American silk moth, Antheraea polyphemus Cramer 1775 (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae), native to North America, has potential significance in sericulture for food consumption and silk production. To date, the phylogenetic relationship and divergence time of A. polyphemus with its Asian relatives remain unknown. To end these issues, two mitochondrial genomes (mitogenomes) of A. polyphemus from the USA and Canada respectively were determined. The mitogenomes of A. polyphemus from the USA and Canada were 15,346 and 15,345 bp in size, respectively, with only two transitions and five indels. The two mitogenomes both encoded typical mitochondrial 37 genes. No tandem repeat elements were identified in the A+T-rich region of A. polyphemus. The mitogenome-based phylogenetic analyses supported the placement of A. polyphemus within the genus Antheraea, and revealed the presence of two clades for eight Antheraea species used: one included A. polyphemus, A. assamensis Helfer, A. formosana Sonan and the other contained A. mylitta Drury, A. frithi Bouvier, A. yamamai Guérin-Méneville, A. proylei Jolly, and A. pernyi Guérin-Méneville. Mitogenome-based divergence time estimation further suggested that the dispersal of A. polyphemus from Asia into North America might have occurred during the Miocene Epoch (18.18 million years ago) across the Berling land bridge. This study reports the mitogenome of A. polyphemus that provides new insights into the phylogenetic relationship among Antheraea species and the origin of A. polyphemus.
This paper proposes a new surface fitting method based on double model comparison to solve the aspherical surface parameters, allowing for the simultaneous extraction of the surface deviation and the optimal surface fitting parameters for the radio antenna’s main reflector. This method employs the laser tracker to obtain the 3D coordinates of the points on the antenna surface, which can be expressed in terms of Zernike polynomials. Then compare the Zernike polynomial description with the ideal aspherical equation description to establish a discrepancy model in the optical design software. Finally, by optimizing this model, the optimal surface parameters can be obtained. The simulation results show that the method is suitable for high-precision fitting of aspherical surfaces with cone coefficient K in the range of [−4, 0.3], with the maximum deviation percentage of the radius of curvature at 0.036% and the cone coefficient at 0.14%. Experimental research is conducted on the 3.2 m sector sub-aperture spliced radio antenna; the fitted radius of curvature is 2012.3204 mm, the conic coefficient is −1.0476, and the Root Mean Square (RMS) is 0.6232 mm, confirming the adaptability of this method.
Parental psychopathology is a known risk factor for child autistic-like traits. However, symptom-level associations and underlying mechanisms are poorly understood.
Methods
We utilized network analyses and cross-lagged panel models to investigate the specific parental psychopathology related to child autistic-like traits among 8,571 adolescents (mean age, 9.5 years at baseline), using baseline and 2-year follow-up data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study. Parental psychopathology was measured by the Adult Self Report, and child autistic-like traits were measured by three methods: the Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for DSM-5 autism spectrum disorder (ASD) subscale, the Child Behavior Checklist ASD subscale, and the Social Responsiveness Scale. We also examined the mediating roles of family conflict and children’s functional brain connectivity at baseline.
Results
Parental attention-deficit/hyperactivity problems were central symptoms and had a direct and the strongest link with child autistic-like traits in network models using baseline data. In longitudinal analyses, parental attention-deficit/hyperactivity problems at baseline were the only significant symptoms associated with child autistic-like traits at 2-year follow-up (β = 0.014, 95% confidence interval [0.010, 0.018], FDR q = 0.005), even accounting for children’s comorbid behavioral problems. The observed association was significantly mediated by family conflict (proportion mediated = 11.5%, p for indirect effect <0.001) and functional connectivity between the default mode and dorsal attention networks (proportion mediated = 0.7%, p for indirect effect = 0.047).
Conclusions
Parental attention-deficit/hyperactivity problems were associated with elevated autistic-like traits in offspring during adolescence.
An actively controllable cascaded proton acceleration driven by a separate 0.8 picosecond (ps) laser is demonstrated in proof-of-principle experiments. MeV protons, initially driven by a femtosecond laser, are further accelerated and focused into a dot structure by an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) on the solenoid, which can be tuned into a ring structure by increasing the ps laser energy. An electrodynamics model is carried out to explain the experimental results and show that the dot-structured proton beam is formed when the outer part of the incident proton beam is optimally focused by the EMP force on the solenoid; otherwise, it is overfocused into a ring structure by a larger EMP. Such a separately controlled mechanism allows precise tuning of the proton beam structures for various applications, such as edge-enhanced proton radiography, proton therapy and pre-injection in traditional accelerators.
Viscous fingering, a classic hydrodynamic instability, is governed by the the competition between destabilising viscosity ratios and stabilising surface tension or thermal diffusion. We show that the channel confinement can induce ‘diffusion’-like stabilising effects on viscous fingering even in the absence of interfacial tension and thermal diffusion, when a clear oil invades the mixture of the same oil and non-colloidal particles. The key lies in the generation of long-range dipolar disturbance flows by highly confined particles that form a monolayer inside a Hele-Shaw cell. We develop a coarse-grained model whose results correctly predict universal fingering dynamics that is independent of particle concentrations. This new mechanism offers insights into manipulating and harnessing collective motion in non-equilibrium systems.
The rising cost of oncology care has motivated efforts to quantify the overall value of cancer innovation. This study aimed to apply the MACBETH approach to the development of a value assessment framework (VAF) for lymphoma therapies.
Methods
A multi-attribute value theory methodological process was adopted. Analogous MCDA steps developed by the International Society for Health Economics and Outcomes Research (ISPOR) were carried out and a diverse multi-stakeholder group was recruited to construct the framework. The criteria were identified through a systematic literature review and selected according to the importance score of each criterion given by stakeholders, related research and expert opinions. The MACBETH method was used to score the performance of alternatives by establishing value functions for each criterion and to assign weight to criteria.
Results
Nine criteria were included in the final framework and a reusable model was built: quality adjusted life years (QALYs), median progression-free survival, objective response rate, the incidence of serious adverse events (grade 3–4), rates of treatment discontinuation due to adverse events, annual direct medical costs, dosage and administration, the number of alternative medicines with the same indication and mechanism, mortality of the disease. The weights of each criterion in the order presented above are 17.43 percent, 16.11 percent, 14.39 percent,13.54 percent,11.83 percent,11.30 percent,7.08 percent,4.59 percent, and 3.73 percent.
Conclusions
A criterion-based valuation framework was constructed using multiple perspectives to provide a quantitative assessment tool in facilitating the delivery of affordable and valuable lymphoma treatment. Further research is needed to optimize its use as part of policy-making.
Porcine small intestinal epithelial cell line (IPEC-J2) is a good research model exploring the impact of feed additives on intestinal epithelial cells. Monobutyrin (MB), as a derivative of butyric acid (BA), overcomes the shortcomings of BA. MB can maintain intestinal barrier function in animals, but its underlying regulatory mechanism is unknown. Thus, we used IPEC-J2 cells as the research object. We were using real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR, western blot, immunofluorescence, and transcriptomics technology to explore the effect of MB on the barrier function of IPEC-J2 cells and its regulatory mechanism. The results found that MB treatment could cause IPEC-J2 cells to occur a response to hypoxia at the transcriptional level, thereby increasing the expression of hypoxia-inducible factor 1 and phospho-extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 protein and improving the expression of tight junction proteins. Therefore, MB can alleviate the activation of the NF-κB signaling pathway. In addition, MB mitigates the damage to cell transmembrane glycoproteins, microvilli, and tight junctions caused by lipopolysaccharides (LPS) stimulation, thus resisting the effects of LPS. As a dietary supplement, MB has good application prospects in maintaining the intestinal epithelial barrier function of animals.
Amino acids are fundamental to sustaining life. They are crucial for intracellular processes, such as energy metabolism, biosynthesis of nucleotides, and maintenance of oxidative homeostasis. These processes ensure the proper functioning of cells (including immune cells) and organs. Many studies have demonstrated that immune cells, as key players in immune regulation, have distinct amino acid demands, and their rapid growth and activation are shaped by amino acid availability in their microenvironment. In particular, the proliferation, maturation, and functional responses of innate immune cells are closely linked to amino acid metabolism. The transport, sensing, and mobilization of amino acids drive metabolic reprogramming to support these processes. Therefore, this review focuses on the influence of amino acids on the fate and function of immune cells across development, homeostasis, activation, and effector phases, highlighting the underlying mechanisms. It provides a scientific basis for improving disease resistance and production efficiency in animals.
Little is known about the association between iodine nutrition status and bone health. The present study aimed to explore the connection between iodine nutrition status, bone metabolism parameters, and bone disease (osteopenia and osteoporosis). A cross-sectional survey was conducted involving 391, 395, and 421 adults from iodine fortification areas (IFA), iodine adequate areas (IAA), and iodine excess areas (IEA) of China. Iodine nutrition status, bone metabolism parameters and BMD were measured. Our results showed that, in IEA, the urine iodine concentrations (UIC) and serum iodine concentrations (SIC) were significantly higher than in IAA. BMD and Ca2+ levels were significantly different under different iodine nutrition levels and the BMD were negatively correlated with UIC and SIC. Univariate linear regression showed that gender, age, BMI, menopausal status, smoking status, alcohol consumption, UIC, SIC, free thyroxine, TSH, and alkaline phosphatase were associated with BMD. The prevalence of osteopenia was significantly increased in IEA, UIC ≥ 300 µg/l and SIC > 90 µg/l groups. UIC ≥ 300 µg/l and SIC > 90 µg/l were risk factors for BMD T value < –1·0 sd. In conclusion, excess iodine can not only lead to changes in bone metabolism parameters and BMD, but is also a risk factor for osteopenia and osteoporosis.
This study focused on the effect of the cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) combined with aripiprazole on cognitive functions and psychological state of schizophrenia patients. Seventy-eight schizophrenia patients were divided into two groups. One group received aripiprazole with conventional nursing treatment for 3 months (control group, n = 39), and the other received aripiprazole with CBT for 3 months (observation group, n = 39) (1 session per week, each session lasting 60 min. In the two groups before and after treatment, the severity of symptoms was evaluated using the Psychiatric Symptom Rating Scale (BPRS). Cognitive function was assessed with the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS). The Positive and Negative Symptom Scale (PANSS) was utilised to evaluate mental status, while the Generalised Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES) measured psychological state. Additionally, the quality of life was assessed using the General Quality of Life Inventory-74 (GQOLI-74). In the final analysis, post-treatment efficacy and complications for the two groups were counted. Both groups showed significant improvements: BPRS and PANSS scores decreased, while RBANS, GSES, and GQOLI-74 scores increased. The observation group showed greater improvements than the control group. The total improvement rate was 89.74% (35/39) in the observation group, higher than the 71.79% (28/39) in the control group. The complication rate was 33.33% (13/39) in the observation group and 38.46% (15/39) in the control group. The treatment of CBT combined with aripiprazole for schizophrenia has a significantly positive effect on the cognitive functions and psychological state of patients.
Rogue waves (RWs) can form on the ocean surface due to the well-known quasi-four-wave resonant interaction or superposition principle. The first is known as the nonlinear focusing mechanism and leads to an increased probability of RWs when unidirectionality and narrowband energy of the wave field are satisfied. This work delves into the dynamics of extreme wave focusing in crossing seas, revealing a distinct type of nonlinear RWs, characterised by a decisive longevity compared with those generated by the dispersive focusing (superposition) mechanism. In fact, through fully nonlinear hydrodynamic numerical simulations, we show that the interactions between two crossing unidirectional wave beams can trigger fully localised and robust development of RWs. These coherent structures, characterised by a typical spectral broadening then spreading in the form of dual bimodality and recurrent wave group focusing, not only defy the weakening expectation of quasi-four-wave resonant interaction in directionally spreading wave fields, but also differ from classical focusing mechanisms already mentioned. This has been determined following a rigorous lifespan-based statistical analysis of extreme wave events in our fully nonlinear simulations. Utilising the coupled nonlinear Schrödinger framework, we also show that such intrinsic focusing dynamics can be captured by weakly nonlinear wave evolution equations. This opens new research avenues for further explorations of these complex and intriguing wave phenomena in hydrodynamics as well as other nonlinear and dispersive multi-wave systems.
This study investigates the effects of fat emulsion-based early parenteral nutrition in patients following hemihepatectomy, addressing a critical gap in clinical knowledge regarding parenteral nutrition after hemihepatectomy. We retrospectively analysed clinical data from 274 patients who received non-fat emulsion-based parenteral nutrition (non-fatty nutrition group) and 297 patients who received fat emulsion-based parenteral nutrition (fatty nutrition group) after hemihepatectomy. Fat emulsion-based early parenteral nutrition significantly reduced levels of post-operative aspartate aminotransferase, total bilirubin and direct bilirubin, while minor decreases in red blood cell and platelet counts were observed in the fatty nutrition group. Importantly, fat emulsion-based early parenteral nutrition shortened lengths of post-operative hospital stay and fasting duration, but did not affect the incidence of short-term post-operative complications. Subgroup analyses revealed that the supplement of n-3 fish oil emulsions was significantly associated with a reduced inflammatory response and risk of post-operative infections. These findings indicate that fat emulsion-based early parenteral nutrition enhances short-term post-operative recovery in patients undergoing hemihepatectomy.
Major depressive disorder (MDD) and coronary heart disease (CHD) can both cause significant morbidity and mortality. The association of MDD and CHD has long been identified, but the mechanisms still require further investigation. Seven mRNA microarray datasets containing samples from patients with MDD and CHD were downloaded from Gene Expression Omnibus. Combined matrixes of MDD and CAD were constructed for subsequent analysis. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified. Functional enrichment analyses based on shared DEGs were conducted to identify pivotal pathways. A protein-protein network was also applied to further investigate the functional interaction. Results showed that 24 overlapping genes were identified. Enrichment analysis indicated that the shared genes are mainly associated with immune function and ribosome biogenesis. The functional interactions of shared genes were also demonstrated by PPI network analysis. In addition, three hub genes including MMP9, S100A8, and RETN were identified. Our results indicate that MDD and CHD have a genetic association. Genes relevant to immune function, especially IL-17 signalling pathway may be involved in the pathogenesis of MDD and CHD.
The study aims were to present in vitro susceptibilities of clinical isolates from Gram-negative bacteria bloodstream infections (GNBSI) collected in China. GNBSI isolates were collected from 18 tertiary hospitals in 7 regions of China from 2018 to 2020. Minimum inhibitory concentrations were assessed using a Trek Diagnostic System. Susceptibility was determined using CLSI broth microdilution, and breakpoints were interpreted using CLSI M100 (2021). A total of 1,815 GNBSI strains were collected, with E. coli (42.4%) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (28.6%) being the most prevalent species, followed by P. aeruginosa (6.7%). Susceptibility analyses revealed low susceptibilities (<40%) of ESBL-producing E. coli and K. pneumonia to third-/fourth-generation cephalosporins, monobactamases, and fluoroquinolones. High susceptibilities to colistin (95.0%) and amikacin (81.3%) were found for K. pneumoniae, while Acinetobacter baumannii exhibited a high susceptibility (99.2%) to colistin but a low susceptibility to other antimicrobials (<27.5%). Isolates from ICUs displayed lower drug susceptibility rates of K. pneumoniae and A. baumannii than isolates from non-ICUs (all P < 0.05). Carbapenem-resistant and ESBL-producing K. pneumoniae detection was different across regions (both P < 0.05). E. coli and K. pneumoniae were major contributors to GNBSI, while A. baumannii exhibited severe drug resistance in isolates obtained from ICU departments.
The dependence of the Richtmyer–Meshkov instability (RMI) on post-shock Atwood number ($A_1$) is experimentally investigated for a heavy–light single-mode interface. We create initial interfaces with density ratios of heavy to light gases ranging from 1.73 to 34.07, and achieve the highest $|A_1|$ value reported to date for gaseous-interface experiments (0.95). For the first time, spike acceleration is observed in experiments with a heavy–light configuration. The models for the start-up, linear and weakly nonlinear evolution stages are evaluated over a wide range of $A_1$ conditions. Specifically, the models proposed by Li et al. (Phys. Fluids, vol. 36, 2024, 056104) and Wouchuk & Nishihara (Phys. Plasmas, vol. 4, 1997, 1028–1038) effectively describe the start-up and linear stages, respectively, across all cases. None of the considered nonlinear models is valid under all $A_1$ conditions. Based on the dependence of spike and bubble evolutions on $A_1$ provided by the present work and previous study (Chen et al., J. Fluid Mech., vol. 975, 2023, A29), the SEA model (Sadot et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., vol. 80, 1998, pp. 1654–1657), whose expression has clear physical meanings, is modified by revising the coefficient that governs its prediction for early-time evolution. The modified model applies to prediction of the weakly nonlinear evolution of RMI with $A_1$ ranging from −0.95 to −0.35 and from 0.30 to 0.86. Based on this model, an approximation of the critical $A_1$ for the occurrence of spike acceleration is obtained.
Second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs) can cause corrected QT interval (QTc) prolongation as a side-effect. This may limit their clinical use and pose safety concerns for patients.
Aims
To analyse the risk of QTc prolongation associated with eight second-generation antipsychotics and observe the timing characteristics of QTc prolongation events and subsequent changes in medication strategies.
Methods
Using data from the hospital information system of a large mental health centre, this retrospective cohort study included 5130 patients (median follow-up: 141.2 days) treated between 2007 and 2019. A marginal structural Cox model was used to compare the hazard ratios for QTc prolongation associated with various SGAs.
Results
The mean age of the cohort was 35.54 years (s.d. = 14.22), and 47.8% (N = 2454) were male. Ziprasidone, amisulpride and olanzapine were the only SGAs associated with QTc prolongation. Ziprasidone presented the highest risk (hazard ratio 1.72, 95% CI: 1.03–2.85, adjusted P = 0.03), followed by amisulpride (hazard ratio 1.56, 95% CI: 1.04–2.34, adjusted P = 0.03) and olanzapine (hazard ratio 1.40, 95% CI: 1.02–1.94, adjusted P = 0.04).
Conclusion
Ziprasidone, amisulpride and olanzapine are associated with increased risk of QTc prolongation. Regular electrocardiogram monitoring is recommended when clinicians prescribe such drugs.
Depression has been linked to disruptions in resting-state networks (RSNs). However, inconsistent findings on RSN disruptions, with variations in reported connectivity within and between RSNs, complicate the understanding of the neurobiological mechanisms underlying depression.
Methods
A systematic literature search of PubMed and Web of Science identified studies that employed resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to explore RSN changes in depression. Studies using seed-based functional connectivity analysis or independent component analysis were included, and coordinate-based meta-analyses were performed to evaluate alterations in RSN connectivity both within and between networks.
Results
A total of 58 studies were included, comprising 2321 patients with depression and 2197 healthy controls. The meta-analysis revealed significant alterations in RSN connectivity, both within and between networks, in patients with depression compared with healthy controls. Specifically, within-network changes included both increased and decreased connectivity in the default mode network (DMN) and increased connectivity in the frontoparietal network (FPN). Between-network findings showed increased DMN–FPN and limbic network (LN)–DMN connectivity, decreased DMN–somatomotor network and LN–FPN connectivity, and varied ventral attention network (VAN)–dorsal attentional network (DAN) connectivity. Additionally, a positive correlation was found between illness duration and increased connectivity between the VAN and DAN.
Conclusions
These findings not only provide a comprehensive characterization of RSN disruptions in depression but also enhance our understanding of the neurobiological mechanisms underlying depression.
While the cross-sectional relationship between internet gaming disorder (IGD) and depression is well-established, whether IGD predicts future depression remains debated, and the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. This large-scale, three-wave longitudinal study aimed to clarify the predictive role of IGD in depression and explore the mediating effects of resilience and sleep distress.
Methods
A cohort of 41,215 middle school students from Zigong City was assessed at three time points: November 2021 (T1), November 2022 (T2) and November 2023 (T3). IGD, depression, sleep distress and resilience were measured using standardized questionnaires. Multiple logistic regression was used to examine the associations between baseline IGD and both concurrent and subsequent depression. Mediation analyses were conducted with T1 IGD as the predictor, T2 sleep distress and resilience as serial mediators and T3 depression as the outcome. To test the robustness of the findings, a series of sensitivity analyses were performed. Additionally, sex differences in the mediation pathways were explored.
Results
(1) IGD was independently associated with depression at baseline (T1: adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 4.76, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 3.79–5.98, p < 0.001), 1 year later (T2: AOR = 1.42, 95% CI: 1.16–1.74, p < 0.001) and 2 years later (T3: AOR = 1.24, 95% CI: 1.01–1.53, p = 0.042); (2) A serial multiple mediation effect of sleep distress and resilience was identified in the relationship between IGD and depression. The mediation ratio was 60.7% in the unadjusted model and 33.3% in the fully adjusted model, accounting for baseline depression, sleep distress, resilience and other covariates. The robustness of our findings was supported by various sensitivity analyses; and (3) Sex differences were observed in the mediating roles of sleep distress and resilience, with the mediation ratio being higher in boys compared to girls.
Conclusions
IGD is a significant predictor of depression in adolescents, with resilience and sleep distress serving as key mediators. Early identification and targeted interventions for IGD may help prevent depression. Intervention strategies should prioritize enhancing resilience and improving sleep quality, particularly among boys at risk.
Artificial intelligence (AI) has been recently applied to different mental health illnesses and healthcare domains. This systematic review presents the application of AI in mental health in the domains of diagnosis, monitoring, and intervention. A database search (CCTR, CINAHL, PsycINFO, PubMed, and Scopus) was conducted from inception to February 2024, and a total of 85 relevant studies were included according to preestablished inclusion criteria. The AI methods most frequently used were support vector machine and random forest for diagnosis, machine learning for monitoring, and AI chatbot for intervention. AI tools appeared to be accurate in detecting, classifying, and predicting the risk of mental health conditions as well as predicting treatment response and monitoring the ongoing prognosis of mental health disorders. Future directions should focus on developing more diverse and robust datasets and on enhancing the transparency and interpretability of AI models to improve clinical practice.
