:4) with similar sociodemographic characteristics. Associations with the prevalence risk of common chronic diseases, self-reported health status, lifestyle, and healthcare use were analyzed with unadjusted and adjusted logistic regression models.
Setting:
A population-based survey of individuals residing in Spain.
Participants:
Data from 22,072 participants were examined.
Results:
The prevalence of plant-based diets was 5.62‰ (95% CI: 4.33–7.28), and adherents were female (68.6%), single (62.3%), and university-educated 41.8%) (P< 0.001). They reported higher rates of “never” consuming snacks (50% vs 35%), fast food (58% vs 36%), and sweets (33% vs 14%). Lifestyle factors did not differ between the plant-based and omnivorous groups; however, adherence to plant-based diets was associated with a prevalence risk of depressive symptoms (OR 2.58, 95% CI: 1.00–6.65), stroke (OR 7.08, 95% CI: 1.27–39.46), and increased consultations for mental health and complementary medicine (OR 3.21, 95% CI: 1.38–7.43).
Conclusions:
Plant-based diets are uncommon and are associated with specific sociodemographic profiles, particularly sex. When comparing individuals with similar sociodemographic characteristics, individuals with plant-based diets and omnivores had similar lifestyles. Addressing patient concerns regarding diet and personal well-being might prioritize healthy behaviors over specific dietary patterns.
Human genetic structure of Iberian populations has been thoroughly explored in the last decades. The internal diversity of the Iberian Peninsula becomes visible by the different phylogeographic origins of particular mitochondrial DNA and Y chromosome lineages, which show a high degree of population specificity. In the present study, we combined information on matrilineal and patrilineal variation patterns in two autochthonous populations from Andalusia region (southern Spain). A special focus is made to a male sample set where both uniparental data is available. Gene diversities estimates yielded not statistical significant differences between both types of samples and markers. Genetic ancestry among Andalusians seems to be constituted by three foremost continental origins: European, African and Middle Eastern. The examined male group has revealed a noticeable proportion of individuals (over 45%) with a non-correspondence between maternal and paternal haplogroup origins, a signal of different population demographic histories linked to both sexes in the past. Andalusian males seem to be well differentiated according to ancestries. As expected, mtDNA diversity was much higher than that for Y chromosome, a fact that can be caused by patrilocality, which lead to particular social structures with effects on haploid genomes in modern human populations.
Integrating trees and shrubs into agroecosystems increases soil nutrients and organic matter, which helps in the recovery of degraded tropical soils. However, selecting the most appropriate tree and shrub species as sources of nutrients and organic matter requires knowledge of their productive potential. The study aimed to evaluate litter productivity and nutrient input to the soil of three tropical silvopastoral fodder bank species. Litter input from Tithonia diversifolia, Leucaena leucocephala, and Moringa oleifera was quantified monthly for one year. We found that the litterfall amount was greatest (p < 0.05) from T. diversifolia (1.81 t ha–1 yr–1) compared to L. leucocephala (1.26 t ha–1 yr–1) and M. oleifera (118 t ha–1 yr–1). Indeed, T. diversifolia had a greater (p < 0.05) input of biomass from leaves (1.36 t ha–1 yr–1) compared to L. leucocephala (0.901 t ha–1 yr–1) and M. oleifera (0.869 t ha–1 yr–1). The highest biomass input (p < 0.05) occurred in September to the three species, T. diversifolia (0.516 t ha–1), L. leucocephala (0.243 t ha–1), and M. oleifera (0.233 t ha–1), and the lowest biomass input occurred in March. Furthermore, the greatest annual input of carbon (0.687 t ha–1 yr–1), nitrogen (0.030 t ha–1 yr–1), and phosphorus (0.006 t ha–1 yr–1) to the soil originated from T. diversifolia. Our study showed that T. diversifolia had the greatest capacity to produce biomass that potentially can reintroduce nutrients and contribute to the recovery process of degraded soil due to its high litter productivity, besides, a combination of these three species also improves soil nutrients in fodder banks when do not hauling forage for livestock, contributing to sustainability of system.
This paper presents the design and experimental validation of a robust flight control strategy for quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) based on the Interconnection and Damping Assignment Passivity-Based Control (IDA-PBC) methodology. The proposed approach is specifically tailored to the Parrot Bebop 2, a commercial UAV. The IDA-PBC control law is derived using the Hamiltonian model of the UAV dynamics obtained from experimental data to represent the dynamics of all six degrees of freedom, including translational and rotational motions. The control strategy was validated through numerical simulations and experimental tests conducted in an indoor flight setup using MATLAB, Robot Operating System, and an OptiTrack motion capture system. Numerical and experimental results demonstrate that the controller effectively tracks desired flight trajectories, ensuring stable and robust performance.
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are the first-line treatment for major depressive disorder (MDD), but initial outcomes can be modest.
Aims
To compare SSRI dose optimisation with four alternative second-line strategies in MDD patients unresponsive to an SSRI.
Method
Of 257 participants, 51 were randomised to SSRI dose optimisation (SSRI-Opt), 46 to lithium augmentation (SSRI+Li), 48 to nortriptyline combination (SSRI+NTP), 55 to switch to venlafaxine (VEN) and 57 to problem-solving therapy (SSRI+PST). Primary outcomes were week-6 response/remission rates, assessed by blinded evaluators using the 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS-17). Changes in HDRS-17 scores, global improvement and safety outcomes were also explored. EudraCT No. 2007-002130-11.
Results
Alternative second-line strategies led to higher response (28.2% v. 14.3%, odds ratio = 2.36 [95% CI 1.0–5.6], p = 0.05) and remission (16.9% v. 12.2%, odds ratio = 1.46, [95% CI 0.57–3.71], p = 0.27) rates, with greater HDRS-17 score reductions (−2.6 [95% CI −4.9 to −0.4], p = 0.021]) than SSRI-Opt. Significant/marginally significant effects were only observed in both response rates and HDRS-17 decreases for VEN (odds ratio = 2.53 [95% CI 0.94–6.80], p = 0.067; HDRS-17 difference: −2.7 [95% CI −5.5 to 0.0], p = 0.054) and for SSRI+PST (odds ratio = 2.46 [95% CI 0.92 to 6.62], p = 0.074; HDRS-17 difference: −3.1 [95% CI −5.8 to −0.3], p = 0.032). The SSRI+PST group reported the fewest adverse effects, while SSRI+NTP experienced the most (28.1% v. 75%; p < 0.01), largely mild.
Conclusions
Patients with MDD and insufficient response to SSRIs would benefit from any other second-line strategy aside from dose optimisation. With limited statistical power, switching to venlafaxine and adding psychotherapy yielded the most consistent results in the DEPRE'5 study.
Prolonged childhood and adolescent loneliness (CAL) is linked to various adverse mental health outcomes, yet its impact on schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD) has been understudied. While loneliness is associated with psychosis and worsens symptoms in SSD, few studies have explored the long-term effects of early loneliness on SSD risk. Understanding how CAL interacts with genetic liability to schizophrenia is essential for identification of high-risk individuals.
Aims
This study evaluated whether prolonged CAL is associated with increased SSD risk and examined the interaction between CAL and genetic liability for schizophrenia. Gender differences in these associations were also explored.
Method
Data from the European Gene–Environment Interactions in Schizophrenia (EU-GEI) study were analysed, including 1261 individuals with SSD, 1282 unaffected siblings and 1525 healthy controls. CAL was retrospectively assessed for periods before age 12 years and age 12–16 years. Genetic risk was measured using polygenic risk scores for schizophrenia. Logistic regression models and the Relative Excess Risk due to Interaction (RERI) method were used to examine gene–environment interactions, with stratification by gender.
Results
Prolonged CAL was associated with higher odds of SSD (odds ratio [95% CI] = 5.20 [3.85−7.01] for loneliness before age 12; odds ratio [95% CI] = 7.26 [5.63−9.38] for loneliness during adolescence). The interaction between CAL and genetic risk was strongest during adolescence (RERI [95% CI] = 23.46 [10.75−53.53]). Females showed a greater effect (odds ratio [95 %CI] = 10.04 [6.80−14.94]) than males (odds ratio [95% CI] = 5.50 [3.95−7.66]). Incorporating CAL and genetic interaction increased predictive values to 17% for SSD risk − rising to 22.5% in females − compared with 2.6 and 2.8%, respectively, for genetic risk alone.
Conclusions
Prolonged CAL significantly increases SSD risk, particularly in females. The inclusion of CAL alongside genetic risk substantially enhances predictive accuracy. Early identification of CAL could inform preventive strategies, especially in genetically vulnerable populations.
To determine the minimum cost and affordability of three levels of diet quality in urban households in Cali, Colombia: a caloric-adequate diet, a nutrient-adequate diet, and a recommended diet.
Design
Least-cost diets were estimated for different demographic groups. The Cost of Caloric Adequacy (CoCA) and the Cost of Nutrient Adequacy (CoNA) were computed using linear programming models. The Cost of Recommended Diet (CoRD) adheres to Colombia’s Food-Based Dietary Guidelines. Individualized costs were aggregated for a representative household, and affordability was assessed by comparing these costs with household food expenditures. Data sources included the National Administrative Department of Statistics, the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, and the Colombia Institute of Family Welfare.

Results
The CoNA per 1,000 kcal indicates that women require more nutrient-dense diets than men. Limiting nutrients include vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin B12, and calcium. Three food groups ―(1) meat, eggs, legumes, nuts, and seeds; (2) milk and dairy products; and (3) vegetables and fruits― account for about 70% of the CoRD. The affordability analysis shows that 42.66% of households in the 10th income percentile cannot afford the CoCA, none below the 20th percentile can afford the CoNA, and only those above the 40th percentile can afford the CoRD.
Conclusions:
Urban households face significant barriers not only to affording diets that promote long-term health, but also to those that meet nutritional requirements.
Effective conservation management of threatened species with transboundary distributions is a challenge, requiring international coordination to ensure that country-specific actions align with regional imperatives. Many international conservation efforts overlook species needing attention and fail to incorporate the field expertise of local researchers in regional-level assessments. Here we focus on the taruka Hippocamelus antisensis, a threatened and little-studied deer of the Central Andes Ecoregion in South America. Since 2016, experts, managers and governmental authorities from all countries encompassing the species’ range have gathered to collate information about its presence and coordinate efforts to conserve it. We constructed taruka distribution models using historical records and more recent sightings reported during the last 50 years. Our findings revealed several critical insights: slope, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) during the dry season, and daily and seasonal temperature variability are primary predictors of taruka distribution, and the largest part of its range is in Peru (54%), followed by Bolivia (30%), Argentina (10%) and Chile (6%). The species’ core distribution is confined to the western and eastern limits of the Central Andes Ecoregion, bordered by the Sechura and Atacama Desert to the west and the Yungas Forest to the east. Protection is limited, with only 12 and 8% of the core and non-core areas, respectively, of the species’ range under formal protection. We recommend safeguarding connectivity of the core distribution by establishing transboundary protected areas, improving taruka coexistence with local communities, strengthening and formalizing international collaboration amongst taruka experts and raising the species’ appeal amongst policymakers and the public. In particular, we hope to encourage international collaboration between Southern Hemisphere specialists. This is important because these researchers have extensive field knowledge that could improve global conservation efforts, especially in regions that lack adequate conservation funding.
Previous studies have shown the importance of self-perceptions of aging in predicting psychological distress throughout the life cycle. However, little is known about the processes through which self-perceptions of aging influence distress. The aim of the present study is to analyze the potential indirect effects of perceived control and pleasant activities in the association between self-perceptions of aging and depression and anxiety symptoms in middle-aged and older adults. A total of 315 people over 40 years of age (Mage = 58.8; SD = 10.8; 67.9% women) participated. Two indirect effects analysis models were conducted in serial with the aim of analyzing the role of perceived control and pleasant activities in the relationship between the self-perceptions of aging and depressive (model 1) and anxiety (model 2) symptomatology. A direct effect was observed between self-perceptions of aging and depressive, and anxious symptomatology. In addition, indirect associations through the variables perceived control and pleasant activities were significant. The tested models explained 46.1% of the variance in depressive symptomatology and 34.8% of the variance in anxiety. The results of this study confirm the association between self-perceptions of aging and psychological distress. This association is exerted through lower perception of control and fewer pleasant activities. Interventions aimed at promoting effective coping strategies that favor perceived control, activity and emotional well-being should include a module on identifying and modifying of negative self-perceptions of aging in middle-aged and older adults.
One of the most relevant risk factors for suicide is the presence of previous attempts. The symptomatic profile of people who reattempt suicide deserves attention. Network analysis is a promising tool to study this field.
Objective
To analyze the symptomatic network of patients who have attempted suicide recently and compare networks of people with several attempts and people with just one at baseline.
Methods
1043 adult participants from the Spanish cohort “SURVIVE” were part of this study. Participants were classified into two groups: single attempt group (n = 390) and reattempt group (n = 653). Different network analyses were carried out to study the relationships between suicidal ideation, behavior, psychiatric symptoms, diagnoses, childhood trauma, and impulsivity. A general network and one for each subgroup were estimated.
Results
People with several suicide attempts at baseline scored significantly higher across all clinical scales. The symptomatic networks were equivalent in both groups of patients (p > .05). Although there were no overall differences between the networks, some nodes were more relevant according to group belonging.
Conclusions
People with a history of previous attempts have greater psychiatric symptom severity but the relationships between risk factors show the same structure when compared with the single attempt group. All risk factors deserve attention regardless of the number of attempts, but assessments can be adjusted to better monitor the occurrence of reattempts.
Patient participation in health technology assessment (HTA) plays an increasingly relevant role due to increased recognition of its essential contribution to addressing uncertainties in evidence and its real-world application. The objective is to analyze and describe how patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) participate in the evaluation of transcutaneous capnography (TC) in the primary care setting.
Methods
The Spanish Association of Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease facilitated contact with three COPD expert patients. A face-to-face video interview was conducted with each patient to know about their knowledge of the technology, real-life experiences, and expectations. Patients were informed of the objective of the evaluation and signed confidentiality and conflict of interest forms. All interviews were conducted in April 2023 by two researchers. Expert patients with COPD were able to participate in the review of the protocol and in the final version of the report. Literature searches were also conducted on patient perceptions of TC compared to arterial blood CO2 measurement.
Results
All patients were male, older than 60 years and were ex-smokers with greater than 30 years of tobacco consumption. Patients highlighted the relevance of early detection of COPD to facilitate the planning and organization of treatment as their clinical situation progresses. Likewise, they also emphasized the importance of the implementation of less invasive tests, and the proximity and accessibility of primary care. Two studies reported greater patient satisfaction and less pain with TC than with arterial blood gases.
Conclusions
Expert patients show high expectations for the technology, as it is less invasive than arterial blood gases; they also acknowledged its proximity in primary care settings and the potential for detecting complications of oxygen therapy. Patient participation in HTA adds intangible value, as they provide “disease-specific knowledge” and real-life applicability of the technology.
Mitral regurgitation (MR) is the most prevalent valvular heart disease worldwide and is frequently underdiagnosed and undertreated, resulting in a substantial healthcare burden. This project aimed to define an optimized patient journey, identifying specific unmet needs and pain points in the management of MR in Spain, and to propose a set of recommendations that can be implemented at a clinical level.
Methods
Using the Population, Intervention, Comparator, and Outcomes search strategy, a pragmatic literature review was conducted to contextualize the comprehensive management of patients with MR in Spain. Subsequently, a Delphi panel consisting of two rounds of questionnaires was implemented. Unmet needs detected for MR management along the patient journey were validated by a panel of clinical experts incorporating different profiles. A battery of actions to improve the MR patient journey was also gathered (first round), which were then systematically reviewed and prioritized by the experts using hierarchical point allocation methods (second round) based on their relevance and feasibility within the National Health System.
Results
A set of actions was proposed for the following core phases: detection-diagnosis, treatment-decision, treatment, and follow up. Actions for detection-diagnosis should be prioritized since boosting patient referral to specialized centers was considered crucial. Within the treatment-decision stage, experts emphasized strengthening healthcare services communication and training on risk stratification. For treatment, early referral to specialized centers was prioritized. Optimizing follow up required educating patients and relatives on adherence and self-care. Finally, experts supported a common pathway for heart valve diseases such as MR, tricuspid regurgitation, and aortic stenosis. Specifically, they concluded that optimization of tricuspid regurgitation management aligned with the actions proposed for MR.
Conclusions
Altogether, unmet needs and critical aspects in each of the management steps of MR in Spain were detected and an array of potential actions was suggested by clinical experts. The evaluation of such actions resulted in a preliminary strategic plan that can help prioritize interventions and healthcare policies regarding the optimization of the healthcare journey for patients with MR (and other valvulopathies) in Spain.
Suicidal behavior constitutes a multi-cause phenomenon that may also be present in people without a mental disorder. This study aims to analyze suicidal behavior outcomes in a sample of attempters, from a symptom-based approach.
Methods
The sample comprised 673 patients (72% female; M = 40.9 years) who attended a hospital emergency department due to a suicide attempt. A wide range of clinical factors (e.g., psychopathology symptoms, psychiatric diagnoses, impulsivity, acquired capability), was administered within 15 days after the index attempt. Nine psychopathology domains were explored to identify the profile of symptoms, using latent profile analysis. The relationship between the profile membership and suicide outcome (i.e., intensity of suicidal ideation, number of suicide behaviors, and medical injury derived from index attempt) was also studied, using linear and logistic regression.
Results
Three psychopathology profiles were identified: high-symptom profile (45.02% of participants), moderate-symptom profile (42.50%), and low-symptom profile (12.48%). High-symptom profile members were more likely to show higher risk of non-suicidal self-injury, acquired capability for suicide, and more severe suicide behavior and ideation. On the other hand, a more severe physical injury was associated with low-symptom profile membership in comparison to membership from the other profiles (OR < 0.45, p < .05).
Conclusions
A symptom-based approach may be useful to monitor patients and determine the risk of attempt repetition in the future and potential medical injury, and to optimize prevention and intervention strategies.
From early on, infants show a preference for infant-directed speech (IDS) over adult-directed speech (ADS), and exposure to IDS has been correlated with language outcome measures such as vocabulary. The present multi-laboratory study explores this issue by investigating whether there is a link between early preference for IDS and later vocabulary size. Infants’ preference for IDS was tested as part of the ManyBabies 1 project, and follow-up CDI data were collected from a subsample of this dataset at 18 and 24 months. A total of 341 (18 months) and 327 (24 months) infants were tested across 21 laboratories. In neither preregistered analyses with North American and UK English, nor exploratory analyses with a larger sample did we find evidence for a relation between IDS preference and later vocabulary. We discuss implications of this finding in light of recent work suggesting that IDS preference measured in the laboratory has low test-retest reliability.
Understanding the relationships between cetaceans and their environment is crucial for conservation. This study examined humpback whales in Bahía de Banderas, Mexico, identifying key calving habitats. From 2018 to 2023, 1066 sightings were recorded, including 242 mother–calf groups, 109 mating groups, and 715 other groups. Spatial analysis revealed a non-random distribution; both the Kruskal–Wallis and Wilcoxon–Mann–Whitney tests detected significant differences (P < 0.05) in site preferences. Calving mothers favoured habitats with a mean depth of 59 m and a distance of 2 km from the coast, while mating groups preferred locations at 126 m and 4 km, and other groups chose areas at 149 m and 4 km. All groups were found in relatively flat areas around 2° seafloor slope. A dispersion test indicated a significant relationship between the location of calving mothers and environmental factors. K-means clustering showed 83.6% of calving mothers' sightings at depths less than 40 m and 2 km from the coast. Ensemble species distribution models identified three critical calving areas: one large area (261.8 km2) along the north coast and two smaller areas (9.5 and 5.4 km2) at the southern end of the bay. This study highlights Bahía de Banderas as a vital breeding habitat for humpback whales, providing insights for conservation strategies to protect calving grounds during the breeding season.
Patients with schizophrenia die decades earlier than the general population. Among the factors involved in this mortality gap, evidence suggests a telomere length shortening in this clinical population, which is associated with premature ageing. Recent studies support the use of strength-based training exercise programmes to maintain, or even elongate, telomere length in healthy elderly populations. However, studies aiming at modifying telomere length in severe mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia, are still very scarce.
Aims
To investigate the effect of a strength-based physical exercise programme on the telomere length of individuals with schizophrenia.
Method
We propose a pragmatic, randomised controlled trial including 40 patients aged ≥18 years, with a stable diagnosis of schizophrenia, attending the Complejo de Rehabilitación Psicosocial (CRPS, Psychosocial Rehabilitation Centre) in Salamanca, Spain. These patients will be randomly assigned (1:1) to either receive the usual treatment and rehabilitation programmes offered by CRPS (treatment-as-usual group) or these plus twice weekly sessions of an evidence-based, strength-based training exercise programme for 12 weeks (intervention group). The primary outcome will be effect on telomere length. Secondary outcomes will include impact on cognitive function, frailty and quality of life.
Results
We expect to show the importance of implementing strength-based physical exercise programmes for patients with schizophrenia. We could find that such programmes induce biological and genetic changes that may lengthen life expectancy and decrease physical fragility.
Conclusions
We anticipate that our trial findings could contribute to parity of esteem for mental health, reducing premature ageing in patients with severe mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia.
