Let $\alpha \colon X \to Y$ be a finite cover of smooth curves. Beauville conjectured that the pushforward of a general vector bundle under $\alpha $ is semistable if the genus of Y is at least $1$ and stable if the genus of Y is at least $2$. We prove this conjecture if the map $\alpha $ is general in any component of the Hurwitz space of covers of an arbitrary smooth curve Y.

We prove that the cohomology rings of the moduli space $M_{d,\chi }$ of one-dimensional sheaves on the projective plane are not isomorphic for general different choices of the Euler characteristics. This stands in contrast to the $\chi $-independence of the Betti numbers of these moduli spaces. As a corollary, we deduce that $M_{d,\chi }$ are topologically different unless they are related by obvious symmetries, strengthening a previous result of Woolf distinguishing them as algebraic varieties.

Given a perfect field $k$ with algebraic closure $\overline {k}$ and a variety $X$ over $\overline {k}$, the field of moduli of $X$ is the subfield of $\overline {k}$ of elements fixed by field automorphisms $\gamma \in \operatorname {Gal}(\overline {k}/k)$ such that the Galois conjugate $X_{\gamma }$ is isomorphic to $X$. The field of moduli is contained in all subextensions $k\subset k'\subset \overline {k}$ such that $X$ descends to $k'$. In this paper, we extend the formalism and define the field of moduli when $k$ is not perfect. Furthermore, Dèbes and Emsalem identified a condition that ensures that a smooth curve is defined over its field of moduli, and prove that a smooth curve with a marked point is always defined over its field of moduli. Our main theorem is a generalization of these results that applies to higher-dimensional varieties, and to varieties with additional structures. In order to apply this, we study the problem of when a rational point of a variety with quotient singularities lifts to a resolution. As a consequence, we prove that a variety $X$ of dimension $d$ with a smooth marked point $p$ such that $\operatorname {Aut}(X,p)$ is finite, étale and of degree prime to $d!$ is defined over its field of moduli.

In the article [CEGS20b], we introduced various moduli stacks of two-dimensional tamely potentially Barsotti–Tate representations of the absolute Galois group of a p-adic local field, as well as related moduli stacks of Breuil–Kisin modules with descent data. We study the irreducible components of these stacks, establishing, in particular, that the components of the former are naturally indexed by certain Serre weights.

We give a variant of Artin algebraization along closed subschemes and closed substacks. Our main application is the existence of étale, smooth or syntomic neighborhoods of closed subschemes and closed substacks. In particular, we prove local structure theorems for stacks and their derived counterparts and the existence of henselizations along linearly fundamental closed substacks. These results establish the existence of Ferrand pushouts, which answers positively a question of Temkin–Tyomkin.

We develop a theory of parabolic induction and restriction functors relating modules over Coulomb branch algebras, in the sense of Braverman-Finkelberg-Nakajima. Our functors generalize Bezrukavnikov-Etingof’s induction and restriction functors for Cherednik algebras, but their definition uses different tools.

After this general definition, we focus on quiver gauge theories attached to a quiver $\Gamma $. The induction and restriction functors allow us to define a categorical action of the corresponding symmetric Kac-Moody algebra $\mathfrak {g}_{\Gamma }$ on category $ \mathcal {O}$ for these Coulomb branch algebras. When $ \Gamma $ is of Dynkin type, the Coulomb branch algebras are truncated shifted Yangians and quantize generalized affine Grassmannian slices. Thus, we regard our action as a categorification of the geometric Satake correspondence.

To establish this categorical action, we define a new class of ‘flavoured’ KLRW algebras, which are similar to the diagrammatic algebras originally constructed by the second author for the purpose of tensor product categorification. We prove an equivalence between the category of Gelfand-Tsetlin modules over a Coulomb branch algebra and the modules over a flavoured KLRW algebra. This equivalence relates the categorical action by induction and restriction functors to the usual categorical action on modules over a KLRW algebra.

In this paper, we investigate the theory of heights in a family of stacky curves following recent work of Ellenberg, Satriano, and Zureick-Brown. We first give an elementary construction of a height which is seen to be dual to theirs. We count rational points having bounded ESZ-B height on a particular stacky curve, answering a question of Ellenberg, Satriano, and Zureick-Brown. We also show that when the Euler characteristic of stacky curves is non-positive, the ESZ-B height coming from the anti-canonical divisor class fails to have the Northcott property. We prove that a stacky version of a conjecture of Vojta is equivalent to the $abc$-conjecture.

We prove a Tannakian form of Drinfeld's lemma for isocrystals on a variety over a finite field, equipped with actions of partial Frobenius operators. This provides an intermediate step towards transferring V. Lafforgue's work on the Langlands correspondence over function fields from $\ell$-adic to $p$-adic coefficients. We also discuss a motivic variant and a local variant of Drinfeld's lemma.

We prove some results on the nilpotent orbit theorem for complex variations of Hodge structure.

In this paper, we study compactifications of the moduli of smooth del Pezzo surfaces using K-stability and the line arrangement. We construct K-moduli of log del Pezzo pairs with sum of lines as boundary divisors, and prove that for $d=2,3,4$, these K-moduli of pairs are isomorphic to the K-moduli spaces of del Pezzo surfaces. For $d=1$, we prove that they are different by exhibiting some walls.

We prove a large finite field version of the Boston–Markin conjecture on counting Galois extensions of the rational function field with a given Galois group and the smallest possible number of ramified primes. Our proof involves a study of structure groups of (direct products of) racks.

We classify the subpencils of complete linear systems for the hyperplane sections on K3 surfaces obtained as the complete intersection of a hyperquadric and a hypercubic. The classification is done from three points of view, namely, the type of a general fibre, the base locus and the Horikawa index of the essential member. This classification shows the distinct phenomenons depending on the rank of the hyperquadrics containing the surface.

We define a one-dimensional family of Bridgeland stability conditions on $\mathbb {P}^n$, named “Euler” stability condition. We conjecture that the “Euler” stability condition converges to Gieseker stability for coherent sheaves. Here, we focus on ${\mathbb P}^3$, first identifying Euler stability conditions with double-tilt stability conditions, and then we consider moduli of one-dimensional sheaves, proving some asymptotic results, boundedness for walls, and then explicitly computing walls and wall-crossings for sheaves supported on rational curves of degrees $3$ and $4$.

We study the spaces of twisted conformal blocks attached to a $\Gamma$-curve $\Sigma$ with marked $\Gamma$-orbits and an action of $\Gamma$ on a simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak {g}$, where $\Gamma$ is a finite group. We prove that if $\Gamma$ stabilizes a Borel subalgebra of $\mathfrak {g}$, then the propagation theorem and factorization theorem hold. We endow a flat projective connection on the sheaf of twisted conformal blocks attached to a smooth family of pointed $\Gamma$-curves; in particular, it is locally free. We also prove that the sheaf of twisted conformal blocks on the stable compactification of Hurwitz stack is locally free. Let $\mathscr {G}$ be the parahoric Bruhat–Tits group scheme on the quotient curve $\Sigma /\Gamma$ obtained via the $\Gamma$-invariance of Weil restriction associated to $\Sigma$ and the simply connected simple algebraic group $G$ with Lie algebra $\mathfrak {g}$. We prove that the space of twisted conformal blocks can be identified with the space of generalized theta functions on the moduli stack of quasi-parabolic $\mathscr {G}$-torsors on $\Sigma /\Gamma$ when the level $c$ is divisible by $|\Gamma |$ (establishing a conjecture due to Pappas and Rapoport).

We extend classical results of Perego and Rapagnetta on moduli spaces of sheaves of type OG10 to moduli spaces of Bridgeland semistable objects on the Kuznetsov component of a cubic fourfold. In particular, we determine the period of this class of varieties and use it to understand when they become birational to moduli spaces of sheaves on a K3 surface.

For an algebraic K3 surface with complex multiplication (CM), algebraic fibres of the associated twistor space away from the equator are again of CM type. In this paper, we show that algebraic fibres corresponding to points at the same altitude of the twistor base ${S^2} \simeq \mathbb{P}_\mathbb{C}^1$ share the same CM endomorphism field. Moreover, we determine all the admissible Picard numbers of the twistor fibres.

We generalize Bloch’s map on torsion cycles from algebraically closed fields to arbitrary fields. While Bloch’s map over algebraically closed fields is injective for zero-cycles and for cycles of codimension at most two, we show that the generalization to arbitrary fields is only injective for cycles of codimension at most two but, in general, not for zero-cycles. Our result implies that Jannsen’s cycle class map in integral $\ell $-adic continuous étale cohomology is, in general, not injective on torsion zero-cycles over finitely generated fields. This answers a question of Scavia and Suzuki.

Let $(S,L)$ be a general polarised Enriques surface, with L not numerically 2-divisible. We prove the existence of regular components of all Severi varieties of irreducible nodal curves in the linear system $|L|$, that is, for any number of nodes $\delta =0, \ldots , p_a(L)-1$. This solves a classical open problem and gives a positive answer to a recent conjecture of Pandharipande–Schmitt, under the additional condition of non-2-divisibility.

Let $\sigma $ be a stability condition on the bounded derived category $D^b({\mathop{\mathrm {Coh}}\nolimits } W)$ of a Calabi–Yau threefold W and $\mathcal {M}$ a moduli stack parametrizing $\sigma $-semistable objects of fixed topological type. We define generalized Donaldson–Thomas invariants which act as virtual counts of objects in $\mathcal {M}$, fully generalizing the approach introduced by Kiem, Li and the author in the case of semistable sheaves. We construct an associated proper Deligne–Mumford stack $\widetilde {\mathcal {M}}^{\mathbb {C}^{\ast }}$, called the $\mathbb {C}^{\ast }$-rigidified intrinsic stabilizer reduction of $\mathcal {M}$, with an induced semiperfect obstruction theory of virtual dimension zero, and define the generalized Donaldson–Thomas invariant via Kirwan blowups to be the degree of the associated virtual cycle $[\widetilde {\mathcal {M}}]^{\mathrm {vir}} \in A_0(\widetilde {\mathcal {M}})$. This stays invariant under deformations of the complex structure of W. Applications include Bridgeland stability, polynomial stability, Gieseker and slope stability.

In this note, we prove that the moduli stack of vector bundles on a curve with a fixed determinant is ${\mathbb A}^1$-connected. We obtain this result by classifying vector bundles on a curve up to ${\mathbb A}^1$-concordance. Consequently, we classify ${\mathbb P}^n$-bundles on a curve up to ${\mathbb A}^1$-weak equivalence, extending a result in [3] of Asok-Morel. We also give an explicit example of a variety which is ${\mathbb A}^1$-h-cobordant to a projective bundle over ${\mathbb P}^2$ but does not have the structure of a projective bundle over ${\mathbb P}^2$, thus answering a question of Asok-Kebekus-Wendt [2].
