Adolescence is a pivotal stage for brain development and a critical window for the emergence and transition of self-injury thoughts and behaviours (SITBs). However, the genetic and neurobiological mechanisms underlying SITBs transition during this developmental period are poorly understood.
Aims
This study investigates associations among genetic predispositions, brain abnormalities and SITBs transition during adolescence, and identifies potential neurobiological and clinical mediators of genetic effects.
Method
This national retrospective cohort study analysed 5-year longitudinal data from the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive DevelopmentSM Study® (N = 11 868 children aged 9–10 years at baseline). Logistic regression models identified genetic susceptibility and neurobiological abnormalities associated with SITBs transition over a 4-year period. Generalised additive models characterised genetic risk trajectories and critical developmental periods. Mediation analyses examined neurobiological and clinical pathways linking genetic susceptibility to SITBs.
Results
Our findings highlight a notable correlation between SITBs transition and genetic susceptibility, including polygenic risk scores for suicide attempt, ever contemplated self-harm and ever self-harm. The analysis indicates that ages 10–15 years may be a critical period during which genetic risk exerts its most pronounced influence. Structural and functional brain imaging detected some alterations, particularly in grey matter volume (GMV) of the left ventral posterior cingulate cortex, alongside disrupted resting-state functional connectivity in the dorsal attention and default mode networks. Mediation analysis suggests that the association between genetic susceptibility and SITBs transition over 4 years may be partially mediated by GMV changes in the left inferior frontal sulcus, altered resting-state connectivity between the auditory and sensorimotor hand networks and the p-factor.
Conclusions
These results may offer insights into integrating genetic, neurobiological and clinical data to enhance the accuracy of suicide risk stratification in adolescents, and inform the development of more nuanced and targeted early intervention strategies.
We aimed to validate in-body bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) measures with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) as reference and describe the body composition (BC) profiling of Tibetan adults.
Design:
This cross-sectional study included 855 participants (391 men and 464 women). Correlation and Bland–Altman analyses were performed for method agreement of in-body BIA and DXA. BC were described by obesity and metabolic status.
Setting:
In-body BIA and DXA have not been employed to characterise the BC of the Tibetan population living in the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau.
Participants:
A total of 855 Tibetan adults, including 391 men and 464 women, were enrolled in the study.
Results:
Concordance correlation coefficient for total fat mass (FM) and total lean mass (LM) between in-body BIA and DXA were 0·91 and 0·89. The bias of in-body BIA for percentages of total FM and total LM was 0·91 % (2·46 %) and –1·74 % (–2·80 %) compared with DXA, respectively. Absolute limits of agreement were wider for total FM in obese men and women and for total LM in overweight men than their counterparts. Gradience in the distribution of total and regional FM content was observed across different BMI categories and its combinations with waist circumference and metabolic status.
Conclusions:
In-body BIA and DXA provided overall good agreement at the group level in Tibetan adults, but the agreement was inferior in participants being overweight or obese.
Market-driven neoliberal ideology advocates for the adoption of English as the common business language by multinational companies; however, this often clashes with multilingual realities. This study explores how neoliberal ideologies have made English a catalyst for language-related conflicts within language management across various stages at a Shanghai-based subsidiary of a German multinational corporation. Data for this research was gathered via a seven-month ethnographic study and includes analysis of publicly accessible documents from the company's website, meeting transcripts, ethnographic notes, and semi-structured interviews with five local employees. Qualitative data analysis identified conflicts in the company's recruitment process, daily business communication, and language support services. Conflicting language management created communicative barriers and limited local employees’ engagement in the company's business affairs. Through a neoliberal lens, the findings highlight that when neoliberal English dominance encounters multilingual realities, the latter may undermine the efficiency and profitability central to neoliberal objectives. It is concluded that a reinterpreting of the neoliberal agenda is important for both policy makers and local employees to reconfigure neoliberal subjectivity, alongside measures to empower local employees’ linguistic and epistemic resources to facilitate their full participation in corporate affairs.
Substantial changes resulting from the interaction of environmental and dietary factors contribute to an increased risk of obesity, while their specific associations with obesity remain unclear. We identified inflammation-related dietary patterns (DP) and explored their associations with obesity among urbanised Tibetan adults under significant environmental and dietary changes. Totally, 1826 subjects from the suburbs of Golmud City were enrolled in an open cohort study, of which 514 were followed up. Height, weight and waist circumference were used to define overweight and obesity. DP were derived using reduced rank regression with forty-one food groups as predictors and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein and prognostic nutritional index as inflammatory response variables. Altitude was classified as high or ultra-high. Two DP were extracted. DP-1 was characterised by having high consumptions of sugar-sweetened beverages, savoury snacks, and poultry and a low intake of tsamba. DP-2 had high intakes of poultry, pork, animal offal, and fruits and a low intake of butter tea. Participants in the highest tertiles (T3) of DP had increased risks of overweight and obesity (DP-1: OR = 1·37, 95 % CI 1·07, 1·77; DP-2: OR = 1·48, 95 % CI 1·18, 1·85) than those in the lowest tertiles (T1). Participants in T3 of DP-2 had an increased risk of central obesity (OR = 2·25, 95 % CI 1·49, 3·39) than those in T1. The positive association of DP-1 with overweight and obesity was only significant at high altitudes, while no similar effect was observed for DP-2. Inflammation-related DP were associated with increased risks of overweight and/or obesity.
As avionics systems become increasingly complex, traditional fault prediction methods are no longer sufficient to meet modern demands. This paper introduces four advanced fault prediction methods for avionics components, utilising a multi-step prediction strategy combined with a stacking regressor. By selecting various standard regression models as base regressors, these base regressors are first trained on the original data, and their predictions are subsequently used as input features for training a meta-regressor. Additionally, the Tree-structured Parzen Estimator (TPE) algorithm is employed for hyperparameter optimisation. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed stacking regression methods exhibit superior accuracy in fault prediction compared to traditional single-model approaches.
In contemporary neuroimaging studies, it has been observed that patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) exhibit aberrant spontaneous neural activity, commonly quantified through the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF). However, the substantial individual heterogeneity among patients poses a challenge to reaching a unified conclusion.
Methods
To address this variability, our study adopts a novel framework to parse individualized ALFF abnormalities. We hypothesize that individualized ALFF abnormalities can be portrayed as a unique linear combination of shared differential factors. Our study involved two large multi-center datasets, comprising 2424 patients with MDD and 2183 healthy controls. In patients, individualized ALFF abnormalities were derived through normative modeling and further deconstructed into differential factors using non-negative matrix factorization.
Results
Two positive and two negative factors were identified. These factors were closely linked to clinical characteristics and explained group-level ALFF abnormalities in the two datasets. Moreover, these factors exhibited distinct associations with the distribution of neurotransmitter receptors/transporters, transcriptional profiles of inflammation-related genes, and connectome-informed epicenters, underscoring their neurobiological relevance. Additionally, factor compositions facilitated the identification of four distinct depressive subtypes, each characterized by unique abnormal ALFF patterns and clinical features. Importantly, these findings were successfully replicated in another dataset with different acquisition equipment, protocols, preprocessing strategies, and medication statuses, validating their robustness and generalizability.
Conclusions
This research identifies shared differential factors underlying individual spontaneous neural activity abnormalities in MDD and contributes novel insights into the heterogeneity of spontaneous neural activity abnormalities in MDD.
Studies on obesity and risk factors from a life-course perspective among residents in the Tibet Plateau with recent economic growth and increasing obesity are important and urgently needed. The birth cohort in this area provides a unique opportunity to examine the association between maternal dietary practice and neonatal obesity. The study aims to detect the prevalence of obesity among neonates, associated with maternal diet and other factors, supporting life-course strategies for obesity control. A cohort of pregnant women was enrolled in Tibet Plateau and followed till childbirth. Dietary practice during pregnancy was assessed using the Chinese FFQ – Tibet Plateau version, food items and other variables were associated with the risk for obesity of neonates followed by logistic regression, classification and regression trees (CART) and random forest. Of the total 1226 mother–neonate pairs, 40·5 % were Tibetan and 5·4 % of neonates with obesity. Consuming fruits as a protective factor for obesity of neonates with OR (95 % CI) = 0·61 (0·43, 0·87) from logistic regression; as well as OR = 0·20 (0·12, 0·35) for consuming fruits (≥ weekly) from CART. Removing fruit consumption to avoid overshadowing effects of other factors, the following were influential from CART: maternal education (more than middle school, OR = 0·22 (0·13, 0·37)) and consumption of Tibetan food (daily, OR = 3·44 (2·08, 5·69). Obesity among neonates is prevalent in the study population. Promoting healthy diets during pregnancy and strengthening maternal education should be part of the life-course strategies for obesity control.
We present evidence revealing that an object with specific properties can exhibit multiple stable falling postures at low Reynolds numbers. By scrutinizing the force equilibrium relationship of a fixed object at various attack angles and Reynolds numbers, we introduce a methodology that can obtain the stable falling postures of the object. This method saves computational resources and more intuitively presents the results in the full parameter domain. Our findings are substantiated by free-fall tests conducted through both physical experiments and numerical simulations, which validate the existence of multiple stable solutions in accordance with the interpolation results obtained with fixed objects. Additionally, we quantify the abundance and distribution patterns of stable falling postures for a diverse range of representative shapes. This discovery highlights the existence of multiple stable solutions that are universally present across objects of different shapes. The implications of this research extend to the design, stability control and trajectory prediction of all free and controlled flights in both air and water.
Wall-climbing robots work on large steel components with magnets, which limits the use of wireless sensors and magnetometers. This study aims to propose a novel autonomous localisation method (RGBD-IMU-AL) with an inertial measurement unit and a fixed RGB-D camera to improve the localisation performance of wall-climbing robots. The method contains five modules: calibration, tracking, three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction, location and attitude estimation. The calibration module is used to obtain the initial attitude angle. The tracking and 3D reconstruction module are used jointly to obtain the rough position and normal vector of the robot chassis. For the location module, a normal vector projection method is established to screen out the top point on the robot shell. An extended Kalman filter (EKF) is used to estimate the heading angle in the attitude estimation module. Experimental results show that the positioning error is within 0⋅02 m, and the positioning performance is better than that of the MS3D method. The heading angle error remains within 3⋅1°. The obtained results prove its applicability for the autonomous localisation in low-texture and magnetically disturbed environments.
The assessment of seed quality and physiological potential is essential in seed production and crop breeding. In the process of rapid detection of seed viability using tetrazolium (TZ) staining, it is necessary to spend a lot of labour and material resources to explore the pretreatment and staining methods of hard and solid seeds with physical barriers. This study explores the TZ staining methods of six hard seeds (Tilia miqueliana, Tilia henryana, Sassafras tzumu, Prunus subhirtella, Prunus sibirica, and Juglans mandshurica) and summarizes the TZ staining conditions required for hard seeds by combining the difference in fat content between seeds and the kinship between species, thus providing a rapid viability test method for the protection of germplasm resources of endangered plants and the optimization of seed bank construction. The TZ staining of six species of hard seeds requires a staining temperature above 35 °C and a TZ solution concentration higher than 1%. Endospermic seeds require shorter staining times than exalbuminous seeds. The higher the fat content of the seeds, the lower the required incubation temperature and TZ concentration for staining, and the longer the staining time. And the closer the relationship between the two species, the more similar their staining conditions become. The TZ staining method of similar species can be predicted according to the genetic distance between the phylogenetic trees, and the viability of new species can be detected quickly.
Retropharyngeal lymphadenectomy is challenging. This study investigated a minimally invasive approach to salvage retropharyngeal lymphadenectomy in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma.
Methods
An anatomical study of four fresh cadaveric heads was conducted to demonstrate the relevant details of retropharyngeal lymphadenectomy using the endoscopic transoral medial pterygomandibular fold approach. Six patients with nasopharyngeal cancer with retropharyngeal lymph node recurrence, who underwent retropharyngeal lymphadenectomy with the endoscopic transoral medial pterygomandibular fold technique at the Eye and ENT Hospital of Fudan University from July to December 2021, were included in this study.
Results
The anatomical study demonstrated that the endoscopic transoral medial pterygomandibular fold approach offers a short path and minimally invasive approach to the retropharyngeal space. The surgical procedure was well tolerated by all patients, with no significant post-operative complications.
Conclusion
The endoscopic transoral medial pterygomandibular fold approach is safe and efficient for retropharyngeal lymphadenectomy.
Anxiety disorder among college students is currently the main psychological problem, which seriously affects physical and mental health and even leads to the occurrence of adverse events. The anxiety of college students is in the transitional period from adolescence to adulthood, and the main factors that cause anxiety mainly come from three pressures family, school, and society. This study aims to explore intervention and treatment plans for anxiety disorders in college students.
Subjects and Methods
Firstly, 1745 freshmen were selected from a certain university and are familiar with the basic situation of the survey. Secondly, a regression model for anxiety risk was established using multivariate logistic regression analysis. The model was divided into male and female groups and regression analysis was conducted on the growth environment, an only child, parental marital status, and childhood abuse. Finally, SPSS23.0 was used for data analysis and t-test.
Results
The logistic regression analysis of anxiety-related factors showed that the analysis results of growth environment, only child status, and parental marital status were all P>0.05, with no statistical significance. The analysis result of the positive answer in childhood abuse experiences is P<0.001, which is statistically significant. Indicating that childhood abuse is an important factor for anxiety risk.
Conclusions
Early attention and assistance are needed for the discovery, prevention, and treatment of anxiety disorders in college students. On the one hand, parents need to pay attention and avoid childhood abuse, and on the other hand, college education also provides understanding and early intervention in students’ basic situation.
Since 2016, China has been conducting military flybys around Taiwan, while the US has approved arms sales to Taiwan on several occasions and sent warplanes and battleships through the Taiwan Strait. How does Taiwanese public opinion respond to the Chinese and US military presence in the Strait? Is the public likely to become less supportive of de jure independence for Taiwan on account of China's military deterrence or more supportive owing to a perceived likelihood of US military assistance? In this report, we provide answers to these questions based on evidence from a survey experiment conducted in Taiwan in October–November 2020. We find that Taiwanese are less sensitive to the Chinese military presence in the Taiwan Strait but have become more supportive of de jure independence after seeing the US aircraft in the area. Our findings contribute to studies of cross-Strait relations and US foreign policy on the Taiwan Strait.
Trematodes of the genus Ogmocotyle are intestinal flukes that can infect a variety of definitive hosts, resulting in significant economic losses worldwide. However, there are few studies on molecular data of these trematodes. In this study, the mitochondrial (mt) genome of Ogmocotyle ailuri isolated from red panda (Ailurus fulgens) was determined and compared with those from Pronocephalata to investigate the mt genome content, genetic distance, gene rearrangements and phylogeny. The complete mt genome of O. ailuri is a typical closed circular molecule of 14 642 base pairs, comprising 12 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA genes, 2 ribosomal RNA genes and 2 non-coding regions. All genes are transcribed in the same direction. In addition, 23 intergenic spacers and 2 locations with gene overlaps were determined. Sequence identities and sliding window analysis indicated that cox1 is the most conserved gene among 12 PCGs in O. ailuri mt genome. The sequenced mt genomes of the 48 Plagiorchiida trematodes showed 5 types of gene arrangement based on all mt genome genes, with the gene arrangement of O. ailuri being type I. Phylogenetic analysis using concatenated amino acid sequences of 12 PCGs revealed that O. ailuri was closer to Ogmocotyle sikae than to Notocotylus intestinalis. These data enhance the Ogmocotyle mt genome database and provide molecular resources for further studies of Pronocephalata taxonomy, population genetics and systematics.
In this paper, we study the asymptotic profiles of positive solutions for diffusive logistic equations. The aim is to study the sharp effect of linear growth and nonlinear function. Both the classical reaction-diffusion equation and nonlocal dispersal equation are investigated. Our main results reveal that the linear and nonlinear parts of reaction term play quite different roles in the study of positive solutions.
We report VLBI monitoring observations of the 22 GHz H2O masers toward the Mira variable BX Cam. Data from 37 epochs spanning ∼3 stellar pulsation periods were obtained between May 2018 and June 2021 with a time interval of 3–4 weeks. In particular, the VERA dual-beam system was used to measure the kinematics and parallaxes of the H2O maser features. The obtained parallax, 1.79±0.08 mas, is consistent with Gaia EDR3 and previous VLBI measurements. The position of the central star was estimated relied on Gaia EDR3 data and the center position of the 43 GHz SiO maser ring imaged with KVN. Analysis of the 3D maser kinematics revealed an expanding circumstellar envelope with a velocity of 13±4 km s−1 and significant spatial and velocity asymmetries. The H2O maser animation achieved by our dense monitoring program manifests the propagation of shock waves in the circumstellar envelope of BX Cam.
In this paper, we show that each element in the convex hull of the rotation set of a compact invariant chain transitive set is realized by a Birkhoff solution, which is an improvement of the fundamental lemma of T. Zhou and W.-X. Qin [Pseudo solutions, rotation sets, and shadowing rotations for monotone recurrence relations. Math. Z.297 (2021), 1673–1692] in the study of rotation sets for monotone recurrence relations. We then investigate the properties of rotation sets assuming the system has zero topological entropy. The rotation set for a Birkhoff recurrence class is a singleton and the forward and backward rotation numbers are identical for each solution in the same Birkhoff recurrence class. We also show the continuity of rotation numbers on the set of non-wandering points. If the rotation set is upper-stable, then we show that each boundary point is a rational number, and we also obtain a result of bounded deviation.
For individual cultures, findings on regulating embryo density by changing the microdrop volume are contradictory. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between embryo density and the developmental outcome of day 3 embryos after adjusting covariates. In total, 1196 embryos from 206 couples who had undergone in vitro fertilization treatment were analyzed retrospectively. Three embryo densities were used routinely, i.e. one embryo in a drop (30 μl/embryo), two embryos in a drop (15 μl/embryo) and three embryos in a drop (10 μl/embryo). Embryo quality on day 3 was evaluated, both the cell number of day 3 embryos and the proportion of successful implantations served as endpoints. Maternal age, paternal age, antral follicles and level of anti-Müllerian hormone, type of infertility, controlled ovarian stimulation protocol, length of stimulation, number of retrieved oocytes, number of zygotes (two pronuclei) and insemination type were covariates and adjusted. After adjusting fully for all covariates, the cell number of day 3 embryos was significantly increased by 0.40 (95% CI 0.00, 0.79; P = 0.048) and 0.78 (95% CI 0.02, 1.54; P = 0.044) in the 15 μl/embryo and 10 μl/embryo group separately, compared with the 30 μl/embryo group. The proportions of implanted embryos were 42.1%, 48.7% and 0.0% in the 30 μl/embryo, 15 μl/embryo and 10 μl/embryo groups respectively. There was no statistical significance (P = 0.22) between the 30 μl/embryo group and the 15 μl/embryo group. After adjusting for confounders that were significant in univariate analysis, embryo density was still not associated with day 3 embryo implantation potential (P > 0.05). In a 30-μl microdrop, culturing embryos with an embryo density of both 15 and 10 μl/embryo increased the cell number of day 3 embryos, which did not benefit embryo implanting potential, compared with individual culture of 30 μl/embryo.
