Experimental results on the immune response to cancer indicate that activation of cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) through interactions with dendritic cells (DCs) can trigger a change in CTL migration patterns. In particular, while CTLs in the pre-activation state move in a non-local search pattern, the search pattern of activated CTLs is more localised. In this paper, we develop a kinetic model for such a switch in CTL migration modes. The model is formulated as a coupled system of balance equations for the one-particle distribution functions of CTLs in the pre-activation state, activated CTLs and DCs. CTL activation is modelled via binary interactions between CTLs in the pre-activation state and DCs. Moreover, cell motion is represented as a velocity-jump process, with the running time of CTLs in the pre-activation state following a long-tailed distribution, which is consistent with a Lévy walk, and the running time of activated CTLs following a Poisson distribution, which corresponds to Brownian motion. We formally show that the macroscopic limit of the model comprises a coupled system of balance equations for the cell densities, whereby activated CTL movement is described via a classical diffusion term, whilst a fractional diffusion term describes the movement of CTLs in the pre-activation state. The modelling approach presented here and its possible generalisations are expected to find applications in the study of the immune response to cancer and in other biological contexts in which switch from non-local to localised migration patterns occurs.

A delayed reaction-diffusion system with free boundaries is investigated in this paper to understand how the bacteria spread spatially to larger area from the initial infected habitat. Under the assumptions that the nonlinearities are of monostable type and the initial values satisfy some compatible condition, we show that the free boundary problem is well-posed and discuss the long-time behaviour of solution (including spreading and vanishing) in terms of the spatial-temporal risk index. Furthermore, to determine the spreading speed of free boundaries when spreading occurs, we first study the distribution of roots of a transcendental equation containing a polynomial of degree four and then establish the existence and uniqueness of monotone solution to a delay-induced nonlocal semi-wave problem by employing the approximation method, lower-upper solutions technique and Schauder fixed point theorem. It is shown that time delays slow down the spreading of bacteria.

We investigate a reaction–diffusion problem in a two-component porous medium with a nonlinear interface condition between the different components. One component is connected and the other one is disconnected. The ratio between the microscopic pore scale and the size of the whole domain is described by the small parameter $\epsilon$. On the interface between the components, we consider a dynamic Wentzell-boundary condition, where the normal fluxes from the bulk domains are given by a reaction–diffusion equation for the traces of the bulk solutions, including nonlinear reaction kinetics depending on the solutions on both sides of the interface. Using two-scale techniques, we pass to the limit $\epsilon \to 0$ and derive macroscopic models, where we need homogenisation results for surface diffusion. To cope with the nonlinear terms, we derive strong two-scale convergence results.

The Helmholtz equation $-\nabla\cdot (a\nabla u) - \omega^2 u = f$ is considered in an unbounded wave guide $\Omega := \mathbb{R} \times S \subset \mathbb{R}^d$ , $S\subset \mathbb{R}^{d-1}$ a bounded domain. The coefficient a is strictly elliptic and either periodic in the unbounded direction $x_1 \in \mathbb{R}$ or periodic outside a compact subset; in the latter case, two different periodic media can be used in the two unbounded directions. For non-singular frequencies $\omega$ , we show the existence of a solution u. While previous proofs of such results were based on analyticity arguments within operator theory, here, only energy methods are used.

We investigate the equilibrium configurations of closed planar elastic curves of fixed length, whose stiffness, also known as the bending rigidity, depends on an additional density variable. The underlying variational model relies on the minimisation of a bending energy with respect to shape and density and can be considered as a one-dimensional analogue of the Canham–Helfrich model for heterogeneous biological membranes. We present a generalised Euler–Bernoulli elastica functional featuring a density-dependent stiffness coefficient. In order to treat the inherent nonconvexity of the problem, we introduce an additional length scale in the model by means of a density gradient term. We derive the system of Euler–Lagrange equations and study the bifurcation structure of solutions with respect to the model parameters. Both analytical and numerical results are presented.

We compute the Lie symmetries of characteristic function (CF) hierarchy of compressible turbulence, ignoring the effects of viscosity and heat conductivity. In the probability density function (PDF) hierarchy, a typical non-local nature is observed, which is naturally eliminated in the CF hierarchy. We observe that the CF hierarchy retains all the symmetries satisfied by compressible Euler equations. Broadly speaking, four types of symmetries can be discerned in the CF hierarchy: (i) symmetries corresponding to coordinate system invariance, (ii) scaling/dilation groups, (iii) projective groups and (iv) statistical symmetries, where the latter define measures of intermittency and non-gaussianity. As the multi-point CFs need to satisfy additional constraints such as the reduction condition, the projective symmetries are only valid for monatomic gases, that is, the specific heat ratio, $\gamma = 5/3$. The linearity of the CF hierarchy results in the statistical symmetries due to the superposition principle. For all of the symmetries, the global transformations of the CF and various key compressible statistics are also presented.

A second-order random walk on a graph or network is a random walk where transition probabilities depend not only on the present node but also on the previous one. A notable example is the non-backtracking random walk, where the walker is not allowed to revisit a node in one step. Second-order random walks can model physical diffusion phenomena in a more realistic way than traditional random walks and have been very successfully used in various network mining and machine learning settings. However, numerous questions are still open for this type of stochastic processes. In this work, we extend well-known results concerning mean hitting and return times of standard random walks to the second-order case. In particular, we provide simple formulas that allow us to compute these numbers by solving suitable systems of linear equations. Moreover, by introducing the ‘pullback’ first-order stochastic process of a second-order random walk, we provide second-order versions of the renowned Kac’s and Random Target Lemmas.

We study the effect of population mobility on the transmission dynamics of infectious diseases by considering a susceptible-exposed-infectious-recovered (SEIR) epidemic model with graph Laplacian diffusion, that is, on a weighted network. First, we establish the existence and uniqueness of solutions to the SEIR model defined on a weighed graph. Then by constructing Liapunov functions, we show that the disease-free equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable if the basic reproduction number is less than unity and the endemic equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable if the basic reproduction number is greater than unity. Finally, we apply our generalized weighed graph to Watts–Strogatz network and carry out numerical simulations, which demonstrate that degrees of nodes determine peak numbers of the infectious population as well as the time to reach these peaks. It also indicates that the network has an impact on the transient dynamical behaviour of the epidemic transmission.

The present paper deals with the kinetic-theoretic description of the evolution of systems consisting of many particles interacting not only with each other but also with the external world, so that the equation governing their evolution contains an additional term representing such interaction, called the ‘forcing term’. Firstly, the interactions between pairs of particles are both conservative and nonconservative; the latter represents, among others, birth/death rates. The ‘forcing term’ does not express a ‘classical’ force exerted by the external world on the particles, but a more general influence on the effects of mutual interactions of particles, for instance, climate changes, that increase or decrease the different agricultural productions at different times, thus altering the economic relationships between different subsystems, that in turn can be also perturbed by stock market fluctuations, sudden wars, periodic epidemics, and so on. Thus, the interest towards these problems moves the mathematical analysis of the effects of different kinds of forcing terms on solutions to equations governing the collective (that is statistical) behaviour of such nonconservative many-particle systems. In the present paper, we offer a study of the basic mathematical properties of such solutions, along with some numerical simulations to show the effects of forcing terms for a classical prey–predator model in ecology.

Networked dynamical systems, i.e., systems of dynamical units coupled via nontrivial interaction topologies, constitute models of broad classes of complex systems, ranging from gene regulatory and metabolic circuits in our cells to pandemics spreading across continents. Most of such systems are driven by irregular and distributed fluctuating input signals from the environment. Yet how networked dynamical systems collectively respond to such fluctuations depends on the location and type of driving signal, the interaction topology and several other factors and remains largely unknown to date. As a key example, modern electric power grids are undergoing a rapid and systematic transformation towards more sustainable systems, signified by high penetrations of renewable energy sources. These in turn introduce significant fluctuations in power input and thereby pose immediate challenges to the stable operation of power grid systems. How power grid systems dynamically respond to fluctuating power feed-in as well as other temporal changes is critical for ensuring a reliable operation of power grids yet not well understood. In this work, we systematically introduce a linear response theory (LRT) for fluctuation-driven networked dynamical systems. The derivations presented not only provide approximate analytical descriptions of the dynamical responses of networks, but more importantly, also allow to extract key qualitative features about spatio-temporally distributed response patterns. Specifically, we provide a general formulation of a LRT for perturbed networked dynamical systems, explicate how dynamic network response patterns arise from the solution of the linearised response dynamics, and emphasise the role of LRT in predicting and comprehending power grid responses on different temporal and spatial scales and to various types of disturbances. Understanding such patterns from a general, mathematical perspective enables to estimate network responses quickly and intuitively, and to develop guiding principles for, e.g., power grid operation, control and design.

The method of equivariant moving frames is employed to construct and completely classify the differential invariants for the action of the projective group on functions defined on the two-dimensional projective plane. While there are four independent differential invariants of order $\leq 3$, it is proved that the algebra of differential invariants is generated by just two of them through invariant differentiation. The projective differential invariants are, in particular, of importance in image processing applications.

Steady-state diffusion in long axisymmetric structures is considered. The goal is to assess one-dimensional approximations by comparing them with axisymmetric eigenfunction expansions. Two problems are considered in detail: a finite tube with one end that is partly absorbing and partly reflecting; and two finite coaxial tubes with different cross-sectional radii joined together abruptly. Both problems may be modelled using effective boundary conditions, containing a parameter known as the trapping rate. We show that trapping rates depend on the lengths of the finite tubes (and that they decay slowly as these lengths increase) and we show how trapping rates are related to blockage coefficients, which are well known in the context of potential flow along tubes of infinite length.

Previous study of contact of power-law graded materials concerned the contact of a rigid body (punch) with an elastic inhomogeneous foundation whose inhomogeneity is characterised by the Young modulus varying with depth as a power function. This paper models Hertzian and adhesive contact of two elastic inhomogeneous power-law graded bodies with different exponents. The problem is governed by an integral equation with two different power kernels. A nonstandard method of Gegenbauer orthogonal polynomials for its solution is proposed. It leads to an infinite system of linear algebraic equations of a special structure. The integral representations of the system coefficients are evaluated, and the properties of the system are studied. It is shown that if the exponents coincide, the infinite system admits a simple exact solution that corresponds to the case when the Young moduli are different but the exponents are the same. Formulas for the length of the contact zone, the pressure distribution and the surface normal displacements of the contacting bodies are obtained in the form convenient for computations. Effects of the mismatch in the Young moduli exponents are studied. A comparative analysis of the Hertzian and adhesive contact models clarifies the effects of the surface energy density on the contact pressure, the contact zone size and the profile of the contacting bodies outside the contact area.

The ongoing energy transition challenges the stability of the electrical power system. Stable operation of the electrical power grid requires both the voltage (amplitude) and the frequency to stay within operational bounds. While much research has focused on frequency dynamics and stability, the voltage dynamics has been neglected. Here, we study frequency and voltage stability in the case of simple networks via linear stability and bulk analysis. In particular, our linear stability analysis of the network shows that the frequency secondary control guarantees the stability of a particular electric network. Even more interesting, while we only consider secondary frequency control, we observe a stabilising effect on the voltage dynamics, especially in our numerical bulk analysis.

Structural changes of the pore space and clogging phenomena are inherent to many porous media applications. However, related analytical investigations remain challenging due to potentially vanishing coefficients in the respective systems of partial differential equations. In this research, we apply an appropriate scaling of the unknowns and work with porosity-weighted function spaces. This enables us to prove existence, uniqueness and non-negativity of weak solutions to a combined flow and transport problem with vanishing, but prescribed porosity field, permeability and diffusion.

The standard approach to applying ray theory to solving Maxwell’s equations in the large wave-number limit involves seeking solutions that have (i) an oscillatory exponential with a phase term that is linear in the wave-number and (ii) has an amplitude profile expressed in terms of inverse powers of that wave-number. The Friedlander–Keller modification includes an additional power of this wave-number in the phase of the wave structure, and this additional term is crucial when analysing certain wave phenomena such as creeping and whispering gallery wave propagation. However, other wave phenomena necessitate a generalisation of this theory. The purposes of this paper are to provide a ‘generalised’ Friedlander–Keller ray ansatz for Maxwell’s equations to obtain a new set of field equations for the various phase terms and amplitude of the wave structure; these are then solved subject to boundary data conforming to wave-fronts that are either specified or general. These examples specifically require this generalisation as they are not amenable to classic ray theory.

Steel corrosion plays a central role in different technological fields. In this article, we consider a simple case of a corrosion phenomenon which describes a pure iron dissolution in sodium chloride. This article is devoted to prove rigorously that under rather general hypotheses on the initial data, the solution of this iron dissolution model converges to a self-similar profile as $t\rightarrow +\infty$. We will do so for an equivalent formulation as presented in the book of Avner Friedman about parabolic equations (Friedman (1964) Partial Differential Equations of Parabolic Type, Prentice-Hall, Inc., Englewood Cliffs, NJ.). In order to prove the convergence result, we apply a comparison principle together with suitable upper and lower solutions.

The optimal expansion of a power system with reduced carbon footprint entails dealing with uncertainty about the distribution of the random variables involved in the decision process. Optimisation under ambiguity sets provides a mechanism to suitably deal with such a setting. For two-stage stochastic linear programs, we propose a new model that is between the optimistic and pessimistic paradigms in distributionally robust stochastic optimisation. When using Wasserstein balls as ambiguity sets, the resulting optimisation problem has nonsmooth convex constraints depending on the number of scenarios and a bilinear objective function. We propose a decomposition method along scenarios that converges to a solution, provided a global optimisation solver for bilinear programs with polyhedral feasible sets is available. The solution procedure is applied to a case study on expansion of energy generation that takes into account sustainability goals for 2050 in Europe, under uncertain future market conditions.
