Contemplating how the familiar trope of the “bad Black mother” is used to surveil, punish, and scorn Black maternal subjects this article considers how good motherhood is at once aspirational and coercive for Black mothers who are disciplined by the ever looming threat of badness and the unattainable promise of goodness. Stretching contemporary Black feminist analyses of how Black maternal revolt against anti-Black logics can be witnessed through forms of mortal sacrifice that secure future Black life, this article troubles ideals of sacrifice through an auto-ethnographic reading of maternal death as a respite from the continuous labors of goodness for the subject that tires under the relentless force of racism and its anticipations of bad Black motherhood. Badness is then explored, through personal narrative, as a form of affective resistance against the drudgery of willing towards goodness as the maternal refuses to discipline their discontent.
Tropical drylands are characterized by extreme environmental conditions that, coupled with anthropogenic habitat degradation, can limit the occurrence of native species. Species that are most sensitive to these pressures may be prone to disappear in the context of climate change. In this study, we evaluated the influence of environmental and anthropogenic variables on the occurrence of large mammals and birds at the Tatacoa Desert, an arid region in central Colombia. We tested the relationship between the magnitude of the species’ responses to environmental, human-related variables and to body mass, and percentage of carnivory. Overall, we found a positive association between forest cover and the occupancy of the largest mammals (> 8kg), negative associations between solar radiation and human footprint with individual species occupancy, and a positive association of species occupancy with distance to touristic sites. Our results suggest that the largest and/or more carnivore species may be affected positively by forest cover and negatively by intense solar radiation highlighting the consequences of the increasing process of desertification on large mammals and birds at the upper Magdalena River basin of Colombia under the current scenario of global climate change.
Pi-d2, which encodes a potential serine-threonine receptor-like kinase (RLK) membrane-spanning protein consisting of 825 amino acids, confers resistance to Magnaporthe oryzae strain ZB15 via an unidentified recognition mechanism. In this study, the Pid2 alleles of 303 rice (O. sativa) varieties from China's Yunnan region were amplified and sequenced in order to produce 24 haplotypes and 16 translation variants. Six of twenty-four alleles possessing the resistant site at the 441st amino acid were chosen for evaluating blast resistance by transforming into the blast-vulnerable rice variety Nipponbare. After being infected with 11 strains of M. oryzae, all transgenic lines exhibited resistance to ZB-15, whereas resistance to other strains varied. Notably, Pi-d2_H23 and Pi-d2_H24 exhibited resistance to all M. oryzae strains tested, indicating that these two alleles may have a broader resistance spectrum to M. oryzae. Alignment of these alleles’ amino acid sequences revealed that the differences in blast resistance spectra were primarily related to the amino acids present in the PAN domain at position 363 (valine/alanine). These findings suggested that the two extracellular signal recognition domains of PI-D2, B-lectin and PAN, may play a role in the identification of M. oryzae effectors. The present results provide insight into the mechanism of interaction between RLKs and M. oryzae.
The high-pressure behaviour of inderborite [ideally CaMg[B3O3(OH)5]2(H2O)4⋅2H2O, space group C2/c with a≈ 12.14, b≈ 7.43, c≈ 19.23 Å and β ≈ 90.3° at room conditions] has been studied by two in situ single-crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiments up to ~10 GPa, using He as pressure-transmitting fluid. Between 8.11(5) and 8.80(5) GPa, inderborite undergoes a first-order phase transition to its high-pressure polymorph, inderborite-II (with a≈ 11.37, b≈ 6.96, c≈ 17.67 Å, β ≈ 96.8° and ΔV ≈ 7.0%, space group unknown). The isothermal bulk modulus (KV0 = β−1P0,T0, where βP0,T0 is the volume compressibility coefficient) of inderborite was found to be KV0 = 41(1) GPa. The destructive nature of the phase transition prevented any structure resolution of inderborite-II or even the continuation of the experiments at pressures higher than 10.10(5) GPa. In the pressure range 0–8.11(5) GPa, the compressional anisotropy of inderborite, indicated by the ratio between the principal components of the Eulerian finite unit-strain ellipsoid, is ɛ1:ɛ2:ɛ3 = 1.4:1.05:1. The deformation mechanisms at the atomic scale in inderborite are here described. Our findings support the hypothesis of a quasi-linear correlation between the total H2O content and P-stability range in hydrated borates, as the pressure at which inderborite undergoes the phase transition falls in line with most of the hydrate borates studied at high-pressure so far.
The Ethiopian core collection of the USDA-Agriculture Research Service, National Plant Germplasm System (NPGS) includes 376 accessions and a genomic characterization that revealed 151,210 single nucleotide polymorphisms. This collection, however, lacks phenotypic characterization for several important agriculture traits. A total of 330 accessions from this NPGS Ethiopian core set were evaluated for grain mould resistance response across four tropical environments. Most of the accessions in the NPGS Ethiopian collection showed susceptibility to grain mould based on the low emergence rate and high seed deterioration observed in the seeds. The population structure of the collection was not related to grain mould resistance response suggesting this germplasm originated in regions with low disease pressure. The analysis identified two accessions with high emergence (PI 457867 and PI 454221) and three (PI 455036, PI 455213 and PI 330821) with low seed degradation. Genome-wide association analysis found genomic regions in chromosome 1, 3 and 8 associated with the observed grain mould resistance variation. Candidate gene analysis within these three loci identified diseases resistance genes involved in pathogen recognition and signalling cascades of the plant immunity system. These five NPGS Ethiopian accessions are candidates for use in a pre-breeding germplasm programme to develop improved germplasm with grain mould resistance.
Path planning for the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is to assist in finding the proper path, serving as a critical role in the intelligence of a UAV. In this paper, a path planning for UAV in three-dimensional environment (3D) based on enhanced gravitational search algorithm (EGSA) is put forward, taking the path length, yaw angle, pitch angle, and flight altitude as considerations of the path. Considering EGSA is easy to fall into local optimum and convergence insufficiency, two factors that are the memory of current optimal and random disturbance with chaotic levy flight are adopted during the update of particle velocity, improving the balance between exploration and exploitation for EGSA through different time-varying characteristics. With the identical cost function, EGSA is compared with seven peer algorithms, such as moth flame optimization algorithm, gravitational search algorithm, and five variants of gravitational search algorithm. The experimental results demonstrate that EGSA is superior to the seven comparison algorithms on CEC 2020 benchmark functions and the path planning method based on EGSA is more valuable than the other seven methods in diverse environments.
We highlight an important but overlooked characteristic of financial fragility: “Fragile” stocks command higher liquidity. This reduces their sensitivity to corporate actions with price impact and affects the firms’ incentives to engage in such actions. We show that fragile firms have lower share repurchases, issue more equity, and invest more. We establish causality by relating changes in corporate actions to exogenous changes in fragility induced by mergers of asset managers. Our results suggest that financial fragility has direct but unexpected real implications for corporate actions.
We report a case of a residual aortopulmonary window where a new Konar-MF occluder device was used to close the defect. This device has a low profile and conforms to the anatomy of aortopulmonary window very nicely without unnecessary protrusion on either side. This report highlights the advantage of Konar-MF occluder device for closure of such defects.
A total of five specimens of sand crab, Jonas kalpakkamensis Barathkumar, Das & Satpathy, 2016 were recorded for the first time from the Western Indian Ocean. The sand crab specimens were collected from the bycatch of the commercial demersal trawler targeting crustaceans at a depth of 15–50 m operated along the western region of the Gujarat coastal waters. The collected specimen consists of 3 males and 2 females and it was identified by comparing with holotype and paratype specimens. Previously, J. kalpakkamensis was reported from the Eastern Indian Ocean in the Bay of Bengal region but there is no report or distribution of this sand crab in the Western Indian Ocean. The detailed taxonomic diagnostic character of the sand crab, J. kalpakkamensis and the key for all species under the genus Jonas reported globally is provided in the current study.
Multiple studies have demonstrated that European colonization of the Americas led to the death of nearly all North American dog mitochondrial lineages and replacement with European ones sometime between AD 1492 and the present day. Historical records indicate that colonists imported dogs from Europe to North America, where they became objects of interest and exchange as early as the seventeenth century. However, it is not clear whether the earliest archaeological dogs recovered from colonial contexts were of European, Indigenous, or mixed descent. To clarify the ancestry of dogs from the Jamestown Colony, Virginia, we sequenced ancient mitochondrial DNA from six archaeological dogs from the period 1609–1617. Our analysis shows that the Jamestown dogs have maternal lineages most closely associated with those of ancient Indigenous dogs of North America. Furthermore, these maternal lineages cluster with dogs from Late Woodland, Hopewell, and Virginia Algonquian archaeological sites. Our recovery of Indigenous dog lineages from a European colonial site suggests a complex social history of dogs at the interface of Indigenous and European populations during the early colonial period.
It is widely acknowledged that personal therapy positively contributes to the continued personal well-being and ongoing professional development of mental health professionals, including psychiatrists. As a result, most training bodies continue to recommend personal therapy to their trainees. Given its reported value and benefits, one might hypothesize that a high proportion of psychiatrists avail of personal therapy. This systematic review seeks to investigate whether this is the case.
Aim:
To identify and evaluate the findings derived from all available survey-based studies reporting quantitative data regarding psychiatrists’ and psychiatry trainees’ engagement in personal therapy.
Method:
A systematic search for survey-based studies about the use of personal therapy by psychiatric practitioners was conducted in four databases and platforms (PubMed, Scopus, Embase and EbscoHost) from inception to May 2022 following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Studies were assessed for quality using the quality assessment checklist for survey studies in psychology (Q-SSP) and findings summarized using narrative synthesis.
Results:
The proportion of trainees who engaged in personal therapy ranged from a low of 13.4% in a recent UK based study to a high of 65.3% among Israeli residents. The proportion of fully qualified psychiatrists who engaged in personal therapy varied from 32.1% in South Korea to 89% in New Zealand.
Conclusion:
This review represents the first known attempt to collect and synthesize data aimed at providing insights into the past and current trends in psychiatrists’ use of personal therapy across different geographic regions and career stages.
Overcoming metaphysics in Heidegger's sense requires that we experience ‘the ground out of which the history of being first reveals its nature (Wesen)’ (Heidegger 2000: 67). What overcoming metaphysics means for Heidegger is not just doing without metaphysics, but getting at the source of our understanding of and relation to what is, to being. He does this by studying the history of Western philosophy and by asking ‘why is it that being lets itself be thought as metaphysics?’ Heidegger finds that the history of philosophy is not a history of a progressively better conceptual grasp of what is, but a history of a prejudice, a story about an oversight and a forgetting, and the philosophy of Hegel is its culmination. Heidegger thinks of his own philosophy as working in the aftermath of metaphysics, and his project has clear affinities with both Hegel's and Pippin's projects, in that a central philosophical task is to figure out what has happened to us.
This cross-sectional study aims to describe and compare energy, nutrient intake and food consumption according to eating location and by age groups using data from the National Food, Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey (IAN-AF 2015/2016). Dietary intake was estimated by two non-consecutive days of food diaries (children)/24-h recalls (other age groups), and four eating location categories were defined according to the proportion of meals consumed at out-of-home locations: Home (at least 80 % of meals at home), Other Homes, School or Work and Restaurants and Other Places. The majority of meals (69·1 %) were consumed at home. Meals were also often taken at school by children and adolescents and in restaurants and similar outlets by adults and elderly. Children and adolescents in the School or Work category ate more fruit, vegetables and pulses and cereals and starchy tubers, whereas adults in this category ate more red and processed meats, sugar-sweetened beverages and sweets. Compared with Home category, Restaurants and Other Places was associated with worse diet adequacies among children (β = –1·0; 95 % CI = –2·0, −0·04), adolescents: (β = –2·4; 95 % CI = –3·2, −1·5) and adults (β = –1·3; 95 % CI = –1·6, −1·0) reflecting higher intakes of energy, fat, trans-fatty acids and SFA, and Na. The elderly consumed more free sugars and fat when eating out of home in general. Overall, findings reflect important variation in nutrient profiles by eating location, with meals taken at school or work contributing to higher consumption of nutrient-dense foods and those taken in restaurants and other similar settings implying higher consumption of energy-dense foods.
The present study aims to demonstrate the application of the oblique temperature gradient (OTG) to manipulate the buoyancy instabilities and resulting mixing. To accomplish this, we consider a model consisting of a liquid layer supported by a perfectly conducting bottom wall from below and the upper surface is exposed to ambient inert gas in a shallow container. The stability analysis employs the pseudospectral method and perturbation energy budget approach. The imposed OTG consists of a negative vertical temperature gradient (VTG), which leads to unstable density stratification, and a negative horizontal temperature gradient (HTG) component responsible for the Hadley circulation, which can be utilised to control instabilities. Without the HTG, a Rayleigh–Bénard mode of instability exists due to the imposed VTG termed as a VTG mode. The imposed HTG induces a linear VTG term and a quintic polynomial VTG term in the bottom wall-normal coordinate $y$. The induced linear VTG term reinforces the imposed VTG, while the induced quintic polynomial VTG term opposes the imposed VTG. For the vanishing Biot number ($Bi$), the induced quintic VTG term stabilises the VTG mode for the Prandtl number, $Pr=7$. However, for $Pr=0.01$, the Reynolds stresses associated with the Hadley circulation destabilise the VTG mode. For non-zero $Bi$, new streamwise and spanwise instability modes arise for $Pr=7$ due to the induced linear VTG term. Physical arguments show that the unstable density stratification near the gas–liquid interface caused by the synergistic effect of the imposed VTG and the induced linear VTG term lead to the existence of the predicted new modes. The present study thus shows that the strength of the HTG can be utilised to control the instability modes and critical parameters, thereby demonstrating the utility of the OTG in manipulating the buoyancy instabilities.
Are workers effective lawmakers? Throughout American history, some politicians and elites have argued that white-collar Americans are more qualified than working-class Americans to govern. To date, however, we know relatively little about the legislative effectiveness of working-class lawmakers. I develop a theory of class-based electoral selection that links class-based discrimination in elections to legislators’ performance in office. I argue that working-class candidates face class-based biases in elections that make it more difficult to emerge and successfully win elective office. As a result, I expect the working-class candidates who do become lawmakers to be equally or more effective than their white-collar colleagues. To test these expectations, I create a data set merging the occupational background of more than 14,000 individual state legislators with their state legislative effectiveness score (SLES). The resulting data set includes more than 50,000 state legislator-term specific observations. Consistent with my expectations, I find that working-class lawmakers do not underperform white-collar lawmakers. Further, I provide evidence that, across various models and specifications, the gap between working-class and white-collar legislators’ effectiveness is negligible.
This study aimed to investigate the association between maternal birth weight (MBW) with preterm delivery (PTD) in the Japanese population. To this end, a total of 78,972 Japanese pregnant women were included in a prospective birth cohort study. Multiple logistic regression and multinominal logistic regression models were applied to investigate the associations of MBW with PTD (delivery from 22 to < 37 weeks of gestation), early PTD (delivery from 22 to < 34 weeks), and late PTD (delivery from 34 to < 37 weeks). The results showed that MBW was inversely associated with PTD, early PTD, and late PTD (p-for-trend < 0.0001, 0.0014, and < 0.0001, respectively). The adjusted odds ratios per each 500 g of MBW decrease were 1.167 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.118–1.218) for PTD, 1.174 (95% CI: 1.070–1.287) for early PTD and 1.151 (95% CI: 1.098–1.206) for late PTD. The effect size of the association of MBW with early PTD was similar to that with late PTD. This study demonstrated for the first time an association of a low MBW with PTD, early PTD, and late PTD in a Japanese nationwide cohort.
Path loss prediction (PLP) is an important feature of wireless communications because it allows a receiver to anticipate the signal strength that will be received from a transmitter at a given distance. The PLP is done by using machine learning models that take into account numerous aspects such as the frequency of the signal, the surroundings, and the type of antenna. Various machine learning methods are used to anticipate path loss propagation but it is difficult to predict path loss in unknown propagation conditions. In existing models rely on incomplete or outdated data, which can affect the accuracy and reliability of predictions and they do not take into account the effects of environmental factors, such as terrain, foliage, and weather conditions, on path loss. Furthermore, existing models are not robust enough to handle the real-world variability and uncertainty, leading to significant errors in predictions. To tackle this issue, a novel ultrahigh frequency (UHF) PLP based on K-nearest neighbors (KNNs) is developed for predicting and optimizing the path loss for UHF. In this proposed model, a KNN-based PLP has been used to predict the path loss in the UHF. This technique is used for high-accuracy PLP through KNN forecast route loss by determining the K-nearest data points to a particular test point based on a distance metric. Moreover, the existing models were not able to optimize path loss due to complex and large-scale machine learning models. Therefore, the stochastic gradient descent technique has been used to minimize the objective function, which is often a measure of the difference between the model’s predictions and the actual output that will fine-tune the parameters of the KNN model, by measuring the similarity between data points. This model is implemented using Python to make it a lot more convenient.
