People have often thought that Kant left no room for compassion in the virtuous life, because virtue for him is about doing the right thing when you don't feel like it. However, compassion is an important virtue in Kantian ethics, where it is understood as a form of moral cognition grounded in a commitment to act for the good of others. Though this means that the Kantian virtue of compassion is primarily intellectual in nature, contrary to what people have thought, the virtuous person can experience great feelings of compassion, affection and pleasure. And yet, these feelings are not strictly necessary for someone to have the virtue. For this reason, some, for example neurodiverse, agents who would not qualify as virtuous on the Aristotelian picture do qualify as virtuous on the Kantian picture. This expands the traditional virtue label in a good way.
Porolepiforms represent one of the key lineages of early lobe-finned fishes. They include two taxonomic groupings: the paraphyletic ‘porolepidids’, characterised by rhombic scales and extensive development of cosmine on dermal bones; and the monophyletic, more nested holoptychiids, characterised by round scales and lack of cosmine. Braincases and endocasts represent important sources of information bearing on sarcopterygian interrelationships, but the level of detail available for these structures is highly uneven. Among porolepiforms, the braincase and endocast is best known for the Middle Devonian holoptychiid Glyptolepis groenlandica, but even here there is lack of detail compared to the most completely understood examples from other sarcopterygian lineages. Here we address this deficiency through micro-computed tomographic study of the intact neurocranium of Durialepis edentatus and Early Devonian (Emsian) ‘porolepidid’-grade porolepiforms from the Eifel region of Germany. We present some revisions to external details of the braincase reported by a prior study, the most significant of which is identification of the occipital arch. Scans reveal substantial new data on internal structure of the braincase. The endocranial cavity of the ethmosphenoid division closely agrees with details reported for Glyptolepis and Powichthys, and we agree with past studies that argue for a close relationship between the latter genus and porolepiforms. Durialepis edentatus shows a dense network of canals in the snout comparable to the rostral tubuli of several other sarcoptergians. We also provide the first model of the posterior cranial endocast in a porolepiform. Drawing on additional tomographic data for Glyptolepis paucidens and an unnamed Scottish holoptychiid, we review patterns of character distribution in porolepiform braincases and endocasts, amplifying support for clades including Porolepiformes + Powichthys and for Holoptychiidae.
To analyse the feasibility and acceptability of a culinary nutritional intervention aimed at increasing plant-based foods consumption in the context of the Mediterranean diet in parent–child dyads.
Design:
The Nutritional and Culinary Habits to Empower Families (n-CHEF) is a 9-month feasibility study that included four culinary nutritional workshops (two face to face, two online) led by a chef and a dietitian-nutritionist. These workshops combined cooking with plant-based foods, with nutritional advice and experimental activities. The main outcomes were retention, quality of the intervention (monitoring workshops, acceptability and perceived impact) and changes in dietary and cooking habits.
Setting:
Parent–child dyads, Spain.
Participants:
Parent–child (aged 10–14 years) dyads.
Results:
Fifteen parent–child dyads were recruited, of which thirteen were retained during the 6-month follow-up. All but one parent–child dyads attended the four workshops. The overall assessment of the workshops was positive, although the online workshops were rated lower than the face to face. In general, parent–child dyads reported benefits in terms of nutrition and cooking aspects. Parents significantly increased their adherence to the Mediterranean diet, but non-significant changes were observed in children. However, children increased their consumption of vegetables and legumes and reduced snacks and ready meals. Parents also changed some of their culinary habits and increased their confidence in cooking at home.
Conclusions:
The n-CHEF showed that the culinary nutritional intervention had good levels of recruitment, retention and acceptability among parent–child dyads. In addition, dietary and culinary knowledge and habits can be improved, although further studies are needed to know the long-term effects in larger populations.
Paul Woodruff, who sadly passed away last year (28 August 1943–23 September 2023), left us an extraordinary and timely gift in his book Living Toward Virtue,1 a masterpiece on practical ethics that engages with and goes beyond the Socratic philosophy found in Plato's dialogues. The book is a tour de force of scholarship, intellectual humility, and philosophical acuity. It offers a neo-Socratic approach to virtue ethics – often contrasting it with neo-Aristotelian virtue ethics – based on the Socratic idea of taking care of our souls, which entails relentless self-examination that maintains us aware of our cognitive limitations and could help us avoid moral injury.
To comply with Shiʿi theological-jurisprudential justifications and dogmatic traditions, the Iranian postrevolutionary legal system formally enshrined the principle of legality of crime and punishment within the Iranian Constitution and important legal provisions. Despite this formal entrenchment and codification of its criminal law, which together act as a legal constraint on the traditionally excessive power of Muslim judges, the Iranian theocratic system has exempted religious sins from this principle by blurring the distinction between crime and sin and criminalizing certain sinful acts with unclear language. These two legal mechanisms not only violate the principle of legality and amplify legal uncertainty, but their reference to Sharia law also binds the fate of the accused more tightly to the discretion of the judge than to the letter of the law. Consequently, the religiopolitical predilections of judges have become a determining factor in findings of criminal responsibility and imposition of punishment on citizens.
I want to preface this response by noting that, while I think Bentley, O'Brien and I fundamentally differ in how we approach the archaeological record (2024), I am also convinced that the more perspectives on the past we can cultivate, the richer our interpretative garden will be. Moreover, the more narratives of past worlds we develop, the more nuanced and complex our image of the past will become and, hence, the messier and more human (Frieman in press). I therefore write in the hopes that we can disagree with care, so that all of our scholarship is enriched.
A distinctive kind of theoretical and analytical discourse on ritual sacrifice evolved within the Indian and Jewish traditions, in Mīmāṃsā and in Talmudic literatures, respectively, introducing special modes of analyzing ritual sacrifice, and elaborate methods of conceptualizing the relations between text and practice. Despite the significant role that comparative studies of Vedic/Brahmanical and biblical/Jewish sacrifice played in the development of the modern study of religion, a detailed comparative study of these emic “sciences of sacrifice” has not yet been carried out.
This study examines two pericopes addressing a similar dilemma—the treatment of ritual byproducts—from the Jaimini-Mīmāṃsā-Sūtra and from the Babylonian Talmud, each discussed within its commentarial tradition. The texts reveal a significant degree of convergence (major differences notwithstanding) in terms of dialectic discourse, terminology, thought-structures, hermeneutic assumptions, and more. Factors that may have contributed to this convergence are discussed, as are the broader implications of this comparative experiment.
The article addresses the important question of the calendar used in dating the Payagyi Pyu urns from Sri Ksetra (mod. Pyay) in Myanmar. It shows that, of the four calendars used in Myanmar at the time, two—the Ajjagona and Buddhist eras—can be ruled out. This leaves the Saka and Myanmar eras as the only possible options. However, although the Saka era was used for dating Indian records up to East Bengal, it was only used twice for dating an inscription in central Myanmar and, in addition, the early dates on the Payagyi urns seem to preclude its use in Myanmar that early on. The article concludes therefore that, for dating the Pyu urns, most likely the Pyu–Myanmar calendar of 638 CE was used.
Recognition of the parallels between Q material and the Epistle of James has developed in recent years, and has convincingly attested to James’ literary dependence upon Q. If James does constitute an independent witness to the Sayings Gospel, there indeed may be some merit to a limited deployment of the Jacobean epistle in studies of the Synoptic Problem. The present contribution considers the reconstruction of Q through comparison with several of its Jacobean parallels, surveying the extent to which James can be fruitfully deployed. While scholars should certainly exercise caution in using James to reconstruct Q, selective comparison may offer us some new insights, particularly in adjudicating discrepancies between Matthew and Luke. Although the Epistle’s utility is limited because of its lack of verbatim citation of Q, James may be particularly helpful in the contentious debate about the inclusion of the Lucan woes (Q/Luke 6.24–6) into Q and offers some force to the minority position that the woes constituted an original component of Q’s Beatitudes.
This paper presents an abductive argument for realism and truthmaker realism as follows. A metaphysical theory is better if it ontologically accounts for truths better than its rivals (the Abductive Principle). Truthmaker realism gives us a better ontological account for truths than its antirealist truthmaker rivals (Abductive Step). So, truthmaker realism is better than antirealist rivals. It presents the truthmaker project as an abductive project which asks us what accounts best ontologically for our truths. Antirealisms, especially idealisms, fail against their realist rivals on various abductive criteria.
Truthmaker realism is plagued by three main objections. Presenting an abductive argument for realism does two important things. First, it dissolves the standard objections. Second, it shows how truthmaker realism is overall better motivated than antirealist, pluralist, and neutralist rivals. Simple truthmaker principles added to a plausible abductive package of principles give us a straightforward argument for realism and against antirealism or any neutralist middle ground.
Björn Heile's 3 × 10 Musical Actions for Three Socially Distanced Performers features frequent changes in musical material, playing style and instrumental combinations. Throughout a series of short sections, the performers play, sing, speak, conduct and move around, following instructions that appear on tablets. This article reflects on audiences’ experiences of the work and on musical actions more generally. We consider musical actions as short, coherent motion chunks and distinguish between several types of action that appear in the piece: gestures (communicative actions, with or without sound), reactions (where a player responds to another) and interactions (where players mutually coordinate). The musicians’ individual and collective actions create a sense of play: on the one hand, they seem free and depart from standard concert conventions; on the other hand, they seem to be following a set of rules, even if these rules are not explained to the audience. As such, we approach the piece via theories of play and relate it to earlier modernist musical games. Ultimately, 3 × 10 Musical Actions emphasises several aspects of musical actions, as social, functional, expressive, playful and embodied.
The central question guiding this research is whether municipal councils governed by mayors with party membership differ significantly in their transparency from those governed by non-partisan mayors. Although this is an exploratory study that does not seek to test hypotheses, there are ongoing lively theoretical debates about the implications stemming from the decline of traditional parties and partisanship, and the rise of independent local lists (ILLs) (as well as the rise of new challenger parties). Dealing with unbalanced panel data from 308 Portuguese municipal councils from 2013 to 2017, we use a Bayesian hierarchical model based on a Beta regression. Our findings suggest that there are no differences in local transparency levels—as measured by the Municipal Transparency Index—in municipal councils governed by mayors with party membership and those by non-partisan mayors. Given that transparency is a common concern for both party- and non-party–aligned local governments as well as voters, this preliminary analysis asks important substantive questions about the promises that many ILLs make about their ability to clean up party politics and return power to “the people.”
Existing literature on climate politics predominantly concentrates on democracies. However, there is a pressing need to examine how authoritarian regimes respond to climate change, given their growing impact on global carbon emissions and their populations’ acute climate vulnerability. Extant research often assumes that authoritarian regimes have inherent advantages in addressing climate change, leading to overly optimistic perspectives on their capabilities. This study highlights the necessity of qualifying those assumptions and evaluates the comparative advantages and disadvantages of autocracies relative to democracies throughout the policy process: policy formulation (or outputs), implementation, and outcomes. I argue that whereas climate-conscious autocracies may efficiently produce policy outputs based on scientific evidence, they often face more challenges related to information about local enforcement during implementation. This may result in greater hurdles than democracies, even with adequate state capacity and monitoring infrastructure. Furthermore, this analysis contends that a country’s developmental stage, rather than its regime type, is related more directly to the effectiveness of translating implementation efforts into tangible policy outcomes. Therefore, this article posits that the political science discourse, which often juxtaposes democracies with autocracies, should expand its scope to better understand how a country’s developmental level influences the success of its climate strategies.
There are no contemporary data on the burden of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) in New Zealand.
Objectives:
To estimate the economic burden of HAIs in adults in New Zealand public hospitals by number and monetary value of bed days lost; number of deaths, number of life years lost, and the monetary value (in NZ dollars); Accident Compensation Commission (ACC) HAI treatment injury payments; and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs).
Methods:
The annual incidence rate was calculated from the observed prevalence of HAIs in New Zealand, and length of patient stays. Total HAIs for 2021 were estimated by multiplying adult admissions by incidence rates. The excess length of stay and mortality risk attributed to those with HAI was calculated using a multistate model. Payments for treatment injuries were obtained from the ACC. DALYs for HAIs were estimated from the literature.
Results:
The incidence rate of HAI was 4.74%, predicting 24,191 HAIs for 2021, resulting in 76,861 lost bed days, 699 deaths, with 9,371 years of life lost (YoLL). The annual economic burden was estimated to be $955m comprised of $121m for lost bed days, $792m for cost of YoLL, and $43m ACC claims. There were 24,165 DALY which is greater than many other measured injuries in New Zealand, eg motor vehicle traffic crashes with 20,328 DALY.
Conclusions:
HAIs are a significant burden for patients, their families, and the public health system. Preventive guidelines for many HAIs exist and a strategic plan is needed to reduce HAIs in New Zealand.
Some musics and musical situations seem to invite the audience to participate; others insist that the audience should absorb the events of performance in rapt attention. A slippage between such distinctions can also arise: a moment where an audience might be uncertain as to whether joining in is desired or welcome. In an examination of such a moment of uncertainty or surprise, at the close of Raymond MacDonald's Stolen in a Dreamland Heist (2021), we suggest that such events point towards and perform the particular creative spaces and spacing effects that arise in musical events in ways which draw attention to the affective bodily relationships between performers and auditors. The article takes the form of its own nested dialogue: an interview with the composer forms its central portion, framed within theoretical examination both of that critical moment within performance and the reflections on it the interview reveals.
Complaints regarding the sensitivity of rice to florpyrauxifen-benzyl and off-target movement of the herbicide occurred following its commercial launch in 2018 in the midsouthern United States. These two concerns encouraged the exploration of an alternative application method for florpyrauxifen-benzyl in rice. A field study was conducted in 2020 and 2021 to determine if coating florpyrauxifen-benzyl on urea would reduce negative impacts of the herbicide to rice. Five commercial rice lines were evaluated: ‘Diamond’, ‘Titan’, ‘RT7321 FP’, ‘RT7521 FP’, and ‘XP753’. Florpyrauxifen-benzyl coated on urea at a 2× rate (60 g ai ha–1) reduced rice injury in one of five commercial rice lines in 2020 and four of five commercial rice lines in 2021, compared to spray applications at the same rate. In 2020, ‘RT7521 FP’ exhibited a 17-percentage point injury reduction when coating florpyrauxifen-benzyl on urea at a 2× rate vs. the same rate sprayed. In 2021, rice injury was reduced by 26, 10, and 27 percentage points in the commercial rice lines ‘Diamond’, ‘Titan’, and ‘XP753’, respectively, following coated urea vs. spray applications at 4 wk after treatment (WAT). ‘XP753’ exhibited reduced injury (15 percentage points) by coating florpyrauxifen-benzyl at a 1× rate (30 g ai ha–1) 4 WAT in 2021, and another, ‘Diamond’, had comparable groundcover to nontreated plots when florpyrauxifen-benzyl was coated on urea at a 1× rate rather than the reductions observed from the spray application at a 2× rate. Yield differences were a function of urea rate rather than application method, where in six out of ten instances greater rough rice grain yield occurred at the higher rate. Findings from this experiment indicate that coating florpyrauxifen-benzyl on urea can reduce the amount of injury observed, especially in areas of overlap where you would have a 2× rate.
This paper publishes for the first time two apparently unprovenanced Westland cauldrons in the collections of the Society of Antiquaries of London. An argument is made that these vessels are two of the three cauldrons from the lost Halkyn Mountain hoard found c 1760.
Global digital integration is desirable and perhaps even inevitable for most States. However, there is currently no systematic framework or narrative to drive such integration in trade agreements. This article evaluates whether community values can offer a normative foundation for rules governing digital trade. It uses the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Digital Trade Protocol as a case study and argues that identifying and solidifying the collective needs of the African region through this instrument will be key to shaping an inclusive and holistic regional framework. These arguments are substantiated by analysis of the regulation of cross-border data flows, privacy and cybersecurity.
Cultural inheritance is a central issue in archaeology. If variation were not inherited, cultures could not evolve. Some archaeologists have dismissed cultural evolutionary theory in general, and the significance of inheritance specifically, substituting instead a view of culture change that results from agency and intentionality amid a range of options in terms of social identity, cultural values and behaviours. This emphasis projects the modern academic imagination onto the past. Much of the archaeological record, however, is consistent with an intergenerational inheritance process in which cultural traditions were the defining characteristics of behaviour.
