The class CR of completely regular semigroups (unions of groups or algebras with the associative binary operation of multiplication and the unary operation of inversion subject to the laws x = xx-1, (x−1)-1 = x and xx-1 = x-1x) is a variety. Among the important subclasses of CR are the classes M of monoids and I of idempotent generated members. For each C ∈ {I, M}, there are associated mappings ν → ν ∩ C and ν → (Ν ∩ C), the variety generated by ν ∩ C. The lattice theoretic properties of these mappings and the interactions between these mappings are studied.

A completely regular semigroup is a semigroup which is a union of groups. The class CR of completely regular semigroups forms a variety. On the lattice L (CR) of completely regular semigroup varieties we define two closure operations which induce complete congruences. The consideration of a third complete congruence on L (CR) yields a subdirect decomposition of L (CR). Using these results we show that L (CR) is arguesian. This confirms the (tacit) conjecture that L (CR) is modular.

New oscillation criteria are given for second order nonlinear ordinary differential equations with alternating coefficients. The results involve a condition obtained by Kamenev for linear differential equations. The obtained criterion for superlinear differential equations is a complement of the work established by Kwong and Wong, and Philos, for sublinear differential equations and by Yan for linear differential equations.

Let G = ⊕∞i=0Zp, where p is a prime, let s be the shift mapping the i th summand of G to the (i+1) st and let ω be a 2 cocycle on G with values in S1, for which ω (s(g), s(h)) = ω (g, h). If Ω (ej, ek) = Ω (ek, ej) whenever │j - k│ is sufficiently large, where ei is the generator of the i th summand of G, then it is shown that the twisted group C* -algebra C*(G, ω) is isomorphic to the UHF algebra UHF (p∞). An immediate consequence, by results of Bures and Yin, is the existence of infinitely many non-conjugate shifts on UHF (p∞).

The structure of semigroups with atomistic congruence lattices (that is, each congruence is the supremum of the atoms it contains) is studied. For the weakly reductive case the problem of describing the structure of such semigroups is solved up to simple and congruence free semigroups, respectively. As applications, all commutative, finite, completely semisimple semigroups, respectively, with atomistic congruence lattices are described.

The theory of multimeasures (set valued measures), has its origins in mathematical economics and in particular in equilibrium theory for exchange economies with production, in which the coalitions and not the individual agents are the basic economic units (see Vind [25] and Hildenbrand [15]). Since then the subject of multimeasures has been developed extensively. Important contributions were made, among others, by Artstein [1], Costé [8], [9], Costé and Pallu de la Barrière [10], Drewnowski [12], Godet-Thobie [13], Hiai [14] and Pallu de la Barrière [17]. Further applications in mathematical economics can be found in Klein and Thompson [16] and Papageorgiou [19].

In this paper we consider O. Bonnet III-isometry (or BIII-isometry) of surfaces in 3-dimensional Euclidean space E3 Suppose a map F: M → M* is a diffeomorphism, and F* (III*) = III, ki(m) = k*i (m*), i = 1, 2, where m ∈ M, m* ∈ M*, m* = F (m), ki and k*i are the principal curvatures of surfaces M and M* at the points m and m*, respectively, III and III* are the third fundmental forms of M and M*, respectively. In this case, we call F an O. Bonnet III-isometry from M to M*. O. Bonnet I-isometries were considered in references [1]-[5].

We distinguish three cases about BIII-surfaces, which admits a non-trivial BIII-ismetry. We obtain some geometric properties of BIII-surfaces and BIII-isometries in these three cases; see Theorems 1, 2, 3 (in Section 2). We study some special BIII-surfaces: the minimal BIII-surfaces; BIII-surfaces of revolution; and BIII-surfaces with constant Gaussian curvature; see Theorems 4, 5, 6 (in Section 3).

Matching theorems, fixed point theorems and minimax inequalities are obtained in H-spaces which generalize the corresponding results of Bae-Kim-Tan, Browder, Fan, Horvath, Kim, Ko-Tan, Shih-Tan, Takahashi, Tan and Tarafdar to non-compact and/or non-convex settings.

This paper considers analogs of results on integral operators studied by Hörmander. Using the sharp function introduced by Fefferman and Stein, we prove weighted norm inequalities on kernel operators which map an Lp space into an Lq space, with q not equal to p. The techniques recover known results about fractional integral operators and apply to multiplier operators which satisfy a generalization of the Hörmander multiplier condition.

Let λ0 be a semisimple eigenvalue of an operator T0. Let Γ0 be a circle with centre λs0 containing no other spectral value of T0. Some lower bounds are obtained for the convergence radius of the power series for the spectral projection P(t) and for trace T(t)P(t) associated with linear perturbation family T(t) = T0 + tV0 and the circle Γ0. They are useful when T0 is a member of a sequence (Tn) which approximates an operator T in a collectively compact manner. These bounds result from a modification of Kato's method of majorizing series, based on an idea of Redont. I λ0 is simple, it is shown that the same lower bound are valid for the convergence radius of a power series yielding an eigenvector of T(t).

Let g1, g2, …, gn be a sequence of mutually independent, normally distributed, random variables with mathematical expectation zero and variance unity. In this work, we obtain the average number of real zeros of the random algebraic equations Σnk=1 Kσ gk(ω)tk = C, where C is a constant independent of t and not necessarily zero. This average is (1/π) log n, when n is large and σ is non-negative.

Two different ordinary differential operators L1 and L2 (not of the same order) defined on two adjacent intervals I1 and I2, respectively, with certain mixed conditions at the interface are considered. These problems are encountered in the study of ‘acoustic waveguides in ocean’, ‘transverse vibrations in nonhomogeneous strings’, etc. A complete set of physical conditions on the system give rise to three types of (selfadjoint) boundary value problems associated with the pair (L1, L2). In a series of papers, a systematic study of these new classes of problems is being developed. In the present paper, we construct the fundamental systems and exhibit the forms of solutions of nonhomogeneous problems associated with the pair (L1, L2).
