Tribrachidium heraldicum Glaessner in Glaessner and Daily, 1959 is a triradial Ediacaran organism found in abundance within the Ediacara Member of the Flinders Ranges, South Australia. Here we report and describe a new species within the genus Tribrachidium Glaessner in Glaessner and Daily, 1959: Tribrachidium gehlingi new species from Nilpena Ediacara National Park (NENP), South Australia. Tribrachidium gehlingi n. sp. has low relief and three slightly curved, main arm-like structures that leave a conspicuous gap between the end of the arm-like structures and rim. In place of the ‘bulla’ found on T. herladicum, there are three secondary arm-like structures approximately half of the length of the main arm-like structures. Key morphological differences between the two species are statistically significantly different. Additionally, the species occur together within the same fossiliferous event horizons, indicating that the observed morphological differences are unlikely a result of taphonomy.

Mary Astell's female retreat is a political project, dedicated to the full self-realization of students in a world that diminishes them and thwarts the development of their potential. Newly analyzing the pedagogical tools and distinctive setting of her seminary, I reveal its most progressive promise. In this political reading of A Serious Proposal, Astell emerges as an early figure in the broad political tradition of female resistance to patriarchal domination. She enables a subordinated group of women to arrive at new and oppositional ways of understanding themselves, each other, and even the world, and to act for change. The methods and tactics she employs in her retreat bring to light some surprisingly democratic and feminist dimensions of Mary Astell.
Limited analyses based on national samples have assessed whether early attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms predict later internalizing and externalizing symptoms in youth and the influence of sex and pubertal timing on subsequent psychiatric symptoms. This study analyzed data (n = 2818) from the Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes Program national cohort. Analyses used data from early childhood (mean age = 5.3 years) utilizing parent-reported ADHD symptoms to predict rates of internalizing and externalizing symptoms from late childhood/adolescence (mean age = 11.9 years). Within a subsample age at peak height velocity (APHV) acted as a proxy to assess pubertal timing from early childhood (mean age = 5.4 years) to adolescence (mean age = 12.3 years). Early-childhood ADHD symptoms predicted later psychiatric symptoms, including anxiety, depression, aggressive behavior, conduct problems, oppositional defiant disorder, and rule-breaking behavior. Earlier APHV was associated with increased Conduct Disorder symptoms from late childhood to adolescence for females only. A stronger relation between ADHD symptoms and later aggression was observed in females with earlier APHV, whereas this same pattern with aggression, conduct problems and depression was observed in males with later APHV. Clinicians should consider that both young girls and boys with elevated ADHD symptoms, particularly with off-set pubertal timing, may be at risk for later psychiatric symptoms.
The authors‘ previous research has demonstrated that parallel mechanisms (PMs) with hybrid branch chains (i.e., branch chains containing planar or spatial loops) can possess symbolic forward position (SFP) solutions and motion decoupling (MD). In order to further study the conditions of a three-chain six degrees of freedom (DOF) parallel mechanism with SFP and MD, this paper proposes one 6-DOF branch chain A and two 5-DOF branch chains B and C. Based on these, a class of four 6-DOF PMs with three branch chains is devised. The symbolic position analysis of three of four such PMs is performed consequently, featuring partial MD and SFPs, which reveals that if the position or orientation of a point on the moving platform can be determined by the position of the hybrid branch chain, the PM exhibits partial MD and SFP. Finally, the accuracy of the symbolized forward and inverse solution algorithms is verified through numerical examples. This research brings a new insight into the design and position analysis of 6-DOF PMs, particularly those with SFP and partial MD.
This paper investigates how the members of the Kigye Yu lineage imagined and invented their ancestral roots during the Chosŏn dynasty (1392–1910) and how such a pursuit of ancestral origins led to subsequent developments in genealogical records. As early as the fifteenth century, Chosŏn elites began to show interests in genealogy that included identifying remote ancestors from ancient times for various political, social, and cultural reasons. From the seventeenth century, the transformation of kinship organization in line with the Confucian ideal of patriliny and elites’ competition for power and prestige intensified genealogical consciousness. Elites became heavily invested in searching for ancestral origins in the form of their lineages’ founders and their tombs. While claiming to rely on documentary and physical evidence, elites often deviated from their professed empiricism and adopted evidence from dubious sources such as oral testimonies and geomancy to rationalize invented ancestral roots. Such pliable approaches, often observed in other early modern cultures such as late imperial China and Europe, opened a floodgate of lineages glorifying their ancestry by pushing their origins back even to mythical founders of ancient Korean and Chinese kingdoms, and adorning their lineages with invented heroes. At the same time, loopholes and blank spots in genealogies enabled quasi- and nonelites to become a member of prominent lineages by grafting their names onto their family trees.
We report a home-built velocity-gradient-tensor-resolved particle image velocimetry (VGTR-PIV) system which spatio-temporally resolves all components of the velocity gradient tensor. This technique is applied to the paradigmatic turbulent Rayleigh–Bénard convection system in a cylindrical cell at three representative positions, i.e. centre, side and bottom regions. The VGTR-PIV system allows us to directly measure, for the first time, the spatio-temporally resolved energy dissipation rate and enstrophy in turbulent thermal convection. In the experiment, the Rayleigh number $Ra$ varied in the range $2 \times 10^8 \leqslant Ra \leqslant 8 \times 10^9$ and the Prandtl number $Pr$ was fixed at $Pr = 4.34$. Compared with the fully resolved energy dissipation rate $\varepsilon$, the pseudo-dissipation provides the best estimate within $3\,\%$, the planar (two-dimensional) surrogate has a larger relative error and the one-dimensional surrogate leads to the largest error. The power-law scalings of the time-averaged energy dissipation rate with the Rayleigh number follow $\langle \varepsilon _c \rangle _t / (\nu ^3 H^{-4}) = 9.86 \times 10^{-6} Ra^{1.54 \pm 0.02}$, $\langle \varepsilon _s \rangle _t / (\nu ^3 H^{-4}) = 9.26 \times 10^{-3} Ra^{1.25 \pm 0.02}$ and $\langle \varepsilon _b \rangle _t / (\nu ^3 H^{-4}) = 2.70 \times 10^{-2} Ra^{1.23 \pm 0.02}$ in the centre, side and bottom regions, respectively where $\nu$ is dynamic viscosity and $H$ is cell height. These scaling relations, along with our earlier measured time-averaged energy dissipation rate at the bottom wall surface $\langle \varepsilon _w \rangle _t / (\nu ^3 H^{-4}) = 9.65 \times 10^{-2} Ra^{1.25 \pm 0.02}$ (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 947, 2022, A15), provide important constraints against which theoretical models may be tested. For the centre and side locations in the convection cell, the probability density functions (p.d.f.s) of the energy dissipation rate and enstrophy both follow a stretched exponential distribution. For the bottom region, the p.d.f.s of dissipation and enstrophy exhibit a stretched exponential distribution outside the viscous boundary layer and an exponential distribution inside the viscous boundary layer. It is also found that extreme events with high dissipation are the most intermittent in the side region, whereas the bottom region is less intermittent than the cell centre.
A partir de los conceptos de modo y sistema cerámico, analizamos el rango de variación estilística en las cerámicas de El Tintal, Guatemala, como indicadores de conexiones sociales, económicas y políticas a nivel regional. Nuestro estudio muestra que la población de El Tintal participó en sistemas cerámicos con una distribución geográfica extensa durante los períodos preclásico medio y tardío, clásico temprano y clásico tardío. Durante los períodos preclásico terminal y clásico terminal, sin embargo, El Tintal participó en sistemas de afiliación con cobertura espacial limitada, aunque entre estos circulan conjuntos de cerámicas particulares a larga distancia. Con base en los resultados del estudio proponemos aquí algunas explicaciones a estos patrones en términos de dinámicas de interacción sociocultural y económicas.
Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a progressive genetic disorder characterized by muscle weakness ultimately leading to pulmonary impairments that can be fatal. The recent approval of nusinersen, a disease-modifying therapy, substantially changed the prognosis for patients, particularly in children. However, real-world evidence about its long-term effectiveness in adults remains limited. This study aimed to document longitudinal data on motor function, pulmonary function and patient-reported outcome measures of Canadian adults with SMA type 2 and 3 treated with nusinersen.
Methods:
Outcomes from 17 patients were collected at the Institut de réadaptation en déficience physique de Québec during routine clinical visits over 36 months post nusinersen treatment, using the Hammersmith Functional Motor Scale Expanded for SMA (HFMSE), Revised Upper Limb Module (RULM), 6-Minute Walk Test (6MWT), Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Adult Test of Neuromuscular Disorders (CHOP-ATEND), SMA functional rating scale (SMAFRS), pulmonary function testing and subjective changes reported by patients.
Results:
After 36 months, 9 patients showed motor function improvement. Changes beyond the minimal clinically important difference were seen for four patients on the HFMSE, four patients on the RULM and five patients on the 6MWT. Pulmonary function remained stable for most subjects. Subjective positive changes were reported in 88% of patients and five patients showed improvement in the SMAFRS.
Conclusion:
This real-world study demonstrates the positive effects of nusinersen in adults with SMA types 2 and 3. Although stabilizing the patient’s condition is considered therapeutic success, this study shows an improvement in motor function and subjective gains in several patients.
What is the role of intimacy in sex? The two culturally dominant views on this matter both share the implicit assumption that sex is genuinely intimate only when connected to romance, and hence that sex and intimacy stand in a contingent relationship: it is possible to have good sex without it. Liberals embrace this possibility and affirm the value of casual sex, while conservatives attempt to safeguard intimacy by insisting on romantic exclusivity. I reject their shared assumption and argue for a necessary connection between intimacy and sex, in that sexual activity as such aims at a specific form of intimacy, irrespective of whether it takes place in casual encounters or romantic relationships, and the difference between good and bad sex consists in whether this end is attained. To defend this view, I develop a general account of intimacy and apply it to isolate its specifically sexual form.
Observations of radiocarbon (14C) in Earth’s atmosphere and other carbon reservoirs are important to quantify exchanges of CO2 between reservoirs. The amount of 14C is commonly reported in the so-called Delta notation, i.e., Δ14C, the decay- and fractionation-corrected departure of the ratio of 14C to total C from that ratio in an absolute international standard; this Delta notation permits direct comparison of 14C/C ratios in the several reservoirs. However, as Δ14C of atmospheric CO2, Δ14CO2 is based on the ratio of 14CO2 to total atmospheric CO2, its value can and does change not just because of change in the amount of atmospheric14CO2 but also because of change in the amount of total atmospheric CO2, complicating ascription of change in Δ14CO2 to change in one or the other quantity. Here we suggest that presentation of atmospheric 14CO2 amount as mole fraction relative to dry air (moles of 14CO2 per moles of dry air in Earth’s atmosphere), or as moles or molecules of 14CO2 in Earth’s atmosphere, all readily calculated from Δ14CO2 and the amount of atmospheric CO2 (with slight dependence on δ13CO2), complements presentation only as Δ14CO2, and can provide valuable insight into the evolving budget and distribution of atmospheric 14CO2.
Despite its key role in out-of-Africa hominin dispersals, little is known about Pleistocene human occupation of north-eastern Africa outside the Nile Valley and desert oases. A survey in Wadi Abu Subeira aims to help fill this gap and attests to the repeated occupation of the Eastern Desert during the Pleistocene.
We consider the problem of minimizing the $L^\infty$ norm of a function of the hessian over a class of maps, subject to a mass constraint involving the $L^\infty$ norm of a function of the gradient and the map itself. We assume zeroth and first order Dirichlet boundary data, corresponding to the “hinged” and the “clamped” cases. By employing the method of $L^p$ approximations, we establish the existence of a special $L^\infty$ minimizer, which solves a divergence PDE system with measure coefficients as parameters. This is a counterpart of the Aronsson-Euler system corresponding to this constrained variational problem. Furthermore, we establish upper and lower bounds for the eigenvalue.
We investigate an optimal stopping problem for the expected value of a discounted payoff on a regime-switching geometric Brownian motion under two constraints on the possible stopping times: only at exogenous random times, and only during a specific regime. The main objectives are to show that an optimal stopping time exists as a threshold type and to derive expressions for the value functions and the optimal threshold. To this end, we solve the corresponding variational inequality and show that its solution coincides with the value functions. Some numerical results are also introduced. Furthermore, we investigate some asymptotic behaviors.
Jc Beall's Divine Contradiction proposes a bold response to the so-called ‘logical’ problems of the Trinity: we should admit without embarrassment that divine reality is flat-out contradictory. Beall defends his proposal against a wide range of objections and contends that it enjoys various philosophical and theological virtues, including the virtues of metaphysical and epistemological neutrality. While I agree that ceteris paribus these are desirable, I question whether the possession of these virtues really gives Beall's approach any advantage over its competitors when the chips are finally counted.
As in many areas of pre-Reformation devotion, the dead were a conspicuous presence in English religious guilds of all sizes. Members joined in the expectation that the guild would say prayers and perform masses for their souls after death, and previous members and benefactors would be commemorated with regularity. This article, however, investigates a new avenue of the fraternal relationship with the dead: the practice of enrolling people after their death. Doing so shifts the paradigm of our understanding of the multidimensional functions of pre-Reformation society, commemoration, and guilds, privileging the experiences of both the dead and living equally, while highlighting the interplay of the spiritual and socioeconomic. Taking the extensive membership records of England's “great” guilds as its basis, this article reveals that postmortem enrollment was a practice both common and widespread, and it addresses questions of practicalities and motivations. As such, the richness of commemoration in late medieval society is demonstrated, and the importance of postmortem membership brought to the fore.
The onset of convection in a horizontal porous medium layer saturated with a nanofluid and heated from below is investigated via linear stability analysis and numerical simulation. The Darcy–Buongiorno model is used to describe the convective transport behaviour of the nanofluid and the settling effect of nanoparticles due to gravity is considered in addition to thermophoresis and Brownian diffusion. The linear stability analysis shows that the gravity settling is a substantial stabilizing mechanism restraining the destabilizing factors such as thermal buoyancy and thermophoresis. The stability threshold is determined by the relative strength of thermophoresis to gravity settling. It is found that the system is destabilized when the thermophoretic mobility prevails. As the nanoparticle size increases, the gravity settling effect is promoted and makes the system more stable. In particular, the onset of instability is dominated by the oscillatory mode once the nanoparticle concentration is in a stably stratified profile across the porous layer. When the Rayleigh–Darcy number $Ra_D$ exceeds the critical value, the spectrum of the growth rates of the unstable modes rises with increasing $Ra_D$ and $Rn$ (i.e. the concentration Rayleigh number), and eventually the unstable modes in the high-wavenumber region exhibit the same instability. The evolution of the convection is further examined by numerical simulation. The results verify the stability characteristics predicted by linear stability analysis. Moreover, the pattern of fingering convection of the nanofluid concentration is observed once the nanofluid concentration is unstably stratified and the density difference across the porous layer is large enough.
