Bringing together an international team of scholars from various linguistic areas, theoretical viewpoints, and educational contexts, this book makes the case for strengthening the role of linguistics in second language (L2) teaching and learning. Seeing first-hand themselves how the strengths and tools of the science of language contribute greatly to pedagogical effectiveness in the L2 classroom, the authors of each chapter lay out the strengths of linguistics for L2 teaching and learning with examples, case studies, research, anecdotal evidence, illustrations, and sample activities for the language classroom. The book argues as well for the place of L2 theory and data in linguistic inquiry and linguistics education. Bringing these disparate disciplines together around the shared reality of language itself has great promise of mutual benefit. Accessibly written with readers from both disciplines in mind, each chapter includes recommended readings and discussion questions intended to spark conversations across the disciplines.
The sixth annual meeting of the African Studies Association was held at the Sir Francis Drake Hotel in San Francisco. The opening plenary session included three papers concerned with North African affairs. Benjamin Rivlin of Brooklyn College, considering “The Maghreb and Pan-Arabism,” began with a series of questions. Were the aspirations of the Maghreb states for Arab unity incompatible with their African vocation? Ought the Maghreb to be considered as a part of Africa, or was this precluded by the region's commitment to the Arab East? What was the extent of this commitment, and what identity did the Maghreb seek?
This article argues that the late Ottoman Empire saw the rise of a novel concept of difference, the “millet,” that fundamentally reordered the lives of the empire’s many subjects. Rather than a term with clearly identifiable content—“religion,” “nation,” “ethnicity,” or otherwise—millet should be understood instead as auguring the emergence of history as the organizing principle of the late Ottoman politics of difference. Unlike the Islamic distinction between Muslim and non-Muslim that had previously structured Ottoman rule, the millet paradigm did not stipulate any predetermined set of terms through which difference had to be articulated. Instead, it issued an injunction to Ottoman subjects to merely say who they were, to declare the name they went by—to confess. This simple injunction, however, which appeared to require nothing other than assent to the reality of history itself, tended to misfire. When it did, Ottoman subjects confronted the anxious truth that history—the purported ground of the millet paradigm of difference—was no ground at all.
This case note highlights fundamental errors of law committed by Mabuse J in MM v OM [2024] (3) SA 133 (GP). It demonstrates that the judge failed to appreciate that the phrase “pension interest” as defined in the Divorce Act refers to a benefit held by a retirement fund that only becomes due to be shared when the court dissolves a marriage where one of the spouses is a member of the retirement fund. Most importantly, it is shown that Mabuse J ignored the binding precedent of the Supreme Court of Appeal and failed to consider other judgments of the High Court, which clearly explain that where an exit event from the fund is anything but divorce, there can be no pension interest that the court can order to be shared. This note argues that the law was incorrectly applied in this case, and its approach, reasoning and conclusion must be rejected.
Spaceflight missions must limit biological contamination on both the outbound and return legs to comply with planetary protection requirements. Depending on the mission profile, contamination concerns may include the potential presence of bioactive molecules as defined by NASA’s Planetary Protection policies. Thus, the present study has examined the temperature and time requirements for sufficient inactivation/degradation of an infectious, heat-stable prion protein (Sup35NM), which serves as a model bioactive molecule. Bovine serum albumin was used to establish the method parameters and feasibility. Differential scanning calorimetry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, analytical reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography, and mass spectrometry were utilized to analyze heat-treated samples, with non-treated samples serving as controls. Heat treatment at 400°C for 5 seconds was found to result in substantial decomposition of Sup35NM. In addition to the disruption of the protein backbone amide bonds, the side chain residues were also compromised. Fragments of molecular weight <4600 were observed by mass spectrometry but the impact of treatment on both the backbone and side chains of Sup35NM suggested that these fragments would not self-associate to create potentially pathogenic entities. The present methodology provided insight into the protein degradation process and can be applied to a variety of treatment strategies (e.g., any form of sterilization or inactivation) to ensure a lack of protein-based contamination of isolated extraterrestrial specimens.
We present a deep learning architecture that reconstructs a source of data at given spatio-temporal coordinates using other sources. The model can be applied to multiple sources in a broad sense: the number of sources may vary between samples, the sources can differ in dimensionality and sizes, and cover distinct geographical areas at irregular time intervals. The network takes as input a set of sources that each include values (e.g., the pixels for two-dimensional sources), spatio-temporal coordinates, and source characteristics. The model is based on the Vision Transformer, but separately embeds the values and coordinates and uses the embedded coordinates as relative positional embedding in the computation of the attention. To limit the cost of computing the attention between many sources, we employ a multi-source factorized attention mechanism, introducing an anchor-points-based cross-source attention block. We name the architecture MoTiF (multi-source transformer via factorized attention). We present a self-supervised setting to train the network, in which one source chosen randomly is masked and the model is tasked to reconstruct it from the other sources. We test this self-supervised task on tropical cyclone (TC) remote-sensing images, ERA5 states, and best-track data. We show that the model is able to perform TC ERA5 fields and wind intensity forecasting from multiple sources, and that using more sources leads to an improvement in forecasting accuracy.
Obstetric complications (OCs) are associated with cognitive and brain abnormalities observed in patients with schizophrenia. Gyrification, a measure of cortical integrity sensitive to events occurring during the prenatal and perinatal periods, is also altered in first-episode psychosis (FEP). We examined the relationship between OCs and gyrification in FEP, as well as whether gyrification mediates the relationship between OCs and cognition.
Methods
We examined differences in the Local Gyrification Index (LGI) for the frontal, parietal, temporal, occipital, and cingulate cortices between 139 FEP patients and 125 healthy controls (HCs). Regression analyses explored whether OCs and diagnosis interact to explain LGI variation. Parametric mediation analyses were conducted to assess the effect of LGI on the relationship between OCs and cognition for FEP and HC.
Results
Significant LGI differences were observed between FEP patients and HC in the left parietal and bilateral cingulate and occipital cortices. There was a significant interaction between OCs and diagnosis on the left cingulate cortex (LCC) that was specific to males (p = 0.04) and was driven by gestational rather than intrauterine OCs.
In HCs, OCs had a direct effect on working memory (WM) (p = 0.048) in the mediation analysis, whereas in FEP, we observed no significant effect of OCs on either verbal or WM.
Conclusions
OCs interact with diagnosis to predict LCC gyrification, such that males with FEP exposed to OCs exhibit the lowest LGI. OCs influence WM, and LCC gyrification may mediate this relation only in HC, suggesting a differential neurodevelopmental process in psychosis.
The macro-social and environmental conditions in which people live, such as the level of a country’s development or inequality, are associated with brain-related disorders. However, the relationship between these systemic environmental factors and the brain remains unclear. We aimed to determine the association between the level of development and inequality of a country and the brain structure of healthy adults.
Methods
We conducted a cross-sectional study pooling brain imaging (T1-based) data from 145 magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies in 7,962 healthy adults (4,110 women) in 29 different countries. We used a meta-regression approach to relate the brain structure to the country’s level of development and inequality.
Results
Higher human development was consistently associated with larger hippocampi and more expanded global cortical surface area, particularly in frontal areas. Increased inequality was most consistently associated with smaller hippocampal volume and thinner cortical thickness across the brain.
Conclusions
Our results suggest that the macro-economic conditions of a country are reflected in its inhabitants’ brains and may explain the different incidence of brain disorders across the world. The observed variability of brain structure in health across countries should be considered when developing tools in the field of personalized or precision medicine that are intended to be used across the world.
The trap vowel /æ/ is known to display a complex variable duration in many English dialects, but this phenomenon is understudied in Australian English. Previous analyses suggest that trap duration is sensitive to the effects of following phonetic environments in complex ways, but that a lexically specific effect may also operate in determining duration. This study aims to investigate phonetic and lexical effects through an acoustic analysis of trap duration in Australian English. Speakers from a range of areas in Sydney that vary in their ethnic and linguistic diversity produced the trap vowel in select phonetic contexts. Results suggest that trap exhibits a complex hierarchy of durations which are conditioned by the characteristics of the following coda, as well as a notably long duration in the affective adjectives mad and sad compared to other words with coda /d/ that were tested. However, these effects were found to be relatively less pronounced among speakers from more ethnically and linguistically diverse regions of Sydney. This may be attributed to high levels of language and dialect contact occurring in more diverse areas resulting in a gradual reduction in the degree of trap durational variability.
Treatment guidelines recommend evidence-based psychological therapies for adults with intellectual disabilities with co-occurring anxiety or depression. No previous research has explored the effectiveness of these therapies in mainstream psychological therapy settings or outside specialist settings.
Aims
To evaluate the effectiveness of psychological therapies delivered in routine primary care settings for people with intellectual disability who are experiencing co-occurring depression or anxiety.
Method
This study used linked electronic healthcare records of 2 048 542 adults who received a course of NHS Talking Therapies for anxiety and depression in England between 2012 and 2019 to build a retrospective, observational cohort of individuals with intellectual disability, matched 1:2 with individuals without intellectual disability. Logistic regressions were used to compare metrics of symptom improvement and deterioration used in the national programme, on the basis of depression and anxiety measures collected before and at the last attended therapy session.
Results
The study included 6870 adults with intellectual disability and 2 041 672 adults without intellectual disability. In unadjusted analyses, symptoms improved on average for people with intellectual disability after a course of therapy, but these individuals experienced poorer outcomes compared with those without intellectual disability (reliable improvement 60.2% for people with intellectual disability v. 69.2% for people without intellectual disability, odds ratio 0.66, 95% CI 0.63–0.70; reliable deterioration 10.3% for people with intellectual disability v. 5.7% for those without intellectual disability, odds ratio 1.89, 95% CI 1.75–2.04). After propensity score matching, some differences were attenuated (reliable improvement, adjusted odds ratio 0.97, 95% CI 1.91–1.04), but some outcomes remained poorer for people with intellectual disability (reliable deterioration, adjusted odds ratio 1.28, 95% CI 1.16–1.42).
Conclusions
Evidence-based psychological therapies may be effective for adults with intellectual disability, but their outcomes may be similar to (for improvement and recovery) or poorer than (for deterioration) those for adults without intellectual disability. Future work should investigate the impact of adaptations of therapies for those with intellectual disability to make such interventions more effective and accessible for this population.
In March 2024, the East Midlands Health Protection Team was notified of a case of invasive Group A Streptococcus (iGAS) infection in an elderly care home resident. Twenty-two days later, another case in a resident from the same floor of the care home was notified. In accordance with national guidelines, an outbreak was declared, and a multidisciplinary outbreak control team (OCT) was urgently convened. Screening for GAS throat carriage was undertaken for staff and residents, excluding those receiving end-of-life care. All isolates were strain typed and characterised. Infection prevention and control (IPC) visits were undertaken to provide ongoing support. Screening identified five residents and five staff members positive for GAS. Antibiotic prophylaxis was provided to all staff throughout the setting (n = 74) and all residents on the affected floor (n = 35). Three individuals were positive on repeat screening. All staff and residents screened negative after 4 months and the two clinical cases recovered. Eleven of the 12 GAS isolates were identified as emm 3.93. This outbreak highlighted the importance of rapid screening, possible only through the deployment of a dedicated team, and rescreening post-decolonising treatment, as a means to contain such outbreaks.
Titanium clips (TC) have previously been successfully used for dural repair and closure in spinal surgeries. Meanwhile, minimally invasive spine surgery (MIS) has widely expanded its indications. At our institution, MIS has become the preferred approach for most spine intradural lesions. While the technique has yielded favorable clinical outcomes, we have successfully incorporated the use of TC for dura closure as an alternative to traditional suturing. This technical note outlines the step-by-step application of TC for duroplasty and emphasizes the factors that make their use advantageous in MIS. We present our experience and discuss relevant literature and key nuances.

Altruism and ubuntu (I am because we are) are essential aspects of African culture. These push the agenda of mental health in Africa and depart from the individualistic, reductionist disease-oriented models that are dominant in present-day psychiatry. The healing process is usually private in the West, with interactions only between the patient and their health professional. However, this healing process in Africa is an interdependent process where the whole community is involved (Johnson 1994).

Registry data on new cases and deaths in Africa for all ages for the most common haematological malignancies (HMs): non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHL), leukemias, Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) and multiple myeloma (MM) are listed in Table 88.1 (Ferlay et al. 2020). The age-standardized incidence rate/100,000 population for most HMs is significantly greater in adults than in children, reflecting the reduced incidence of cancer in children in general (Okello et al. 2021). Table 88.2 shows the total number of paediatric and adult HMs over a 5-year period at the Uganda Cancer Institute in Kampala, a national referral centre. Similar results were reported from a cancer centre in Tanzania (Leak et al. 2020). This chapter focuses on the most common HMs in sub-Saharan Africa in adults, including adolescents who are often cared for in adult clinics and centres.

Urbanisation has significant health implications, both positive and negative. Cities offer opportunities for public health improvement, but also pose challenges. Climate change and air pollution are major risks to global health, disproportionately affecting vulnerable populations. Integrating green and blue spaces into urban environments can enhance mental and physical health. Inclusive urban design encourages outdoor activities and reduces environmental pollutants. Promoting active travel and reducing reliance on motor vehicles improves public health. The concept of planetary health emphasises the interconnectedness of human health and the Earth’s natural systems. Social inequalities contribute to uneven health risks, particularly in deprived communities. Rural areas face unique health challenges. A well-designed built environment uplifts spirits and promotes healthy living. Addressing health impacts requires a systems-based approach and long-term resilience planning.
This chapter takes the example of the International Criminal Court’s ‘Independent Expert Review’ (IER) of 2020 to reflect on the theory and practice of expert reform work. Taking actor-network theory’s prompt that systems – like international organisations – are neither static nor fixed, but ‘in a perpetual state of forming and reforming’, I read reform neither as rational science nor as a mere reproduction of hegemony, but as the expert reassembly of the ICC’s context, problems, resources, and priorities. In the IER example, the expert work of reform and reassembly effected nothing less than the recalibration of the relationship between the Court and its states parties. Through their work, experts knit together ideas of autonomy and accountability, their training, investigatory processes, documents, and resource and time constraints to centre the efficiency concerns of wealthy states parties in the judicial and prosecutorial function. In this way, expert reform work illustrates the power of expert articulation by putting abstract expectations, ideas, ‘realities’, constraints, and materials into organisational action in deeply distributive ways.
This article investigates the scientization process in central banks, using the Bank of England (BoE) as a case study. Its main goal is to clarify the interactions and tensions among three dimensions of scientization: contributory, policymaking and legitimizing. To do so, we outline an ideal type of contributory scientization in central banks, whereby they become active contributors to science. The article derives empirically observable characteristics for this ideal type, regarding leadership and staff profiles, use of internal resources, composition of external networks, and publication and discursive outputs. The BoE is then contrasted to this ideal type of a central bank thoroughly involved in contributory scientization. The empirical material includes archives and interviews as well as three databases providing quantitative information from the 1970s to 2019. We find that the development of contributory scientization is strategically motivated, often generating tensions with policymaking and legitimizing dimensions. Our findings suggest that scientization in central banks is best understood as a three-dimensional, non-linear process, rather than a steamroller.
