By using the concept of tame embeddings of chains, a characterization is given of the subobjects of the lattice-ordered groups of order-automorphisms of the chains of rational and real numbers.

This paper discusses two notions, developed independently and both termed “cocompactness”. The first arises in the area of topology, where J. de Groot and others have studied spaces which are, in a certain sense, complementary to a given space. If the given space is compact then the complementary spaces are said to be cocompact. The second concept arises in the area of logic and general algebra. Loosely speaking a logic is compact if every inconsistent set of formulas has a finite inconsistent subset. This notion of compactness may be generalized to any closure algebra and the use of the term “cocompactness” to describe the generalization was suggested to the author by Dr. R. A. Bull.

It is shown here that topological and algebraic cocompactness are related in the following ways. Firstly, if a closure algebra is algebraically cocompact then its dual space is topologjcally cocompact, and conditions may be given for the implication to be reversible.3 Furthermore any cocompact topological space may be represented as the continuous 1-1 image of the dual space of a cocompact closure algebra. A final result relates another class of closure algebras with those topological spaces which are compact.

Let t, m > 2 and p > 2 be positive integers and denote by N(t, m, p) the largest integer for which there exists a t-uniform hypergraph with N (not necessarily distinct) edges and having no independent set of edges of size m and no vertex of degree exceeding p. In this paper we complete the determination of N(t, m, 3) and obtain some new bounds on N(t, 2, p).

Let Ω be the weakly pseudoconvex domain

and let ∂Ω be its boundary. If ϕ ∈ L∞ (∂Ω), we denote by Tϕ, the Toephtz operator with symbol ϕ acting on the Hardy space H2(∂Ω), and by J(∂Ω) the C*-subalgebra of B(H2(∂Ω)) generated by the Toeplitz operators with continuous symbol. Our main theorem asserts that J(∂Ω) contains the ideal K of all compact operators on H2(∂Ω), and that the symbol map ϕ→Tϕ induces an isomorphism of C(∂Ω) onto the quotient C*-algebra ℑ(∂Ω)/K. Similar results have been established before for other domains, and in particular when Ω is strongly pseudoconvex. The main interest of our results lies in their proofs: ours are elementary, whereas those used in the strongly pseudoconvex case depend heavily on the theory of the tangential Cauchy-Riemann operator.

Let S be a simplex in En which is homothetic to a given simplex S*, which contains no point of the integral lattice in its interior, and which has maximal volume V(S). We conjecture that V(S) > nn/n!, and establish the conjecture for n < 3.

A group G is called semi-n-abelian, if for every g ∈ G there exists at least one a(g) ∈ G-which depends only on g-such that (gh)n = a-1(g)gnhna(g) for all h ∈ G; a group G is called n-abelian, if a(g) = e for all g ∈ G. According to Durbin the following holds for n-abelian groups: If G is n-abelian for at lesast 3 consecutive integers, then G in n-abelian for all integers and these groups are exactly the abelian groups. In this paper this problem is generalized to the semi-n-abelian case: If a finite group G is semi-n-abelian for at least 4 consecutive integers then G is semi-n-abelian for all integers and these groups are exactly the nilpotent groups, where the Sylow-2-subgroup is abelian, the Sylow-3-subgroup is any element of the Levi-variety ([[g, h], h] = e ∀ g, h ∈ G) and the Sylow-p-subgroup (p < 3) is of class <2. As a consequence we get a description of all finite (3-)groups, which are elements of the Levi-variety.

It is shown that no functor F exists from the category of sets with injections, to the category of algebraically closed fields of given characteristic, with monomorphisms, having the properties that for all sets A. F(A) is an algebraically closed field having transcendence base A and for all injections f. F(f) extends f. There does exist such a functor from the category of linearly-ordered sets with order monomorphisms.

An application to model-theory using the same methods is given showing that while the theory of algebraically closed fields is ω-stable, its Skolemization is not stable in any power.

The two problem, both raised in the literature, are: (I) Is there, amongst all the permutational products (p.p.s.) on the amalgam = (A, B; H) at least one which is a minimal generalized regular product? (II) If one of the p.p.s. on is isomorphic to the generalized free product (g.f.p.) F on U are they all? We answer both of them negatively.

Let T be a totally ordered set, PT the semigroup of partial transformations on T, and A(T) the l-group of order-preserving permutations of T. We show that PT is a regular left l-semigroup. Let be the set of α ∈ PT such that α is order-preserving and the domain of α is a final segment of T. Then is an l-semigroup, and we prove that it is the largest transitive l-subsemigroup of PT which contains A(T). When T is Dedekind complete, we characterize the largest regular l-semigroup of . When A(T) is also 0 − 2 transitive we show that there can be no l-subsemigroup of properly containing A(T) which is either inverse or a union of groups.

O. Kolberg has shown that if the partition generating function is split into five interlocking series, then certain algebraic relations hold among these series. We show that the same phenomenon occurs whenever the number of such series is not a power of two.

For the Weyl algebra A(k) and each finite dimensional division ring D over k, there exists a simple A(k)-module whose commuting ring is D.

It has been known for some time that if A(k) denotes the Weyl algebra over a field k of characteristic zero, the commuting ring of a simple A(k)-module is a division algebra finite dimensional over k (see the introduction of [1]). Which division algebras actually appear? Quebbemann [1] showed that if D is a finite dimensional division algebra whose center is k, then it occurs as a commuting ring. We complete this circle of ideas by showing that any D appears: a division algebra over k appears as the commuting ring of a simple A(k)-module if and only if it is finite dimensional over k.

Barnes (1978, 1979) introduced the concept of a -extreme form, which is a Minkowski-reduced positive definite quadratic form having prescribed diagonal coefficients α1, α2, …, αn and providing a local minimum of the determinant of the form over all such forms. Here a class of forms which are -extreme for all α and all n is described.

The purpose of this note is to investigate traces of the functions In(1 +|u|), where u is a solution of a semi-linear partial differential equation of elliptic type, belonging to an appropriate Sobolev space. This article complements the results of Chabrowski and Thompson (1980), and Mihailov (1972), (1976).

Reynolds (1972), using character-theory, showed that the p-section sums span an ideal of the centre Z(kG) of the group algebra of a finite group G over a field k of characteristic dividing the order of G. In O'Reilly (1973) a character-free proof was given. Here we extend these techniques to show the existence of a wider class of ideals of Z(kG).

Let G be LCA group with an algebraically ordered dual Ĝ. Suppose also that the semigroup P of positive elements in Ĝ is not dense in Ĝ. Subspaces (G) (1 < s < ∞) are defined analogous to the Hardy spaces on the circle group, and the question whether every multiplier from into can be extended to a multiplier from L3(G) into Lq(G) is investigated. If we suppose that s ≠ ∞, the it is shown that such an extension is possible if and only if (s, q) ∈ (1, ∞) × [1, ∞] ∪ {(1, ∞)}. (the negative result for (1, 1) was obtained in a previous paper.)

This paper introduces certain generalization of the notions of approximate limit, continuity and derivative and of absolute continuity, of real functions, leading to generalized integrals of Perron and Denjoy types comprising the AP-integral of Burkill (1931) and Sonouchi and Utagawa (1949) and the AD-integral of Kubota (1963), respectiely. The generalizations are all substantiated by appropriate examples.

Let X be a weakly complete proper cone contained in a weak space E and h(E) the Riesz space generated by the continuous linear forms on E. A positive conical measure μ on X is a positive linear form on h(E)|x. G. Choquet has proved μ is a Daniell integral on E when E is weakly complete, but μ is not generally a Daniell integral on X. However we give an integration theory for functions on X and compare this theory with the classical Daniell theory. The case where μ is maximal in the sense of G. Choquet is remarkable.

Given a measurable function k non-negative a.e. on the circle |z| = 1, when is the outer function Tk (see(1.3)) continuous on the disk |z| < 1 and further, Dirichlet-finite: We shall show, among other results, that the answer is in the positive if , with ess inf k > 0.

We show that every inverse semigroup is an idempotent separating homomorphic image of a convex inverse subsemigroup of a P-semigroup P(G, L, L), where G acts transitively on L. This division theorem for inverse semigroups can be applied to obtain a division theorem for pseudo-inverse semigroups.

It is proved that a regular essentially closed and weakly homomorphically closed proper subclass of rings consists of semiprime rings. A regular class M defines a supernilpotent upper radical if and only if M consists of semiprime rings and the essential cover Mk of M is contained in the semisimple class S U M. A regular essentially closed class M containing all semisimple prime rings, defines a special upper radical if and only if M satisfies condition (S): every M-ring is a subdirect sum of prime M-rings. Thus we obtained a characterization of semisimple classes of special radicals; a subclas S of rings is the semisimple class of a special radical if and only if S is regular, subdirectly closed, essentially closed, and satisfies condition (S). The results are valid for alternative rings too.
