A new species of bothriocephalid cestode in the genus Anantrum is described from the intestine of the shorthead lizardfish Synodus scituliceps from the north Pacific coast of Costa Rica. The new species is described based on an integrative taxonomic approach that includes the use of light and scanning electron microscopy, 28S rDNA sequencing, and phylogenetic analysis. Anantrum gallopintoi sp. nov. is the third known member of this genus and can be distinguished from A. tortum (Linton, 1905) and A. histocephalum Jensen & Heckmann, 1977 by a combination of morphological and ecological traits and, in particular, by having a vaginal sphincter, different number of testes, and different type host and type locality. The molecular analysis and the phylogenetic reconstructions supported its status as a new taxon placing it within a well-supported separate branch of Anantrum spp. subclade. According to the present finding, S. scituliceps represents a new host record and Costa Rica a new geographical record for Anantrum species, and, in general, for a bothriocephalid cestode.
The global prevalence of persons living with dementia will soon exceed 50 million. Most of these individuals reside in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). In South Africa, one such LMIC, the physician-to-patient ratio of 9:10 000 severely limits the capacity of clinicians to screen, assess, diagnose, and treat dementias. One way to address this limitation is by using mobile health (mHealth) platforms to scale-up neurocognitive testing. In this paper, we describe one such platform, a brief tablet-based cognitive assessment tool (NeuroScreen) that can be administered by lay health-providers. It may help identify patients with cognitive impairment (related, for instance, to dementia) and thereby improve clinical care and outcomes. However, there is a lack of data regarding (a) the acceptability of this novel technology for delivery of neurocognitive assessments in LMIC-resident older adults, and (b) the influence of technology-use experience on NeuroScreen performance of LMIC-resident older adults. This study aimed to fill that knowledge gap, using a sample of cognitively impaired South African older adults.
Participants and Methods:
Participants were 60 older adults (63.33% female; 91.67% right-handed; age M = 68.90 years, SD = 9.42, range = 50-83), all recruited from geriatric and memory clinics in Cape Town, South Africa. In a single 1-hour session, they completed the entire NeuroScreen battery (Trail Making, Number Speed, Finger Tapping, Visual Discrimination, Number Span Forward, Number Span Backward, List Learning, List Recall) as well as a study-specific questionnaire assessing acceptability of NeuroScreen use and overall experience and comfort with computer-based technology. We summed across 11 questionnaire items to derive a single variable capturing technology-use experience, with higher scores indicating more experience.
Results:
Almost all participants (93.33%) indicated that NeuroScreen was easy to use. A similar number (90.00%) indicated they would be comfortable completing NeuroScreen at routine doctor's visits. Only 6.67% reported feeling uncomfortable using a tablet, despite about three-quarters (76.67%) reporting never having used a tablet with a touchscreen before. Almost one in five participants (18.33%) reported owning a computer, 10.00% a tablet, and 70.00% a smartphone. Correlations between test performance and technology-use experience were statistically significant (or strongly tended toward significance) for most NeuroScreen subtests that assessed higherorder cognitive functioning and that required the participant to manipulate the tablet themselves: Trail Making 2 (a measure of cognitive switching ability), r = .24, p = .05; Visual Discrimination A (complex processing speed [number-symbol matching]), r = .38, p = .002; Visual Discrimination B (pattern recognition), r = .37, p = .004; Number Speed (simple information processing speed), r = .36, p = .004. For the most part, there were no such significant associations when the NeuroScreen subtest required only verbal input from the participant (i.e., on the list learning and number span tasks).
Conclusions:
NeuroScreen, a tablet-based neurocognitive screening tool, appears feasible for use among older South Africans, even if they are cognitively impaired and have limited technological familiarity. However, test performance might be influenced by amount of technology-use experience; clinicians using the battery must consider this in their interpretations.
Neuropsychological (NP) tests are increasingly computerized, which automates testing, scoring, and administration. These innovations are well-suited for use in resource-limited settings, such as low- to middle- income countries (LMICs), which often lack specialized testing resources (e.g., trained staff, forms, norms, equipment). Despite this, there is a dearth of research on their acceptability and usability which could affect performance, particularly in LMICs with varying levels of access to computer technology. NeuroScreen is a tablet-based battery of tests assessing learning, memory, working memory, processing speed, executive functions, and motor speed. This study evaluated the acceptability and usability of NeuroScreen among two groups of LMIC adolescents with and without HIV from Cape Town, South Africa and Kampala, Uganda.
Participants and Methods:
Adolescents in Cape Town (n=131) and Kampala (n=80) completed NeuroScreen and questions about their use and ownership of, as well as comfort with computer technology and their experiences completing NeuroScreen. Participants rated their technology use -comfort with and ease-of-use of computers, tablets, smartphones, and NeuroScreen on a Likert-type scale: (1) Very Easy/Very Comfortable to (6) Very Difficult/Very Uncomfortable. For analyses, responses of Somewhat Easy/Comfortable to Very Easy/Comfortable were collapsed to codify comfort and ease. Descriptive statistics assessed technology use and experiences of using the NeuroScreen tool. A qualitative question asked how participants would feel receiving NeuroScreen routinely in the future; responses were coded as positive, negative, or neutral (e.g., “I would enjoy it”). Chi-squares assessed for group differences.
Results:
South African adolescents were 15.42 years on average, 50.3% male, and 49% were HIV-positive. Ugandan adolescents were 15.64 years on average, 50.6% male, and 54% HIVpositive. South African participants were more likely than Ugandan participants to have ever used a computer (71% vs. 49%; p<.005), or tablet (58% vs. 40%; p<.05), whereas smartphone use was similar (94% vs 87%). South African participants reported higher rates of comfort using a computer (86% vs. 46%; p<.001) and smartphone (96% vs. 88%; p<.05) compared to Ugandan participants. Ugandan adolescents rated using NeuroScreen as easier than South African adolescents (96% vs. 87%; p<.05).). Regarding within-sample differences by HIV status, Ugandan participants with HIV were less likely to have used a computer than participants without HIV (70% vs. 57%; p<.05, respectively).The Finger Tapping test was rated as the easiest by both South African (73%) and Ugandan (64%) participants. Trail Making was rated as the most difficult test among Ugandan participants (37%); 75% of South African participants reported no tasks as difficult followed by Finger Tapping as most difficult (8%). When asked about completing NeuroScreen at routine doctor’s visits, most South Africans (85%) and Ugandans (72%) responded positively.
Conclusions:
This study found that even with low prior tablet use and varying levels of comfort in using technology, South African and Ugandan adolescents rated NeuroScreen with high acceptability and usability. These data suggest that scaling up NeuroScreen in LMICs, where technology use might be limited, may be appropriate for adolescent populations. Further research should examine prior experience and comfort with tablets as predictors NeuroScreen test performance.
Working Alliance is defined as the emotional bond and the agreement on therapeutic goals and tasks between patients and therapists. Despite the wide use of the construct of working alliance in research on psychotherapy, few studies have investigated the role of working alliance in influencing adherence to pharmacotherapy, and drug attitude. A deeper knowledge of the interplay between working alliance and drug attitude could help to challenge low adherence to psychopharmacological treatments in Major Depressive Disorder.
Objectives
This study aimed to investigate the relationship between working alliance and drug attitude in patients with Major Depressive Disorder.
Methods
27 patients admitted in the Psychiatric Unit of Careggi with diagnosis of Major Depressive Disorders were enrolled. Working Alliance Inventory - patient version (WAI-P), Drug Attitude Inventory (DAI) and Beliefs about Medicines (BMQ) were administered. Pearson’s correlation was used to assess relationships between variables.
Results
A significant positive correlation was detected between BMQ total scores, DAI total scores and WAI-P task, bond, and goal subscales.

Conclusions
Such preliminary data suggest a relationship between Working Alliance and drug attitude. This could contribute to provide tools to challenge low adherence to psychopharmacological treatments in patients with Major Depressive Disorder.
OBJECTIVES/GOALS: A qualitative study was performed to characterize experiences of Black and White women going through menopause, as well as identify barriers and facilitators for participating in a lifestyle program targeting weight management during menopause. This abstract includes data from Black women. Results from White women will be available by ACTS 2022. METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: Perimenopausal and postmenopausal Black women with a self-reported desire to lose or maintain weight during menopause participated in a total of six focus groups. Women were asked about their past experiences with diet, exercise, and weight management; their menopause experiences; as well as specific components and considerations for developing a lifestyle program for weight management. Thematic analysis was conducted on coded transcripts and four main themes emerged, each containing three to seven subthemes. RESULTS/ANTICIPATED RESULTS: Twenty-seven Black women (age 54±4 years, BMI 35.1±9.0 kg/m2) were enrolled. Overall, women felt unprepared for the changes they experienced during menopause and had difficulty maintaining or losing weight. While women were receptive to trying different diets and exercises, they wanted a diet that was flexible with their lifestyle and exercises that considered their existing health status. Women were also interested in learning about menopause alongside other women, stating that medical professionals did not provide them with adequate information or help. Social support, accountability, and seeing results were perceived critical to achieve long-lasting behavioral change. DISCUSSION/SIGNIFICANCE: Women were interested in receiving menopause information and improving their overall health as part of a lifestyle program during menopause. Associating with other women affected by menopause will allow for the creation of more sustainable lifestyle programs during menopause.
The prevalence of vector-associated parasitic infections is high in central-southern Italy. The deltaic coastal plain of the Volturno River has been suspected, by veterinary practitioners, to have a high accidental incidence of Dirofilaria repens. Thus, the goal of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of dirofilariasis and other coinfections frequently described in dogs living in the Volturno area. Blood samples of 100 clinical asymptomatic dogs were examined using a Knott's technique and polymerase chain reaction in order to identify microfilariae. Other vector-borne coinfections were also investigated using ELISA kits. The results were analysed using statistical and Geographic Information System (GIS) software. Microfilariae of D. repens were detected in 10% of the dogs surveyed, with a presence of antibodies against Ehrlichia canis (4/10) and Dirofilaria immitis (1/10). Such high incidence should be considered in light of the zoonotic potential for D. repens and the support for more regular use of repellents to prevent the spread of this disease. The GIS analyses indicated that the study area provides suitable conditions to sustain populations of mosquito vectors and D. repens parasites throughout much of the year.
Funerary art has the body as its main material component, expresses responses to death and offers insight into relationships between the living and the dead. Chinchorro hunter-gatherer-fisher societies along the Atacama Desert coast provide a key example of such connections, having developed one of the world's oldest-known systems of post-mortem body transformation (c. 7000–3250 BP). A study of 162 modified Chinchorro bodies identifies diachronic changes in these practices, including a decrease in internal stuffing—adding invisible contents that created corporeal volume—and an increase in external body treatment that created visible features. The authors propose that such manipulation was a meaningful form of social embodiment designed to construct a collective identity.
Research indicates that congresswomen are more effective at moving bills through the lawmaking process than their male counterparts. To investigate why, we discuss what legislative entrepreneurship involves and explain why it can serve as the basis for problem-solving and effective lawmaking in the U.S. Congress. We also examine the entrepreneurial work that members of Congress did on behalf of bills that they sponsored from 1973 to 2008. Among other findings, we observe that congresswomen, especially those in the minority party, are more entrepreneurial than their male colleagues. This finding enhances our understanding of why female lawmakers are more effective lawmakers.
As insignia of power and prestige, Inka unku (tapestry tunics) communicated the strength and extent of Inka sociopolitical hegemony in the Andes. Of the 36 known full-size examples in museum collections, only one, found in Argentina, comes from outside Peru. This article investigates another recently excavated unku found out of context on Chile's northernmost coast. To confirm its authenticity, we compiled a database showing the technical and stylistic attributes of previous finds for comparison. We conclude that this artifact is indeed a new type of unku and that the discovery affects our understanding of the complex relationship between the people of this province and the Inka state.
A distinct feature of many of the earliest archaeological sites (13,000-11,200 cal yr BP) at the core of the Atacama Desert is that they lie at or just below the surface, often encased in desert pavements. In this study, we compare these sites and undisturbed desert pavements to understand archaeological site formation and pavement development and recovery. Our results indicate these pavements and their soils are poorly developed regardless of their age. We propose that this is because of sustained lack of rain and extreme physical breakdown of clasts by salt expansion. Thus, the core of the Atacama provides an example of the lower limits of rainfall (<50 mm/yr) needed to form desert pavements. At site Quebrada Maní 12 (QM12), humans destroyed the pavement. After abandonment, human-made depressions were filled with eolian sands, incorporating artifacts in shallow deposits. Small and medium-sized artifacts preferentially migrated upwards, perhaps due to earthquakes and the action of salts. These artifacts, which now form palimpsests at the surface, helped – along with older clasts - to restore surface clast cover. Larger archaeological features remained undisturbed on top of a deeper Byzm horizon. The vesicular A horizons (Av horizons) have not regenerated on the archaeological sites due to extreme scarcity of rainfall during the Holocene.
A key concern regarding current and future climate change is the possibility of sustained droughts that can have profound impacts on societies. As such, multiple paleoclimatic proxies are needed to identify megadroughts, the synoptic climatology responsible for these droughts, and their impacts on past and future societies. In the hyperarid Atacama Desert of northern Chile, many streams are characterized by perennial flow and support dense in-stream wetlands. These streams possess sequences of wetland deposits as fluvial terraces that record past changes in the water table. We mapped and radiocarbon dated a well-preserved sequence of in-stream wetland deposits along a 4.3-km reach of the Río San Salvador in the Calama basin to determine the relationship between regional climate change and the incision of in-stream wetlands. The Río San Salvador supported dense wetlands from 11.1 to 9.8, 6.4 to 3.5, 2.8 to 1.3, and 1.0 to 0.5 ka and incised at the end of each of these intervals. Comparison with other in-stream wetland sequences in the Atacama Desert, and with regional paleoclimatic archives, indicates that in-stream wetlands responded similarly to climatic changes by incising during periods of extended drought at ~9.8, 3.5, 1.3, and 0.5 ka.
The Kabwe Zn-Pb deposit (central Zambia) consists of a cluster of mixed sulfide and non-sulfide orebodies. The sulfide ores comprise sphalerite, galena, pyrite, chalcopyrite and accessory Ge-sulfides (±Ga and In). The non-sulfide ores comprise: (1) willemite-dominated zones encasing massive sulfide orebodies and (2) oxide-dominated alteration bands, overlying both the sulfide and Zn-silicate orebodies. This study focuses on the Ge, In and Ga distribution in the non-sulfide mineralization, and was carried out on a suite of Kabwe specimens, housed in the Natural History Museum Ore Collection (London). Petrography confirmed that the original sulfides were overprinted by at least two contrasting oxidation stages dominated by the formation of willemite (W1 and W2), and a further event characterized by weathering-related processes. Oxygen isotopic analyses have shown that W1 and W2 are unrelated genetically and furthermore not related to supergene Zn-Pb-carbonates in the oxide-dominated assemblage. The δ18O composition of 13.9–15.7‰ V-SMOW strongly supports a hydrothermal origin for W1. The δ18O composition of W2 (−3.5‰ to 0‰ V-SMOW) indicates that it precipitated from groundwaters of meteoric origin in either a supergene or a low-T hydrothermal environment. Gallium and Ge show a diversity of distribution among the range of Zn-bearing minerals. Gallium has been detected at the ppm level in W1, sphalerite, goethite and hematite. Germanium occurs at ppm levels in W1 and W2, and in scarcely detectable amounts in hemimorphite, goethite and hematite. Indium has low concentrations in goethite and hematite. These different deportments among the various phases are probably due to the different initial Ga, In and Ge abundances in the mineralization, to the different solubilities of the three elements at different temperatures and pH values, and finally to their variable affinities with the various minerals formed.
Head and neck space infections present with a potential mortality rate of 40–50 per cent. This paper proposes an algorithm-based management of head and neck space infection to prevent life-threatening events.
Methods:
A total of 225 patients with head and neck space infection were prospectively analysed at our institution. An experimental scoring system determined the level of clinical risk for the development of major complications. Accordingly, patients were classified into three risk groups: low-, intermediate- and high-risk.
Results:
Only intermediate- and high-risk patients were hospitalised. Intermediate-risk patients received intravenous medical therapy with daily re-evaluation; 18 of them required delayed surgery. Of the high-risk patients, three required immediate surgical treatment and five received delayed surgery, while in five cases medical therapy was the only treatment received. Low-risk patients were treated in an out-patient setting.
Conclusion:
The algorithm-based management of head and neck space infection was successful in enabling the avoidance of lethal complications onset.
Hunter-gatherers collected and used various woody species depending on the landscape, availability of plant communities, and sociocultural considerations. With extensive paleo-wetlands and groundwater-fed oases, the Atacama Desert was interspersed with riparian woodlands that provided vital resources (fuel, water, and game) at the end of the Pleistocene in areas such as the Pampa del Tamarugal (PdT) basin. We use anthracological analyses to determine the fuel management strategies of hunter-gatherer societies in this hyperarid environment and explore whether the “Principle of Least Effort” applies. First, we present the combustion qualities and characteristics of woody taxa from the Atacama and analyze possible exploitation strategies. Second, we use anthracological analyses from Quebrada Maní 12 (QM12), a late Pleistocene archaeological site (dated from 12,750 to 11,530 cal B.P.) located in the PdT basin, to show the prevalence of two woody species that were either freshly collected or gathered (very likely on purpose) from subfossil wood. Our results suggest that fuel selection strategies were based on prior knowledge of the qualities of these woody taxa and how they burned. Thus we conclude that fuel management was part of a number of social and economic decisions that allowed for effective colonization of this region. Furthermore, we stress the need for caution when using charcoal to exclusively date archaeological sites located in desert environments.
We report data on 3 members of a family affected by a dominantly inherited disorder closely resembling Roussy-Levy syndrome (RLS). Electrophysiological findings showed a marked decrease of motor and sensory conduction velocities and EMG signs of mild neurogenic damage. Light and electron microscopy of sural nerve biopsy showed a hypertrophic neuropathy with diffuse onion-bulb formations and marked decrease of large size fibers. Teased fiber preparations evidenced reduced internodal lengths and segmental demyelination. Other data from the literature on RLS are reviewed and discussed. The hypothesis that RLS is not a disease entity but a hypertrophic-type of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease with essential tremor (HMSN type 1) is strongly supported.
The air sacs of free-ranging birds of prey (n= 652) from southern Italy, including 11 species of Accipitriformes and six of Falconiforms, were examined for infections with Serratospiculumtendo (Nematoda: Diplotriaenoidea). Of the 17 species of birds examined, 25 of 31 (80.6%) peregrine falcons (Falco peregrinus) from Calabria Region and a single northern goshawk (Accipiter gentilis) from Campania Region were infected with S. tendo, suggesting a strong host specificity for the peregrine falcon. The northern goshawk and 18 of 25 infected peregrine falcons showed cachexia and all infected birds had bone fractures. At gross examination, air sacculitis and pneumonia were the most common lesions in infected birds. Microscopically, the air-sac walls showed thickening of the smooth muscle cells, resulting in a papillary appearance, along with hyperplasia of the mesothelium and epithelium, and foci of plasma cell infiltration and macrophages associated with several embryonated eggs and adult parasites. Extensive areas of inflammation were found in the lungs, characterized by lymphocytes, macrophages and fibroblasts surrounding embryonated eggs. The northern goshawk also had detachment of the dextral lung with several necrotic foci. In this case, the death of the bird was directly attributed to S. tendo infection. Lesions and pathological changes observed here suggest that S. tendo can cause disease.
Exercise has been shown to increase mRNA expression of a growing number of genes. The aim of this study was to assess if mRNA expression of the metabolism- and oxidative stress-related genes GLUT4 (glucose transporter 4), COX2 (cyclooxygenase 2), SOD1 (superoxide dismutase 1) and HSP70 (heat shock protein 70) in saliva changes following acute exercise stress in dogs. For this purpose, 12 avalanche dogs of the Italian Military Force Guardia di Finanza were monitored during simulation of a search for a buried person in an artificial avalanche area. Rectal temperature (RT) and saliva samples were collected the day before the trial (T0), immediately after the descent from a helicopter at the onset of a simulated avalanche search and rescue operation (T1), after the discovery of the buried person (T2) and 2 h later (T3). Expressions of GLUT4, SOD1, COX2 and HSP70 were measured by real-time PCR. The simulated avalanche search and rescue operation was shown to exert a significant effect on RT, as well as on the expression of all metabolism- and oxidative stress-related genes investigated, which peaked at T2. The observed expression patterns indicate an acute exercise stress-induced upregulation, as confirmed by the reductions in expression at T3. Moreover, our findings indicate that saliva is useful for assessing metabolism- and oxidative stress-related genes without the need for restraint, which could affect working dog performance.
