We introduce interpolated multiple Hurwitz polylogs and interpolated multiple Hurwitz zeta values. In addition, we discuss the generating functions for the sum of the polylogs/zeta values of fixed weight, depth, and all heights. The functions are expressed in terms of generalized hypergeometric functions. Compared with the pioneering results of Ohno and Zagier on the generating function, our setup generalizes the results in three directions, namely, at general heights, with a t-interpolation, and as a Hurwitz type. As an application, by fixing the Hurwitz parameter to rational numbers, the generating functions for multiple zeta values with level are given.

This paper focuses on the Cauchy problem for a one-dimensional quasilinear hyperbolic–parabolic coupled system with initial data given on a line of parabolicity. The coupled system is derived from the Poiseuille flow of full Ericksen–Leslie model in the theory of nematic liquid crystals, which incorporates the crystal and liquid properties of the materials. The main difficulty comes from the degeneracy of the hyperbolic equation, which makes that the system is not continuously differentiable and then the classical methods for the strictly hyperbolic–parabolic coupled systems are invalid. With a choice of a suitable space for the unknown variable of the parabolic equation, we first solve the degenerate hyperbolic problem in a partial hodograph plane and express the smooth solution in terms of the original variables. Based on the smooth solution of the hyperbolic equation, we then construct an iterative sequence for the unknown variable of the parabolic equation by the fundamental solution of the heat equation. Finally, we verify the uniform convergence of the iterative sequence in the selected function space and establish the local existence and uniqueness of classical solutions to the degenerate coupled problem.

This paper provides a convenient and practical method to compute the homology and intersection pairing of a branched double cover of the 4-ball.

To projections of links in the 3-ball, and to projections of surfaces in the 4-ball into the boundary sphere, we associate a sequence of homology groups, called the disoriented homology. We show that the disoriented homology is isomorphic to the homology of the double branched cover of the link or surface. We define a pairing on the first disoriented homology group of a surface and show that this is equal to the intersection pairing of the branched cover. These results generalize work of Gordon and Litherland, for embedded surfaces in the 3-sphere, to arbitrary surfaces in the 4-ball. We also give a generalization of the signature formula of Gordon–Litherland to the general setting.

Our results are underpinned by a theorem describing a handle decomposition of the branched double cover of a codimension-2 submanifold in the n-ball, which generalizes previous results of Akbulut–Kirby and others.

We study the geometry of Hilbert spaces with complete Pick kernels and the geometry of sets in complex hyperbolic space, taking advantage of the correspondence between the two topics. We focus on questions of assembling Hilbert spaces into larger spaces and of assembling sets into larger sets. Model questions include describing the possible three-dimensional subspaces of four-dimensional Hilbert spaces with Pick kernels and describing the possible triangular faces of a tetrahedron in $\mathbb {CH}^{n}$. A novel technical tool is a complex analog of the cosine of a vertex angle.

We describe the small-time heat kernel asymptotics of real powers $\operatorname {\Delta }^r$, $r \in (0,1)$ of a non-negative self-adjoint generalized Laplacian $\operatorname {\Delta }$ acting on the sections of a Hermitian vector bundle $\mathcal {E}$ over a closed oriented manifold M. First, we treat separately the asymptotic on the diagonal of $M \times M$ and in a compact set away from it. Logarithmic terms appear only if n is odd and r is rational with even denominator. We prove the non-triviality of the coefficients appearing in the diagonal asymptotics, and also the non-locality of some of the coefficients. In the special case $r=1/2$, we give a simultaneous formula by proving that the heat kernel of $\operatorname {\Delta }^{1/2}$ is a polyhomogeneous conormal section in $\mathcal {E} \boxtimes \mathcal {E}^* $ on the standard blow-up space $\operatorname {M_{heat}}$ of the diagonal at time $t=0$ inside $[0,\infty )\times M \times M$.

For linear nonuniform cellular automata (NUCA) which are local perturbations of linear CA over a group universe G and a finite-dimensional vector space alphabet V over an arbitrary field k, we investigate their Dedekind finiteness property, also known as the direct finiteness property, i.e., left or right invertibility implies invertibility. We say that the group G is $L^1$-surjunctive, resp. finitely $L^1$-surjunctive, if all such linear NUCA are automatically surjective whenever they are stably injective, resp. when in addition k is finite. In parallel, we introduce the ring $D^1(k[G])$ which is the Cartesian product $k[G] \times (k[G])[G]$ as an additive group but the multiplication is twisted in the second component. The ring $D^1(k[G])$ contains naturally the group ring $k[G]$ and we obtain a dynamical characterization of its stable finiteness for every field k in terms of the finite $L^1$-surjunctivity of the group G, which holds, for example, when G is residually finite or initially subamenable. Our results extend known results in the case of CA.

Residual torsion-free nilpotence has proved to be an important property for knot groups with applications to bi-orderability and ribbon concordance. Mayland proposed a strategy to show that a two-bridge knot group has a commutator subgroup which is a union of an ascending chain of para-free groups. This paper proves Mayland’s assertion and expands the result to the subgroups of two-bridge link groups that correspond to the kernels of maps to $\mathbb{Z}$. We call these kernels the Alexander subgroups of the links. As a result, we show the bi-orderability of a large family of two-bridge link groups. This proof makes use of a modified version of a graph-theoretic construction of Hirasawa and Murasugi in order to understand the structure of the Alexander subgroup for a two-bridge link group.

Using probabilistic tools, we prove that any weak* continuous semigroup $(T_t)_{t \geqslant 0}$ of self-adjoint unital completely positive measurable Schur multipliers acting on the space $\mathrm {B}({\mathrm {L}}^2(X))$ of bounded operators on the Hilbert space ${\mathrm {L}}^2(X)$, where X is a suitable measure space, can be dilated by a weak* continuous group of Markov $*$-automorphisms on a bigger von Neumann algebra. We also construct a Markov dilation of these semigroups. Our results imply the boundedness of the McIntosh’s ${\mathrm {H}}^\infty $ functional calculus of the generators of these semigroups on the associated Schatten spaces and some interpolation results connected to ${\mathrm {BMO}}$-spaces. We also give an answer to a question of Steen, Todorov, and Turowska on completely positive continuous Schur multipliers.

We prove Fermat’s Last Theorem over $\mathbb {Q}(\sqrt {5})$ and $\mathbb {Q}(\sqrt {17})$ for prime exponents $p \ge 5$ in certain congruence classes modulo $48$ by using a combination of the modular method and Brauer–Manin obstructions explicitly given by quadratic reciprocity constraints. The reciprocity constraint used to treat the case of $\mathbb {Q}(\sqrt {5})$ is a generalization to a real quadratic base field of the one used by Chen and Siksek. For the case of $\mathbb {Q}(\sqrt {17})$, this is insufficient, and we generalize a reciprocity constraint of Bennett, Chen, Dahmen, and Yazdani using Hilbert symbols from the rational field to certain real quadratic fields.

If ${\mathbf v} \in {\mathbb R}^{V(X)}$ is an eigenvector for eigenvalue $\lambda $ of a graph X and $\alpha $ is an automorphism of X, then $\alpha ({\mathbf v})$ is also an eigenvector for $\lambda $. Thus, it is rather exceptional for an eigenvalue of a vertex-transitive graph to have multiplicity one. We study cubic vertex-transitive graphs with a nontrivial simple eigenvalue, and discover remarkable connections to arc-transitivity, regular maps, and number theory.

We study for each fixed integer $g \ge 2$, for all primes $\ell $ and p with $\ell \neq p$, finite regular directed graphs associated with the set of equivalence classes of $\ell $-marked principally polarized superspecial abelian varieties of dimension g in characteristic p, and show that the adjacency matrices have real eigenvalues with spectral gaps independent of p. This implies a rapid mixing property of natural random walks on the family of isogeny graphs beyond the elliptic curve case and suggests a potential construction of the Charles–Goren–Lauter-type cryptographic hash functions for abelian varieties. We give explicit lower bounds for the gaps in terms of the Kazhdan constant for the symplectic group when $g \ge 2$. As a byproduct, we also show that the finite regular directed graphs constructed by Jordan and Zaytman also has the same property.

On post-critically finite self-similar sets, whose walk dimensions of diffusions are in general larger than 2, we find a sharp region where two classes of Besov spaces, the heat Besov spaces $B^{p,q}_\sigma (K)$ and the Lipschitz–Besov spaces $\Lambda ^{p,q}_\sigma (K)$, are identical. In particular, we provide concrete examples that $B^{p,q}_\sigma (K)=\Lambda ^{p,q}_\sigma (K)$ with $\sigma>1$. Our method is purely analytical, and does not involve heat kernel estimate.

We show that the first-order logical theory of the binary overlap-free words (and, more generally, the $\alpha $-free words for rational $\alpha $, $2 < \alpha \leq 7/3$), is decidable. As a consequence, many results previously obtained about this class through tedious case-based proofs can now be proved “automatically,” using a decision procedure, and new claims can be proved or disproved simply by restating them as logical formulas.

We develop multisummability, in the positive real direction, for generalized power series with natural support, and we prove o-minimality of the expansion of the real field by all multisums of these series. This resulting structure expands both $\mathbb {R}_{\mathcal {G}}$ and the reduct of $\mathbb {R}_{\text {an}^*}$ generated by all convergent generalized power series with natural support; in particular, its expansion by the exponential function defines both the gamma function on $(0,\infty )$ and the zeta function on $(1,\infty )$.

This paper introduces type P web supercategories. They are defined as diagrammatic monoidal ${\mathbb {k}}$-linear supercategories via generators and relations. We study the structure of these categories and provide diagrammatic bases for their morphism spaces. We also prove these supercategories provide combinatorial models for the monoidal supercategory generated by the symmetric powers of the natural module and their duals for the Lie superalgebra of type P.

We present a unified theory for the almost periodicity of functions with values in an arbitrary Banach space, measures and distributions via almost periodic elements for the action of a locally compact abelian group on a uniform topological space. We discuss the relation between Bohr- and Bochner-type almost periodicity, and similar conditions, and how the equivalence among such conditions relates to properties of the group action and the uniformity. We complete the paper by demonstrating how various examples considered earlier all fit in our framework.

We investigate the pluriclosed flow on Oeljeklaus–Toma manifolds. We parameterize left-invariant pluriclosed metrics on Oeljeklaus–Toma manifolds, and we classify the ones which lift to an algebraic soliton of the pluriclosed flow on the universal covering. We further show that the pluriclosed flow starting from a left-invariant pluriclosed metric has a long-time solution $\omega _t$ which once normalized collapses to a torus in the Gromov–Hausdorff sense. Moreover, the lift of $\tfrac {1}{1+t}\omega _t$ to the universal covering of the manifold converges in the Cheeger–Gromov sense to $(\mathbb H^s\times \mathbb C^s, \tilde {\omega }_{\infty })$, where $\tilde {\omega }_{\infty }$ is an algebraic soliton.

For a bounded analytic function $\varphi $ on the unit disk $\mathbb {D}$ with $\|\varphi \|_\infty \le 1$, we consider the defect operators $D_\varphi $ and $D_{\overline \varphi }$ of the Toeplitz operators $T_{\overline \varphi }$ and $T_\varphi $, respectively, on the weighted Bergman space $A^2_\alpha $. The ranges of $D_\varphi $ and $D_{\overline \varphi }$, written as $H(\varphi )$ and $H(\overline \varphi )$ and equipped with appropriate inner products, are called sub-Bergman spaces.

We prove the following three results in the paper: for $-1<\alpha \le 0$, the space $H(\varphi )$ has a complete Nevanlinna–Pick kernel if and only if $\varphi $ is a Möbius map; for $\alpha>-1$, we have $H(\varphi )=H(\overline \varphi )=A^2_{\alpha -1}$ if and only if the defect operators $D_\varphi $ and $D_{\overline \varphi }$ are compact; and for $\alpha>-1$, we have $D^2_\varphi (A^2_\alpha )= D^2_{\overline \varphi }(A^2_\alpha )=A^2_{\alpha -2}$ if and only if $\varphi $ is a finite Blaschke product. In some sense, our restrictions on $\alpha $ here are best possible.

We define a class of invariants, which we call homological invariants, for persistence modules over a finite poset. Informally, a homological invariant is one that respects some homological data and takes values in the free abelian group generated by a finite set of indecomposable modules. We focus in particular on groups generated by “spread modules,” which are sometimes called “interval modules” in the persistence theory literature. We show that both the dimension vector and rank invariant are equivalent to homological invariants taking values in groups generated by spread modules. We also show that the free abelian group generated by the “single-source” spread modules gives rise to a new invariant which is finer than the rank invariant.

We provide a correspondence between one-sided coideal subrings and one-sided ideal two-sided coideals in an arbitrary bialgebroid. We prove that, under some expected additional conditions, this correspondence becomes bijective for Hopf algebroids. As an application, we investigate normal Hopf ideals in commutative Hopf algebroids (affine groupoid schemes) in connection with the study of normal affine subgroupoids.
