Let H be a real Hilbert space and $\Phi :H\to H$ be a $C^1$ operator with Lipschitzian derivative and closed range. We prove that $\Phi ^{-1}(0)\neq \emptyset $ if and only if, for each $\epsilon>0$, there exist a convex set $X\subset H$ and a convex function $\psi :X\to \mathbf {R}$ such that $\sup _{x\in X}(\|x\|^2+\psi (x))-\inf _{x\in X}(\|x\|^2+\psi (x))<\epsilon $ and $0\in \overline {{\mathrm {conv}}}(\Phi (X))$.

We construct a reflexive Banach space $X_{\mathcal {D}}$ with an unconditional basis such that all spreading models admitted by normalized block sequences in $X_{\mathcal {D}}$ are uniformly equivalent to the unit vector basis of $\ell _1$, yet every infinite-dimensional closed subspace of $X_{\mathcal {D}}$ fails the Lebesgue property. This is a new result in a program initiated by Odell in 2002 concerning the strong separation of asymptotic properties in Banach spaces.

Finite Cartesian products of operators play a central role in monotone operator theory and its applications. Extending such products to arbitrary families of operators acting on different Hilbert spaces is an open problem, which we address by introducing the Hilbert direct integral of a family of monotone operators. The properties of this construct are studied, and conditions under which the direct integral inherits the properties of the factor operators are provided. The question of determining whether the Hilbert direct integral of a family of subdifferentials of convex functions is itself a subdifferential leads us to introducing the Hilbert direct integral of a family of functions. We establish explicit expressions for evaluating the Legendre conjugate, subdifferential, recession function, Moreau envelope, and proximity operator of such integrals. Next, we propose a duality framework for monotone inclusion problems involving integrals of linearly composed monotone operators and show its pertinence toward the development of numerical solution methods. Applications to inclusion and variational problems are discussed.

Let Σ be a σ-algebra of subsets of a set Ω and $B(\Sigma)$ be the Banach space of all bounded Σ-measurable scalar functions on Ω. Let $\tau(B(\Sigma),ca(\Sigma))$ denote the natural Mackey topology on $B(\Sigma)$. It is shown that a linear operator T from $B(\Sigma)$ to a Banach space E is Bochner representable if and only if T is a nuclear operator between the locally convex space $(B(\Sigma),\tau(B(\Sigma),ca(\Sigma)))$ and the Banach space E. We derive a formula for the trace of a Bochner representable operator $T:B({\cal B} o)\rightarrow B({\cal B} o)$ generated by a function $f\in L^1({\cal B} o, C(\Omega))$, where Ω is a compact Hausdorff space.

First we give a counterexample showing that recent results on separate order continuity of Arens extensions of multilinear operators cannot be improved to get separate order continuity on the product of the whole of the biduals. Then we establish conditions on the operators and/or on the underlying Riesz spaces/Banach lattices so that the extensions are order continuous on the product of the whole biduals. We also prove that all Arens extensions of any regular multilinear operator are order continuous in at least one variable and we study when Arens extensions of regular homogeneous polynomials on a Banach lattice $E$ are order continuous on $E^{**}$.

In this article, we study a generalized Bohr radius $R_{p, q}(X), p, q\in [1, \infty )$ defined for a complex Banach space X. In particular, we determine the exact value of $R_{p, q}(\mathbb {C})$ for the cases (i) $p, q\in [1, 2]$ , (ii) $p\in (2, \infty ), q\in [1, 2]$ , and (iii) $p, q\in [2, \infty )$ . Moreover, we consider an n-variable version $R_{p, q}^n(X)$ of the quantity $R_{p, q}(X)$ and determine (i) $R_{p, q}^n(\mathcal {H})$ for an infinite-dimensional complex Hilbert space $\mathcal {H}$ and (ii) the precise asymptotic value of $R_{p, q}^n(X)$ as $n\to \infty $ for finite-dimensional X. We also study the multidimensional analog of a related concept called the p-Bohr radius. To be specific, we obtain the asymptotic value of the n-dimensional p-Bohr radius for bounded complex-valued functions, and in the vector-valued case, we provide a lower estimate for the same, which is independent of n.

Inspired by Xiao’s work on Hankel measures for Hardy and Bergman spaces [‘Pseudo-Carleson measures for weighted Bergman spaces’. Michigan Math. J. 47 (2000), 447–452], we introduce Hankel measures for Fock space $F^p_\alpha $ . Given $p\ge 1$ , we obtain several equivalent descriptions for such measures on $F^p_\alpha $ .

In Kiukas, Lahti, and Ylinen (2006, Journal of Mathematical Physics 47, 072104), the authors asked the following general question. When is a positive operator measure projection valued? A version of this question formulated in terms of operator moments was posed in Pietrzycki and Stochel (2021, Journal of Functional Analysis 280, 109001). Let T be a self-adjoint operator, and let F be a Borel semispectral measure on the real line with compact support. For which positive integers $p< q$ do the equalities $T^k =\int _{\mathbb {R}} x^k F(\mathrm {d\hspace {.1ex}} x)$, $k=p, q$, imply that F is a spectral measure? In the present paper, we completely solve the second problem. The answer is affirmative if $p$ is odd and $q$ is even, and negative otherwise. The case $(p,q)=(1,2)$ closely related to intrinsic noise operator was solved by several authors including Kruszyński and de Muynck, as well as Kiukas, Lahti, and Ylinen. The counterpart of the second problem concerning the multiplicativity of unital positive linear maps on $C^*$-algebras is also provided.

The classical Loewner’s theorem states that operator monotone functions on real intervals are described by holomorphic functions on the upper half-plane. We characterize local order isomorphisms on operator domains by biholomorphic automorphisms of the generalized upper half-plane, which is the collection of all operators with positive invertible imaginary part. We describe such maps in an explicit manner, and examine properties of maximal local order isomorphisms. Moreover, in the finite-dimensional case, we prove that every order embedding of a matrix domain is a homeomorphic order isomorphism onto another matrix domain.

We generalize a classical extension result by Seeley in the context of Bastiani’s differential calculus to infinite dimensions. The construction follows Seeley’s original approach, but is significantly more involved as not only $C^k$ -maps (for ) on (subsets of) half spaces are extended, but also continuous extensions of their differentials to some given piece of boundary of the domains under consideration. A further feature of the generalization is that we construct families of extension operators (instead of only one single extension operator) that fulfill certain compatibility (and continuity) conditions. Various applications are discussed as well.

The aim of this paper is to present some results about the space $L^{\varPhi }(\nu ),$ where $\nu$ is a vector measure on a compact (not necessarily abelian) group and $\varPhi$ is a Young function. We show that under natural conditions, the space $L^{\varPhi }(\nu )$ becomes an $L^{1}(G)$-module with respect to the usual convolution of functions. We also define one more convolution structure on $L^{\varPhi }(\nu ).$

The polarization constant of a Banach space X is defined as

where \[{\text{c}}(k,X)\] stands for the best constant \[C > 0\] such that \[\mathop P\limits^ \vee \leqslant CP\] for every k-homogeneous polynomial \[P \in \mathcal{P}{(^k}X)\]. We show that if X is a finite dimensional complex space then \[{\text{c}}(X) = 1\]. We derive some consequences of this fact regarding the convergence of analytic functions on such spaces.

The result is no longer true in the real setting. Here we relate this constant with the so-called Bochnak’s complexification procedure.

We also study some other properties connected with polarization. Namely, we provide necessary conditions related to the geometry of X for \[c(2,X) = 1\] to hold. Additionally we link polarization constants with certain estimates of the nuclear norm of the product of polynomials.

Non-amenability of ${\mathcal {B}}(E)$ has been surprisingly difficult to prove for the classical Banach spaces, but is now known for E = ℓp and E = Lp for all 1 ⩽ p < ∞. However, the arguments are rather indirect: the proof for L1 goes via non-amenability of $\ell ^\infty ({\mathcal {K}}(\ell _1))$ and a transference principle developed by Daws and Runde (Studia Math., 2010).

In this note, we provide a short proof that ${\mathcal {B}}(L_1)$ and some of its subalgebras are non-amenable, which completely bypasses all of this machinery. Our approach is based on classical properties of the ideal of representable operators on L1, and shows that ${\mathcal {B}}(L_1)$ is not even approximately amenable.

We study Smale skew product endomorphisms (introduced in Mihailescu and Urbański [Skew product Smale endomorphisms over countable shifts of finite type. Ergod. Th. & Dynam. Sys. doi: 10.1017/etds.2019.31. Published online June 2019]) now over countable graph-directed Markov systems, and we prove the exact dimensionality of conditional measures in fibers, and then the global exact dimensionality of the equilibrium measure itself. Our results apply to large classes of systems and have many applications. They apply, for instance, to natural extensions of graph-directed Markov systems. Another application is to skew products over parabolic systems. We also give applications in ergodic number theory, for example to the continued fraction expansion, and the backward fraction expansion. In the end we obtain a general formula for the Hausdorff (and pointwise) dimension of equilibrium measures with respect to the induced maps of natural extensions ${\mathcal{T}}_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}}$ of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}$-maps $T_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}}$, for arbitrary $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}>1$.

We discuss an alternative approach to Fréchet derivatives on Banach spaces inspired by a characterisation of derivatives due to Carathéodory. The approach allows many questions of differentiability to be reduced to questions of continuity. We demonstrate how that simplifies the theory of differentiation, including the rules of differentiation and the Schwarz lemma on the symmetry of second-order derivatives. We also provide a short proof of the differentiable dependence of fixed points in the Banach fixed point theorem.

We consider a multilinear kernel operator between Banach function spaces over finite measures and suitable order continuity properties, namely $T:X_{1}(\,\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}_{1})\times \cdots \times X_{n}(\,\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}_{n})\rightarrow Y(\,\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}_{0})$. Then we define, via duality, a class of linear operators associated to the $j$-transpose operators. We show that, under certain conditions of $p$th power factorability of such operators, there exist vector measures $m_{j}$ for $j=0,1,\ldots ,n$ so that $T$ factors through a multilinear operator $\widetilde{T}:L^{p_{1}}(m_{1})\times \cdots \times L^{p_{n}}(m_{n})\rightarrow L^{p_{0}^{\prime }}(m_{0})^{\ast }$, provided that $1/p_{0}=1/p_{1}+\cdots +1/p_{n}$. We apply this scheme to the study of the class of multilinear Calderón–Zygmund operators and provide some concrete examples for the homogeneous polynomial and multilinear Volterra and Laplace operators.

We introduce and study skew product Smale endomorphisms over finitely irreducible shifts with countable alphabets. This case is different from the one with finite alphabets and we develop new methods. In the conformal context we prove that almost all conditional measures of equilibrium states of summable Hölder continuous potentials are exact dimensional and their dimension is equal to the ratio of (global) entropy and Lyapunov exponent. We show that the exact dimensionality of conditional measures on fibers implies global exact dimensionality of the original measure. We then study equilibrium states for skew products over expanding Markov–Rényi transformations and settle the question of exact dimensionality of such measures. We apply our results to skew products over the continued fraction transformation. This allows us to extend and improve the Doeblin–Lenstra conjecture on Diophantine approximation coefficients to a larger class of measures and irrational numbers.

We present an infinite-dimensional version of Cartan's theorem concerning the existence of a holomorphic inverse of a given holomorphic self-map of a bounded convex open subset of a dual Banach space. No separability is assumed, contrary to previous analogous results. The main assumption is that the derivative operator is power bounded, and which we, in turn, show to be diagonalizable in some cases, like the separable Hilbert space.

In the study of the spectra of algebras of holomorphic functions on a Banach space E, the bidual E″ has a central role, and the spectrum is often shown to be locally homeomorphic to E″. In this paper we consider the problem of spectra of subalgebras invariant under the action of a group (functions f such that f ○ g = f). It is natural to attempt a characterization in terms of the space of orbits E″/~ obtained from E″ through the action of the group, so we pursue this approach here and introduce an analytic structure on the spectrum in some situations. In other situations we encounter some obstacles: in some cases, the lack of structure of E″/~ itself; in others, problems of weak continuity and non-approximability of functions in the algebra. We also define a convolution operation related to the spectrum.

In this paper, we study the bounded approximation property for the weighted space $\mathcal{HV}$(U) of holomorphic mappings defined on a balanced open subset U of a Banach space E and its predual $\mathcal{GV}$(U), where $\mathcal{V}$ is a countable family of weights. After obtaining an $\mathcal{S}$-absolute decomposition for the space $\mathcal{GV}$(U), we show that E has the bounded approximation property if and only if $\mathcal{GV}$(U) has. In case $\mathcal{V}$ consists of a single weight v, an analogous characterization for the metric approximation property for a Banach space E has been obtained in terms of the metric approximation property for the space $\mathcal{G}_v$(U).
