In this article, we explore the bifurcation problem of limit cycles near the double eight figure loop (compound cycle with a 2-polycycle connecting two homoclinic loops). A general theory is established to find the lower bound of the maximal number of limit cycles (isolated periodic orbits) near the double eight figure loop. The Liénard system, a well-known nonlinear dynamical model, appears in a natural way in physics, chemistry, engineering, and so on, where periodic phenomena play a relevant role. As an application, we investigate an $(n+1)$th-order generalized Liénard system and prove the system has at least $7[\frac{n}{6}]+2[\frac{r}{2}]-[\frac{r}{4}]$ limit cycles near the double eight figure loop for any $n\geq5$ and $r=\rm mod(n,6)$, and their distribution is also gained.

We study the dynamics of dissipative billiard maps within planar convex domains. Such maps have a global attractor. We are interested in the topological and dynamical complexity of the attractor, in terms both of the geometry of the billiard table and of the strength of the dissipation. We focus on the study of an invariant subset of the attractor, the so-called Birkhoff attractor. On the one hand, we show that for a generic convex table with ‘pinched’ curvature, the Birkhoff attractor is a normally contracted manifold when the dissipation is strong. On the other hand, for a mild dissipation, we prove that, generically, the Birkhoff attractor is complicated, both from the topological and the dynamical points of view.

We show that the mode-locking region of the family of quasi-periodically forced Arnold circle maps with a topologically generic forcing function is dense. This gives a rigorous verification of certain numerical observations in [M. Ding, C. Grebogi and E. Ott. Evolution of attractors in quasiperiodically forced systems: from quasiperiodic to strange nonchaotic to chaotic. Phys. Rev. A 39(5) (1989), 2593–2598] for such forcing functions. More generally, under some general conditions on the base map, we show the density of the mode-locking property among dynamically forced maps (defined in [Z. Zhang. On topological genericity of the mode-locking phenomenon. Math. Ann. 376 (2020), 707–72]) equipped with a topology that is much stronger than the $C^0$ topology, compatible with smooth fiber maps. For quasi-periodic base maps, our result generalizes the main results in [A. Avila, J. Bochi and D. Damanik. Cantor spectrum for Schrödinger operators with potentials arising from generalized skew-shifts. Duke Math. J. 146 (2009), 253–280], [J. Wang, Q. Zhou and T. Jäger. Genericity of mode-locking for quasiperiodically forced circle maps. Adv. Math. 348 (2019), 353–377] and Zhang (2020).

We analyse the asymptotic dynamics of quasilinear parabolic equations when solutions may grow up (i.e. blow up in infinite time). For such models, there is a global attractor which is unbounded and the semiflow induces a nonlinear dynamics at infinity by means of a Poincaré projection. In case the dynamics at infinity is given by a semilinear equation, then it is gradient, consisting of the so-called equilibria at infinity and their corresponding heteroclinics. Moreover, the diffusion and reaction compete for the dimensionality of the induced dynamics at infinity. If the equilibria are hyperbolic, we explicitly prove the occurrence of heteroclinics between bounded equilibria and/or equilibria at infinity. These unbounded global attractors describe the space of admissible initial data at event horizons of certain black holes.

We present a modified version of the well-known geometric Lorenz attractor. It consists of a $C^1$ open set ${\mathcal O}$ of vector fields in ${\mathbb R}^3$ having an attracting region ${\mathcal U}$ satisfying three properties. Namely, a unique singularity $\sigma $; a unique attractor $\Lambda $ including the singular point and the maximal invariant in ${\mathcal U}$ has at most two chain recurrence classes, which are $\Lambda $ and (at most) one hyperbolic horseshoe. The horseshoe and the singular attractor have a collision along with the union of $2$ codimension $1$ submanifolds which split ${\mathcal O}$ into three regions. By crossing this collision locus, the attractor and the horseshoe may merge into a two-sided Lorenz attractor, or they may exchange their nature: the Lorenz attractor expels the singular point $\sigma $ and becomes a horseshoe, and the horseshoe absorbs $\sigma $ becoming a Lorenz attractor.

We prove that every topologically stable homeomorphism with global attractor of $\mathbb {R}^n$ is topologically stable on its global attractor. The converse is not true. On the other hand, if a homeomorphism with global attractor of a locally compact metric space is expansive and has the shadowing property, then it is topologically stable. This extends the Walters stability theorem (Walters, On the pseudo-orbit tracing property and its relationship to stability. The structure of attractors in dynamical systems, 1978, pp. 231–244).

We give a $C^1$-perturbation technique for ejecting an a priori given finite set of periodic points preserving a given finite set of homo/heteroclinic intersections from a chain recurrence class of a periodic point. The technique is first stated under a simpler setting called a Markov iterated function system, a two-dimensional iterated function system in which the compositions are chosen in a Markovian way. Then we apply the result to the setting of three-dimensional partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms.

For a perturbed generalized Korteweg–de Vries equation with a distributed delay, we prove the existence of both periodic and solitary waves by using the geometric singular perturbation theory and the Melnikov method. We further obtain monotonicity and boundedness of the speed of the periodic wave with respect to the total energy of the unperturbed system. Finally, we establish a relation between the wave speed and the wavelength.

Stability is among the most important concepts in dynamical systems. Local stability is well-studied, whereas determining the ‘global stability’ of a nonlinear system is very challenging. Over the last few decades, many different ideas have been developed to address this issue, primarily driven by concrete applications. In particular, several disciplines suggested a web of concepts under the headline ‘resilience’. Unfortunately, there are many different variants and explanations of resilience, and often, the definitions are left relatively vague, sometimes even deliberately. Yet, to allow for a structural development of a mathematical theory of resilience that can be used across different areas, one has to ensure precise starting definitions and provide a mathematical comparison of different resilience measures. In this work, we provide a systematic review of the most relevant indicators of resilience in the context of continuous dynamical systems, grouped according to their mathematical features. The indicators are also generalised to be applicable to any attractor. These steps are important to ensure a more reliable, quantitatively comparable and reproducible study of resilience in dynamical systems. Furthermore, we also develop a new concept of resilience against certain nonautonomous perturbations to demonstrate how one can naturally extend our framework. All the indicators are finally compared via the analysis of a classic scalar model from population dynamics to show that direct quantitative application-based comparisons are an immediate consequence of a detailed mathematical analysis.

In this paper, we study the quadratic perturbations of a one-parameter family of reversible quadratic systems whose first integral contains the logarithmic function. By the criterion function for determining the lowest upper bound of the number of zeros of Abelian integrals, we obtain that the cyclicity of either period annulus is two. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first result for the cyclicity of period annulus of the one-parameter family of reversible quadratic systems whose first integral contains the logarithmic function. Moreover, the simultaneous bifurcation and distribution of limit cycles from two-period annuli are considered.

We show that in the context of homogeneous Cantor sets, there are generically five possible (open and dense) structures for their arithmetic sum: a Cantor set, an L, R, M-Cantorval and a finite union of closed intervals. The dense case has been dealt with previously. In this paper, we explicitly present pairs of this space which have stable intersection, while not satisfying the generalized thickness test. Also, all the pairs of middle homogeneous Cantor sets whose arithmetic sum is a closed interval are identified.

We investigate stable intersections of conformal Cantor sets and their consequences to dynamical systems. First we define this type of Cantor set and relate it to horseshoes appearing in automorphisms of $\mathbb {C}^2$ . Then we study limit geometries, that is, objects related to the asymptotic shape of the Cantor sets, to obtain a criterion that guarantees stable intersection between some configurations. Finally, we show that the Buzzard construction of a Newhouse region on $\mathrm{Aut}(\mathbb {C}^2)$ can be seen as a case of stable intersection of Cantor sets in our sense and give some (not optimal) estimate on how ‘thick’ those sets have to be.

We consider $C^{r}$-diffeomorphisms ($1 \leq r \leq +\infty$) of a compact smooth manifold having two pairs of hyperbolic periodic points of different indices which admit transverse heteroclinic points and are connected through a blender. We prove that, by giving an arbitrarily $C^{r}$-small perturbation near the periodic points, we can produce a periodic point for which the first return map in the center direction coincides with the identity map up to order $r$, provided the transverse heteroclinic points satisfy certain natural conditions involving higher derivatives of their transition maps in the center direction. As a consequence, we prove that $C^{r}$-generic diffeomorphisms in a small neighborhood of the diffeomorphism under consideration exhibit super-exponential growth of number of periodic points. We also give examples which show the necessity of the conditions we assume.

We prove that perturbing the periodic annulus of the reversible quadratic polynomial differential system $\dot x=y+ax^2$, $\dot y=-x$ with a ≠ 0 inside the class of all quadratic polynomial differential systems we can obtain at most two limit cycles, including their multiplicities. Since the first integral of the unperturbed system contains an exponential function, the traditional methods cannot be applied, except in Figuerasa, Tucker and Villadelprat (2013, J. Diff. Equ., 254, 3647–3663) a computer-assisted method was used. In this paper, we provide a method for studying the problem. This is also the first purely mathematical proof of the conjecture formulated by Dumortier and Roussarie (2009, Discrete Contin. Dyn. Syst., 2, 723–781) for q ⩽ 2. The method may be used in other problems.

In 1958 started the study of the families of algebraic limit cycles in the class of planar quadratic polynomial differential systems. In the present we known one family of algebraic limit cycles of degree 2 and four families of algebraic limit cycles of degree 4, and that there are no limit cycles of degree 3. All the families of algebraic limit cycles of degree 2 and 4 are known, this is not the case for the families of degree higher than 4. We also know that there exist two families of algebraic limit cycles of degree 5 and one family of degree 6, but we do not know if these families are all the families of degree 5 and 6. Until today it is an open problem to know if there are algebraic limit cycles of degree higher than 6 inside the class of quadratic polynomial differential systems. Here we investigate the birth and death of all the known families of algebraic limit cycles of quadratic polynomial differential systems.

In a recent paper by Cantrell et al. [9], two-component KPP systems with competition of Lotka–Volterra type were analyzed and their long-time behaviour largely settled. In particular, the authors established that any constant positive steady state, if unique, is necessarily globally attractive. In the present paper, we give an explicit and biologically very natural example of oscillatory three-component system. Using elementary techniques or pre-established theorems, we show that it has a unique constant positive steady state with two-dimensional unstable manifold, a stable limit cycle, a predator–prey structure near the steady state, periodic wave trains and point-to-periodic rapid travelling waves. Numerically, we also show the existence of pulsating fronts and propagating terraces.

We prove that one-parameter families of real germs of conformal diffeomorphisms tangent to the involution x ↦−x are rigid in the parameter. We establish a connection between the dynamics in the Poincaré and Siegel domains. Although repeatedly employed in the literature, the dynamics in the Siegel domain does not explain the intrinsic real properties of these germs. Rather, these properties are fully elucidated in the Poincaré domain, where the fixed points are linearizable. However, a detailed study of the dynamics in the Siegel domain is of crucial importance. We relate both points of view on the intersection of the Siegel normalization domains.

In this paper we show that the well-known Poincaré–Lyapunov non-degenerate analytic centre problem in the plane and its higher-dimensional version, expressed as the three-dimensional centre problem at the zero-Hopf singularity, have a lot of common properties. In both cases the existence of a neighbourhood of the singularity in the phase space completely foliated by periodic orbits (including equilibria) is characterized by the fact that the system is analytically completely integrable. Hence its Poincaré–Dulac normal form is analytically orbitally linearizable. There also exists an analytic Poincaré return map and, when the system is polynomial and parametrized by its coefficients, the set of systems with centres corresponds to an affine variety in the parameter space of coefficients. Some quadratic polynomial families are considered.

Any singular level of a completely integrable system (c.i.s.) with non-degenerate singularities has a singular affine structure. We shall show how to construct a simple c.i.s. around the level, having the above affine structure. The cotangent bundle of the desingularized level is used to perform the construction, and the c.i.s. obtained looks like the simplest one associated to the affine structure. This method of construction is used to provide several examples of c.i.s. with different kinds of non-degenerate singularities.
