Hardy’s uncertainty principle for the Gabor transform is proved for locally compact abelian groups having noncompact identity component and groups of the form $\mathbb{R}^{n}\times K$, where $K$ is a compact group having irreducible representations of bounded dimension. We also show that Hardy’s theorem fails for a connected nilpotent Lie group $G$ which admits a square integrable irreducible representation. Further, a similar conclusion is made for groups of the form $G\times D$, where $D$ is a discrete group.

In this paper we survey recent developments in the classical theory of minimal surfaces in Euclidean spaces which have been obtained as applications of both classical and modern complex analytic methods; in particular, Oka theory, period dominating holomorphic sprays, gluing methods for holomorphic maps, and the Riemann–Hilbert boundary value problem. Emphasis is on results pertaining to the global theory of minimal surfaces, in particular, the Calabi–Yau problem, constructions of properly immersed and embedded minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ and in minimally convex domains of $\mathbb{R}^{n}$, results on the complex Gauss map, isotopies of conformal minimal immersions, and the analysis of the homotopy type of the space of all conformal minimal immersions from a given open Riemann surface.

Let ${\mathcal{D}}_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}}$ be Dirichlet spaces with superharmonic weights induced by positive Borel measures $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}$ on the open unit disk. Denote by $M({\mathcal{D}}_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}})$ Möbius invariant function spaces generated by ${\mathcal{D}}_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}}$. In this paper, we investigate the relation among ${\mathcal{D}}_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}}$, $M({\mathcal{D}}_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}})$ and some Möbius invariant function spaces, such as the space $BMOA$ of analytic functions on the open unit disk with boundary values of bounded mean oscillation and the Dirichlet space. Applying the relation between $BMOA$ and $M({\mathcal{D}}_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}})$, under the assumption that the weight function $K$ is concave, we characterize the function $K$ such that ${\mathcal{Q}}_{K}=BMOA$. We also describe inner functions in $M({\mathcal{D}}_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}})$ spaces.

We present some properties of orthogonality and relate them with support disjoint and norm inequalities in $p$-Schatten ideals. In addition, we investigate the problem of characterization of norm-parallelism for bounded linear operators. We consider the characterization of the norm-parallelism problem in $p$-Schatten ideals and locally uniformly convex spaces. Later on, we study the case when an operator is norm-parallel to the identity operator. Finally, we give some equivalence assertions about the norm-parallelism of compact operators. Some applications and generalizations are discussed for certain operators.

Let ${\mathcal{H}}=\mathbb{C}^{n}\otimes {\mathcal{E}}$ be the tensor product of a Euclidean space $\mathbb{C}^{n}$ and a separable Hilbert space ${\mathcal{E}}$. Our main object is the operator $G=I_{n}\otimes S+A\otimes I_{{\mathcal{E}}}$, where $S$ is a normal operator in ${\mathcal{E}}$, $A$ is an $n\times n$ matrix, and $I_{n},I_{{\mathcal{E}}}$ are the unit operators in $\mathbb{C}^{n}$ and ${\mathcal{E}}$, respectively. Numerous differential operators with constant matrix coefficients are examples of operator $G$. In the present paper we show that $G$ is similar to an operator $M=I_{n}\otimes S+\hat{D}\times I_{{\mathcal{E}}}$ where $\hat{D}$ is a block matrix, each block of which has a unique eigenvalue. We also obtain a bound for the condition number. That bound enables us to establish norm estimates for functions of $G$, nonregular on the closed convex hull $\operatorname{co}(G)$ of the spectrum of $G$. The functions $G^{-\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}}\;(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}>0)$ and $(\ln G)^{-1}$ are examples of such functions. In addition, in the appropriate situations we improve the previously published estimates for the resolvent and functions of $G$ regular on $\operatorname{co}(G)$. Since differential operators with variable coefficients often can be considered as perturbations of operators with constant coefficients, the results mentioned above give us estimates for functions and bounds for the spectra of differential operators with variable coefficients.

In this paper, we introduce a symmetry geometry for all those mathematical structures which can be characterized by means of a generalization (which we call pairing) of a finite rectangular table. In more detail, let $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA}$ be a given set. A pairing$\mathfrak{P}$ on $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA}$ is a triple $\mathfrak{P}:=(U,F,\unicode[STIX]{x1D6EC})$, where $U$ and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6EC}$ are nonempty sets and $F:U\times \unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA}\rightarrow \unicode[STIX]{x1D6EC}$ is a map having domain $U\times \unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA}$ and codomain $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6EC}$. Through this notion, we introduce a local symmetry relation on $U$ and a global symmetry relation on the power set ${\mathcal{P}}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA})$. Based on these two relations, we establish the basic properties of our symmetry geometry induced by $\mathfrak{P}$. The basic tool of our study is a closure operator $M_{\mathfrak{P}}$, by means of which (in the finite case) we can represent any closure operator. We relate the study of such a closure operator to several types of others set operators and set systems which refine the notion of an abstract simplicial complex.

We revisit the coordinatisation method for projective planes by considering the consequences of using finite fields to coordinatise projective planes of prime power order. This leads to some general restrictions on the form of the resulting planar ternary ring (PTR) when viewed as a trivariate polynomial over the field. We also consider how the Lenz–Barlotti type of the plane being coordinatised impacts the form of the PTR polynomial, thereby deriving further restrictions.

Classical finite association schemes lead to finite-dimensional algebras which are generated by finitely many stochastic matrices. Moreover, there exist associated finite hypergroups. The notion of classical discrete association schemes can be easily extended to the possibly infinite case. Moreover, this notion can be relaxed slightly by using suitably deformed families of stochastic matrices by skipping the integrality conditions. This leads to a larger class of examples which are again associated with discrete hypergroups. In this paper we propose a topological generalization of association schemes by using a locally compact basis space $X$ and a family of Markov-kernels on $X$ indexed by some locally compact space $D$ where the supports of the associated probability measures satisfy some partition property. These objects, called continuous association schemes, will be related to hypergroup structures on $D$. We study some basic results for this notion and present several classes of examples. It turns out that, for a given commutative hypergroup, the existence of a related continuous association scheme implies that the hypergroup has many features of a double coset hypergroup. We, in particular, show that commutative hypergroups, which are associated with commutative continuous association schemes, carry dual positive product formulas for the characters. On the other hand, we prove some rigidity results in particular in the compact case which say that for given spaces $X,D$ there are only a few continuous association schemes.

Left restriction semigroups are the unary semigroups that abstractly characterize semigroups of partial maps on a set, where the unary operation associates to a map the identity element on its domain. This paper is the sequel to two recent papers by the author, melding the results of the first, on membership in the variety $\mathbf{B}$ of left restriction semigroups generated by Brandt semigroups and monoids, with the connection established in the second between subvarieties of the variety $\mathbf{B}_{R}$ of two-sided restriction semigroups similarly generated and varieties of categories, in the sense of Tilson. We show that the respective lattices ${\mathcal{L}}(\mathbf{B})$ and ${\mathcal{L}}(\mathbf{B}_{R})$ of subvarieties are almost isomorphic, in a very specific sense. With the exception of the members of the interval $[\mathbf{D},\mathbf{D}\vee \mathbf{M}]$, every subvariety of $\mathbf{B}$ is induced from a member of $\mathbf{B}_{R}$ and vice versa. Here $\mathbf{D}$ is generated by the three-element left restriction semigroup $D$ and $\mathbf{M}$ is the variety of monoids. The analogues hold for pseudovarieties.

For the class of self-similar measures in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ with overlaps that are essentially of finite type, we set up a framework for deriving a closed formula for the $L^{q}$-spectrum of the measure for $q\geq 0$. This framework allows us to include iterated function systems that have different contraction ratios and those in higher dimension. For self-similar measures with overlaps, closed formulas for the $L^{q}$-spectrum have only been obtained earlier for measures satisfying Strichartz’s second-order identities. We illustrate how to use our results to prove the differentiability of the $L^{q}$-spectrum, obtain the multifractal dimension spectrum, and compute the Hausdorff dimension of the measure.

An EMV-algebra resembles an MV-algebra in which a top element is not guaranteed. For $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70E}$-complete $EMV$-algebras, we prove an analogue of the Loomis–Sikorski theorem showing that every $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70E}$-complete $EMV$-algebra is a $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70E}$-homomorphic image of an $EMV$-tribe of fuzzy sets where all algebraic operations are defined by points. To prove it, some topological properties of the state-morphism space and the space of maximal ideals are established.

Let $h(n)$ denote the largest product of distinct primes whose sum does not exceed $n$. The main result of this paper is that the property for all $n\geq 1$, we have $\log h(n)<\sqrt{\text{li}^{-1}(n)}$ (where $\text{li}^{-1}$ denotes the inverse function of the logarithmic integral) is equivalent to the Riemann hypothesis.

Let $G$ be a semisimple complex algebraic group with Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$. For a nilpotent $G$-orbit ${\mathcal{O}}\subset \mathfrak{g}$, let $d_{{\mathcal{O}}}$ denote the maximal dimension of a subspace $V\subset \mathfrak{g}$ that is contained in the closure of ${\mathcal{O}}$. In this note, we prove that $d_{{\mathcal{O}}}\leq {\textstyle \frac{1}{2}}\dim {\mathcal{O}}$ and this upper bound is attained if and only if ${\mathcal{O}}$ is a Richardson orbit. Furthermore, if $V$ is $B$-stable and $\dim V={\textstyle \frac{1}{2}}\dim {\mathcal{O}}$, then $V$ is the nilradical of a polarisation of ${\mathcal{O}}$. Every nilpotent orbit closure has a distinguished $B$-stable subspace constructed via an $\mathfrak{sl}_{2}$-triple, which is called the Dynkin ideal. We then characterise the nilpotent orbits ${\mathcal{O}}$ such that the Dynkin ideal (1) has the minimal dimension among all $B$-stable subspaces $\mathfrak{c}$ such that $\mathfrak{c}\cap {\mathcal{O}}$ is dense in $\mathfrak{c}$, or (2) is the only $B$-stable subspace $\mathfrak{c}$ such that $\mathfrak{c}\cap {\mathcal{O}}$ is dense in $\mathfrak{c}$.

Fix a finite semigroup $S$ and let $a_{1},\ldots ,a_{k},b$ be tuples in a direct power $S^{n}$. The subpower membership problem (SMP) for $S$ asks whether $b$ can be generated by $a_{1},\ldots ,a_{k}$. For combinatorial Rees matrix semigroups we establish a dichotomy result: if the corresponding matrix is of a certain form, then the SMP is in P; otherwise it is NP-complete. For combinatorial Rees matrix semigroups with adjoined identity, we obtain a trichotomy: the SMP is either in P, NP-complete, or PSPACE-complete. This result yields various semigroups with PSPACE-complete SMP including the six-element Brandt monoid, the full transformation semigroup on three or more letters, and semigroups of all $n$ by $n$ matrices over a field for $n\geq 2$.
