Political professionals and scholars maintain that raising money early in the election season is critical to a successful campaign, having downstream consequences on a candidate’s future fundraising potential, the stiffness of competition she will face, and her likelihood of electoral victory. In spite of early money’s perceived importance, there is no common operationalization for money as “early.” Moreover, existing measures often fail to reflect definitional aspects of early money. In this paper, we first lay out a theoretical framework regarding the utility of early campaign fundraising for candidates. We argue that early fundraising can be expressed as two conceptually distinct quantities of interest centered on either a candidate’s own fundraising performance (candidate-centered) or her fundraising performance relative to her electoral competitors (election-centered). We next lay out steps for operationalizing candidate- and election-centered measures of early fundraising. Lastly, we demonstrate that both our proposed measures for early campaign fundraising are predictive of a candidate’s future fundraising and electoral success. By putting forward a set of best practices for early money measurement and, additionally, producing off-the-shelf measures for early fundraising in U.S. House elections, we fill an important gap in scholarly research on the measurement of money in politics.
The first compilations of Proterozoic eukaryote diversity, published in the 1980s showed a dramatic peak in the Tonian Period (1000–720 Ma), interpreted as the initial radiation of eukaryotes in the marine realm. Over the decades, new discoveries filled in the older part of the record and the peak diminished, but the idea of a Tonian radiation of eukaryotes has remained strong, and is now widely accepted as fact. We present a new diversity compilation based on 181 species and 713 species occurrences from 145 formations ranging in age from 1890 Ma to 720 Ma and find a significant increase in diversity in the Tonian. However, we also find that the number of eukaryotic species through time is highly correlated with the number of formations in our dataset (i.e. eukaryote-bearing formations) through time. This correlation is robust to interpretations of eukaryote affinity, bin size, and bin boundaries. We also find that within-assemblage diversity—a measure thought to circumvent sampling bias—is related to the number of eukaryote-bearing formations through time. Biomarkers show a similar pattern to body fossils, where the rise of eukaryotic biosignatures correlates with increased sampling. We find no evidence that the proportion of eukaryote-bearing versus all fossiliferous formations changed through the Proterozoic, as might be expected if the correlation reflected an increase in eukaryote diversity driving an increase in the number of eukaryote-bearing formations. Although the correlation could reflect a common cause such as changes in sea level driving both diversification and an increase in sedimentary rock volume, we favor the explanation that the pattern of early eukaryote diversity is driven by variations in paleontological sampling.
Metastructures composed of a closely spaced plate array have been widely used in bespoke manipulation of waves in contexts of acoustics, electromagnetics, elasticity and water waves. This paper focuses on wave scattering by discrete plate array metastructures of arbitrary cross-sections, including isolated vertical metacylinders, periodic arrays and horizontal surface-piercing metacylinders. A suitable transform-based method has been applied to each problem to reduce the influence of barriers in a two-dimensional problem to a set of points in a one-dimensional wave equation wherein the solution is constructed using a corresponding Green's function. A key difference from the existing work is the use of an exact description of the plate array rather than an effective medium approximation, enabling the exploration of wave frequencies above resonance where homogenisation models fail but where the most intriguing physical findings are unravelled. The new findings are particularly notable for graded plate array metastructures that produce a dense spectrum of resonant frequencies, leading to broadband ‘rainbow reflection’ effects. This study provides new ideas for the design of structures for the bespoke control of waves with the potential for innovative solutions to coastal protection schemes or wave energy converters.
Among the most widely distributed species globally, common reed [Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud.] has generated extensive interest in invasive plant science and management because its introduced strains are highly invasive and often form monocultures that alter ecosystem properties. In desert wetlands in Las Vegas, NV, USA, where management goals included reducing hazardous P. australis fuels and increasing native plant diversity, we assessed variation in P. australis cover, the degree of native plant colonization, and soil seedbanks after P. australis management treatments (cutting, glyphosate–imazapyr herbicide) and wildfires across gradients in soil properties. Based on change in P. australis cover during six measurement events over 24 mo, 24 study sites formed three groups: (1) decreasing cover, where initially high P. australis cover (60% to 85%) decreased to <5% following multiple cutting or herbicide treatments; (2) sustaining low cover, where wildfire or clearing was associated with initially low P. australis cover which remained low (<30%) after multiple herbicide applications; and (3) sustaining high cover (45% to 100% initially and remaining at 30% to 100%), including sites unmanaged or treated/burned only once. High soil salinity correlated with low postmanagement P. australis cover. No native plants were detected in the sustaining high P. australis cover group, despite natives occurring in the seedbank. Where management reduced P. australis cover, minimal native plant colonization did occur. Secondary invasion by other non-native plants was nearly absent. Our results suggest that if P. australis can be initially cleared, multiple herbicide applications can persistently keep cover low, especially on drier, saline soils. Slow native plant colonization suggests that a phased approach may be useful to initially reduce P. australis cover, keep it low via repeated treatments, and actively revegetate sites with native species tailored to the moisture–salinity gradient across P. australis–invaded habitats.
There is a growing interest in understanding the impact of duty hours and resting times on training outcomes and the well-being of resident physicians. Psychiatry resident’s duty hours in Spain comprise a regular working schedule of 37.5h per week and a minimum of 4 mandatory on-call shifts. The most recent duty hours regulations in Spain were transposed from the European Working Time Directive (EWTD). According to Spanish Law, doctors cannot work for more than 48h per week and need to have resting times per day (at least 12h), per week (at least 36h) as well as annual leave (at least a month). However, there is practically no data on this situation in psychiatry resident physicians.
Objectives
Our aim is firstly, to describe the number of shifts performed by psychiatry resident physicians in Spain. Secondly, to describe compliance with the daily and weekly rests compared to those set in national and European law. Finally, to analyse the difference by demographic variables (gender and year of residency), in both the number of on-call duty shifts and compliance with rests.
Methods
A descriptive cross-sectional study was designed through an online survey adapted from the existing literature. The target population were Spanish psychiatry resident physicians undergoing PGT who started their specialist training during the years 2018–2021. The survey was disseminated through the Spanish regional medical councils to all active psychiatry resident physicians by mail as well as through informal communication channels. The study was authorised by the Spanish Medical Organization’s General Assembly which is the highest ethical and deontological body of physicians in Spain.
Results
55 responses were obtained, of which 61.82% identified as females. The mean number of on-call shifts in the last 3 months was 14.05. This mean was highest in women 14,32 and in the cohort of 2020 15.46 (first year of residency). Among the resident physicians surveyed, 66.07% exceeded the 48h per week limit set by the EWTD and 7% of them did not rest after a 24-h on-call shift. Furthermore, 22% of respondents did not have a day-off after a Saturday on-call shift. The mean working hours when not resting after an on-call-shift were 7 hours. The comparison by gender and year of residency of the main variables can be seen in figures 1 and 2 respectively.

Conclusions
Psychiatry resident physicians in Spain greatly exceed the established 48 h/week EWTD limit. Likewise, non-compliance with labour regulations regarding mandatory rest after on-call duty and minimum weekly rest periods are observed. Differences can be seen by gender and year of residency. The situation described could potentially create a high-risk situation for the health and psychosocial well-being of resident physicians, hinder learning outcomes and could lead to suboptimal patient care.
Helium or neopentane can be used as surrogate gas fill for deuterium (D2) or deuterium-tritium (DT) in laser-plasma interaction studies. Surrogates are convenient to avoid flammability hazards or the integration of cryogenics in an experiment. To test the degree of equivalency between deuterium and helium, experiments were conducted in the Pecos target chamber at Sandia National Laboratories. Observables such as laser propagation and signatures of laser-plasma instabilities (LPI) were recorded for multiple laser and target configurations. It was found that some observables can differ significantly despite the apparent similarity of the gases with respect to molecular charge and weight. While a qualitative behaviour of the interaction may very well be studied by finding a suitable compromise of laser absorption, electron density, and LPI cross sections, a quantitative investigation of expected values for deuterium fills at high laser intensities is not likely to succeed with surrogate gases.
This paper presents and compares two different approaches to solving the problem of wave propagation across a large finite periodic array of surface-piercing vertical barriers. Both approaches are formulated in terms of a pair of integral equations, one exact and based on a spacing $\delta > 0$ between adjacent barriers and the other approximate and based on a continuum model formally developed by using homogenisation methods for small $\delta$. It is shown that the approximate method is simpler to evaluate than the exact method which requires eigenvalues and eigenmodes related to propagation in an equivalent infinite periodic array of barriers. In both methods, the numerical effort required to solve problems is independent of the size of the array. The comparison between the two methods allows us to draw important conclusions about the validity of homogenisation models of plate array metamaterial devices. The practical interest in this problem stems from the result that for an array of barriers there exists a critical value of radian frequency, $\omega _c$, dependent on $\delta$, below which waves propagate through the array and above which it results in wave decay. When $\delta \to 0$, the critical frequency is given by $\omega _c = \sqrt {g/d}$, where $d$ is the plate submergence and $g$ is the acceleration due to gravity, which relates to the resonance in narrow channels and is an example of local resonance, studied extensively in metamaterials. The results have implications for proposed schemes to harness energy from ocean waves and other problems related to rainbow trapping and rainbow reflection.
Clinical research staff play a critical role in recruiting families for pediatric research, but their views are not well described. We aimed to describe how pediatric research staff build trusting research relationships with patients and their families.
Methods:
We interviewed research staff at one pediatric research institution and its affiliated academic medical center between November 2020 and February 2021. Staff were eligible if they conducted participant recruitment, consent, and/or enrollment for clinical research. We developed our semi-structured interview guide based on a framework for trusting researcher-community partnerships.
Results:
We interviewed 28 research staff, with a median age of 28 years (range 22–50) and a median of 5 years of experience (range 1–29). Interviewees identified factors relevant to relationship building across three levels: the individual staff member, the relational interaction with the family, and the institutional or other structural backdrop. Individual factors included how staff developed recruitment skills, their perceived roles, and their personal motivations. Relational factors spanned four stages of recruitment: before the approach, forming an initial connection with a family, building the connection, and following up. Structural factors were related to access and diversity, clinical interactions, and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Conclusions:
Research staff discussed tensions and supports with various actors, challenges with the integration of research and clinical care, the importance of voluntariness for building trust, and multiple contributors to inequities in research. These findings reveal the importance of ensuring research staff have a voice in institutional policies and are supported to advocate for patients and families.
Despite its impressive evidence base, there is a widening access gap to receiving cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). Video conferencing therapy (VCT) offers an effective solution for logistical barriers to treatment, which has been salient throughout the Coronavirus pandemic. However, research concerning the delivery of CBT via VCT for children and young people (CYP) is in its infancy, and clinical outcome data are limited. The aim of this service evaluation was to explore the effectiveness of a VCT CBT intervention for CYP referred from Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) in the UK. A total of 989 records of CYP who had completed CBT via VCT in 2020 with Healios, a digital mental health company commissioned by the National Health Service (NHS), were examined to determine changes in anxiety, depression and progress towards personalised goals. Routine outcome measures (ROMs) were completed at baseline and endpoint, as well as session by session. Feedback was collected from CYP and their families at the end of treatment. There was a significant reduction in symptoms of anxiety and depression and significant progress towards goals, with pre- to post-effect sizes (Cohen’s d) demonstrating medium to large effects (d=.45 to d=−1.39). Reliable improvement ranged from 31 to 80%, clinical improvement ranged from 33 to 50%, and 25% clinically and reliably improved on at least one measure; 92% reported that they would recommend Healios. This service evaluation demonstrates that Healios’ CBT delivered via VCT is effective for CYP receiving it as part of routine mental health care.

American responses to refugee dilemmas in the decades following the Cold War in many ways mirrored the country’s broader and often ambivalent attempts to redefine itself as an enduring global hegemon over that period. During the Cold War, American refugee advocates within and outside of government had promoted refugee assistance as an important tool for advancing US influence internationally, part of the country’s “arsenal of peace” and “strategy of freedom” as one government official put it. Such initiatives purportedly heralded to global and American audiences alike the country’s commitment not only to such soft-power principles of international humanitarianism and an American way of life that welcomed immigrants into a prosperous land of freedom; they were additionally designed to signal America’s prudent, hard-nosed concern with promoting international stability and US national interests, especially in the struggle against communism. As Americans considered what role the United States should play in a post-Cold War world that President George H. W.
The theoretical limit for absorption of energy in monochromatic water waves of wavelength $\lambda$ by axisymmetric wave energy converters operating in rigid-body motion was established in the 1970s. The maximum mean power generated by a device absorbing due to heave motion is equivalent to that contained in $\lambda /2{\rm \pi}$ length of an incident wave crest. For devices absorbing through surge and/or pitch motions the so-called capture width doubles to $\lambda /{\rm \pi}$. For devices absorbing in both heave and surge/pitch the capture width increases further to $3\lambda /2{\rm \pi}$. In this paper it is demonstrated that it is theoretically possible to extend the capture width for axisymmetric wave energy converters without bound through the use of generalised (non-rigid-body) modes of motion. This concept is applied to vertical cylinders whose surface is surrounded by an array of narrow vertical absorbing paddles. A continuum approximation is made to the paddle motion which simplifies the problem and allows strategies to be developed for setting the springs and dampers that control the power absorption. Results demonstrate that a cylinder of fixed size can absorb as much power as demanded from a plane incident wave although the practical limitations of linear theory are rapidly breached as that demand increases unless the size of the cylinder increases in proportion. In this paper we do not explore these limits in detail or further practical design considerations, such as imposing motion constraints. The continuum approximation is tested against a discrete paddle simulation for accuracy.
Although placebo conditions are ubiquitous in survey experiments, little evidence guides common practices for their use and selection. How should scholars choose and construct placebos? First, we review the role of placebos in published survey experiments, finding that placebos are used inconsistently. Then, drawing on the medical literature, we clarify the role that placebos play in accounting for nonspecific effects (NSEs), or the effects of ancillary features of experiments. We argue that, in the absence of precise knowledge of NSEs that placebos are adjusting for, researchers should average over a corpus of many placebos. We demonstrate this agnostic approach to placebo construction through the use of GPT-2, a generative language model trained on a database of over 1 million internet news pages. Using GPT-2, we devise 5,000 distinct placebos and administer two experiments (N = 2,975). Our results illustrate how researchers can minimize their role in placebo selection through automated processes. We conclude by offering tools for incorporating computer-generated placebo text vignettes into survey experiments and developing recommendations for best practice.
To assess the relationship between food insecurity, sleep quality, and days with mental and physical health issues among college students.
Design:
An online survey was administered. Food insecurity was assessed using the ten-item Adult Food Security Survey Module. Sleep was measured using the nineteen-item Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Mental health and physical health were measured using three items from the Healthy Days Core Module. Multivariate logistic regression was conducted to assess the relationship between food insecurity, sleep quality, and days with poor mental and physical health.
Setting:
Twenty-two higher education institutions.
Participants:
College students (n 17 686) enrolled at one of twenty-two participating universities.
Results:
Compared with food-secure students, those classified as food insecure (43·4 %) had higher PSQI scores indicating poorer sleep quality (P < 0·0001) and reported more days with poor mental (P < 0·0001) and physical (P < 0·0001) health as well as days when mental and physical health prevented them from completing daily activities (P < 0·0001). Food-insecure students had higher adjusted odds of having poor sleep quality (adjusted OR (AOR): 1·13; 95 % CI 1·12, 1·14), days with poor physical health (AOR: 1·01; 95 % CI 1·01, 1·02), days with poor mental health (AOR: 1·03; 95 % CI 1·02, 1·03) and days when poor mental or physical health prevented them from completing daily activities (AOR: 1·03; 95 % CI 1·02, 1·04).
Conclusions:
College students report high food insecurity which is associated with poor mental and physical health, and sleep quality. Multi-level policy changes and campus wellness programmes are needed to prevent food insecurity and improve student health-related outcomes.
Tamarins and chimpanzees differ in many aspects of their behavior, biology, and evolutionary history; however, both primates are heavily dependent on a diet of ripe fruits during all months of the year (reviewed in Digby et al. 2011; Stumpf 2011). In addition, previous research on cognition in tamarins and chimpanzees indicates that individuals retain spatial information concerning the location of many feeding sites (e.g., Garber 2000; Janmaat et al. 2013a; Normand et al. 2009). Since primates show a high level of site fidelity (Janmaat et al. 2009) and commonly rely on sessile food sources that are revisited many times over a limited part of the year (such as termite nests and trees producing fruits, leaves, flowers, and/or exudates), one might expect foragers to reuse a limited set of travel routes, return to previously visited feeding sites, and search for new food patches in locations nearby current feeding sites.
