In the present note, we establish a finiteness theorem for $L^p$ harmonic 1-forms on hypersurfaces with finite index, which is an extension of the result of Choi and Seo (J. Geom. Phys. 129 (2018), 125–132).

An associative ring R is called potent provided that for every $x\in R$, there is an integer $n(x)>1$ such that $x^{n(x)}=x$. A celebrated result of N. Jacobson is that every potent ring is commutative. In this note, we show that a ring R is potent if and only if every nonzero subring S of R contains a nonzero idempotent. We use this result to give a generalization of a recent result of Anderson and Danchev for reduced rings, which in turn generalizes Jacobson’s theorem.

A subset E of a metric space X is said to be starlike-equivalent if it has a neighbourhood which is mapped homeomorphically into $\mathbb{R}^n$ for some n, sending E to a starlike set. A subset $E\subset X$ is said to be recursively starlike-equivalent if it can be expressed as a finite nested union of closed subsets $\{E_i\}_{i=0}^{N+1}$ such that $E_{i}/E_{i+1}\subset X/E_{i+1}$ is starlike-equivalent for each i and $E_{N+1}$ is a point. A decomposition $\mathcal{D}$ of a metric space X is said to be recursively starlike-equivalent, if there exists $N\geq 0$ such that each element of $\mathcal{D}$ is recursively starlike-equivalent of filtration length N. We prove that any null, recursively starlike-equivalent decomposition $\mathcal{D}$ of a compact metric space X shrinks, that is, the quotient map $X\to X/\mathcal{D}$ is the limit of a sequence of homeomorphisms. This is a strong generalisation of results of Denman–Starbird and Freedman and is applicable to the proof of Freedman’s celebrated disc embedding theorem. The latter leads to a multitude of foundational results for topological 4-manifolds, including the four-dimensional Poincaré conjecture.

We classify embeddings of the finite groups $A_4$, $S_4$ and $A_5$ in the Lie group $G_2(\mathbb C)$ up to conjugation.

We calculate the moments of the characteristic polynomials of $N\times N$ matrices drawn from the Hermitian ensembles of Random Matrix Theory, at a position t in the bulk of the spectrum, as a series expansion in powers of t. We focus in particular on the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble. We employ a novel approach to calculate the coefficients in this series expansion of the moments, appropriately scaled. These coefficients are polynomials in N. They therefore grow as $N\to\infty$, meaning that in this limit the radius of convergence of the series expansion tends to zero. This is related to oscillations as t varies that are increasingly rapid as N grows. We show that the $N\to\infty$ asymptotics of the moments can be derived from this expansion when $t=0$. When $t\ne 0$ we observe a surprising cancellation when the expansion coefficients for N and $N+1$ are formally averaged: this procedure removes all of the N-dependent terms leading to values that coincide with those expected on the basis of previously established asymptotic formulae for the moments. We obtain as well formulae for the expectation values of products of the secular coefficients.

In this note, we give a classification of the maximal order Abelian subgroups of finite irreducible Coxeter groups. We also prove a Weyl group analog of Cartan’s theorem that all maximal tori in a connected compact Lie group are conjugate.

For any algebraically closed field K and any endomorphism f of $\mathbb{P}^1(K)$ of degree at least 2, the automorphisms of f are the Möbius transformations that commute with f, and these form a finite subgroup of $\operatorname{PGL}_2(K)$. In the moduli space of complex dynamical systems, the locus of maps with nontrivial automorphisms has been studied in detail and there are techniques for constructing maps with prescribed automorphism groups that date back to Klein. We study the corresponding questions when K is the algebraic closure $\bar{\mathbb{F}}_p$ of a finite field. We use the classification of finite subgroups of $\operatorname{PGL}_2(\bar{\mathbb{F}}_p)$ to show that every finite subgroup is realizable as an automorphism group. To construct examples, we use methods from modular invariant theory. Then, we calculate the locus of maps over $\bar{\mathbb{F}}_p$ of degree 2 with nontrivial automorphisms, showing how the geometry and possible automorphism groups depend on the prime p.

We call a packing of hyperspheres in n dimensions an Apollonian sphere packing if the spheres intersect tangentially or not at all; they fill the n-dimensional Euclidean space; and every sphere in the packing is a member of a cluster of $n+2$ mutually tangent spheres (and a few more properties described herein). In this paper, we describe an Apollonian packing in eight dimensions that naturally arises from the study of generic nodal Enriques surfaces. The $E_7$, $E_8$ and Reye lattices play roles. We use the packing to generate an Apollonian packing in nine dimensions, and a cross section in seven dimensions that is weakly Apollonian. Maxwell described all three packings but seemed unaware that they are Apollonian. The packings in seven and eight dimensions are different than those found in an earlier paper. In passing, we give a sufficient condition for a Coxeter graph to generate mutually tangent spheres and use this to identify an Apollonian sphere packing in three dimensions that is not the Soddy sphere packing.

Let K be an infinite field of characteristic $p>0$ and let $\lambda, \mu$ be partitions, where $\mu$ has two parts. We find sufficient arithmetic conditions on $p, \lambda, \mu$ for the existence of a nonzero homomorphism $\Delta(\lambda) \to \Delta (\mu)$ of Weyl modules for the general linear group $GL_n(K)$. Also, for each p we find sufficient conditions so that the corresponding homomorphism spaces have dimension at least 2.

It is well known that the category of comodules over a flat Hopf algebroid is abelian but typically fails to have enough projectives, and more generally, the category of graded comodules over a graded flat Hopf algebroid is abelian but typically fails to have enough projectives. In this short paper, we prove that the category of connective graded comodules over a connective, graded, flat, finite-type Hopf algebroid has enough projectives. Applications to algebraic topology are given: the Hopf algebroids of stable co-operations in complex bordism, Brown–Peterson homology, and classical mod p homology all have the property that their categories of connective graded comodules have enough projectives. We also prove that categories of connective graded comodules over appropriate Hopf algebras fail to be equivalent to categories of graded connective modules over a ring.

We provide a complete classification of the singularities of cluster algebras of finite type with trivial coefficients. Alongside, we develop a constructive desingularization of these singularities via blowups in regular centers over fields of arbitrary characteristic. Furthermore, from the same perspective, we study a family of cluster algebras which are not of finite type and which arise from a star shaped quiver.

We present a framework for the computation of the Hopf 2-cocycles involved in the deformations of Nichols algebras over semisimple Hopf algebras. We write down a recurrence formula and investigate the extent of the connection with invariant Hochschild cohomology in terms of exponentials. As an example, we present detailed computations leading to the explicit description of the Hopf 2-cocycles involved in the deformations of a Nichols algebra of Cartan type $A_2$ with $q=-1$, a.k.a. the positive part of the small quantum group $\mathfrak{u}^+_{\sqrt{-\text{1}}}(\mathfrak{sl}_3)$. We show that these cocycles are generically pure, that is they are not cohomologous to exponentials of Hochschild 2-cocycles.

We show via $\ell^2$-homology that the rational homological dimension of a lattice in a product of simple simply connected Chevalley groups over global function fields is equal to the rational cohomological dimension and to the dimension of the associated Bruhat–Tits building.

We characterize when a set of simple closed curves in an orientable surface forms a bouquet, in terms of relations between the corresponding Dehn twists.

In this work, we study foliations of arbitrary codimension $\mathfrak{F}$ with integrable normal bundles on complete Riemannian manifolds. We obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for $\mathfrak{F}$ to be totally geodesic. For this, we introduce a special number $\mathfrak{G}_{\mathfrak{F}}^{\alpha}$ that measures when the foliation ceases to be totally geodesic. Furthermore, applying some maximum principle we deduce geometric properties for $\mathfrak{F}$. We conclude with a geometrical version of Novikov’s theorem (Trans. Moscow Math. Soc. (1965), 268–304), for Riemannian compact manifolds of arbitrary dimension.

Recently Ovsienko and Tabachnikov considered extensions of Somos and Gale-Robinson sequences, defined over the algebra of dual numbers. Ovsienko used the same idea to construct so-called shadow sequences derived from other nonlinear recurrence relations exhibiting the Laurent phenomenon, with the original motivation being the hope that these examples should lead to an appropriate notion of a cluster superalgebra, incorporating Grassmann variables. Here, we present various explicit expressions for the shadow of Somos-4 sequences and describe the solution of a general Somos-4 recurrence defined over the $\mathbb{C}$-algebra of dual numbers from several different viewpoints: analytic formulae in terms of elliptic functions, linear difference equations, and Hankel determinants.

We initiate the study of C*-algebras and groupoids arising from left regular representations of Garside categories, a notion which originated from the study of Braid groups. Every higher rank graph is a Garside category in a natural way. We develop a general classification result for closed invariant subspaces of our groupoids as well as criteria for topological freeness and local contractiveness, properties which are relevant for the structure of the corresponding C*-algebras. Our results provide a conceptual explanation for previous results on gauge-invariant ideals of higher rank graph C*-algebras. As another application, we give a complete analysis of the ideal structures of C*-algebras generated by left regular representations of Artin–Tits monoids.
