This article presents the first complete critical edition and annotated English translation of the nineteenth-century Javanese mystical poem Suluk Lonthang. Combining different disciplinary expertise in old and modern Javanese philology, Tantric Studies, and Islamic Studies, it interprets the protagonist of the poem as an expression of the multifaceted and multivocal Javanese religious landscape of the time, whose historical—and translocal—roots can be discerned in Sufi traditions from the Islamicate and Persianate worlds, as well as Tantric traditions from both pre-Islamic Java and the Indian subcontinent.
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND) prevalence is expected to increase in East Africa as treatment coverage increases, survival improves, and this population ages. This study aimed to better understand the current cognitive phenotype of this newly emergent population of older combination antiretroviral therapy (cART)-treated people living with HIV (PLWH), in which current screening measures lack accuracy. This will facilitate the refinement of HAND cognitive screening tools for this setting.
Method:
This is a secondary analysis of 253 PLWH aged ≥50 years receiving standard government HIV clinic follow-up in Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. They were evaluated with a detailed locally normed low-literacy neuropsychological battery annually on three occasions and a consensus panel diagnosis of HAND by Frascati criteria based on clinical evaluation and collateral history.
Results:
Tests of verbal learning and memory, categorical verbal fluency, visual memory, and visuoconstruction had an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve >0.7 for symptomatic HAND (s-HAND) (0.70–0.72; p < 0.001 for all tests). Tests of visual memory, verbal learning with delayed recall and recognition memory, psychomotor speed, language comprehension, and categorical verbal fluency were independently associated with s-HAND in a logistic mixed effects model (p < 0.01 for all). Neuropsychological impairments varied by educational background.
Conclusions:
A broad range of cognitive domains are affected in older, well-controlled, East African PLWH, including those not captured in widely used screening measures. It is possible that educational background affects the observed cognitive impairments in this setting. Future screening measures for similar populations should consider assessment of visual memory, verbal learning, language comprehension, and executive and motor function.
The passage of single air bubbles through the horizontal interface between viscoplastic and Newtonian fluids, considering various combinations of densities and viscosities for the fluid layers, is studied computationally. The primary focus is on the quantity of liquid transferred from the lower layer (viscoplastic fluid) to the upper layer (Newtonian fluid) as a result of the bubble's ascent, a factor with significant implications for the turbidity of methane-emitting lakes and water bodies. The entrainment characteristics are observed to vary considerably with the bubble shape, within the lower layer and as the bubble approaches the interface. The results show that at Bond number $(Bo)>1$ and moderate Archimedes ($Ar$), prolate-shaped bubbles crossing the interface undergo elongation in the direction of their poles. This elongation is further accentuated when the viscosity of upper layer is less than the plastic viscosity of the lower layer. The bubble is found to break up when leaving the lower layer, of a critical capillary number, $Ca_c \approx 5$. The results show a significant reduction in the volume of entrainment compared with the Newtonian counterpart. This suggests disturbances caused by the rising bubble at the interface dissipate over a smaller region. Four distinct entrainment regimes are identified, mainly indicating the height to which the entrained fluid can be transported away from the interface. In contrast to Newtonian fluids, the volume of entrainment increases by decreasing the viscosity of the upper layer. Interestingly, the heavy viscoplastic fluid that has been dragged up into the light Newtonian fluid does not recede with time.
The crystal structure of alectinib hydrochloride has been solved and refined using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data and optimized using density functional theory techniques. Alectinib hydrochloride crystallizes in space group P21/n (#14) with the following parameters: a = 12.67477(7), b = 10.44076(5), c = 20.38501(12) Å, β = 93.1438(7)°, V = 2693.574(18) Å3, and Z = 4 at 295 K. The crystal structure consists of stacks of molecules along the b-axis, and the stacks contain chains of strong N–H⋯Cl hydrogen bonds. One density functional theory calculation moved a proton from an N atom to the Cl, but another calculation yielded a more chemically reasonable result. The powder pattern has been submitted to ICDD for inclusion in the Powder Diffraction File™ (PDF®)
Although true coral reefs have seldom been reported from the fossil record of the Cabo Verde Archipelago, many single fossil corals and coral colonies can be found reworked in tsunami deposits and in raised marine terraces onshore on these islands. This study provides the first detailed survey of fossil corals from 7 of the 10 islands of the archipelago, sampled from Pleistocene marine terraces and tsunami deposits. A total of 168 scleractinian corals were analyzed and identified to genus and/or species level. Thirteen taxa from the families Acroporidae, Dendrophylliidae, Faviidae, Pocilloporidae, Poritidae, and Rhizangiidae were identified. The zooxanthellate fossil corals found on the Cape Verde Archipelago likely migrated from the Caribbean to the West African coast, while azooxanthellate species likely originated from the Indo-Pacific. Differences between present-day coral assemblages and fossil assemblages are assumed to result from changing environmental factors. Although reef-building taxa occur (e.g., Porites), extensive reef frameworks are absent.
Comics can be ordered in a range of ways, most overtly by issue number for works within a series, and by page number for pages within works. The internal elements of a comic can also be ordered by formal details found within pages. We identify four kinds of formal details specific to comics pages or two-page spreads: how their elements are arranged, how they are viewed, what events they represent, and when information about those events is presented.
The study aimed to examine the interrelationships between growth mindset, L2 aptitude, L2 grit, and L2 achievement, while also exploring the moderating role of gender in these interactions. A sample of 236 English-major students participated in the study by completing a language aptitude test and a questionnaire. The results of path analyses indicated that both aptitude and L2 grit similarly and positively predicted L2 achievement. The growth mindset had no direct effect on L2 achievement, whereas its indirect effects reached statistical significance. Moreover, growth mindset and L2 grit were found to be unrelated to L2 aptitude. Although female and male students did not differ significantly in their growth mindset, L2 aptitude, L2 grit, and L2 achievement scores, Multi-Group Path Analyses unveiled subtle gender differences.
A monoclinic C form of rilpivirine hydrochloride, (N6H19C22)Cl, has been obtained and characterized using solid-state 15N, 13C, and 35Cl NMR spectroscopy and multitemperature synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction. The title compound crystallizes in the monoclinic system (space group C2/c, #15) at both room (295.0(2) K) and low (100.0(2) K) temperatures. At room temperature, the following parameters are a = 19.43051(3), b = 13.09431(14), c = 17.10254(18) Å, β = 109.3937(7), V = 4104.48(9) Å3, and Z = 8. The folded molecular conformation of the cation is similar with that of free base rilpivirine with the exception of cyanovinyl group disposition. The anion links cations to infinite chains parallel to the crystallographic c axis using N–H⋯Cl bonds where both amino groups and the protonated pyrimidine ring take part in the H-bonding. The powder patterns have been submitted to the ICDD for inclusion in the Powder Diffraction File™ (PDF®).
New experiments in highly turbulent, steady, subcritical and uniform water open-channel flows have been carried out to measure the mean turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) budget of sediment-laden boundary layer flows with two sizes (dp = 3 mm and 1 mm) of Plexiglas particles $({\rm relative\ density}\ = 1.192)$. The experiments covered energetic sediment transport conditions (Shields number of $0.35 < \theta < 1.2$) ranging from non-capacity to full-capacity flows in bedload-to-suspension-dominated transport modes (suspension number of $0.5 < {w_s}/{u_\ast } < 1.3$ where ${w_s}$ is the settling velocity and $u_*$ is the friction velocity) and for weakly to highly inertial, finite size turbulence-particle conditions (Stokes number of 0.1 < St < 3.5 and dp/η > 10 where $\eta$ is the Kolmogorov length scale). It was shown that the effects of sediments on the TKE budget are very pronounced in all large particle experiments for which a bedload layer of several grain diameter thickness is developed above the channel bed. When compared with the corresponding reference clear-water flows, the TKE shear-production rate for the 3 mm particle flows is strongly reduced in the wall region corresponding to the bedload layer. This turbulence damping is seen to increase with sediment load until full capacity for flows with constant Shields value, as well as with Shields number value. Inside this damped TKE shear-production zone, a distinct peak of maximal turbulence production appears to coincide with the upper edge of the bedload layer delimited by a sharp gradient in mean sediment concentration. This vertically upshifted peak of TKE production is accompanied by an enhanced net downward oriented TKE flux when compared with the reference clear-water flows. The downward diffused TKE is found to act in the bedload layer as a local energy source in reasonable balance with the sediment transport term. The mechanism behind this downward TKE transport was further analysed on the basis of coherent flow structure dynamics controlled by ejection- and sweep-type events. The agreement between the height of downward directed mean TKE flux and the height below which sweep-type events dominate the Reynolds shear-stress contribution over ejections, revealed the leading role played by sweeps in mean TKE transport. This agreement holds for all reference clear-water flows supporting the well-known wall-roughness-induced dominance of the sweep contribution in turbulent, rough clear-water boundary layer flows. Furthermore, for all 3 mm particle flows, the two referred to transition levels were significantly and similarly upshifted to the upper edge of the bedload layer. Only for these sediment-laden flows, the bedload layer thickness is seen to exceed the wall-roughness sublayer of the reference clear-water flows. This supports a strong analogy between wall-roughness effects in clear-water flows and bedload layer effects in sediment-laden flows, on the mean TKE budget induced by a similarly modified coherent flow structure dynamics. The bedload layer-controlled wall roughness is finally confirmed by the good prediction of the wall-roughness parameter ks of the logarithmic velocity distribution. An empirical formulation fitting the presented measurements is presented, valid over the range of Shields number values covered herein.
Australia has just rescheduled two drugs controlled under the United Nations Psychotropic Drug Conventions, psilocybin and MDMA, as treatments for treatment-resistant depression and post-traumatic stress disorder respectively. This feature explores the reasons for these developments, the opportunities and challenges they provide to psychiatry communities and how along with health systems these communities might respond to these developments.
Let M be a Puiseux monoid, that is, a monoid consisting of nonnegative rationals (under standard addition). In this paper, we study factorisations in atomic Puiseux monoids through the lens of their associated Betti graphs. The Betti graph of $b \in M$ is the graph whose vertices are the factorisations of b with edges between factorisations that share at least one atom. If the Betti graph associated to b is disconnected, then we call b a Betti element of M. We explicitly compute the set of Betti elements for a large class of Puiseux monoids (the atomisations of certain infinite sequences of rationals). The process of atomisation is quite useful in studying the arithmetic of Puiseux monoids, and it has been actively considered in recent literature. This leads to an argument that for every positive integer n, there exists an atomic Puiseux monoid with exactly n Betti elements.

This study examined the role of discourse organization in second language (L2) comprehensibility ratings. Twelve English for Academic Purposes teachers listened to 60 L2 speech samples elicited through a TOEFL–type integrated speaking task, evaluating each sample for comprehensibility and coherence (perceived interconnectedness of ideas). The samples were analyzed for the occurrence of discourse features at micro and macro levels. Results revealed a strong association between coherence and comprehensibility (r = .70). Whereas L2 speakers’ use of additive connectives (e.g., and) uniquely predicted comprehensibility, ordering of ideas and source–speech similarity in speakers’ performances predicted coherence. Lexical overlaps predicted both constructs. Findings underscore the importance of coherence to comprehensible academic L2 speech demonstrating that the two constructs include partially overlapping yet distinct characteristics.
We derive a global higher regularity result for weak solutions of the linear relaxed micromorphic model on smooth domains. The governing equations consist of a linear elliptic system of partial differential equations that is coupled with a system of Maxwell-type. The result is obtained by combining a Helmholtz decomposition argument with regularity results for linear elliptic systems and the classical embedding of $H(\operatorname {div};\Omega )\cap H_0(\operatorname {curl};\Omega )$ into $H^1(\Omega )$.
PTEN hamartoma tumour syndrome (PHTS) comprises a group of genetic disorders with varied clinical presentations, including macrocephaly, developmental delay, and increased cancer susceptibility. Recent reports have highlighted the occurrence of tonsil-related issues in PHTS.
Methods
Clinical data focusing on tonsil-related pathology and tonsillectomy details (indications, histology and post-operative complications) were collected from 53 patients with PHTS.
Results
Tonsil issues affected 58 per cent of the cohort, with 43 per cent requiring tonsillectomy. Primary indications for tonsillectomy included obstructive sleep apnoea (43 per cent), recurrent tonsillitis (17 per cent) and other causes (17 per cent). Tonsil-related problems were observed both before (45 per cent) and after (55 per cent) PHTS. Tonsillectomy with adenoidectomy was the predominant surgical intervention performed (87 per cent), spanning a broad age range (1–27 years old).
Discussion
Our findings highlight the complex nature of PHTS and its association with tonsil-related pathology, demonstrating its relevance for ENT surgeons. Early recognition and intervention are pivotal for managing sleep apnoea and the associated health problems.
When restricted to alternating links, both Heegaard Floer and Khovanov homology concentrate along a single diagonal $\delta$-grading. This leads to the broader class of thin links that one would like to characterize without reference to the invariant in question. We provide a relative version of thinness for tangles and use this to characterize thinness via tangle decompositions along Conway spheres. These results bear a strong resemblance to the L-space gluing theorem for three-manifolds with torus boundary. Our results are based on certain immersed curve invariants for Conway tangles, namely the Heegaard Floer invariant $\operatorname {HFT}$ and the Khovanov invariant $\widetilde {\operatorname {Kh}}$ that were developed by the authors in previous works.
