This article describes the group of ninth-century Zoroastrian philosophers I call the ‘Dēnkard School’ and sketches the way they do philosophy. It presents their argument against substance dualism, which the Zoroastrians argue is in tension with the belief in repentance. From an analysis of this polemic, there follows a reconstruction of the Dēnkard School's own doctrine of the consubstantiality of body and soul. To understand these arguments, I describe some background eschatological and ontological beliefs upheld by the Dēnkard School and their specific conception of substance, which includes the notions of ownership and responsibility. Overall, the argument can be seen as a new position on a traditional problem, and so increasing the scope of philosophy in a more global perspective.
A wall-mounted, far-ultraviolet-C light technology reduced aerosolized bacteriophage MS2 by >3 log10 plaque-forming units within 30 minutes. Vegetative bacterial pathogens on steel disk carriers in the center of the room were reduced by >3 log10 after 45 minutes of exposure, but Candida auris and Clostridioides difficile spores were not.
Indication-driven order entry (IDOE) was implemented at our pediatric institution for cefazolin, piperacillin-tazobactam, and meropenem; the 3 most intervened upon antibiotics during prospective audit and feedback (PAF) by the antimicrobial stewardship program (ASP). IDOE was associated with a significant reduction in both ASP PAF recommendations and clinical pharmacist interventions.
Polymers maintain colloidal stability by adsorbing onto the surface of sepiolite particles, and changes in temperature and salinity can affect this process. We chose three typical polymers to investigate their interactions with sepiolite under high-salinity (15 wt.% NaCl) conditions at >180°C. Sepiolite samples were characterized using infrared testing, X-ray diffraction testing, contact angle testing, thermogravimetric testing, filtration loss testing and rheological testing. The experimental results showed that the desorption of the polymers under high-temperature and high-salinity conditions reduces the stability and filtration control of the suspension significantly. Adding polymers to sepiolite suspensions can maintain good stability even after thermal ageing at 240°C. In terms of drilling fluid regulation, sepiolite can play a role in regulating rheological properties, and the interactions between various polymers and sepiolite can be utilized to maintain the stable colloidal state of the drilling fluid. Studying the adsorption behaviour of various types of polymers on the surface of sepiolite under high-temperature and high-salinity conditions has important implications for the design and selection of sepiolite drilling fluid treatment agents.
Even the shortest flight through unknown, cluttered environments requires reliable local path planning algorithms to avoid unforeseen obstacles. The algorithm must evaluate alternative flight paths and identify the best path if an obstacle blocks its way. Commonly, weighted sums are used here. This work shows that weighted Chebyshev distances and factorial achievement scalarising functions are suitable alternatives to weighted sums if combined with the 3DVFH* local path planning algorithm. Both methods considerably reduce the failure probability of simulated flights in various environments. The standard 3DVFH* uses a weighted sum and has a failure probability of 50% in the test environments. A factorial achievement scalarising function, which minimises the worst combination of two out of four objective functions, reaches a failure probability of 26%; A weighted Chebyshev distance, which optimises the worst objective, has a failure probability of 30%. These results show promise for further enhancements and to support broader applicability.
We prove general Dwork-type congruences for constant terms attached to tuples of Laurent polynomials. We apply this result to establishing arithmetic and p-adic analytic properties of functions originating from polynomial solutions modulo $p^s$ of hypergeometric and Knizhnik–Zamolodchikov (KZ) equations, solutions which come as coefficients of master polynomials and whose coefficients are integers. As an application, we show that the simplest example of a p-adic KZ connection has an invariant line subbundle while its complex analog has no nontrivial subbundles due to the irreducibility of its monodromy representation.
Catheterisation is the gold standard used to evaluate pulmonary blood flow in patients with a Blalock–Thomas–Taussig shunt. It involves risk and cannot be performed frequently. This study aimed to evaluate if echocardiographic measurements obtained in a clinical setting correlate with catheterisation-derived pulmonary blood flow in patients with a Blalock–Thomas–Taussig shunt as the sole source of pulmonary blood flow.
Methods:
Chart review was performed retrospectively on consecutive patients referred to the catheterisation lab with a Blalock–Thomas–Taussig shunt. Echocardiographic parameters included peak, mean, and diastolic gradients across the Blalock–Thomas–Taussig shunt and forward and reverse velocity time integral across the distal transverse aorta. In addition to direct correlations, we tested a previously published formula for pulmonary blood flow calculated as velocity time integral across the shunt × heart rate × Blalock–Thomas–Taussig shunt area. Catheterisation parameters included pulmonary and systemic blood flow as calculated by the Fick principle.
Results:
18 patients were included. The echocardiography parameters and oxygen saturation did not correlate with catheterisation-derived pulmonary blood flow, systemic blood flow, or the ratio of pulmonary to systemic blood flow. As the ratio of reverse to forward velocity time integral across the transverse aorta increased, the probability of shunt stenosis decreased.
Conclusion:
Echocardiographic measurements obtained outside the catheterisation lab do not correlate with catheterisation-derived pulmonary blood flow. The ratio of reverse to forward velocity time integral across the transverse aortic arch may be predictive of Blalock–Thomas–Taussig shunt narrowing; this finding should be investigated further.
The pubertal transition is characterized by pronounced sex hormone fluctuation, refinement of affective neural circuitry, and an increased risk of depression in female adolescents. Sex hormones, including testosterone, exert modulatory effects on frontal-limbic brain networks and are associated with emotion dysregulation and depressive symptoms. Weekly changes in hormones predict affective symptoms in peripubertal female adolescents, particularly in the context of stress; however, the biobehavioral mechanisms underlying hormone change and mood relationships during the pubertal transition have yet to be determined and was the objective of the present study. Forty-three peripubertal female adolescents (ages 11–14) collected 8-weekly salivary hormone (estrone, testosterone) samples and mood assessments to evaluate hormone-mood relationships, followed by a biobehavioral testing session with psychosocial stress and EEG. Within-person correlations between weekly hormone changes and corresponding mood were performed to determine individual differences in mood sensitivity to weekly hormone change. Increased frontal theta activity indexing emotion reactivity, reduced cortisol reactivity, and reduced vagal efficiency predicted the strength of the relationship between testosterone and mood. Further, testosterone-sensitivity strength was associated with the enhancement of negative affect following stress testing. Results identify divergent frontal theta and stress responses as potential biobehavioral mechanisms underlying mood sensitivity to peripubertal testosterone fluctuation.
We tested the effectiveness of 23 disinfectants used in healthcare facilities against isolates from the 4 major clades of Candida auris. Sporicidal disinfectants were consistently effective, whereas quaternary-ammonium disinfectants had limited activity. Quaternary-ammonium–alcohol and hydrogen-peroxide–based disinfectants varied in effectiveness against C. auris.
Motivated by Melissa Ziad's balletic protest within Algeria's Hirak demonstrations, this article recuperates a distinction between the right to assembly and the right to free speech, constitutional guarantees blurred under contemporary rhetoric of association. By applying methods of dance studies to legal interpretation, it shifts crowd theory away from an anxiety of touch toward a copresence that allows for constituent power of the people to be reclaimed. Therefore, it intervenes within a broader discourse of the legal humanities that privileges the logocentric over embodied ways of knowing.
The LIPE gene (lipase E, hormone-sensitive type), also known as hormone-sensitive lipase, acts as a primary regulator of lipid metabolism during lactation in cows. We studied a total of two hundred Holstein–Friesian cows and performed sequencing analysis that revealed two synonymous nucleotide changes within the LIPE gene: a transition change, c.276 T > C in exon 2 (g.50631651 T > C; position 351 of GenBank: ON638900) and a transversion change, c.219C > A in exon 6 (g.50635369C > A; position 1070 of GenBank: ON638901). The observed genotypes were TC and CC for the c.276 T > C SNP and CC and CA for the c.219C > A SNP. Notably, the heterozygous TC genotype of the T351C SNP exhibited a significant association with high milk yield. Furthermore, the T351C SNP displayed significant associations with various milk parameters, including temperature, freezing point, density and the percentages of fat, protein, lactose, solids and solids-not-fat, with the homozygous CC genotype showing higher values. The c.219C > A SNP also demonstrated a significant association with milk composition, with heterozygous genotypes (CA) exhibiting higher percentages of fat, protein, and lactose compared to homozygous genotypes (CC). This effect was consistent among both high and low milk producers for fat and lactose percentages, while high milk producers exhibited a higher protein percentage than low milk producers. These findings highlight the importance of considering the detected SNPs in marker-assisted selection and breeding programs for the identification of high milk-producing Holstein–Friesian cows and potentially other breeds. Moreover, this study strongly supports the fundamental role of the LIPE gene in milk production and composition in lactating animals.
