Teaching is a highly complex act, and learning to teach in an educational era that combines both teacher-centred and student-centred approaches presents additional challenges. Conducting demonstration lessons (DL) is one of the methods aimed at enhancing teachers’ instructional skills. This study examines the features and functions of this unique type of lesson from the perspective of music demonstration teachers in Guangdong, China. Through observation and interviews, the findings not only reveal the prevalence of DLs as performance-based lessons in Chinese teachers’ professional lives but also explore their distinctions from regular school teaching and their potential for improving teachers’ pedagogical abilities. Concerns and issues related to this type of lesson, along with possible solutions, are also discussed to provide recommendations for incorporating DLs into teacher training programmes in higher education institutions.
Individuals who serve in the military substitute work experience for post-secondary educational attainment after high school, leading to large educational attainment gaps between new veterans and observably similar nonveterans. Little is known about the evolution of these gaps by age and across cohorts. We investigate the life-cycle attainment of veterans relative to nonveterans using a synthetic panel data approach. Following five multiyear birth cohorts we find that, on average, veterans close a 20-percentage point gap in attainment of a bachelor's or greater over time and significantly outpace observably similar nonveterans in attainment of an associate's degree. Female and minority veterans exceeded the attainment of similar nonveterans over time, and more recent birth cohorts began with larger gaps but closed them at younger ages due to increasing levels of both enrollment and enrollment intensity. Our findings highlight the important role of military service in facilitating social mobility through educational attainment.
Calorie restriction plays a role in reducing food intake and weight gain, and improving health and lifespan. We hypothesized that calorie restriction would affect body weight (BW), serum indices, gut microbiota, metabolites and short-chain fatty acids of finishing pigs. Castrated male (Landrace × Yorkshire) pigs (86.13 ± 3.50 kg) were randomly assigned into two groups indicated as control (Con) and calorie restriction (CR) (eight pigs/group), respectively. Pigs in the Con group consumed feed ad libitum, whereas pigs in the CR group were fed 70% of the amount of feed in the Con group. The trial lasted for 38 days. Blood and colonic contents were collected for serum parameters, and microbiota and metabolome analysis, respectively. Main effects were tested by Student’s t-test. We found that for finishing pigs, calorie restriction reduced the cumulative food intake, BW gain, serum total cholesterol, triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase levels. Calorie restriction did not change the α and β diversity of intestinal microbiota. However, calorie restriction significantly increased the abundance of Romboutsia and unclassified_c_Bacilli, and significantly reduced the abundance of Lachnospiraceae_XPB1014_group, Candidatus_Saccharimonas, Escherichia-–Shigella and Gastranaerophilales. Calorie restriction also simultaneously changed the structure of intestinal metabolites and increased the concentration of isobutyric acid, isovaleric acid and valeric acid. In conclusion, calorie restriction may affect metabolism, reduce obesity and improve intestinal microbiota, which may be a healthy diet treatment that can reduce obesity and improve metabolism.
We study the community detection problem on a Gaussian mixture model, in which vertices are divided into $k\geq 2$ distinct communities. The major difference in our model is that the intensities for Gaussian perturbations are different for different entries in the observation matrix, and we do not assume that every community has the same number of vertices. We explicitly find the necessary and sufficient conditions for the exact recovery of the maximum likelihood estimation, which can give a sharp phase transition for the exact recovery even though the Gaussian perturbations are not identically distributed; see Section 7. Applications include the community detection on hypergraphs.
Professor William Ivory (Ivor) Browne, consultant psychiatrist, who died on 24 January 2024, was a remarkable figure in the history of medicine in Ireland and had substantial influence on psychiatric practice and Irish society. Born in Dublin in 1929, Browne trained in England, Ireland, and the US. He was chief psychiatrist at St Brendan’s Hospital, Grangegorman, Dublin from 1965 to 1994 and professor of psychiatry at University College Dublin from 1967 to 1994. Browne pioneered novel and, at times, unorthodox treatments at St Brendan’s. Along with Dr Dermot Walsh, he led the dismantling of the old institution and the development of community mental health services during the 1970s and 1980s. He established the Irish Foundation for Human Development (1968–1979) and, in 1983, was appointed chairman of the group of European experts set up by the European Economic Community for reform of Greek psychiatry. After retirement in 1994, Browne practiced psychotherapy and pursued interests in stress management, living system theory, and how the brain processes trauma. For a doctor with senior positions in healthcare and academia, Browne was remarkably iconoclastic, unorthodox, and unafraid. Browne leaves many legacies. Most of all, Browne is strongly associated with the end of the era of the large ‘mental hospital’ at Grangegorman, a gargantuan task which he and others worked hard to achieve. This is his most profound legacy and, perhaps, the least tangible: the additional liberty enjoyed by thousands of people who avoided institutionalisation as a result of reforms which Browne came to represent.
Early life stress (ELS) and a Western diet (WD) promote mood and cardiovascular disorders, however, how these risks interact in disease pathogenesis is unclear. We assessed effects of ELS with or without a subsequent WD on behaviour, cardiometabolic risk factors, and cardiac function/ischaemic tolerance in male mice. Fifty-six new-born male C57BL/6J mice were randomly allocated to a control group (CON) undisturbed before weaning, or to maternal separation (3h/day) and early (postnatal day 17) weaning (MSEW). Mice consumed standard rodent chow (CON, n = 14; MSEW, n = 15) or WD chow (WD, n = 19; MSEW + WD, n = 19) from week 8 to 24. Fasted blood was sampled and open field test and elevated plus maze (EPM) tests undertaken at 7, 15, and 23 weeks of age, with hearts excised at 24 weeks for Langendorff perfusion (evaluating pre- and post-ischaemic function). MSEW alone transiently increased open field activity at 7 weeks; body weight and serum triglycerides at 4 and 7 weeks, respectively; and final blood glucose levels and insulin resistance at 23 weeks. WD increased insulin resistance and body weight gain, the latter potentiated by MSEW. MSEW + WD was anxiogenic, reducing EPM open arm activity vs. WD alone. Although MSEW had modest metabolic effects and did not influence cardiac function or ischaemic tolerance in lean mice, it exacerbated weight gain and anxiogenesis, and improved ischaemic tolerance in WD fed animals. MSEW-induced increases in body weight (obesity) in WD fed animals in the absence of changes in insulin resistance may have protected the hearts of these mice.
Widespread research over four decades has shown that musicians suffer physical and psychological injuries that can begin during childhood and early adulthood. A survey of 268 Australian tertiary music students revealed their perceptions of the importance of health education as part of their education. While students rated health knowledge as highly important, they considered its inclusion in their education to be less significant. Thirty-six percent reported current physical pain or injury, and 41% reported current psychological health issues. Significant correlations emerged between students’ reported injury history and prioritisation of health education and particular health topics. This has implications for tertiary music education providers regarding policies for the integration of health education into the curriculum.
Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) are millisecond dispersed radio pulses of predominately extra-galactic origin. Although originally discovered at GHz frequencies, most FRBs have been detected between 400 and 800 MHz. Nevertheless, only a handful of FRBs were detected at radio frequencies $\le$400 MHz. Searching for FRBs at low frequencies is computationally challenging due to increased dispersive delay that must be accounted for. Nevertheless, the wide field of view (FoV) of low-frequency telescopes – such as the the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA), and prototype stations of the low-frequency Square Kilometre Array (SKA-Low) – makes them promising instruments to open a low-frequency window on FRB event rates, and constrain FRB emission models. The standard approach, inherited from high-frequencies, is to form multiple tied-array beams to tessellate the entire FoV and perform the search on the resulting time series. This approach, however, may not be optimal for low-frequency interferometers due to their large FoVs and high spatial resolutions leading to a large number of beams. Consequently, there are regions of parameter space in terms of number of antennas and resolution elements (pixels) where interferometric imaging is computationally more efficient. Here we present a new high-time resolution imager BLINK implemented on modern graphical processing units (GPUs) and intended for radio astronomy data. The main goal for this imager is to become part of a fully GPU-accelerated FRB search pipeline. We describe the imager and present its verification on real and simulated data processed to form all-sky and widefield images from the MWA and prototype SKA-Low stations. We also present and compare benchmarks of the GPU and CPU code executed on laptops, desktop computers, and Australian supercomputers. The code is publicly available at https://github.com/PaCER-BLINK-Project/imager and can be applied to data from any radio telescope.
The stimulation of instability and transport in the bottom boundary layer by internal solitary waves has been documented for over twenty years. However, the challenge of shallow slopes and a disparity of scales between the large-scale wave and the small-scale boundary layer has proven challenging for simulations. We present laboratory scale simulations that resolve the three-dimensionalisation in the boundary layer during the entire shoaling process. We find that the late stage, in which the incoming wave fissions into boluses, provides the most consistent source of three-dimensionalisation. In the early stage of shoaling, three-dimensionalisation occurs not so much due to separation bubble instability, but due to the interaction of vortices shed from the separation bubble with the overlying pycnocline. This interaction overturns the pycnocline, and creates bursts in kinetic energy and viscous dissipation, suggesting that the shed vortices induce turbulent motion and sediment resuspension in the water column above and behind the separation bubble.
A surge of pediatric respiratory illnesses beset the United States in late 2022 and early 2023. This study evaluated within-surge hospital acute and critical care resource availability and utilization. The study aimed to determine pediatric hospital acute and critical care resource use during a respiratory illness surge.
Methods
Between January and February 2023, an online survey was sent to the sections of hospital medicine and critical care of the American Academy of Pediatrics, community discussion forums of the Children’s Hospital Association, and PedSCCM—a pediatric critical care website. Data were summarized with median values and interquartile range.
Results
Across 35 hospitals with pediatric intensive care units (PICU), increase in critical care resource use was significant. In the month preceding the survey, 26 (74%) hospitals diverted patients away from their emergency department (ED) to other hospitals, with 46% diverting 1-5 patients, 23% diverting 6-10 patients, and 31% diverting more than 10 patients. One in 5 hospitals reported moving patients on mechanical ventilation from the PICU to other settings, including the ED (n = 2), intermediate care unit (n = 2), cardiac ICU (n = 1), ward converted to an ICU (n = 1), and a ward (n = 1). Utilization of human critical care resources was high, with PICU faculty, nurses, and respiratory therapists working at 100% capacity.
Conclusions
The respiratory illness surge triggered significant hospital resource use and diversion of patients away from hospitals. Pediatric public health emergency-preparedness should innovate around resource capacity.
Mass Casualty Incidents (MCIs) involving high-speed passenger ferries (HSPFs) may result in the dual-wave phenomenon, in which the emergency department (ED) is overwhelmed by an initial wave of minor injuries, followed by a second wave of more seriously injured victims. This study aimed to characterize the time pattern of ED presentation of victims in such accidents in Hong Kong.
Methods
All HSPF MCIs from 2005 to 2015 were reviewed retrospectively, with the time interval from accident to ED registration determined for each victim. Multivariable linear regression was used to identify independent factors associated with the time of ED presentation after the accidents.
Results
Eight MCIs involving 492 victims were identified. Victims with an Injury Severity Score (ISS) ≥ 9 had a significantly shorter median time interval compared to those with minor injuries. An ISS ≥ 9 and evacuation by emergency service vessels were associated with a shorter delay in ED arrival, whereas ship sinking, accident at nighttime, and a longer linear distance between the accident and receiving ED were associated with a longer delay.
Conclusion
The dual-wave phenomenon was not present in HSPF MCIs. Early communication is the key to ensure early resource mobilisation and a well-timed response.
We address the problem of optimal transport with a quadratic cost functional and a constraint on the flux through a constriction along the path. The constriction, conceptually represented by a toll station, limits the flow rate across. We provide a precise formulation which, in addition, is amenable to generalization in higher dimensions. We work out in detail the case of transport in one dimension by proving existence and uniqueness of solution. Under suitable regularity assumptions, we give an explicit construction of the transport plan. Generalization of flux constraints to higher dimensions and possible extensions of the theory are discussed.
Complex food retail settings, where multiple food retail outlets operate in close proximity are common. Despite their ubiquity, there remains a significant knowledge gap regarding healthy food retail interventions implemented within these settings. Furthermore, understanding the factors affecting the implementation of interventions in these settings remains limited. This systematic review aimed to (1) identify and describe complex food retail settings where interventions were implemented to promote the healthiness of foods purchased, (2) synthesise the evidence on the effectiveness of the interventions implemented, and (3) identify enablers and barriers to the implementation of the interventions in these settings. Four databases, namely, MEDLINE Complete, Global Health, Embase, and Business Source Complete, were searched until December 2022. The Effective Public Health Practice Project quality assessment tool was used. Six studies reported on the implementation of interventions promoting healthy food purchases across multiple food retail outlets. Three studies each described two complex food retail settings: university and hospital. Interventions including promotion and promotion plus price improved the healthiness of foods purchased. There was limited description of institutional food policies, conceptual frameworks, formative research, or evaluation outcomes to inform the implementation of interventions in these settings. No study analysed enablers and barriers to the implementation of interventions. No study identified their settings as complex food retail settings. There is limited evidence describing complex food retail settings, their impact on intervention effectiveness, and associated enablers or barriers. Investigating factors influencing the effectiveness of interventions implemented within complex food retail settings is critical to support their implementation at scale.
On October 7, 2023, somewhere around 1,500-3,000 terrorists invaded southern Israel killing 1,200 people, injuring 1,455, and taking 239 as hostages resulting in the largest mass-casualty event (MCE) in the country’s history. Most of the victims were civilians who suffered from complex injuries including high-velocity gunshot wounds, blast injuries from rocket-propelled grenades, and burns. Many would later require complex surgeries by all disciplines including general surgeons, vascular surgeons, orthopedists, neurosurgeons, cardiothoracic surgeons, otolaryngologists, oral maxillofacial surgeons, and plastic surgeons. Magen David Adom (MDA) is Israel’s National Emergency Prehospital Medical Organization and a member of the International Red Cross. While there are also private and non-profit ambulance services in Israel, the Ministry of Health has mandated MDA with the charge of managing an MCE. For this event, MDA incorporated a five-part strategy in this mega MCE: (1) extricating victims from areas under fire by bulletproof ambulances, (2) establishing casualty treatment stations in safe areas, (3) ambulance transport from the casualty treatment stations to hospitals, (4) ambulance transport of casualties from safe areas to hospitals, and (5) helicopter transport of victims to hospitals. This is the first time that MDA has responded to a mega MCE of this magnitude and lessons are continually being learned.
Scholars have rightly identified the roles of literal/historical interpretation and noetic/spiritual interpretation in Cyril of Alexandria's exegesis of Scripture. This article argues that narrative contributes to both methods by using events in the past to explain Scripture's meaning. He applies concepts established historically by Exodus’ recount of the Israelites’ presence in Egypt to his interpretation of the prophetic books. On the one hand, his literal interpretation draws from the Israelites’ return to idolatry, detailed in Exodus xxxii. On the other hand, his noetic interpretation relates the Egyptians’ oppression of the Israelites detailed in Exodus i to humanity's limitations under the devil.
Clustering is a method of allocating data points in various groups, known as clusters, based on similarity. The notion of expressing similarity mathematically and then maximizing it (minimize dissimilarity) can be formulated as an optimization problem. Spectral clustering is an example of such an approach to clustering, and it has been successfully applied to visualization of clustering and mapping of points into clusters in two and three dimensions. Higher dimension problems remained untouched due to complexity and, most importantly, lack of understanding what “similarity” means in higher dimensions. In this paper, we apply spectral clustering to long timeseries EEG (electroencephalogram) data. We developed several models, based on different similarity functions and different approaches for spectral clustering itself. The results of the numerical experiment demonstrate that the created models are accurate and can be used for timeseries classification.
The rationale behind state support for, and obedience to, normative rules and obligations has long been a topic of international law scholarship discourse. What has yet to be fully established, however, is why virtually all states have agreed to adhere to a seemingly novel global paradigm with ambitious yet non-binding objectives – the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This article identifies six factors as contributing to the influencing power of the SDGs – namely, the role of law, particularly inter- and transnational law, the legitimacy of the framework, the notion of reciprocity, reputational concerns, national self-interest, and the moral duty to address the shared global challenges of sustainable development.
By exploring their strengths and limitations through several theoretical frameworks (including Harold Koh's theory of transnational legal processes, Thomas Franck's theory of legitimacy, and Ryan Goodman and Derek Jinks’ three mechanisms of social influence), this article argues that the combination of these factors motivates voluntary state commitment, reporting, and cooperation under the SDG framework and that, overall, the SDGs offer a versatile lens to explore the different motives for state adherence to a soft law framework in the inter- and transnational legal spheres.
