We prove the explicit version of the Buzzard–Diamond–Jarvis conjecture formulated by Dembele et al. (Serre weights and wild ramification in two-dimensional Galois representations, Preprint (2016), arXiv:1603.07708 [math.NT]). More precisely, we prove that it is equivalent to the original Buzzard–Diamond–Jarvis conjecture, which was proved for odd primes (under a mild Taylor–Wiles hypothesis) in earlier work of the third author and coauthors.

Using the descent spectral sequence for a Galois extension of ring spectra, we compute the Picard group of the higher real $K$ -theory spectra of Hopkins and Miller at height $n=p-1$ , for $p$ an odd prime. More generally, we determine the Picard groups of the homotopy fixed points spectra $E_{n}^{hG}$ , where $E_{n}$ is Lubin–Tate $E$ -theory at the prime $p$ and height $n=p-1$ , and $G$ is any finite subgroup of the extended Morava stabilizer group. We find that these Picard groups are always cyclic, generated by the suspension.

We prove some new structure results for automorphic products of singular weight. First, we give a simple characterisation of the Borcherds function $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F7}_{12}$ . Second, we show that holomorphic automorphic products of singular weight on lattices of prime level exist only in small signatures and we derive an explicit bound. Finally, we give a complete classification of reflective automorphic products of singular weight on lattices of prime level.

We study cluster categories arising from marked surfaces (with punctures and non-empty boundaries). By constructing skewed-gentle algebras, we show that there is a bijection between tagged curves and string objects. Applications include interpreting dimensions of $\operatorname{Ext}^{1}$ as intersection numbers of tagged curves and Auslander–Reiten translation as tagged rotation. An important consequence is that the cluster(-tilting) exchange graphs of such cluster categories are connected.

We consider mod  $p$ Hilbert modular forms associated to a totally real field of degree  $d$ in which $p$ is unramified. We prove that every such form arises by multiplication by partial Hasse invariants from one whose weight (a $d$ -tuple of integers) lies in a certain cone contained in the set of non-negative weights, answering a question of Andreatta and Goren. The proof is based on properties of the Goren–Oort stratification on mod  $p$ Hilbert modular varieties established by Goren and Oort, and Tian and Xiao.

We provide an explicit formula for localizing $\mathbb{A}^{1}$ -homotopy invariants of topological Fukaya categories of marked surfaces. Following a proposal of Kontsevich, this differential $\mathbb{Z}$ -graded category is defined as global sections of a constructible cosheaf of dg categories on any spine of the surface. Our theorem utilizes this sheaf-theoretic description to reduce the calculation of invariants to the local case when the surface is a boundary-marked disk. At the heart of the proof lies a theory of localization for topological Fukaya categories which is a combinatorial analog of Thomason–Trobaugh’s theory of localization in the context of algebraic $K$ -theory for schemes.

Extending our previous work on eigenvalues of closed surfaces and work of Otal and Rosas, we show that a complete Riemannian surface $S$ of finite type and Euler characteristic $\unicode[STIX]{x1D712}(S)<0$ has at most $-\unicode[STIX]{x1D712}(S)$ small eigenvalues.

Let $M$ be an irreducible holomorphic symplectic (hyperkähler) manifold. If $b_{2}(M)\geqslant 5$ , we construct a deformation $M^{\prime }$ of $M$ which admits a symplectic automorphism of infinite order. This automorphism is hyperbolic, that is, its action on the space of real $(1,1)$ -classes is hyperbolic. If $b_{2}(M)\geqslant 14$ , similarly, we construct a deformation which admits a parabolic automorphism (and many other automorphisms as well).

In this paper we prove the following theorem. Let $f$ be a dominant polynomial endomorphism of the affine plane defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$ . If there is no nonconstant invariant rational function under $f$ , then there exists a closed point in the plane whose orbit under $f$ is Zariski dense. This result gives us a positive answer to a conjecture proposed by Medvedev and Scanlon, by Amerik, Bogomolov and Rovinsky, and by Zhang for polynomial endomorphisms of the affine plane.

A result of André Weil allows one to describe rank $n$ vector bundles on a smooth complete algebraic curve up to isomorphism via a double quotient of the set $\text{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{A})$ of regular matrices over the ring of adèles (over algebraically closed fields, this result is also known to extend to $G$ -torsors for a reductive algebraic group  $G$ ). In the present paper we develop analogous adelic descriptions for vector and principal bundles on arbitrary Noetherian schemes, by proving an adelic descent theorem for perfect complexes. We show that for Beilinson’s co-simplicial ring of adèles $\mathbb{A}_{X}^{\bullet }$ , we have an equivalence $\mathsf{Perf}(X)\simeq |\mathsf{Perf}(\mathbb{A}_{X}^{\bullet })|$ between perfect complexes on $X$ and cartesian perfect complexes for $\mathbb{A}_{X}^{\bullet }$ . Using the Tannakian formalism for symmetric monoidal $\infty$ -categories, we conclude that a Noetherian scheme can be reconstructed from the co-simplicial ring of adèles. We view this statement as a scheme-theoretic analogue of Gelfand–Naimark’s reconstruction theorem for locally compact topological spaces from their ring of continuous functions. Several results for categories of perfect complexes over (a strong form of) flasque sheaves of algebras are established, which might be of independent interest.

This is the first of three papers in which we give a moduli interpretation of the second flip in the log minimal model program for $\overline{M}_{g}$ , replacing the locus of curves with a genus  $2$ Weierstrass tail by a locus of curves with a ramphoid cusp. In this paper, for $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}\in (2/3-\unicode[STIX]{x1D716},2/3+\unicode[STIX]{x1D716})$ , we introduce new $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}$ -stability conditions for curves and prove that they are deformation open. This yields algebraic stacks $\overline{{\mathcal{M}}}_{g}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC})$ related by open immersions $\overline{{\mathcal{M}}}_{g}(2/3+\unicode[STIX]{x1D716}){\hookrightarrow}\overline{{\mathcal{M}}}_{g}(2/3){\hookleftarrow}\overline{{\mathcal{M}}}_{g}(2/3-\unicode[STIX]{x1D716})$ . We prove that around a curve $C$ corresponding to a closed point in $\overline{{\mathcal{M}}}_{g}(2/3)$ , these open immersions are locally modeled by variation of geometric invariant theory for the action of $\text{Aut}(C)$ on the first-order deformation space of $C$ .

We prove a general criterion for an algebraic stack to admit a good moduli space. This result may be considered as a generalization of the Keel–Mori theorem, which guarantees the existence of a coarse moduli space for a separated Deligne–Mumford stack. We apply this result to prove that the moduli stacks $\overline{{\mathcal{M}}}_{g,n}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC})$ parameterizing $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}$ -stable curves introduced in [J. Alper et al., Second flip in the Hassett–Keel program: a local description, Compositio Math. 153 (2017), 1547–1583] admit good moduli spaces.

Boston, Bush and Hajir have developed heuristics, extending the Cohen–Lenstra heuristics, that conjecture the distribution of the Galois groups of the maximal unramified pro- $p$ extensions of imaginary quadratic number fields for $p$ an odd prime. In this paper, we find the moments of their proposed distribution, and further prove there is a unique distribution with those moments. Further, we show that in the function field analog, for imaginary quadratic extensions of $\mathbb{F}_{q}(t)$ , the Galois groups of the maximal unramified pro- $p$ extensions, as $q\rightarrow \infty$ , have the moments predicted by the Boston, Bush and Hajir heuristics. In fact, we determine the moments of the Galois groups of the maximal unramified pro-odd extensions of imaginary quadratic function fields, leading to a conjecture on Galois groups of the maximal unramified pro-odd extensions of imaginary quadratic number fields.

In this paper, motivated by a problem posed by Barry Mazur, we show that for smooth projective varieties over the rationals, the odd cohomology groups of degree less than or equal to the dimension can be modeled by the cohomology of an abelian variety, provided the geometric coniveau is maximal. This provides an affirmative answer to Mazur’s question for all uni-ruled threefolds, for instance. Concerning cohomology in degree three, we show that the image of the Abel–Jacobi map admits a distinguished model over the rationals.

We give a Rankin–Selberg integral representation for the Spin (degree eight) $L$ -function on $\operatorname{PGSp}_{6}$ that applies to the cuspidal automorphic representations associated to Siegel modular forms. If $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}$ corresponds to a level-one Siegel modular form $f$ of even weight, and if $f$ has a nonvanishing maximal Fourier coefficient (defined below), then we deduce the functional equation and finiteness of poles of the completed Spin $L$ -function $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6EC}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B},\text{Spin},s)$ of  $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}$ .
