Infectious diseases result from multiple interactions among microbes and hosts, but community ecology approaches are rarely applied. Manipulation of vector populations provides a unique opportunity to test the importance of vectors in infection cycles while also observing changes in pathogen community diversity and species interactions. Yet for many vector-borne infections in wildlife, a biological vector has not been experimentally verified, and few manipulative studies have been performed. Using a captive colony of fruit bats in Ghana, we conducted the first study to experimentally test the role of bat flies as vectors of Bartonella species. We observed changes in the Bartonella bacteria community over time following the decline of bat flies and again after their subsequent restocking. Reduced transmission rates led to microbial community changes attributed to ecological drift and potential species sorting through interspecific competition mediated by host immunity. We demonstrate that forces maintaining diversity in communities of free-living macroorganisms act in similar ways in communities of symbiotic microorganisms, both within and among hosts.
This study examined the impact of video-based synchronous computer-mediated communication (SvCMC) on engagement in collaborative pre-task planning and L2 content used in task performance. One hundred twenty-eight Hong Kong learners of English were assigned to either a face-to-face (FTF) group (n = 64) or an SvCMC group (n = 64), where they completed planning for a monologic task. Based on Philp and Duchesne’s multidimensional model, planning was analyzed for cognitive (negotiation of meaning, semantically engaged talk), social (affiliative responses) and emotional engagement (enjoyment, anxiety), and task performance was coded for L2 content. Results showed that FTF mode led to significantly lower anxiety, more semantically engaged talk, and more affiliative responses, as well as conceptually richer task performances. Use of planned content was predicted by L2 proficiency and semantically engaged talk and negatively predicted by anxiety. Our findings contribute to an understanding of engagement in SvCMC and FTF modes and their impact on L2 learning.
This article offers an in-depth analysis of a little-known work, George Wallace’s A system of the principles of the law of Scotland (1760), which contains the first text in Britain that explicitly advocated total and immediate abolition of both slavery and the slave trade. Wallace’s demand was that the Scottish court immediately recognize the inalienable natural liberty of any person arriving from the American colonies, and he thus anticipated by over a decade the first court cases in Britain which did precisely that. But Wallace went even further, drawing on a wide range of ideas and theories to reject any possible justification for slavery in any form. This article discusses the ways in which he constructed his novel philosophical, political, and legal arguments, the intellectual context of his uncompromising antislavery position, and the surprisingly wide reception of his now-forgotten work. It focuses on Wallace’s nuanced engagements with his multiple sources, including his debts to Montesquieu and to his father, Robert Wallace, a freethinking Church of Scotland minister. Close attention is given to George Wallace’s radical appropriation of Roman law, as well as the laws of nature and nations – traditions that had previously been used to justify, rather than challenge, slavery.
Historian Alfred Crosby developed the concept of “portmanteau biota”—the organisms that accompany a human migration—to analyse European expansion in the Atlantic World. This concept has not been used to understand enslaved African migrations. I identify elements of the portmanteau biota of people whom slavers called “Congoes.” At least five other organisms accompanied these people from Central Africa: Cannabis, manioc, cattle, the tsetse fly, and the trypanosome that causes African sleeping sickness. Based on how these organisms affected social-ecological resilience for the “Congo” migration, I describe four ways to characterize elements of portmanteau biotas. Some organisms negatively impact social-ecological systems in which they were previously unknown; I call these “novel antagonists.” In contrast, “familiar antagonists” negatively impact social-ecological systems in which they were previously known. Other organisms, which I call “mutualists,” enhance social-ecological resilience, differing by whether they were familiar or novel in those systems. The role of any organism is context-dependant, and not categorical. Cannabis, for example, had mutualistic characteristics as it enhanced resilience for African social-ecological systems, and antagonistic characteristics as it enhanced the capacity of overseers to extract labour within plantation capitalism. Applied in this way, the portmanteau biota concept underscores the ecological complexity of human migrations.
This article studies the flow of payout funds in the financial system. Using various data sources and empirical strategies, it provides evidence that a significant portion of payouts enters the banking sector as deposits, which are then intermediated to bank borrowers. The findings highlight an important channel through which corporate payout policies shape capital allocation in the economy and suggest that policies aimed at restricting payouts may distort this process by limiting the flow of funds from large and profitable corporations to small, bank-dependent firms and households.
Do politicians consider the gender of party leaders when selecting coalition partners? Little is known about whether gender shapes how political elites evaluate potential coalition allies. I theorize that politicians prefer women as coalition partners for their perceived qualities, such as consensus building, trustworthiness, and governance abilities, making them a less threatening option for politicians’ aspirations. Conducting an original conjoint experiment with 979 Spanish mayors, I find that mayors, especially those on the center and left, prefer to form coalition governments with parties led by women. The analysis of the mechanisms suggests that women leaders are perceived as easier to communicate and more competent to govern. These findings suggest that gendered perceptions and stereotypes may play a role in elite decision-making and shaping coalition preferences.
From his plans for a combinatorics of symbols, to the mechanization of thought, to designing mechanical automata that could compute for us, to binary notation, Gottfried Leibniz gave us a sense of how rationality was mechanically possible and how reason could be mechanically explained as ‘well-behaved’ thought-to-thought transitions using symbols. In what follows, I shall trace the developments of some of Leibniz’s ideas and present the elements of his vision of a future, which, so I argue, are entirely consonant with modern machine intelligence and which were remarkably ahead of their time.
This paper is concerned with local cohomology sheaves on generalized flag varieties supported in closed Schubert varieties, which carry natural structures as (mixed Hodge) $\mathcal{D}$-modules. We employ Kazhdan–Lusztig theory and Saito’s theory of mixed Hodge modules to describe a general strategy to calculate the simple composition factors, Hodge filtration, and weight filtration on these modules. Our main tool is the Grothendieck–Cousin complex, introduced by Kempf, which allows us to relate the local cohomology modules in question to parabolic Verma modules over the corresponding Lie algebra. We show that this complex underlies a complex of mixed Hodge modules, and is thus endowed with Hodge and weight filtrations. We execute this strategy to calculate the composition factors and weight filtration for Schubert varieties in the Grassmannian; in particular, showing that the weight filtration is controlled by the admissible augmented Dyck patterns of Raicu and Weyman. As an application, upon restriction to the opposite big cell, we recover the composition factors and weight filtration on local cohomology with support in generic determinantal varieties.

We construct an equivalence of categories between the full subcategory of the derived category of quasi-coherent sheaves on the syntomification of W(k) spanned by objects whose Hodge–Tate weights are between $[0,p-2]$ and an appropriate derived category of Fontaine–Laffaille modules.
The history of games is obscured by our inability to recognise indicators of play in the archaeological record. Lines incised on a piece of rounded limestone found at the Roman site of Coriovallum in Heerlen, The Netherlands, evoke a board game yet do not reflect the grid of any game known today. Here, the results of use-wear analysis are used to inform artificial intelligence-driven simulations based on permutations of rules from historic Northern European games. Disproportionate wear along specific lines favours the rules of blocking games, potentially extending the time depth and regional use of this game type.
Despite their significant influence on the development trajectories of recipient nations, we know little about the lending strategies of international financial institutions (IFIs) dominated by authoritarian regimes. In this paper, we provide new evidence that autocratic IFIs are not merely neutral economic actors. Our findings suggest that these institutions provide financial support to authoritarian governments facing acute threats to their survival. We introduce an original data set tracking the lending behavior of eighteen autocratic IFIs across 143 recipient countries from 1967 to 2021. Our findings uncover that aid flows from autocratic IFIs increase precisely when authoritarian regimes are most vulnerable. By situating these insights within the broader aid allocation literature, we provide a fresh perspective on the political calculus of international development lending, with profound implications for understanding global power dynamics.
Cyborgs challenge traditional definitions of life by integrating biological and technological components. Drawing from Gaia theory, post-humanism and Actor-Network Theory, this article argues that life should be redefined as adaptive and relational rather than strictly biological. Cyborgs exhibit autonomy, evolution and self-organization, resembling living systems within Gaia’s self-regulatory processes. By blurring the artificial–natural divide, they compel us to rethink identity, agency and evolution, ultimately expanding our understanding of what it means to be alive in a post-human era.
This article argues for the importance of public understanding of the nature of science, and considers what might be taught in schools to promote this.
The study of legal change at local levels in this forum opens new windows onto the legal landscape, especially because they explore ground-level legal change that reveals far more innovative and incremental shifts in law and legal understanding than is visible at higher altitudes.
International efforts on climate breakdown have focused on reducing climate-damaging emissions. They have basically failed: that can now be seen, as the Conference of Parties (CoP) system declines into near farce, and politics bites back against climate action, while temperatures and impacts accelerate. As we face an increasingly chaotic world, climate adaptation provides an essential pathway to resilience and disaster-readiness. It’s not only about reducing our exposure to damage but also about transforming our ways of life to live with, and in what ways are possible even make the most of, the new, hotter, more difficult reality. There’s no longer any doubt that some level of climate breakdown is inevitable, and, rather than denying this, we must focus on how to adapt to it, in a manner that can bring people together to face the coming storms, and so ultimately perhaps bring them (us) together to stop the storms getting worse.
We argue that transboundary pollution can simultaneously undermine domestic accountability processes and heighten international tensions. We examine this empirically in the context of South Korea, notorious for severe air pollution that partly originates from China. We first show that most media stories and popular public petitions on air pollution emphasize China’s responsibility. We then combine data on daily air quality with survey data (2015–2022) and use instrumental variable regressions to show that on bad air days, South Koreans’ assessments of their own government’s environmental efforts remain consistent but their opinions of China’s leadership worsen. We thus find causal evidence that transboundary pollution contributes to growing public hostility between China and Korea. The findings may also help explain why Korea ranks lowest among OECD countries on air pollution and climate change policies. The research note concludes with broader implications for studying transboundary environmental issues.
Why do some economic shocks have political consequences, upturning elections and ushering in radical candidates, while others are brushed off as structural change? We address this puzzle by looking to geographically concentrated industries, and how they relate to regional identity. While most often presented as a source of regional strength, we show that industrial hubs in the United States have accounted for more job losses than gains over the last twenty years. We then show how this matters through three original survey studies. Workers in geographically concentrated industries belong to denser, more deeply-rooted peer networks; these are associated with a stronger view that politicians are responsible for preventing layoffs. Those same individuals also perceive economic shocks of equal magnitude as more damaging to their region’s standing, compared to the rest of the country. Perceptions of lost regional standing, in turn, are associated with greater demand for populist leadership traits. Finally, we show how these individual attitudes translate into aggregate political behavior. Employment losses in industrial hubs are tied to greater support for Republican candidates, while equivalent losses in non-hubs show no analogous effect. Our account presents a competing picture to the dominant narrative of industrial hubs as founts of innovation and productivity. When threatened by structural forces, such hubs can turn instead into founts of political resentment.
This article reviews Martti Koskenniemi’s To the Uttermost Parts of the Earth: Legal Imagination and International Power, 1300–1780, Dannelle Gutarra Cordero’s She Is Weeping: An Intellectual History of Racialized Slavery and Emotions in the Atlantic World, and James Q. Whitman’s From Masters of Slaves to Lords of Lands: The Transformation of Ownership in the Western World. These authors raise fundamental questions about what was going on and what was or is at stake in the legal theorizing, argumentation, and adjudication that characterized the immediate prehistory of the nascent US constitutional order.
